Go for Baroque Venus Adonis Program Notes Venus Adonis Synopsis Adapted from Roger Witts Opera Story Prologue After the overture music Cupid appears and addresses the audience explaining who he is and how he can fire his arrows into every human heart and then he asks the audience to welcome the god of Love A chorus of shepherds and shepherdesses decide to be lovesome together Cupid criticizes the courtiers for their amorous affairs saying that the women of the court are only faithful until they see another man and that an aged lord or two are the only ones who remain faithful Cupid then urges all the shepherds and shepherdesses to disappear into the woods and do what your kindest thoughts inspire Act I The First Act reveals Venus and Adonis entwined in one another s arms Adonis suggests that they too should find a shady spot and never disappoint expecting love But before things go too far they hear rural hunting calls Venus urges Adonis to join the hunt but he says that he has already caught the prey that he wants today Venus persists telling him that absence kindles new desire Adonis muses that there are some people who enjoy being fettered but Venus tells him that they are fools encouraging him to join the hunt Adonis is still reluctant but a group of hunters arrive telling him that there is a fierce wild boar nearby that has already savaged the best of their dogs They persuade Adonis to join and lead them and they embark upon the hunt Kaibab 928 774 8731 kaibabvet com Veterinary Clinic State of the art care with small town service Radiology in house lab spay neuter dental and surgical suite and more Arthritis Helping Pets Feel Their Best Post Surgical Serving Northern Arizona for Spinal Conditions nearly 40 years Elbow Hip Dysplasia 400 E Butler Ave Flagstaff AZ 86001 Weight loss Performance Training Hydrotherapy Acupunture Theraputic exercise and much more 928 774 8731 40 400 E Butler Ave therehabnook com Flagstaff AZ 86001

Act 2 Go for Baroque Venus Adonis Program Notes Venus and Cupid are surrounded by many little cupids Cupid tells his mother that she is wise to give her lover his freedom She settles him on her lap fondly and asks him if he has been taking his lessons seriously He says that he has but that he needs to learn how to bring down those who scorn him He then launches into a spelling lesson with the little cupids learning how to spell mercenary and make fun of insolent arrogant and silly people who tease them Cupid comments that love is a school and that those who ignore what it can teach them will suffer the consequences Venus then asks Cupid how she can keep Adonis s affections and calls all the little cupids to dance Venus and Cupid summon all the Graces who appear and sing that mortals below and cupids above all sing the praises of the queen of Love They then perform a series of dances Act 3 Venus in a posture of despair is calling for Adonis She heard that Adonis has been injured and awaits his return from the hunt The wounded Adonis is brought in he tells Venus that he came as quickly as death would let him but that his wound is so great that he cannot survive Venus begs death not to take one so young and Adonis observes that even love cannot defend against death He feels that love is restoring him to life but Venus sees the death in his eyes and holds him tenderly as he dies in her arms Venus calls on the cupids to carry Adonis to heaven and the opera ends with a mournful lament bewailing his death and calling on Echo to mourn too because she can no longer repeat his vows of love in this forsaken grove A Family of Progressive Christian Faith Seeking awareness Challenging injustice Loving and serving with courage JOIN US FOR WORSHIP SUNDAYS AT 10 00 AM www flagstafffederatedchurch org 400 WEST ASPEN AVENUE FLAGSTAFF AZ 86001 928 774 7383 41
