The Our Lady of the Poor Clinic - Bernard Mevs Hospital 2023 project seeks to provide financial support to a Haitian clinic that treats impoverished patients every day. Since the devastation of the 2010 earthquake, Haiti's unstable socioeconomic situation has made accessing healthcare incredibly challenging. However, this clinic continues to provide medical care for patients from all walks of life to ensure they have the chance at a healthier future.

Haiti

Close to 60% of the 11.3 million people in Haiti live below the poverty line, making Haiti the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Most Haitians struggle to find enough food to eat, clean water to drink and a safe place to live. Access to education and healthcare is also extremely limited.

Haiti is a bleak place for children. One-fifth of all Haitian children suffer from malnutrition, and 67 of every 1,000 children die before reaching their fifth birthday.

High levels of food insecurity result from many factors, including high food prices, reduced remittances and income losses resulting from the COVID‑19 pandemic and social unrest. All of these factors exacerbate the already poor food security situation.

With so many families focused merely on survival, many Haitian children never get the chance to receive even a primary education. Haiti’s literacy rate is 61.7%.

FFTP began working to help the poor of Haiti in 1986. Today, the organization is one of the country’s largest emergency relief and sustainable development project providers.

Port-au-Prince

Port-au-Prince is the capital and most populated city in Haiti. The city's population was estimated at 987,310 in 2015, and the metropolitan area has an estimated population of 2,618,894.

Two operating hospitals were still present after the earthquake of 2010 to provide inpatient and outpatient care for those affected by the January 2010 earthquake. The University of Miami and Project Medishare established the Bernard Mevs Hospital. This hospital offers level-one trauma care to Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas and is staffed entirely by volunteers.

Provide Life-Saving Healing to Families

In Haiti, access to healthcare, especially for the poor, is scarce and often unattainable. However, there is an opportunity to make a significant impact and support a clinic that strives to provide a place of healing through God's grace. Our Lady of the Poor Clinic, located at the Bernard Mevs Hospital, is dedicated to delivering quality healthcare services to all in need.

One of the essential departments within the clinic is the HIV/AIDS Pediatric Care Center, which caters specifically to the impoverished. This center ensures that even the most vulnerable members of society have access to top-notch outpatient services, emergency treatment and diagnostic facilities. Equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory, the clinic offers comprehensive services, including surgical procedures, pharmaceutical products and long-term management of chronic diseases.

Our Lady of the Poor Clinic also provides resources and services supporting prevention and wellness care for women and children. They tackle significant epidemics and illnesses such as dehydration caused by diarrhea, malnutrition and tuberculosis.

The clinic aims to empower patients and the general public by implementing healthy lifestyle programs and educational awareness initiatives. Their main objective is to reduce the high infant mortality rates and address adult illnesses that can be treated and prevented by prioritizing the well-being of women and children.

However, this vital healthcare facility's daily operations and sustainability depend on your generous support. Contributing to this project can help cover a portion of the clinic's operating expenses and supplies. Your contribution will directly impact the lives of countless individuals who desperately need access to quality healthcare.

Join us in supporting Our Lady of the Poor Clinic as they strive to make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged in Haiti. Together, we can ensure that the poor have a place where they can receive God's healing and experience the transformative power of compassionate care.

Testimonial

Péguy Barthelemy is one of the patients recently cared for by the Lady of the Poor Clinic. For his privacy, we do not have photos of his face but the ailment he suffered from. "I had a bulky posterior and lateral congenital mixed sub-angular mandibular mass with predominantly cystic," explained Péguy. His parents brought him to multiple hospitals around Haiti, each turning them away.

"My parents heard about Bernard Mevs Hospital, and they made the decision to return to Port-au-Prince with me for a consultation." Through the grace of God, the clinic took on his case and worked diligently to remove the growth.

"From there, I have been taken care of, and I underwent ... a major surgery at Bernard Mevs Hospital on April 26, 2023, at no cost for excision and biopsy of the cervical mass."

He is forever grateful for the clinic's support: "I am extremely happy and grateful. I can't thank you enough for this." We invite you to join us in caring for more patients like Péguy so they can receive medical support and live life to the full.

Péguy was turned down at every hospital, but due to the skills and assistance at Our Lady of the Poor Clinic, he can now live a better life.
