ABOUT TEACH STUDENTSMONEY EXPOThe Teach Students Money Expo program is a hands-on learning experiencedesigned to teach students about real-world financial life skills. Through asimulated city called EightVille, students will learn about managing money,making wise financial decisions, and living responsibly in Central Florida.One of the program's main focuses is behavioral economics, as students decideabout their living standards and prioritize their needs versus wants. This willrequire them to think carefully about their spending choices and how they allocatetheir resources. The program also includes a range of businesses and volunteersoperating 20 storefronts, representing typical monthly expenses like housing,utilities, groceries, insurance, childcare, and transportation. By visiting thesestorefronts and making purchases, students will learn about the various costsassociated with daily living and how to budget effectively.Throughout the simulation, students must keep track of their finances and attemptto complete the activity with a positive balance. This will help them understandthe importance of managing their money effectively and their decisions' impact ontheir financial well-being. For two years in a row, students whoopted for the trade/vocational careerpath outperformed all other tracks by18%, with an average income of$79,000 for students in this category.Career Track:Bachelors 87%The field that attracted the highestdemand was the pursuit of abachelor's degree, however, it raisedthe most inquiries. 87% of studentsenjoyed their jobs but surprised withthe income they received.41%Career Track:High Schoolof students expressed contentmentwith their income, while the restrequested for increased educationalopportunities and higher-payingemployment.Career Track:Vocational/Trade99%of students loved their jobs, pay,discretionary spending, and theirquality of life. More than half areinterested in exploring vocationaltraining as a career choice. Career Track:Entreprenuership72%of entrepreneurs were shockedlearning they did not immediatelyreceive an income and asked forpart-time jobs citing their incomewas not sufficent to coveraffordable housing.S T U D E N T S ' R E A C T I O NThe scenarios in the simulation were determined by the student's educational aspirations, whichin turn impacted their career choices, monthly income, and quality of life. Upon completion of thesimulation, we conducted an exit survey to assess each student's satisfaction with their careerchoices and whether they would make the same decisions if they were adults today. TOP EXPO ENTREPRENEURS The Orlando MBDA Business Center and its latest partner 3D Strategic Management Inc guided students who aspired to be entrepreneurs The students built and managed their own businesses by pitching their ideas to investors selling their products and services and using their net earnings to make a living in EightVille The winners got recognition from all the attendees and an opportunity to continue growing their businesses and realize their entrepreneurial dreams The Orlando MBDA Business Center selected the top five students with the best business ideas that were innovative creative and feasible among those who chose entrepreneurship as their career option The students discovered that entrepreneurship is a challenging way to make money and requires resilience to thrive as self employed The entrepreneurship winner also received a Finance Fellowship with the U S Department of Commerce and a 600 summer stipend PARENTING PAYS Sponsored by Chase Bank Congratulations to our 2023 parent winner Ann Taylor for having her utility bill paid While students were exploring EightVille we had a delightful parents lounge for all adults to enjoy In addition we offered various financial workshops conducted by experts covering topics ranging from investing to raising money savvy kids Along with some excellent snacks attending each session allowed parents to win our grand prize which covers any household bill up to 280 8 CENTS IN A JAR 2023 TEACH STUDENTS MONEY EXPO POST EVENT REPORT
