personal story

Growing up in a family were we traveled every summer holiday I had seen quit a lot of places around the world from the US to Asia and all around Europe So when I had to do my internship I desired to do it abroad in a city that would be completely different then what I ve seen before It had to be Tokyo Japan

I had 2 months to get myself an internship and started to sent at least 20 different emails to creative agencies but after 1 week non of them had replied I looked for agencies where international designers worked so at least I knew they could speak english and sent another 15 emails Still no reply I got in touch with a Japans guy who studied in Amsterdam at that time He phoned my top 5 agencies I wanted to go But they all rejected me because I couldnt speak Japanese I only had 1 month left and it seemed impossible to do my internship in Tokyo But my mind was already there and I just wanted to go away

So I just booked a flight and booked an airbnb In that 1 month I created 10 little creditcard size booklets as portfolio made a map of Tokyo with the agencies I wanted to go to And so I left Arrived in Tokyo I immediately went to the 1st agency on my list I knocked on there door and 2 Japanese man were staring at me like I was the weirdest creature they had ever seen Unfortunately they couldn t speak english so I went on to the next agency I couldn t find the address After hours I finally arrived at the right address but there was nothing other than a parking lot Next day next agency It turned out that the CEO was from Amsterdam as well This was just meant to be We had a great conversation and he liked my portfolio

He wasn t the one in charge of job placements so he sent all my details to his creative partner I was so happy I was sure I got my self an internship this time So the next day I start exploring the city and celebrating it But the creative director never got back to me so after a couple of days I started to give up on the fact that it was possible to get a internship in Tokyo without speaking the languages and my qualifications I just told my self to see this time in Tokyo as a holiday break and the fact that I was experiencing the city was enough But after 2 days I wanted to try it 1 more time So there I went with another little portfolio booklet in to another agency building On the 3th floor I arrived in a small long hall way I started to walk to the left and suddenly the wall ended There was a japanese woman sitting behind a desk She looked surprised and I started to say quit confined Im sorry I might be a bit weird but I was wondering if I could do an internship here Then A white man d head suddenly appeared from behind a small wall It was an english man he took me to a meeting room and we had a good conversation Unfortunately they already had an intern and there was no room for another one It was okay at least I tried another time

But then he ended the conversation saying that the current intern will leave in 1 week and I was more then welcome to replace him I made it after so many tries I got my self a internship on the other side of the world in a city I didn t know any one didn t speak the languages and had no Idea about the the culture

Every time I doubt about my self I think back about this moment If I really want it I can Just go for it and don t give up

Cheerful happy person Nice style dress nice Esmee is interesting I only see her wearing black or white I really enjoy her design style Sometimes I give her rides home with her scooter It s cute You have great style but mine is better Hope you dont havate me Esmee is the most amazing chinese girl ever I love to bother you you are always sick thats what I love about you and all the advice you give me Kiss on the butt La Concha Esmee Well you are so nice very good style your art is amazing and you re someone to look up to

And her portfolio looked really good She already worked in agencies in Sao Paulo and Tokyo and her designs looked amazing We were definitely interested in having a meeting with her Looking back at the time you worked with us our communication team was like a holy grail Our team worked really well together We ve done some really cool projects and made some really cool brands and designs So we invited Esmee and the week after she rang our doorbell Apart from your continuous syncing battle with Dropbox Sven knows you couldn t have performed better Poor Tebbo had no chance against the visual design power Esmee brought with her during the meet up We were so happy that we decided to invite her for an interview And after you became our Visual Designer you didn t let us down In the beginning I thought lets start of easy But I don t know if its a difference in generation but you are so fast in designing And usually fastness effects quality but this wasn t the case You really created some high standard work Alright enough I ll finish this up Esmee it will be a big loss not having you on the team anymore But I will have a little hope that when you come back from your adventure you ll join our team again Eitherway I know for sure that you ll end up at an A rank Agency or company wdesigning the most awesome stuff ever Enjoy the next months and keep up that spirit of yours
