P urim with a Personal P urpose Meet Yaakov Mordechai Class of 22 A talmid s perspective on a his meaningful experience with Rabbi Elimelech Adler Director of Development that I saw was their ahavas hatorah and that they were able to give that love over to us the talmidim I was always impressed seeing my rebbi Rabbi Koval sit and learn with his chavrusa in the school beis medrash for two hours after he finished teaching for the day and was probably exhausted EA What would you say was you most memorable EA Good afternoon Tell us a little about yourself YMS I live with my family in Passaic and attended the Clifton Cheder from pre school through eighth grade I graduated this past June EA Wow so you ve been with the cheder a long long time What is the earliest memory you have of going to the cheder YMS This is sort of random but I have a vague memory of an emphasis on tzitzis EA Interesting Given your experience what would you say is a defining characteristic of the talmidim of the Cheder YMS It s definitely the eidelkeit There s a sensitivity about who we are what we represent and how we treat others that really defines a Cheder talmid I m definitely proud of being a Cheder talmid EA I like that That certainly comes in no small part from the Rabbeim and teachers Can you tell me a bit about how you were influenced by your rabbeim YMS The rabbeim each have their own style but one thing experience this past year YMS The Hachnasas Sefer Torah was beautiful Everyone came together to celebrate the bringing of a new Torah to our school in memory of our friend and fellow schoolmate Binyomin Gonsher who was nifter the previous year It s always geshmack to sing and dance at a Hachnasas Sefer Torah but this one was very personal and meaningful for all of us EA Yes it was quite beautiful Is there anything else you would like to let us know about the school YMS I really appreciated that every student can have a shaichus to the Menahel Rabbi Seldowitz He knows everyone s name and when he greets you it feel like he s happy and excited to see you It makes you feel like a million dollars EA Yaakov Mordechai thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me Im yirtzeh Hashem you should have incredible hatzlacha in mesivta this upcoming year YMS Thank you On a night that you would have least expected it these boys did something incredibly special in memory of their friend Purim time generally tops the list when it comes to fun at school With singing dancing carnivals and costumes the energy is felt for weeks But this past Purim a different kind of ruach permeated the yeshiva s building on Purim night one of learning and kedusha in advance and then on Purim night after megillah instead of attending a traditional Purim mesiba they sat together and learned for two and a half hours They raised nearly six thousand dollars The boys felt exhilarated and fulfilled from their accomplishments said Rabbi Koval this spirit of chesed is what is produced at the Cheder But that wasn t the end for this class They went on to finish the mitzvah Rabbi Koval explained how the boys The boys felt exhilarated themselves ordered the books to fill Binyamin s library and fulfilled from their having raised enough funds to purchase almost every book accomplishments said published by Artscroll When Rabbi Koval this spirit of the cases of books arrived they unloaded them scanned and chesed is what is produced cataloged them and put them in Rabbi Koval the eighth grade the proper places on the shelves at the Cheder Rebbi described the sentiment These bochurim were truly able Purim is a time of special focus to see the outcome of their hard on bein adom l chaveyro and work and dedication to a cause that was so meaningful to we strengthen it through the mitzvos of the day matanos them it will truly impact them for the rest of their lives l evyonim and mishloach manos but this class decided It s your generosity that provides the structure that produces to take it further and spend their time on Purim night boys like the Class of 2022 Young men that already recognize in a fulfilling way and at the same time do something what it means to support others and to give of themselves meaningful for their friend Binyamin a h before they have even begun high school We The class decided to make a learning seder on Purim night appreciate the tremendous impact that you and to solicit sponsors for their learning to go towards the had on our students The nachas is yours Binyamin Gonsher Memorial Fund They made calls for days In 2021 Binyamin Gonsher who would have been a graduating eighth grader that year sadly passed away His parents donated a library at the Cheder in his memory but last Purim the current eighth grade decided that they wanted to do something special in Binyamin s memory as well Thank You Divine Design 732 367 7198 to all the people that took the initiative to participate as a fundraising team in the Cheder Bais Sports mentch ship Students learn that it s really not about winning or losing it s how you played the game with others Everyone wants to be a winner We all want to contribute to the team and perhaps be the MVP even just for a school volleyball game But boys and sports can be a tough combination Disappointment in a loss or a teammate can at times lead to bullying name calling or exclusion from future participation which can make kids dread going to gym class or recess Sports are supposed to be fun and growth oriented so at the Clifton Cheder there s no place for bullying on the field and no classmate is left behind Under the leadership of English Studies principal Mrs Rina Gilden Rabbi Simi Hollander coaches the gym class in a way that the students not only learn how to play the games and improve their skills but also how to play like a mentch The class is structured so that the seventh and eighth graders help the first through fourth graders They assist Rabbi Hollander with coaching their teams and strategizing with their younger teammates hitting the ball back over the net without catching it first The boys took ownership of the situation and adjusted the rules of the game so that the younger kids could work on their skills and not feel bad about not being able to make the volley Eli was a seventh grader last year and was playing the pitcher position in a game of softball when his opponent hit a ground ball right towards him Eli could have easily made the play for his team but instead he stayed in his position and let a fourth grader run in scoop up the ball and joyously make the play himself It s amazing to see how the older boys are able to let go of their desire to make the play in order to help the younger students succeed and learn how to do it Rabbi Hollander elaborates It s amazing to see how the older boys are able to let go of their desire to make the play in order to help the younger students succeed and learn how to do it When the boys played volleyball they noticed that the younger kids had a hard time Everyone here knows it s alright if you don t make the shot says Rabbi Hollander while we teach rules and techniques we also teach how to win and lose like a mentch and the perspective that It s only a game We respect the referee and our friends At the end of each class the teams line up like in the pro leagues and shake each others hands before they go back to their classrooms Thanks to you the boys at the Clifton Cheder have learned that there is no time out from being a mentch Your generosity and support go a long way to helping the talmidim develop as kind and caring ba alei midos Clifton Cheder 1333 Broad Street Clifton NJ 07013 I Bais Yaakov of Clifton 123 Industrial East Clifton NJ 07012 www cliftoncheder org
