So today well or people in the past we sat with those who were our grandmothers and then they would tell us different stories So therefore now I will tell one of them So and then long ago the people were camped it is said So it was as nice a night as could be with moonlight and pleasant and so two young women were lying outside they say 20 High School Le v e l 4

And so one of them said this they say Look It may be that some enemies are hunting and therefore they are running away but there is nothing to do about it they said they say And then something made a noise from somewhere they say And then one said Oh oh it s bad It must be a crazy buffalo coming that s why these antelope and deer ran away he said Wi h pi Hi p ya Re a de r X YZ 21

Well whatever it is was always making noise they say It shouted like a man they say So and then this black thing was coming from the top of the hill they say And here it was a Crazy Buffalo Bull they say It did that and again it came they say but there was no place at all on the big plain to run to but they ran across the plains they say So this buffalo bull saw them and kept coming they say 22 High School Le v e l 4

So all at once once of them said this You see cousin I will marry the brightest star she said And then the other one said this No me I will marry the one that is shining softly she said Well they were talking as they lay And then they went to sleep and they woke up Wi h pi Hi p ya Re a de r X YZ 23

And then in the morning they were up above they say And then up there that really bright star was a young man they say and the other one shining softly was an old man they say And so the man really cried out So and then when they arrived above they married them So and then it was summer and then they were going to dig turnips and then the young man said this When they are digging turnips don t dig any make Cheyenne trunips he said 24 High School Le v e l 4

So and then they were walking around digging turnips And then the other one said I wonder why he said that And so Well I will dig this one she thought and she was going to dig a male Cheyenne turnip so she pounded on her iron digging stick And then she broke through and fell from the sky and she fell back down they say And then the woman fell back down And then from there a baby boy was lying trying to crawl Wi h pi Hi p ya Re a de r X YZ 25

Now he was walking they say and then an animal kept him and he grew up they say So and now he was tall and so now he went to a camp they say So he went and there was a little tipi at the end so he went there they say So and then a little boy lived there with his grandmother they say And then the old woman said this Grandson where did you come from she asked 26 High School Le v e l 4

So he said this I came here to live with my friend he said And so Grandson What is your name she asked And then he said this Wel I am called Falling Star he said Grandson you have a really good name she said So well no matter what Grandchild you can stay here so you will live here with this friend of yours Wi h pi Hi p ya Re a de r X YZ 27

And then his friend said this Grandmother well will you cook something he said My friend is really hungry so we will eat together he said And then the old woman said this No Grandson I have nothing good to eat she said Well Grandson over there today a woman scraped a hide to I will go there and ask for some hide scrapings and bring them back and cook them up for And so she went there and she asked for some hide scrapings and she brought them back and she cooked them and she ate them with the boys they say 28 High School Le v e l 4

So and the next day the crier came around the camp circle He said this Everyone listen I want to announce something So and then he said it So and then This tipi they put up in the center that is a Woman Living In The Center he said And then she was the chief s daughter they said Whoever catches the red fish will have Woman Living In The Center for his wife he said Wi h pi Hi p ya Re a de r X YZ 29

And so a red fish would come downstream in the water in the creek They had fishing gear and they sat down So therefore many men had fishing poles and sat down there So and then he himself said this Grandmother give us something We will do fishing Well Grandson I don t have antyhing But well I will make fishing lines for you And so well she finished them she gave them to them and they sat down along the water 30 High School Le v e l 4

And then a man said this Now it comes he said The people sat all along the bank but the fish came anyway they say Now the red fish swallowed the bait of the boy sitting there And so the people all said this Falling Star caught the fish and they went home carrying him on their shoulders Wi h pi Hi p ya Re a de r X YZ 31

So and they took him to the tipi in the center and they carried him inside And then they were rejoicing inside they say and people came from all around they say and they saw him So without any discussion he kept his grandmother and his friend and they lived well they say So and then as we people are now living anyone who grows up pitifully but has knowledge will live well Well that s the way it was 32 High School Le v e l 4
