June 2023 WE ARE MOVING TO ONE TRADITIONAL SERVICE ALL WORSHIP SERVICES TO START AT 10 45AM BEGINNING JUNE 4TH Beginning June 4th we will make the transition from two traditional worship services to ONE traditional worship service at 10 45AM Our IGNITE Contemporary worship service will move to 10 45AM also As our church has talked more and more about connection within our congregation there was a small group of early service worshippers who approached me with the realization that there were many people in the later service that they didn t know or had not connected with in years They told me that they would be willing to give up their 8 30 service in order to worship together with the folks at the later service I agreed that connection was important to the health of our congregation and that combining the services could go a long way toward fostering that connection I asked them to visit with the other early church people to get a feel for what the others thought They came back to me with overwhelming support for combining the services So the issue was brought up at our most recent Church Council meeting where it again received strong support along with some recommendations for service times and ideas for connecting the traditional and contemporary services in fellowship This change will begin on June 4th when we will also celebrate confirmation We have several youth that have gone through confirmation and a few that will be baptized as well Following worship we will have a good old fashioned pot luck to honor these young people So plan on coming to worship at 10 45am and bring one of your favorite dishes to share Blessings Pastor Wade
Cindy y Yo Vamos a Merida MX The United Methodist Book of Discipline and the RioTexas Annual Conference encourage pastors to take periodic sabbaticals Clergy are required to take one month every four years and one week every year These are meant for spiritual renewal I must admit that I have not been very good at taking sabbaticals In fact I ve never truly taken a sabbatical I ve taken a couple of mini vacations here and there usually to watch Ethan play football but I haven t really been intentional about sabbatical time I had planned to take a sabbatical in the summer of 2019 Well that s the summer that I was appointed to FUMC I decided that the first few weeks of my new appointment would not be a good time to go on a sabbatical so I thought I would put it off until 2020 Then COVID came to the Crossroads in 2020 which made it a bad time to take a sabbatical and 2021 wasn t any better as we tried to work through getting back to normal Then 2022 came along with the challenges of a split within the United Methodist Church So that brings us to 2023 It is time I believe I owe it to the church and to my spiritual health to fulfill my responsibility for spiritual renewal by finally taking a sabbatical Cindy and I will be going to Merida Mexico on June 14th and staying through July 12th Merida is the capital of the state of Yucatan and considered to be the safest city in North America second to Quebec Canada Our plan is to spend the month embracing the unique culture In addition to having a reputation for being safe Merida is also said to be very friendly I hope that during our four week stay we will have the opportunity to meet and get to know some of the locals and possibly even get involved in the only Methodist church in the city We ll explore the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza swim in the cool waters of a cenote and eat and eat and eat But we won t drink the water The food in Merida and Yucatan is very unique The food is heavily influenced by the Mayans Lots of turkey I love turkey I m also looking forward to trying a marquesita that s marquesita not margarita A marquesita is a rolled crispy crepe with different sweet fillings and a sprinkle of shredded cheese I m not sure about adding the cheese but it sounds really interesting Also the Yucatan is the birthplace of chocolate I may have to buy bigger pants while I m there Like I said I also expect to be intentional about spiritual renewal The weather is going to be hot and humid so much of our sight seeing and exploration will be done in the morning and evening hours During the heat of the day we ll be back at our casita where I hope to do a good bit of Bible study and writing as well as take time for prayer and devotion Thank you to our SPRC committee who offered their blessing when I approached them with this sabbatical back in March And a big thank you to those that will be filling the pulpit in worship while I am out And of course muchas gracias to Pastor Amanda who will shoulder the pastoral duties of ministry during those weeks I expect to return in July refreshed and renewed for another season of thriving ministry at First United Methodist Church Please keep us in your prayers as we will be keeping you in ours Blessings Pastor Wade
