THE VIEW | SUMMER 20255Dear Members, I’m writing this View article with tremendous excitement as we are just a few short months away from welcoming you home to your brand-new food and beverage facilities! Although the exterior may still resemble a construction zone, rest assured that exciting progress is unfolding behind the scenes. Inside, the transformation is well underway. Finishing touches like millwork, wallcoverings, lighting fixtures, and countless other details are coming together beautifully. As we approach the oicial opening, you can expect a steady stream of updates and communications to keep you informed and engaged every step of the way. Today, I’d like to take you behind the scenes and share what the next few months will look like as we prepare to bring Renew ’22 to life. Construction Completion | End of April We remain on track to complete construction by the end of April. This milestone marks the physical completion of the project, but not quite the finish line. The next critical step is obtaining occupancy of the new space, which involves a series of inspections and approvals from key stakeholders, including final sign-o from the District of West Vancouver. Occupancy is a major milestone as it represents the oicial handover of the facility and allows our teams to begin the operational setup. Until this approval is granted, we cannot move into or activate the space, making it an essential part of the timeline. Operational Setup | May Once occupancy is secured, May will be a month of intensive preparation. The construction team will remain onsite to complete deficiency work, while we simultaneously begin receiving and installing hundreds of pieces of furniture, smallwares, and operational supplies. Seing up the space will require a highly coordinated eort. Every detail, from kitchen equipment and bar setups to dishware and décor, needs to be carefully placed and tested to ensure a seamless Member experience from day one. Team Training & Onboarding Equally important are our people. We will be onboarding and training more than 120 new employees in the new facilities throughout May. This phase is essential, as it allows our teams to become comfortable in the new layout, practice workflows, learn our service syllabus, and test menu items. Our goal is to deliver a polished and welcoming experience from the moment we open our doors. So Openings | Late May To ensure we’re fully prepared, we’ll be hosting a series of so openings at the end of May. These events are designed to test the operation - from front-of-house to back-of-house -under real conditions (but limited capacity). They give our team the chance to work through any final adjustments and fine-tune the experience before we oicially welcome all Members. Aer that, it’s go time! CEO/GM REPORT

THE VIEW | SUMMER 20256Temporary Facility Update During this transition, we will make every eort to keep our temporary food and beverage facilities operational. However, there will be a brief window where we must pause service at Intermission, with Bistro Lite remaining open to serve Members during that time. We’ll communicate any changes to operating hours in advance and appreciate your understanding as we enter the final stretch. Welcoming You Home | June! We will be doing everything we can to open our new facilities as soon as possible while also ensuring we spend the necessary time preparing ourselves. Members have been incredibly patient throughout construction and we know everyone is eager to get their Club back! Thank you for your patience, support, and enthusiasm throughout the Renew ’22 journey. We are in the home stretch now, and we cannot wait to welcome you into these new spaces - designed with intention, built for community, and created to elevate every moment you spend at the Club. June is also a busy time for other reasons as we have our Club AGM on June 16. The AGM will mark the close of another Board term. I’d like to take a moment to sincerely thank the Club’s eleven dedicated Board Members for their time and energy. For the past two years, Diane Kennedy has led the Board with exceptional professionalism, integrity, and dedication in her role as Club Chair. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Diane and have seen first-hand her unwavering commitment to strong governance, thoughtful leadership, and ensuring that Members’ voices are both heard and respected. Her steady guidance and collaborative approach have been instrumental in advancing key priorities - most notably, bringing Renew ’22 to life. It is both fiing and well-deserved that Diane will conclude her term by taking part in cuing the ribbon on this transformational project. Please join me in oering our heartfelt thanks to Diane for her outstanding service to the Hollyburn community. Kathryn Cowden CEO, General Manager

THE VIEW | SUMMER 20257BOARD CHAIRDear Members, Last year, I provided insight into how we develop our operating budget, which is primarily funded through monthly dues. As we enter a new fiscal year, I want to shi the focus to our capital budget—how it's developed, why it maers, and why amending two key Bylaws will be essential for the Club’s long-term success. Historically, the Club’s obligatory capital, aspirational capital, and debt servicing rely on the revenue derived solely from new member entrance fees. Obligatory capital is used for the ongoing maintenance and replacement of the Club’s existing assets. These assets include a wide range of items, from mechanical and electrical equipment to interior finishes like flooring and ceiling tiles. Since these assets are essential to the Club’s daily operations, maintaining them is critical to ensuring the Club remains safe and operational. For the past 10 years, consistent new membership sales have allowed the Club to spend on average $1.3M annually on obligatory capital improvements. In this annual mix of projects, the Board is given the authority to make capital expenditure decisions on any single item that does not exceed 5% of the Club’s gross revenues from operations in the prior year (Bylaw 12.2). For example, last year’s limit was $1,065,000, and this upcoming year is projected to be $1,035,000. Under current Bylaws, upcoming projects like a roof replacement, or a new gym floor would have to be phased over a couple of years which is impractical and expensive. In addition, before proceeding with any project above this spending threshold it would be required to be put forward for a Member vote as a special resolution, delaying important projects. Aspirational capital is defined as new projects or investments that are dedicated to enhancing and expanding the Club's assets and increasing Member equity. They contribute to a high degree of Member satisfaction and ensure the Club’s oerings remain strong in relation to the marketplace. Due to its price tag, this type of expenditure typically requires 2/3 voting Member approval through special resolution. Examples include: • Plan 2007: $15M for fitness, swim change rooms, youth, massage, and seismic upgrades. • Plan 2014: $4.7M for Men's & Ladies Spa, hockey large ice slab and four court upper tennis bubble. • Plan 2018: $2.3M to bubble the lower courts and build the lower tennis building. • Renew’22: $23.3M for a complete renewal of family dining, bar and grill dining, bistro oerings, and catering in a premium club venue. The investment also covered a complete renovation of Hollyville and the relocation of Club administration. Long Range Planning Throughout its history, the Board has played a vital role in supporting Management through financial stewardship, governance, and long-term strategy. I am impressed by our Board’s ability to collaborate, uphold our strong legacy and reputation, and continually enhance membership value. This year, our Management team completed a thorough evaluation of the Club’s assets and proposed a 10-year capital maintenance and replacement strategy. The results were concerning: 42% of the Club’s existing assets (excluding those addressed by Renew’22) require either urgent repairs to prevent failure or immediate to near-term MESSAGE

Page 8

THE VIEW | SUMMER 20258replacement. The failure of a critical asset would significantly impact your Member experience. These range from visible upgrades, like replacing aging fitness equipment, to behind-the-scenes essentials, such as arena dehumidifiers, which go unnoticed until they break. The Board has endorsed the recommendation of a spending profile that would eliminate all critical overdue assets and maintain overdue assets to under 20% beyond 2030. Debate over how this can be funded continues as I write this article. One thing is clear; our historic $1.3M annual capital spending is not enough. To get ahead, we will be exploring dierent opportunities to fund the required investments, and we will look at the best practices of other clubs in our peer group Since our capital financing model currently relies solely on revenue derived from new Member entrance fees, a Bylaw amendment is necessary (Bylaw 12.3). Proposed Bylaw Amendments As such, we will be asking Members to vote on an amendment to Bylaws 12.2 and 12.3 at the upcoming AGM in June. The amendment to 12.2 changes the cap on a single capital improvement from 5% to 10% of gross revenue, as follows: Update Bylaw 12.2 to read: “The Board has the authority to make expenditures in furtherance of the purposes of the Club provided that the Board may not spend, in any fiscal year, on any single capital improvement project, an amount in excess of 10% of the Club’s gross revenues from operations in the prior year as determined from the Club’s audited financial statements. An expenditure in excess of this amount shall be authorized by Special Resolution of the Club.” If this Bylaw change was already approved, this year’s cap on spending on a single capital project would be $2,070,000 vs $1,035,000. It is important to note that any project over this size would still require a Member vote and due process. The amendment to 12.3 gives flexibility to explore revenue sources other than new member initiation for capital improvement, as follows: Update Bylaw 12.3 to read: “Unless approved by a Special Resolution, the total capital expenditures for any year shall not exceed the total of the Club’s capital revenue, including entrance fees, in the prior fiscal year, as determined from the Club’s audited financial statements, net of any annual amortization of debt obligations due from previous financings.” These changes will significantly help the Board’s and Management’s ability to address the capital needs of the Club. As we approach the AGM on June 16, 2025, additional information on these proposed changes will be communicated. If you have any concerns leading up to the AGM please email me at board@hollyburn.org As I write this final View article as your Board Chair, I find it hard to believe how quickly time has passed. Serving in this role has sometimes been filled with challenges that pushed me to grow balanced with moments of accomplishment that made it highly satisfying. I have been truly honoured to work alongside a Board and Management team that are not only confident and capable but also deeply commied to the success of our Club. Their insight, collaboration, and dedication have made this experience both rewarding and inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of it. Respectfully, Diane Kennedy Board Chair

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202510Reusables Results & Huge THANK YOU! Hollyburn Country Club launched the Reusables at Hollyburn initiative on December 3rd as a sustainable alternative to single-use takeout containers. In partnership with local company Reusables, the program allows Members to borrow durable containers for food and beverages, which are tracked via Member numbers and returned to Smart Bins for professional onsite cleaning and reuse. The program has seen an outstanding 99% return rate on containers within 30 days, helping divert over 25,000 disposable containers from landfills. This initiative marks a significant step in Hollyburn’s commitment to environmental responsibility and reducing its carbon footprint. Thank you to all of our Members for embracing this change with open arms and doing their part in becoming a more sustainable community! Bear Season is Here, Stay Informed & SafeLast year, we experienced challenges with bears recognizing the Club as a potential food source. This season, we’re being proactive to keep our community and local wildlife safe. Please avoid leaving any food or waste liered on property and report any bear sightings to Member Services or Member Safety immediately. By staying vigilant we can contribute to a safer environment. Thank you for your cooperation!Courtesy Umbrella ProgramStay dry with our new Courtesy Umbrella Program. Grab an umbrella from the designated storage bins and leave it at any Club entrance when you arrive. No need to return it to the lot, just drop it o at the nearest door! Heading back out to your vehicle, grab an umbrella and leave it in the designated parking lot storage bin. These umbrellas are for on-site use only and should remain on Hollyburn property.

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202511YOU SPEAK, WE LISTENMember “I noticed the apples provided for members aer workouts are from the USA. Would it be possible to source BC apples instead? I love having an apple aer exercising, but I’ll hold o until they’re Canadian-grown.”Management: “We are doing our best when it comes to ordering Canadian apples. At this point in the year the demand for local product outstrips the availability. So the choice we are presented is to not provide the service or to bring in what is available. We choose to bring in what is available. Our suppliers know to hold aside as much Canadian apples as they are geing for us to pass onto our Members.” Member “My locker wouldn’t open and I couldn’t reach sta since the landline had no instructions and wouldn’t dial out. I had no phone and was stuck in just a towel, so I called the emergency number for help. Maybe the landline could have front desk info clearly posted for situations like this.” Management: “Thanks for reaching out and leing us know about your experience. That sounds frustrating and we really appreciate you bringing it to our aention. Adding clear dialing instructions to the landline is a great idea, and is now underway! Keep an eye out for updated dialing info plates to be installed with all House phones. It’s important that Members have an easy way to get assistance when needed.” Member “Jadene has done an amazing job of building a fun, inclusive, and high quality skating program. We are so lucky to have her at the helm and I am so appreciative of how much thought and eort she puts into making skating fun for all ages and skill levels.”Member "Aer finishing tennis, we enter the Club through the North (Squash) entrance and head down the stairs to the le, using our fob to access the Men’s Spa. Will facial recognition be installed at this entrance as well? If not, is there a reason why?"Management: “Right now, our focus is on ensuring a smooth rollout of Facial Recognition Access (FRA) for the broader Membership. Since we’re introducing new technology, we’ve taken a phased approach, prioritizing main entrances first. Additional FRA devices in specific areas will follow as we continue enhancing the program. We appreciate your enthusiasm—it’s great to hear you’re finding FRA beneficial and eager to see it expanded! In the meantime, your FOB will continue to provide access at that entrance.” Member "It would be great to have a return bin for reusables inside the upper tennis centre. If that’s not possible, maybe there could be a system where sta collect and return them to the main building receptacles?"Management: "Thank you for your note about Reusables—great suggestion! We always planned to add a bin in the tennis area but wanted to see how the program rolled out first. A bin has now been ordered and should be in place in the coming weeks." Member “I just wanted to say what an amazing job Kennedy does in the Hub. She is completely engaged with the kids, playing with them and providing guidance/enforcement when needed. Our kids and others love it when she is working. I think she’s an excellent example for the other youth/young adults working around the club. She is always positive and commied to her work.”

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202518MEMBER SAFETY & HOSPITALITYHello, Guardians of Club Etiquee!Summer is here, and with it comes sunshine, good vibes, and plenty of time at the Club! While we’re all about fun, let’s take a moment to refresh ourselves on some key House Rules. These guidelines ensure that everyone enjoys a smooth, safe, and respectful experience. Respectful Conduct | We’re in This TogetherThe Issue: The Club is a shared space for all Members, guests, and Team Members. Using inappropriate language, being disrespectful to Team Members, or engaging in behavior that disrupts others’ enjoyment is not in the spirit of our community. What Happens? First-time oenses result in a conversation and a friendly reminder leer. Repeat violations may lead to disciplinary action, including suspensions. Why It’s Important: The Club thrives on respect and hospitality. Let’s create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.Pro Tip: A lile kindness goes a long way. Treat fellow Members, guests, and Team Members with the same respect you’d like in return! Guests Are a Privilege, Not a Free Pass! The Issue: We love that you want to share the Club with your friends, but guest policies exist for a reason. Members are allowed to bring guests a limited number of times per month, and they must always be registered. Unregistered guests or repeat visitors beyond the limit create an unfair experience for paying Members.Guest Rules: Members may register up to two guests per month for access to Club facilities; however, Junior Members may host only one guest at a time. Guests may visit no more than twice per month, even if dierent Members sign them in. A Guest Fee applies when using a facility with your Member-Guest, and all Member-Guests must be registered via the Hollyburn App or at Member Services before entering a facility. Guests must always remain with the hosting Member. If you have a social guest on the property (ie. Dining, Spa, Virtual Sports, etc.), the guest still must be registered by a Member and must remain with that Member while they are on Club property. This helps us ensure a smooth and safe experience for all Members and their guests. What Happens? If your guest isn’t registered, we’ll ask them to leave until they’re properly signed in. If a guest exceeds their visit limit, a fine may be applied to your account. Habitual issues could lead to loss of guest privileges. Why It’s Important: The Club is a Members-first facility. Guest access is a privilege, and fairness ensures that all Members can enjoy the space without overuse from non-Members.Pro Tip: Register guests online ahead of time to avoid any issues and ensure smooth entry for your friends!

Page 19

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202519Fast & Furious? | Not in the Parking Lot!The Issue: We get it—sometimes you’re running late for your tennis match or yoga class. But the Club parking lot is not a racetrack! The speed limit is 20 km/h for a reason. Unsafe driving, improper parking, or blocking entrances is a big no-no.What Happens? First-time speedsters within 24 months will receive a friendly warning. Aer that? Expect fines, potential towing, or even Club privileges being reviewed for repeated violations. Why It’s Important: Safety first! We have families, cyclists, and pedestrians sharing these spaces. Let’s keep it safe for everyone.Pro Tip: Arrive a few minutes early to avoid the need for a NASCAR-level entrance! The Clubhouse is Not a Daycare | Supervise Your Kiddos! The Issue: We love seeing Child-Members enjoying the Club, but children under 8 must always be accompanied by a responsible adult unless in a registered program. Running wild in hallways, common areas, or dining spaces? Not cool (or safe!).What Happens? Unsupervised kids will be escorted to Childminding (with daycare charges applied) while we locate their guardian. Repeat instances may result in suspensions or delayed Junior Member privileges. Why It’s Important: The Club is a community space, not a playground. Let’s make sure our youngest Members stay safe and respectful of others.Pro Tip: Enroll your kids in Club programs to keep them engaged while you enjoy your workout or social time.Gym Etiquee 101 | Wipe It Down & Share the Space! The Issue: Summer bodies are built year-round, but that doesn’t mean we forget our gym manners. Leaving sweat on machines, hogging equipment, or blasting your personal music without headphones? Not the vibe we’re going for. What Happens? A gentle reminder will be given, but continued disregard for gym etiquee could lead to access restrictions. Why It’s Important: We’re all here to get fit and feel good—clean and courteous gym habits make that possible for everyone!Pro Tip: Always grab a small towel and wipe down equipment aer use. And if the gym is busy, be mindful of sharing machines during peak hours. Let’s Keep the Club a Place We All Love!We all come to the Club to unwind, socialize, and enjoy premium facilities. By following these simple guidelines, we ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience—whether they’re here to swim, train, dine, or relax. If you have any questions or need a refresher on any policies, feel free to ask a friendly Team Member. We’re always happy to help! Thanks for making the Club a welcoming, respectful, and fun place for all. See you around the Club!Justin Jennings Manager, Member Services & Security

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202520Calling All MembersWe are seeking nominations for the Bud & Sally Stevens Award! Help us recognize the Members who are truly the heart and soul of the Club by nominating your fellow Members who work tirelessly behind the scenes for the Club, a Commiee or an Activity. HistoryBud & Sally Stevens joined Hollyburn in 1960, making them Charter Members of the Club. Florence Lucy "Sally" Stevens (1919-2005) was an active member, participating in synchronized swimming and curling. Their daughter, Cinde, was very active in synchronized swimming and was one of the "Hollyburn Synchronees," competing in the world competition. Cinde held no fewer than 18 Canadian Championship titles during her swimming career. Prior to retiring in 1970, the Synchronees capped a decade of winning performances by capturing the World Title at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.Aubrey Morell “Bud” Stevens (1918-1999) was a volunteer diving coach at Hollyburn, and his company, Stevens Pools, built the club's swimming pool. During his coaching career, the club produced several provincial and national champions, including Larry Follinsbee and Frank Robb, who represented Canada at the 1967 Pan-Am Games in Winnipeg and later became members of Canada’s National Diving Team. In 1974, Bud and Sally donated a trophy to be awarded annually to individuals, families, or groups who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and contribution to the Club's community. This led to the establishment of the Bud & Sally Stevens Award in their honor. The award continues to be a testament to the Stevens' legacy, encouraging members to uphold the values of service and commitment that Bud and Sally exemplified. It serves as a lasting tribute to their passion for the Club and their dedication to fostering a strong and engaged community. Each recipient of the Bud & Sally Stevens Award embodies the spirit of volunteerism, leadership, and generosity that the Stevens so deeply valued. THE VIEW | SUMMER 202530FITNESSHow to Slowly Get Your Summer Body ReadyAs summer approaches, many people look for ways to feel confident and healthy in their bodies. Instead of resorting to last-minute crash diets or intense workout regimens, taking a slow and steady approach ensures sustainable results. Focusing on proper hydration, quality sleep, and balanced nutrition can help you reach your summer body goals while maintaining overall well-being. Stay Hydrated for Beer ResultsHydration plays a key role in achieving a healthy summer body. Drinking enough water helps regulate metabolism, supports digestion, and keeps your skin looking fresh and glowing. Staying hydrated also helps control hunger, as thirst is oen mistaken for hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, and consider incorporating hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges into your diet.Prioritize Sleep for RecoveryGeing enough sleep is just as important as diet and exercise when working toward your summer body. Sleep is the time when your body repairs muscles, balances hormones, and restores energy levels. Poor sleep can lead to increased cravings, stress, and sluggishness, making it harder to stay consistent with healthy habits. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night by maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a comfortable sleep environment.Fuel Your Body with Proper NutritionA well-balanced diet is crucial for achieving and maintaining a fit and healthy physique. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to provide lasting energy and support muscle growth. Whole foods—such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains—are packed with essential nutrients and fiber, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing cravings for processed snacks. Avoid overly processed foods and excess sugar, as they can lead to sluggishness and unwanted weight gain. By making small, consistent changes to your nutrition and prioritizing whole foods, you'll feel stronger, more energized, and ready for summer.By incorporating these three pillars—hydration, sleep, and nutrition—into your routine, you can gradually build a summer-ready body without the stress of extreme dieting or exercise. The key is consistency, patience, and prioritizing your overall health.Shelley Grisbrook Fitness Centre Manager

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202532HOCKEYBuilding Confidence in HockeySummer Strategies for Mental Strenh for the Upcoming SeasonSummer is the perfect time to hone not only your physical skills but also the mental edge that can make all the dierence in the upcoming season. With fewer structured practices, the o-season presents a valuable opportunity to build confidence and mental resilience—key elements that will pay o when games start again.Establish a Solid Pre-Game RoutineEven without the pressure of upcoming games, a well-defined pre-game routine can set the tone for a focused mindset. Use summer training sessions to practice visualization, stretching, or even listening to your favorite energizing tunes. This routine reinforces focus and confidence, ensuring you're mentally prepared for the season ahead.Action Tip: Take a few minutes before each practice to visualize your key plays, focus on geing into the zone, and mentally prepare. This mental rehearsal sharpens your focus, boosts confidence, and helps you perform at your best when you step onto the ice. Over time, it can become a game-changing tool, enhancing your skills and mindset for the new season. Focus on the Process, Not Just the OutcomeThe upcoming season will be filled with high-pressure moments, but your confidence should come from knowing the work you put in during the summer. Concentrate on improving your technique, decision-making, and physical conditioning rather than obsessing over game results.Action Tip: Set specific, measurable goals for your summer training—whether it's improving your shot accuracy, speed, or defensive positioning. Celebrate each small victory as it builds the foundation for greater success in the season ahead.Embrace Positive Self-TalkConfidence isn't just about physical progress; it's also about training your mindset to stay strong through challenges. How you speak to yourself can make or break your confidence. Develop a habit of replacing negative thoughts with airmations that highlight your strenhs and potential. A positive inner dialogue will help you stay resilient, even during tough training days.Action Tip: Create your own mantra, like "I'm not a failure. I'm not a quier. I'm a fighter," or "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take," and repeat it whenever self-doubt creeps in. This simple practice can help shi your mindset, building greater self-assurance over time. Surround Yourself with a Supportive NetworkThe people you spend time with have a significant impact on your mental outlook. Use the summer months to build relationships with coaches, teammates, and mentors who provide constructive feedback and encouragement. Their support will be invaluable as you prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.Action Tip: Form a small group of training partners or seek out a mentor who can oer regular insights and motivational support. Discuss your goals and progress, and lean on them during moments when confidence wavers.

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202533Celebrate Every AchievementBuilding confidence is a cumulative process. Recognize and celebrate your progress, no maer how small, during the summer. Every improvement, every skill perfected, adds to your belief in your ability to excel when the season starts.Action Tip: Keep a training journal where you log your daily or weekly accomplishments. Reflect on these successes to remind yourself of your growth and capability, especially on challenging days. Maintain Consistent Practice and PreparationConsistency is key to both physical performance and mental resilience. Even if formal games or team practices are on hold, create a structured training schedule that balances skill work, conditioning, and rest. This consistent eort not only sharpens your abilities but also reinforces a mindset of preparedness.Action Tip: Develop a summer workout plan that includes on-ice sessions, o-ice conditioning, and skill drills. Knowing you’ve commied to regular practice builds both competence and confidence. Final ThoughtsBuilding confidence in hockey isn’t just about physical prowess—it’s about cultivating a resilient, positive mindset that can weather the ups and downs of the game. By prioritizing both physical and mental training, you'll step onto the ice not just prepared, but confident and ready to excel in the upcoming season.Griin Reinhart Head of HockeyHuskies AlumniSam ReinhartSam Reinhart, a Hollyburn Huskies Alumni, was a standout at the 4 Nations Cup, playing a pivotal role in Team Canada's gold-medal victory. THE VIEW | SUMMER 202535MUSICMusic Graduations 2025We are proud and privileged to present our talented music graduating students of 2025. Some of them are only few months with us and some are for many years. What is common to all of them is love for music, curiosity and dedication to practicing and constant improvement. Tayson Yang | Voice StudentSherrie has been teaching me for a lile over a year now, and I’ve had quite the enjoyable time. During our lessons, we bond over our shared interest in metal, all the while singing to very mellow songs (such as The National)—it’s quite funny. I am very grateful towards Sherrie, as these lessons have been something I look forward to in my week, and I hope we can continue having fun. Sherrie Christiansen | Voice TeacherTyson started voice lessons in the spring of 2024. His musical taste and interest were vast. Thus began our connection to music and singing. Tyson has such a strong baritone sound that is warm and easy. Once he found his voice, there was no stopping what he could sing. It has been so much fun and an honor to be a part of his musical journey. I wish him all the best when he goes to university to study physics, and I hope he keeps singing in choirs to grow his voice. Darius Vance | Voice StudentI've been working with Sherrie for the past half a year now, even though it feels so much longer. She has helped me cra my sound and voice over the past year so much that I wouldn't call it a stretch to say my singing is all her work. She has been a joy to work with, and I found my lessons with her continuously being the highlight of my week. Thank you, Sherrie! Sherrie Christiansen | Voice TeacherDarius started voice lessons in the spring of 2024. When he first started singing, he took me by surprise with such a big voice. One day, he brought his laptop to class and showed me a song he had composed. Thus began our musical journey as teacher and student. He was taking lessons in theory and composition, and at the same time, singing and working on his own vocal parts to his own songs. He learned how to perform, be an entertainer, and use his music to express his experiences. I wish him all the best in his next adventures at university studying Interdisciplinary Arts. I expect to see him either performing in a band at Rogers Arena or receiving a Grammy. Sam Calder | Guitar StudentI picked up a guitar a couple of years ago, teaching myself how to play the music I most love; I had taken no formal lessons until recently. It is only in the last couple of months that I reached out to Mark at Hollyburn for classes, and I have really been able to start taking what I know to the next level. What I have learned is that it’s never too late to start anything, and I can see that playing the guitar will be a lifelong hobby for me. I will be starting university in September as an engineering major and will have my guitar helping me along the way. Mark Klausmayer | Guitar TeacherWhen Sam first started guitar lessons with me, he had already learned a lot on his own, but he's been rapidly progressing in a short period of time. He has a natural ear and feel for music and is starting to work on writing his own songs. I wish him the best as he graduates Grade 12!

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202536Ziara Modequillo | Piano StudentMy passion for music and learning to play the piano was nurtured six years ago at Hollyburn. At the age of 11, I entered the piano program only knowing a handful of chords and nothing about theory. Looking back, it’s amazing to see how far I’ve grown in both my musical journey and personal development. Nina provided a great musical foundation and exposed me to classical music. Alanna showed me how to integrate creativity and emotion when I perform. Both have grown my appreciation for the art and continued learning. Thank you for these amazing years! Alanna Ho | Piano TeacherFrom the first day I met Ziara, I knew she had a special talent for reading music. There have been lessons where I was unsure whether she learned the music before or was just sight-reading it for the first time! I admire how Ziara naturally expresses her voice through the piano and is open to trying many dierent styles of music with enthusiasm. Ziara—I know you'll be amazing in whatever you do. Good luck in university, and remember to always keep music close! Thank you, Zeralynne and Ryan, for allowing me to share music with your family! Dane Calkins | Piano StudentI’ve been playing piano since I was four years old, but my love for it started with my grandmother. She was my biggest inspiration, and because of her, I fell in love with music. The piano I play today is the same grand piano she used to play, a beautiful family heirloom that feels like a piece of her is still with me. I remember watching her play when I was lile, completely mesmerized by how happy and alive she looked as her fingers danced across the keys. She encouraged me to start my lessons at Hollyburn, where I honed my skills and discovered the joy of sharing music with others. Whenever I sit at that piano, I think of her, and it feels like I’m carrying on her legacy. Alanna Ho | Piano TeacherDane has been studying piano at Hollyburn since he was four, and as a teacher, I'm honored to have been part of his musical journey. From big pop arrangements to sentimental pieces, Dane always displayed incredible musicianship and is a natural performer. He achieves a creative flow when playing piano—this is something that makes any teacher smile. Dane—I wish you the very best in your studies; dream big! Thank you, Jan and Blair, for leing me be a part of Dane's musical journey! Suon Van Dyk | Piano StudentI have been incredibly fortunate to have Vlada as my piano teacher for the past 10 years! I have always played piano for the love of it, enjoying the opportunity to learn a wide range of songs. Each week, I look forward to my piano lesson as a peaceful time to focus on music and catch up with Vlada. I am very passionate about sports, including basketball and track, with field hockey being my main focus. Vlada has always been so understanding and accommodating, making it easy to balance my rigorous sports schedule with my love for piano. Starting this fall, I will be playing NCAA Division 1 field hockey at the University of California, Davis, and studying business. I am so excited to carry what I have learned in piano with me forever and will miss my weekly time with Vlada! Vlada Mars | Piano TeacherSuon started taking piano lessons when she was 8 years old. The past 10 years flew by, and it was a joy watching her grow as a pianist and as a young woman who is ready to take on the world. For me, the biggest achievement as a teacher is not exams or competitions but the weekly dedication of my students, year aer year, and I am very grateful that Suon was part of this magic. Wishing her to always take on new adventures with an open and brave heart!Vlada Mars Music Coordinator

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202538PICKLEBALLPickleball Skill Level RatingsYou can see that many of our Member-run tournaments and leagues include a skill ranking to determine who may want to participate. Many Pickleball players, especially those who have not played in an organized tournament, ask us how they can determine their “Skill Rating.”Most tournaments in BC use Pickleball Brackets as the soware to run the tournament events and this soware will ask you to “self-rate” the first time you sign up. From then on any tournament that you play in will be computed to automatically set your rating on that platform. Then Pickleball Canada (which has a useful article on self-assessment here) will take that rating, use the other factors and come up with your CPTR rating – but we digress! For a majority of you who play recreationally, the question of “what is my rating” will still come up. So here is a chart from Pickleball Canada that defines the skill sets that you need to master to be rated at a certain skill level. If this all still does not help, our Pro Richard Lee may be able to assist. Please reach out to him for details about Member clinics at Pickleball@hollyburn.org.

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202539SK ATINGSummer Skating Renewed – just for you! This is it. A Summer you’ve been waiting for: Hollyburn Renewed! The theme of renewal suggests so many exciting possibilities. Fresh start, next chapter, growth for your family and even progress on the ice. Just for fun, let’s take a lile skating slant on the word: renew. R | Real Time Although it’s been a long renovation with lots of changes along the way, the rewards will be felt in real time. When you walk through the Club and experience the updates, you’ll also feel the inner pull to uplevel. Ever been somewhere on a vacation that made you feel completely alive, just because of how beautiful and inviting it was? That’s it. The feeling of ‘real time renewal’. Skating slant: Everything magical on the ice happens in ‘real time’. The feeling of catching that amazing edge and gliding end to end. A tremendous take-o on the perfect jump as you launch into the air. Even the calm center of the fastest spin can feel like pure aliveness. This summer, let yourself feel the empowered version of you on the ice in real time!E | EnergyRenovation requires energy, but upon completion, there is energy that is now released! The wait is over. The freshness is palpable. Energy can now move freely in and out of the space we share. And energy leads to expansion. The growth of a summer season can really expand your experience. Skating slant: Energy is essential to skating. Even with the physics of it, until one applies energy in the form of friction into the ice from bending, there is no glide. I like to say: ‘Bend is your friend’ when teaching all levels of skating! It’s so true... Put the energy into the ice & access the reward of gliding across the surface. The best part is that the energy put in gets transformed into art. The reward of skating is that what you put in, you definitely get out! N | NatureSometimes, we forget that we are part of nature too. In an age of technology, AI, and all our time connecting through phones, it’s easy to separate ourselves mentally from our own nature. But it hasn’t gone anywhere. We’re still human and we thrive on renewal. Summer is a time where the days are longer, the light is brighter, and the craving for movement is strong. This is a season to be in nature and to pay aention to our own inner nature as well.Skating slant: On the ice, it’s time to approach movement with a natural feel. Many skaters will go through growth spurts in the Spring & Summer. It’s a time to connect with the nature of their new movement and harness their newfound strenh! Artistically, it’s also a time to engage with the natural movement style of the individual and expand the performance level in preparation for Fall. E | Expand We’ve touched on this above and now it’s time to focus on it. Summer really is a time for expansion. Travel expands the horizons. Kids expand past that last year of school as they grow & get ready for the next year. Families expand in their communication together as each person changes in their own ways. The best part is that we have the chance to expand intentionally. To set our intentions for Summer and choose how we want to show up, participate, and thus expand this year.

Page 40

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202540Skating slant: Every summer, I witness the expansion of the skaters who choose to put in the work during the summer months. Working on their cra, the progress that is made in this time is a huge skating expansion heading into the Fall. Ironically, it doesn’t take that much to make a big dierence. Skaters expand mentally as well. They tend to see themselves in a new way as they develop new skills, abilities, and reach new milestones on the ice. It’s an inspiring time! W | Win What will be your win of the summer? Just like the Hollyburn Team intended that the Club would fully re-open and be at a whole new level this summer, what is your intended win? Will it be a dedicated family night at the Club each week? How about trying a new sport? Maybe it’s just time to be really consistent with workouts for the win. Wins are personal; they have to maer to the person achieving them. Skating slant: When it comes to skating, I’ve always said that you discover your personal performance style and win from within. This can happen at any age or stage of the game. But the privilege to feel your own movement style on the ice is beyond a win; it’s priceless. No maer what you choose to engage in this summer, may you feel renewed! May the Hollyburn Experience enhance your summer months and the memories you make along the way. And if you want to skate we’ll be here to get you gliding. Jadene Shannon Head of Skating

THE VIEW | SUMMER 202542Basic Rules & GameplayThe objective of the game is for players to take turns hiing the ball against the front wall, above the tin and below the out line. The ball may strike the side or back walls at any time, as long as it hits below the out line. A ball that lands on the out line, or the line along the top of the tin, is considered to be out. Aer the ball hits the front wall, it is allowed to bounce once on the floor (and any number of times against the side or back walls) before a player must return it. Players may move anywhere around the court but accidental or deliberate obstruction of the other player’s movements is forbidden. Players typically return to the center of the court aer making a shot. Each game is played to 11 points. The player who scores 11 points first wins the game except if the score reaches 10-all, when the game continues until one player leads by two points. Either player may score points (PAR – point-a-rally). The server, on winning a rally, scores a point and retains the service; the receiver, on winning a rally, scores a point and becomes the server.Points are awarded if, during the course of play:• The receiver fails to strike the ball before it has bounced twice• The receiver hits the ball out (either on or above the out line, or on the tin) or misses the front wall• Interference resulting in a stroke, i.e. point to the obstructed playerHow many people play Squash in the worldSquash is gaining popularity worldwide, with over 20 million people in 130 countries playing the sport on approximately 50,000 courts. The recreational appeal of squash is increasing with the rising number of courts and sales of beginner and intermediate rackets. THE VIEW | SUMMER 202547Connection Between Posture & PainPoor posture causes back, neck, and shoulder pain, oen due to prolonged siing, improper workstations, and muscle imbalances. Over time, it can lead to chronic pain and mobility issues. Massage therapy relieves tension, improves circulation, and restores muscle balance, eectively easing posture-related discomfort. How Poor Posture Leads to Pain Muscle ImbalancesSlouching or hunching over screens creates muscle imbalances, where some muscles tighten and others weaken. Common issues include tight chest muscles pulling shoulders forward, weak back muscles causing a rounded upper back, and tight hip flexors straining the lower back. Restricted Circulation & Joint StressPoor posture limits blood flow, causing muscle fatigue, stiness, and headaches. It also places excessive strain on joints, leading to inflammation and chronic pain in areas like the spine, shoulders, and hips. How Massage Can Help Releasing Tension & Enhancing FlexibilityMassage therapy targets tight muscles, breaking down adhesions and improving elasticity. Techniques like deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and myofascial release help restore natural posture and movement.Reducing Pain & Promoting RelaxationMassage improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and releases endorphins to ease discomfort. It also relieves tension, making it easier to maintain good posture naturally. Supporting Good Posture Beyond MassageTo support good posture beyond massage, incorporate stretching and strenhening exercises, adjust your workstation for beer ergonomics, and regularly check and correct your posture. ConclusionMassage therapy helps reduce pain and improve posture by relieving muscle tension and enhancing flexibility. Combined with exercise and ergonomic habits, it plays a key role in maintaining long-term postural health. If you struggle with posture-related discomfort, regular massage sessions can be a valuable part of your wellness routine. THE VIEW | SUMMER 202555Aquatic Program F.A.Q.Q: What programs does HCC Aquatics oer? A: We oer the HCC Parent and Tot, HCC Preschool, the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life, and the Lifesaving Society Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross. We also oer adult swimming programs such as Aquafit and M&M’s, and first aid courses (CPR-C/ AED and Standard First Aid) as well. Q: We want to get our children into swimming, where do we start?A: Children under the age of 3 will start out in the HCC Parent and Tot program depending on comfort level. At age 2, our Intro to Penguin classes give children a chance to challenge entry to unparented lessons. Preschool children (3–5 yrs) should start in Egg, and school aged children (5+ yrs) should start in Swimmer 1. Q: It’s been a while since we swam or we swam in a dierent program. Which level should we register for? A: We are happy to arrange a 5-minute swim evaluation with one of our sta. Simply arrange a time during any general swim and we can tell you the best level for them. This is especially important for safety and quality assurance, children signed up for a level too advanced for them will be removed from the class. We always try to move them to a beer class, but if we cannot the original fee will not be refunded. Q: How do I know which level to register for next session? A: All swimmers will receive a level recommendation handout prior to the registration deadline each set. We ask that all participants bring past reports to any upcoming sessions so their instructors can continue to fill them out as your child progresses. Final report cards with feedback from the instructor will be handed out on the final day of class.Racquet - Swim Combo Programs!*Mon–Fri on selective weeksHollyburn is happy to oer several combined athletics programs to keep our young members healthy and physically active. THE VIEW | SUMMER 2025112WELLNESSAcupuncture Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of "Qi" (energy) and promote natural healing. It is based on the concept of balancing the body’s energy pathways, or meridians, to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and improve overall health. Modern acupuncture is also supported by evidence showing its ability to stimulate the nervous system, release endorphins, and improve blood circulation. Laser Acupuncture *NEW*Laser acupuncture is a modern, non-invasive adaptation of traditional acupuncture that uses low-level laser beams instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points. This approach is particularly useful for individuals who are needle-averse or have sensitive skin. It provides similar therapeutic benefits, such as pain relief, inflammation reduction, and improved tissue healing, by enhancing cellular function and circulation through photobiomodulation. Cosmetic Acupuncture *NEW*Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial acupuncture, focuses on improving skin health and appearance by targeting acupuncture points on the face and body. This treatment stimulates blood flow, collagen production, and muscle tone, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and puiness. It is a natural, holistic approach to rejuvenating the skin and promoting overall wellness without the use of chemicals or invasive procedures. Microneedling *NEW*Microneedling is a minimally invasive skincare treatment that involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production. It is widely used to improve skin texture, reduce scars, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation, and promote a more youthful, radiant complexion. Microneedling can also enhance the absorption of topical skincare products for improved results.

THE VIEW | SUMMER 2025113Heated Cupping with Gua Sha *NEW*Heated cupping and Gua Sha are traditional Chinese medicine techniques oen used together to promote healing, relieve muscle tension, and improve circulation. In heated cupping, glass or silicone cups are warmed and placed on the skin to create suction, drawing blood flow to the area and releasing fascial restrictions. Gua Sha involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate microcirculation, break up adhesions, and reduce inflammation. Together, these therapies work synergistically to alleviate muscle pain, improve range of motion, and promote detoxification, leaving the body feeling relaxed and revitalized.
