1 Shakespeare said to thine own self be true What does that mean and how are we true to ourselves Our descriptions tend to be pretty superficial The following questions are designed to help you dig The more you ponder about them the more insight you will gain and the faster you will be prepared to make the changes you want to make Do you enjoy quiet time by yourself Why Do you have moments of introspection What do you learn How do you feel when you do this or when you try if you have not done it before You can only be true to someone you know Do you know who you are Describe who you are how would you describe yourself to someone you had just met 1 Are you your own best friend How does this feel 2
We don t expect perfection from those that we love We see their humanity and love that unique mix of strengths weaknesses characteristics and idiosyncrasies that create this remarkable person Learn to look at yourself not through rose colored glasses but with the same compassion for your humanity you feel for those you love You must know who and where you are before you can decide where you want to go and who you want to be Finally getting to know yourself involves investing the time and energy in yourself that you would invest in another person who you really wanted to get to know You have to be willing to see the good the bad and the ugly You have to be willing to love and accept yourself today for who you are and where you are today That doesn t mean you are giving yourself permission to stay there only to start there 3 4
2 We live in a world where society defines success as wealth power position lots of toys etc Perhaps you grew up in a world where mom and dad defined success as being a doctor a lawyer or taking over the family business Regardless of past or present influences or the expectations of others you will never be happy living someone else s definition of success Self mastery begins when you shut out the voices trying to define success for you and listen to your heart 5 What is it that brings you joy satisfaction and fulfillment What is it that when missing causes the world to become a gray and boring place Once you know the things that are really important to you more important than anyone else s opinion you are in a position to create your own unique definition of success You are ready to listen to and march to your own drummer You know what truly matters to you The pathway to happiness and freedom lies directly ahead This is self mastery 6
3 Surface Reasons Why can be a really tough question Why are these things important Why do they matter The natural reaction is to say just because they do Sorry that doesn t cut it This is about digging deep into your gut dredging up whatever you find and looking for hard answers That is what a good parent does You don t want him to be one of the kids without a parent there It gets you away from work Heartfelt Reasons You are building shared memories For example in defining successful components of your family relationships you may feel it is important for you to be at your son s soccer games Let s take a look at the reasons for this decision 7 You want your son to know that he is a huge priority in your life By helping out with whatever needs doing you are teaching him about service 8
Heartfelt Reasons Choose an example that resonates with you After looking at my examples of surface and heartfelt reasons find surface and heartfelt reasons that are valid for you and your example You are building shared memories You want your son to know he is a huge priority in your life By helping out with whatever needs doing you are teaching him about service Your Example Surface Reasons Heartfelt Reasons 9 Surface reasons are not bad reasons They simply do not have the emotional anchors that heartfelt reasons have When you are stressed tired or simply have too much to do surface reasons can be shrugged off Heartfelt reasons are a stop sign You stop and think what happened to my priorities Am I listening to my inner drummer or to the cacophony of noises in the world It has been said that if you don t know where you are going it doesn t matter which road you take Understanding why specific things matter to you keeps you focused on the road you have chosen the road that lead to the destination you have chosen 10
4 Are you willing to pay the price When shopping you are accustomed to evaluating merchandise to decide if it fits your needs and if it is worth the price These are personal judgments Just because something is worth it to someone else does not make it worth it to everyone Based on how it fits your needs and how it fits your budget you make a buying or a non buying decision Everything has a price Sometimes but not always the price is in dollars Other times the price we pay is time or energy Often the price is complex and involves multiple forms of payment In the above example of a parent wanting to attend a son s soccer game let s look at a variety of potential costs After we evaluate each of the costs associated with my example evaluate the costs associated with your example 11 Money Time spent away from work may result in fewer paid hours or loss of commission or billable hours To get from work to the playing fields and then home may result in additional driving time and added gas and wear and tear on your vehicle Concession stand purchases can add up quickly Your monetary costs What are your monetary trade offs in your example 12
Energy You may need to go into work early so you can leave early to get to the game on time Time Time spent at a soccer game may take away from free time you could have spent at the gym or reading a book you want to read It will take time away from grocery shopping mowing the lawn or other household chores that need to get done You could spend time catching up with friends or taking classes to further your education What are your time trade offs in your example 13 It may be a tiring way to spend an evening when you could be home relaxing after a long day Perhaps trying to work with a bunch of excited boys who are more interested in having fun than listening to you saps your energy What is the price you will pay in your energy in your example Paying the price is acknowledging that your resources of money time and energy are limited The decision you have to make is whether or not the price is worth it to you personally The thought process might go something like this 14
Money The few dollars I lose by attending the soccer game is no more than I am currently spending at Starbucks and building a relationship with my son is far more important to me than a Starbucks treat Time The great book I want to read will still be there when soccer season is over This is my chance to teach by example that people are more important than things Energy I m really tired when I get to the field at the end of the day but when I see my son s eyes light up when he sees me it fills me with joy and positive energy He is secure knowing that he is a priority in my life In each instance the price has been anchored to a heartfelt why Perspective is a powerful motivation in the process of choice Using your example what are the prices you will pay and how will you anchor them to a heartfelt why 15 Money Time Energy Are you beginning to see and understand how what matters to you and mindfully making decisions that reflect your priorities will improve the quality of your life 16
5 What You Spend Your Time Doing When you see with your eyes it is like a photograph has been taken This photograph is then transmitted along the optic nerve to the brain Your brain sees that photograph and your mind sees what your eyes have transmitted If you are blind you could give your brain tons of details to create a picture of something you could not see The mind could not recognize the difference between something really seen and something created from your description Most of us are blessed with physical sight but are blind in so many other ways Let your mind envision everything you ever wanted in life including Relationship Your Dream Car 17 Picture and record every aspect of your life Invest the time and focus your brain to see this as real This is vision It is who you were meant to be It is what you were meant to have It is what you can have You have mastered your vision and you are on the road to self mastery Vision is not enough It will require work to convert vision into reality Unfortunately there are no fairy godmothers to make it happen To achieve it we must do the work Your Dream Home Professional Recognition Financial Security 18
6 You can t change yesterday If you live for tomorrow you lose today The only thing you truly have is this moment This snapshot in time Life is a continuous string of moments Moments lost Or moments maximized The choice is yours Moments are mastered when they bring you closer to your vision Moments lost take you farther away Stagnation is not an option You are either moving closer to or further away from where you want to be With each choice in each moment of each day you are moving Which direction are you going in 21 22
7 You will never completely master yourself It is a process The more mastered moments you string together the smaller the breaks between your mastered moments the closer you come to mastering yourself and living your vision As that vision becomes real continuously stretch the horizon to create a new vision where more mastered moments can lead to the fulfillment of that new vision then another and another Mastering yourself is about choosing to do those things that take you where you want to go even when they are not easy You may not be in the mood but instead of kicking back and saying whenever take action now Only you can make it happen Why would you procrastinate the day of your fulfillment 23 Parents Kids Do I Love Him Money Car Repairs Work I m Hungry My Hair I m Fat Anger 24
