THE VIEW | SPRING 20254Dear Members, Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual Member Satisfaction Survey. As Diane noted in her article, 29% of Members completed this year’s survey. While we hoped for a higher response rate, the results are statistically accurate and will guide positive changes. We understand that providing feedback was challenging for some Members during ongoing Club construction. Others shared a preference for using the "You Speak, We Listen" channel for quicker responses. We appreciate all feedback, whether through surveys or real-time channels. Your input as Club owners is vital to driving improvements and shaping the Club’s future. I always remind our team that Member feedback is like having the answers to a test—it eliminates guesswork, highlights areas for improvement, and reinforces what we’re already doing well. One benchmarking metric I always look forward to reviewing is the overall Member satisfaction score. Last year, we achieved a score of 85.7%, and this year’s score came in at 85.1% (on the Likert scale of 1 to 7, the mean satisfaction score was 5.54 for both years). Given that we’re operating with temporary food and beverage facilities—our most utilized amenity—I’m proud of what we accomplished. That said, this score highlights the need for continued eort, as my goal is to elevate the number into the high 80’s. On the topic of the survey, I thought I would spend some time addressing a few survey themes that I observed in the data. Parking Parking was also a hot topic in the survey. Understandably, hopes to snag one of the prime Member parking spots, especially in the dark of winter, is top of mind for Members. At this time, we are constrained by the number of parking stalls that we have on-site, but we are implementing new technology to help alleviate the problem. In the coming months, we will be implementing two new parking technologies to enhance your experience. The first is parking allotment signage, which will display the number of available stalls in each parking lot. While this won’t increase the total number of spaces, it will significantly reduce the time spent searching for a spot. The second is License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology. This system will greatly assist our Security Team in distinguishing Members from Member-Guests, improving data collection, and enhancing tracking capabilities. While this technology won’t create additional parking, it will help ensure that coveted spots are reserved exclusively for Members, optimizing the use of existing spaces. CEO/GM REPORTWe understand parking can be a challenge during busy times, but please do not park in the limited handicap parking stalls without accreditation.

THE VIEW | SPRING 20255Renew ’22 Construction I couldn’t help but chuckle at a few comments suggesting that we renovate our food and beverage facilities. Those Members will be pleased to know that Renew ’22—a comprehensive revitalization of our food and beverage facilities, including kitchens, the restaurant, bistro, and catering spaces—will be completed by June 2025. This $23.3M capital investment remains on time and on budget. For the latest project updates, please see page 10. Club Busyness We ask for a Net Promoter Score (NPS), a key benchmark metric, as it reflects overall Member experience and helps predict growth. Members categorized as "detractors"—those unlikely to recommend the Club and who may discourage others from joining—oen cited the Club feeling “too busy” as their primary concern. It’s worth noting that new Members are admied only at the rate of annual arition, ensuring we stay well within our Membership cap. The Club is experiencing record-high utilization, which reflects the strong appeal of our oerings. However, this increased demand also highlights facility and programming constraints during peak times. Interestingly, historical trends and demographic data reveal that the overall composition of our Membership has remained relatively stable over time. Clark McKenzie, our CFO, describes this as the "Conveyor Belt Theory." Essentially, Members move through dierent life stages together, creating a natural ebb and flow within the Club. For instance, families who once heavily relied on programming may reduce their participation as their children grow up and leave for university. Meanwhile, younger families join the Club and take their place in these programs, ensuring a steady and balanced cycle of activity. Management is actively working to enhance Member experiences and identify operational eiciencies to increase capacity in high-demand areas and activities. Club Rules and Enforcement Members have highlighted the importance of Club rules, with 94% indicating they are familiar with the Club’s policies and codes of conduct. However, only 68% feel that the Club eectively enforces these rules. This feedback provides a clear directive for Management to hold Members more accountable. It’s important to note that a considerable amount of Management’s time is spent addressing rule violations, which can be both challenging and time-consuming. For a deeper understanding of this issue, I encourage you to read Justin Jennings’ article on page 18. "Respect" is a core value of the Club, and I urge everyone to show respect to fellow Members and the Club rules that help maintain a positive environment. Community Finally, I want to leave you on a positive note. Aer reviewing the survey comments, it’s clear how much our Members care about Hollyburn. It's inspiring to see such strong enthusiasm and a genuine desire for deeper connections within our community. Management is wholeheartedly commied to enriching your experience, delivering exceptional hospitality, and continuously enhancing our facilities to create even greater value for you.Be sure to look out for a survey summary with more detailed data in the next issue of The View! Keep that feedback coming! Kathryn Cowden CEO, General Manager

THE VIEW | SPRING 20256BOARD CHAIRDear Members, The Member survey results are in. With 1,438 respondents—29% of our membership—your feedback is helping shape the future of our club. One of the key metrics we compute is the Net Promoter Score (NPS) from your answer to the question "How likely are you to recommend [company/product/service] to a friend or colleague?". This simple yet insightful measure is easy to track over time making it useful for monitoring improvement and gives us an indication of how likely our Members are to recommend the club to friends and colleagues. While our NPS is slightly beer than last year, we recognize there is a great deal of room for improvement. A common theme in the feedback is the understandable frustration around our temporary food and beverage operations and a sense of feeling crowded. Members have shown remarkable patience and understanding, recognizing the dedication of Management and Sta, who are doing their utmost with the resources available. The good news is that our current food and beverage facilities, are only temporary during construction! There’s an undeniable buzz of excitement and anticipation as we approach the completion of our renovations and prepare to open our stunning new restaurant facilities on schedule in early summer. We already know that we have the best patio in Vancouver, and as one member stated, “Nothing nicer than dinner on the outer deck in the summer”.Your voices maer, and we’re commied to turning all your feedback into actionable improvements. Together, we can create an even beer Member experience for everyone. Thank you for your continued support and input. It drives everything we do. Respectfully, Diane Kennedy Board ChiarMESSAGE

The design also pays homage to the clean, modern architectural lines of our building, with a central diamond symbolizing the strong sense of connection within our community. The new emblem is versatile, oering both a full design and an “H” monogram that can be used across various mediums, including signage, apparel, and more. THE VIEW | SPRING 20258YOU SPEAK, WE LISTENMember: I just want to say how excited I am about the Club’s Reusables initiative- this is an amazing idea and I completely applaud the undertaking the Club is commiing to- way to go! It makes me horrified to see all of the wax paper containers and cups overflowing our garbages. Member: This evening, I noticed multiple cars parked in the "No Parking" zone near the side entrance, creating a safety hazard, especially with kids and no designated walkway. Despite reporting one vehicle to the front desk, the issue persisted, with two more cars parked there later. Please address this by reminding Members about parking rules and having security monitor the area during peak times.Management: We agree that any parking along the Fire Route is dangerous & adds an unnecessary obstacle within the parking facility. Our Member Safety Team has been working diligently to assist during high peak times with traic congestion and floats between the four Member lots. We will be sure to include additional patrols of the Main Member lot during peak times and at nightfall to beer safeguard the flow of this lot.Member: I want to share how impressed I am with the front desk team overall, but I’d like to give special recognition to Kamille at Member Services. She is consistently engaging, friendly, and always goes above and beyond to assist or resolve any issues with exceptional eiciency. Kudos to Kamille for her outstanding service!Member: The faucet by the kids' bathrooms in Hollyville is extremely loose and appears to be close to coming o.Management: Thank you for leing us know about the faucet. Our Maintenace Team has resolved the issue by tightening and re-enforcing the faucet. Member: I wanted to compliment the F&B Team on the job they're doing at Intermission. With limited resources they continue to deliver a quality product. I would also like to recognize the sta who, continue to provide superior service. Great job everyone!Member: Myself and other Members have found that the showers in the Swim Changerooms are taking a long time to get warm and don’t stay hot. Can anything can be done about this?Management: We had been working with a plumber to address the issue and get the shower temperature issue resolved as soon as possible, and are very happy to report that we found an issue with a regulator pump that has now been replaced. You will now find the Swim Changerooms showers reach temperature much more immediately, as well as stay hot! Thank you for your patience. Member: I had sent feedback a few weeks ago regarding the dark path by the lower tennis courts, and was so happy to see the path fully lit tonight with new lighting! Thank you so much!

THE VIEW | SPRING 20259Member: I noticed a new logo being used around the Club, is that new and is the flag gone? Management:You’re absolutely right! Hollyburn has recently undergone a rebranding, which Members will see unfold over the coming months. This transformation is part of our commitment to continuous improvement, and refreshing our branding with a modern perspective is a key aspect of the process. While there was nothing inherently wrong with the previous "flag" logo, the new emblem was thoughtfully designed to beer reflect Hollyburn and our vibrant community today. It incorporates key elements of our core activities, such as athletic courts (tennis, pickleball, badminton), center ice, and swimming lanes. The design also draws inspiration from the clean architectural lines of our building, with a central diamond symbolizing the strong sense of community that defines Hollyburn.Additionally, this new design oers greater versatility, with the option to use the full emblem or the “H” monogram across a wide range of applications—from signage to apparel—creating a cohesive, modern, and dynamic brand identity. We’re excited to bring this refreshed vision to life and strenhen the connection between our Club and its Members.Member: I just wanted to express how absolutely outstanding the Grand Wine Tasting event was! The squash court setup was so creative and made for a unique and elegant atmosphere. The live musician added the perfect ambiance throughout the evening. The food was exceptional—beautifully presented and delicious. And of course, the wine vendors were fantastic, and brought such a nice array of wines. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this event such a success. It was truly a night to remember!Member: The holiday lights and Christmas decorations are superb! What an amazing job, it is so appreciated. Thank you!Member: There are individuals outside the Bistro conducting lenhy business conversations on Zoom, oen with laptops on their laps. This is not an appropriate space for such activities, yet sta pass by without addressing it. Members shouldn’t have to step in to point out that this is not the right seing for business meetings.Management: The viewing lounge area should be a place for Members to connect with one another on a human level, or for Members to conduct quiet work. Any Member who has a device that is making excessive noise, or has their phone on speakerphone, should be reminded that earphones are required at all times. In addition, common courtesy should be extended by anyone using a Communication Device by conversing in low tones. With this in mind, I will ensure to add this reminder to our internal communications as well as next week's Member e-Newsleer. In addition, I have reminded our Manager on Duty Team Members to pay special aention to this policy moving forward.Member: New Year’s Eve Bash – we had a wonderful time, and the aention to our family’s dietary needs was excellent. It was a lot of fun! However, the music was so loud during dinner that it was hard to have a conversation, even when speaking directly into someone’s ear. It would be great to have the volume lowered for at least the first hour while people are eating. A festive atmosphere doesn’t need to be that extreme.Management: Thank you so much for your feedback about the New Year’s Eve Bash. We’re thrilled to hear that you and your family had a wonderful time and that the dietary needs of your group were well accommodated.I appreciate your comments about the music volume during dinner. It’s very helpful to hear this perspective, and we completely understand how important it is to strike a balance between creating a lively atmosphere and allowing for easy conversation during the meal. Your suggestion to lower the volume for the first part of the evening is a great solution, and we’ll absolutely take it into account for next year’s event.

THE VIEW | SPRING 202514REUSABLESINTRODUCING Dear Members,We’re excited to announce a new sustainability initiative that we have launched: Reusables at Hollyburn! This program oers Members a sustainable alternative to single-use takeout containers for food and beverages.Previously, Hollyburn has used over 15,000 disposable takeout containers per month, including paper cups, lids, and boxes. These wax-lined containers are "mechanically compostable" and must be shipped to specialized facilities outside of Canada for proper processing. In reality, most of these containers end up in British Columbia’s landfills. To reduce this unnecessary waste, we’ve partnered with Reusables, a local company, to introduce a reusable takeout container program. Members can enjoy their food and beverage items in a Reusables containers at Bistro Lite. Once used, the containers can be returned to a Smart Bin at the Club, where they are scanned and professionally washed onsite for reuse. How to Use Reusables at Bistro Lite:1. Pick up a takeout item or order your beverage in a Reusables container.2. At checkout, the container will be scanned and linked to your Member number.3. Enjoy your food or drink wherever you like—at the Club or on the go!4. Return the container to a Smart Bin located around the Club within 30 days to avoid a replacement fee. Simply scan the container’s boom to open the bin. We invite you to try Reusables for your next takeout order at Bistro Lite. Disposable paper cups and boxes are still available for a small fee ($0.75 for cups and $1.00 for boxes), or you can bring your own tumbler for beverages. Reusables Are now available in Intermission Bar & Grill. We appreciate your support as Hollyburn takes this important step toward environmental stewardship. Together, we can make a significant impact on reducing our carbon footprint while seing a standard for sustainability. Reusables FAQ For questions, please refer to the FAQ or contact Paul Benallick, Director of Food & Beverage, at PBenallick@hollyburn.org. We welcome your feedback on the Reusables at Hollyburn program and look forward to your participation! Thank you,The Hollyburn Team

THE VIEW | SPRING 202518MEMBER SAFETY & HOSPITALITYHello, Stewards of Club Safety! It’s time for your quarterly dose of Member Services & Safety news — with a twist! We’re here to share some important reminders, but with a sprinkle of fun, so you don’t just read this — you enjoy it. Let’s dive right into a few things we’ve noticed lately and remind everyone of the rules that keep our Club safe, friendly, and enjoyable for all. Spa Time for the Grown-Ups: No Kids Allowed! The Issue: We continue to see an inflex of Child-Members under 19 years old gaining entrance into the Spa facilities during o-peak hours. What Happens: We love that everyone is eager to relax, but the Spa is for adults only! First oense? We’ll chat to make sure you’re aware of the policy. Aer that? You’ll be subject to a 14-day suspension from Club property. Why it’s a Big Deal: The Spa is designed for a quiet, peaceful retreat, best suited for adults. We don’t want anyone geing into hot water (literally or figuratively) with oerings that are tailored for our Adult Members only. Just as the Club has invested in ensuring there are child/teenager focused areas; the Spa is one of the only spaces reserved just for adults. Pro Tip: If you’re under 19, there’s plenty of fun to be had at the pool! Let’s keep those saunas and steam rooms for the grown-ups. Accessible Parking Isn’t a “Quick Stop” Spot! The Issue: We know those accessible spaces are conveniently located next to many main entrance doors. We’ve placed them there for a good reason! Parking in accessible spaces for a "quick pick-up" without the proper permit restricts your fellow Members from also enjoying the Club. Don't be a Space Invader. What Happens: First time, we’ll leave a friendly note on your windshield. The second time? We’ll have to issue a parking fine of $100.00CAD and potentially have your vehicle towed — and that’s no fun for anyone. Why It’s Important: Accessible parking is reserved for those who need it. Quick stops block spaces for Members who truly rely on them. So, let’s all do our part to keep the Club accessible for everyone. Pro Tip: If you're just picking someone up, park in a regular Member spot. It only takes a minute longer, but it makes a big dierence for others.

Page 19

THE VIEW | SPRING 202519Kids Under 8? Keep ‘Em Close! The Issue: Unaended kids under 8 wandering the clubhouse quickly becomes a safety concern & negatively impacts other Members. Children running in common corridors also creates a tripping hazard. ***Child-Members under 8 may travel corridors when on route to a program only. Child- Members are expected to walk. What Happens: We’re all about fun, but lile ones need supervision! If we spot unsupervised kiddos wandering the Club, we’ll kindly remind them about the policy & promptly bring them to the HUB or Childminding services (subject to Member daycare charges). We’ll also ensure to track down guardians and remind them of our House Rules. Repeat oenses? We might have to look into delaying Junior Member privileges and/or guardian discipline measures which starts at a 7-day suspension. Why It’s Important: Safety first! The Club can be a busy place, and we need to ensure that all Members — including young ones — are looked aer at all times. Pro Tip: Keep your lile adventurers close or check out our child-friendly programs designed just for them. They’ll love it, and you’ll get a lile peace of mind! Keep It Quiet in Common Spaces — Headphones Are Your Friend! The Issue: Using electronic devices without headphones or blaring speakerphone in common areas takes away from everyone’s enjoyment. We know you’re rocking your work calls, we don't need the proof. What Happens: If we hear music or loud calls, we’ll kindly ask you to pop in your headphones or lower the volume. If it keeps happening, we might need to look into a 7-day Club suspension. Why It’s Important: Common spaces are for relaxing and socializing — not for public listening sessions! Loud noises can disturb others, and we want everyone to enjoy these shared spaces peacefully. Pro Tip: Always bring your headphones when you’re out and about, or take calls in designated areas such as Intermission outside of serving hours. Let’s keep the vibes chill and the volume down. Let’s Keep It Classy — No Profanity, Please! The Issue: Using profanity or inappropriate language at the Club creates an unsafe environment and diminishes the Club’s values: Community, Respect, Hospitality, Evolve & Magic. What Happens: If we catch wind of foul language, we’ll remind you to keep it respectful. If it continues, we’ll need to have a more serious conversation & a 14-day Club suspension. We’re all about good vibes here! Why It’s Important: The Club is a place for everyone, and we want to maintain a welcoming environment for all ages. A lile kindness goes a long way, and that includes watching our language. Pro Tip: Feeling frustrated? Take a deep breath and walk it o. A lile patience and respect make the Club a more enjoyable place for all.

THE VIEW | SPRING 202520We all know the Club is where we come to unwind, socialize, and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. So let’s keep it fun and respectful by following these simple guidelines. They’re designed to make sure everyone has a positive experience, no maer their age, activity, or mood. As always, if you have any questions or need clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our friendly Team Members are here to help — and we’re always happy to chat! Thanks for being an awesome part of our community. Let’s keep making memories while keeping the Club a safe, enjoyable space for everyone! Stay safe (and fun), Justin Jennings Manager, Member Services & Security

THE VIEW | SPRING 202521FEATURED ATHLETEMy name is Connor Sen, and I’m 10 years old. I love playing squash and work hard to get beer at the sport. Before every game, I have a good luck ritual of drinking lots of water, which helps me feel ready to compete. Besides squash, I enjoy playing badminton and pickleball, and I also like cross-country skiing in my spare time. I think my success in squash comes from practicing regularly and staying commied. Johnny Sexton is one of my biggest inspirations because he’s such a great leader, and I try to bring some of that leadership into my own game. The best advice I’ve ever received is to “keep your racquet up,” and I’ve learned from sports to always be kind and to never cheat. My next big goal in squash is to win a tournament, but my ultimate dream is to beat Ryan—it’s a challenge I’m determined to take on! One of my biggest strenhs in matches is my speed, which helps me chase down the ball and stay competitive on the court.CONNOR SENFTSquash

Over the last few years, it has been so heartwarming seeing the impact our Give Back initiative has had on our local community and this year is no dierent. Our commiees select an initiative that is meaninul to them supporting youth, families, animals and more. This has quickly become a tradition our commiees look forward to each year. BadmintonThe Badminton Commiee hosted its Christmas Fundraiser on December 7th. This event aims to celebrate the holiday season with our badminton families while raising funds for this year's chosen charity, Backpack Buddies.Backpack Buddies, founded in North Vancouver in 2012, addresses the "weekend hunger gap"—a critical issue where children who depend on school meal programs face hunger over the weekends. Today, the organization supports over 6,000 children weekly, delivering more than 1.65 million meals during the 2023/24 school year across 73 communities in BC.Given that many of our badminton families reside on North Shore and have young children, we believe a hands-on activity is meaninul. We plan to take the badminton kids to Backpack Buddies on one of their training days. This will give them an opportunity to learn firsthand about the organization’s mission, the people they’re helping, and how impactful their contributions can be.Furthermore, we hope our kids will learn how collective eorts can make a meaninul impact. Through the Backpack Buddies activity, we aim for them to develop a deeper awareness of the challenges many families face, and the essential role community organizations play in oering support. This experience serves as a reminder of the value of teamwork and the dierence we can make when we come together for a common cause.Men’s HockeyThe Men’s Hockey program, under Gri Smith’s leadership organized a 3-on-3 Christmas Charity Hockey Extravaganza for Covenant House on December 15 at the Club. This event consists of 4 teams, all members, except a goalie or two, with a $100 entry for the 28 skaters and 4 goalies. Refreshments were provided and at Christmas time the donation was tripled by an anonymous philanthropist. It was the perfect way to celebrate the holidays and provide support to Covenant House, a cause many of us hold in high regard. This year the Hockey Commiee organized a Cork Sale Fundraiser, where players will sell corks, each of which are numbered, and correspond to a matching ‘prize’. Participants may have now a valuable bole, or not! The week of December 16th-20th we capitalized on the busy Holiday 3-on-3 tournament to encourage greater participation.ACTIVITY COMMITTEETHE GIFT OF GIVING

THE VIEW | SPRING 202523HockeyThe Hockey Commiee has chosen to support the Kelty Foundation as part of the Holiday Give Back Initiative. In the time since his parents lost Kelty to suicide from depression, Hollyburn Members Ginny and Kerry have built an incredible foundation dedicated to providing resources for kids and teens to address their mental health struggles. Through the Foundation, they’ve raised over $8 million to create Kelty Dennehy Mental Health Resource Centres in both BC Children’s Hospital & Lions Gate Hospital. Our hope is that none of our players need to use these critical resources but there is comfort in knowing that they are in place today and are available to kids and teens in our community should they need it.SkatingThis year, the Hollyburn Skating Commiee chose to support the Vancouver SPCA, in honor of our mascot Pekí! Skaters picked up a skate to decorate between December 1st-13th (the last day of skating before the winter break). All decorated skates were displayed in the large ice viewing gallery. Skaters made a donation to the SPCA. With so many requests for giving over the holiday season, this was a meaninul cause for our skaters.SquashThe Squash Commiee fundraised for North Shore Family Services Christmas Bureau. North Shore Family Services reaches out to approximately 2500 families on the North Shore who are in need of some help at this time of year. Their Christmas bureau group selects families aer interviewing them and qualifying the families based on income. We asked each member of the Squash community to consider contributing to this cause. We made amazing progress towards our fundraising goal. TennisThe Tennis Commiee with incredible direction by Sharon Jenvey, put together an Adopt-A-Christmas Tree initiative in support of 4 charities on the North Shore keeping it close to home. Living on the North Shore we oen forget that there are many not as fortunate in our community and the following services provide incredibly valuable support. Members and sta cut, and decorated cardboard trees posted on the Tennis bulletin board. For each tree adopted, $25.00 was charged to the Member's account. As of December 1st $1600, had already been raised and we had to make more trees! As a bonus, for each tree purchased the Tennis Commiee is donating $5.00 for a tree to be planted by Tree Canada national greening program. With so many Members engaged in Tennis at the Club we want to oer an opportunity for everyone to contribute and benefit those less fortunate in our communities. The Adopt-A-Christmas Tree board is an easy and convenient way to raise funds. We learned that by making the initiative simple and easy, Members and Sta were willing and eager to support the cause.

THE VIEW | SPRING 202524Youth The Youth Commiee chose to support Blanket BC Support Us | BlanketBC Society. The commiee collected gently used or new blankets, miens, gloves, scarves, toques and NEW socks! There were large boxed in the Kids Club, Club lobby and outside the Hub to collect donations. We choose to support this organization because this is the time of year where you see less fortunate Vancouverites huddled on the street trying to stay warm as our temperatures dip and they are in desperate need of items to keep them warm. Why not give, it’s good for the soul! Aer speaking with the founder, we realized most people have been in the same situation as him when the charity was spawned. You walk out of a restaurant, movie theatre, away from a Canucks game and there are people on the street simply trying to stay warm. If you could give them a blanket, gloves or a toque to help them survive, shouldn’t we do that? A blanket could be the only way they survive the night if a shelter isn’t available or an option for them. Also, with growing/grown kids, we’re sure everyone has a pair of gloves/mis, a toque and a blanket kicking around to donate! PickleballOver the last two years the Pickleball Commiee has raised $22,000 donations for a variety of charities. This holiday season we ran our Bash and Dasher Holiday event on December 14th for the benefit of North Shore Family Services (NSFS) Christmas Bureau. The Hollyburn ladies, managed by Elsbeth Cooper, made Christmas pickleball-themed tree ornaments that were sold at our Bash and Dasher event. All proceeds went to support NSFS. In 2023 donated $1500 and our goal for this was to reach $2000!

THE VIEW | SPRING 202530Things You Need to Know Board Structure & Eligibility Regular Members of Hollyburn Country Club elect 11 Members to the Board of Directors - 6 Directors are elected in even-numbered years and 5 directors in odd-numbered years. Board Directors are elected to two-year terms and are eligible to serve for a maximum of eight years. The Nominating Commiee accepts nominations of Members in good standing for the role of Director and reviews the nominees against the board matrix to make their selection. The selected candidates are presented to the Membership to vote on at the Annual General Meeting in June. In accordance with Article 6.9.4 in the bylaws, a Member interested in running for the board may also elect to run as an Independent Director by being nominated by five Members in good standing. Time Commitment The time commitment is considerable, but not overwhelming. There are 7 scheduled Board meetings per year that are normally held on Tuesday Evenings. The meetings are typically three hours in lenh over dinner. Board Members are also encouraged to aend other functions over the course of the year, including an annual full-day Strategic Planning Retreat, Special General Meetings, the Past Presidents Dinner, the New Member Mingle, Holiday dinner and if necessary, any extraordinary meetings. Each Board Member is also assigned to one or two standing Board Commiees (Finance, Governance, Membership, Special Board Commiees) which generally meet monthly for an hour. Each Board Member will act as a Board Representative on one or two of the Activity Commiees (Bridge, Figure Skating, Hockey, Fitness, Swim Team, Badminton, Tennis, Squash, and Youth). Some Activity Commiees are busier than others and the role is mainly communicating information from the Board to the commiee and vice versa. Generally, a Board Director can expect to spend 6-10 hours/month on Board business, more if they chair a commiee. Board Role The Board focuses on results and outcomes defined by the Vision, Mission, and Value Statements rather than day-to-day operations and provides strategic oversight to the Club. To serve as an eective governance body with oversight of the Club and its Members, the Board plays four distinct roles.Direction Seing: Shaping the direction for the Club and leading, inspiring the Club in its pursuit of that vision. Strategic Planning: Ensuring the Club’s leadership resources and finances are in line with the vision. Strategic Monitoring and Evaluating: Monitoring the performance against the set direction and ensuring prompt corrective action when needed. Creating a Culture of Engagement: To build and maintain a high level of engagement with the Club and its Members. Chief Executive Oicer/General Manager Role The Board is responsible for one employee, the Chief Executive Oicer/General Manager. The Board and the CEO/GM operate in a collaborative environment towards achieving the vision and goals of the Club. The CEO/GM is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Club. All Board authority delegated to sta is through the CEO/GM; all authority and accountability of sta is the CEO/GM's. The Board sets the desired outcomes for the Club, and the CEO/GM is responsible for implementing the Board's direction.Onerous But Rewarding Board work is not easy. It can be challenging and requires time and eort. However, the eorts are devoted to the beerment of the Club, our home away from home. There is a great deal of camaraderie and Board Members oen form lifelong friendships. If you’d like more information, please feel free to reach out to a current Board Member by emailing Board@hollyburn.org.

THE VIEW | SPRING 202541FITNESSCombining Running and WeightliingStrenh training has proven to be highly beneficial for runners, improving speed, endurance, injury prevention, and helping to achieve body fat loss goals. Incorporating both weights and cardio into your routine is an eective strategy for enhancing performance.Whether you're aiming for weight loss, beer fitness, faster running times, or reduced injury risk, adding weightliing to your workout plan will deliver results. To build muscle, you need a structured plan that includes progressive overload. Start where you are, which may mean beginning with bodyweight exercises. This will teach you how to engage your core properly and execute movements correctly. Without these fundamentals, it’s diicult to progress, and you might not be targeting the right muscles due to improper technique. If you're new to liing or running, expect some soreness. But if you're so sore that you can't maintain proper form the next day or feel like you've run a marathon, you may have overdone it. The key is to focus on the minimum eective dose:• A lile soreness is normal, but excessive soreness means the intensity was too high. Reduce the eort next time.• Your workout doesn’t need to be long — even 20 minutes, 2 days a week (for either running or liing), can be eective.• During base building, 3 days a week of liing (up to 45 minutes) is ideal, while mileage is lower.• If you're liing heavily 4-5 days a week, you can still work up to 3-4 days of running if long-distance training is your goal. What Does "Heavy" Liing Mean?Muscular endurance is usually trained with 12-15 reps per set. Liing heavy means using a weight you can li for 4-8 reps. When liing heavy, longer rest periods between sets are essential for recovery and to maximize your liing capacity. Here’s how to approach heavy liing:• Start by determining your 1 rep max (the maximum weight you can li once with proper form).• Prioritize good form; if you can't maintain it, reduce the weight.• Begin with 3 sets of 4-8 reps for each exercise.• Over time, you can increase to 6 sets.• Rest for at least 2 minutes between sets — this rest period is based on muscle recovery science.Should You Run or Li First? It’s common to combine running and liing on the same day, especially for those running 5-6 days a week. Which workout you do first depends on your primary goal:• If you’re training for a race, start with the run.• If you’re focusing on muscle building, begin with the li.You’ll want to tackle the most important workout when you're freshest. Studies suggest that if you can do one workout in the morning and the other later in the day (with at least 6 hours in between), you'll maximize the benefits of both. If that’s not possible, make whatever time you have work.

Page 42

THE VIEW | SPRING 202542Should You Run on Days You Li Weights?Yes and no. Every training schedule is dierent. Some runners prefer to li and do speed workouts on the same day. This allows them to keep their easy run day truly easy or ensures their rest day is fully restorative. Should Runners Li Weights for Legs?Absolutely. Many runners mistakenly believe that because their legs are already working hard during runs, they don't need extra strenh training for them. In reality, liing legs helps prevent imbalances and injuries, even if it can make running feel more challenging post-workout.Timing is crucial here. Ideally, you want at least two days between a lower body liing session and a hard run (intervals or long distances). Some runners prefer liing on the same day as their speed sessions, doing one workout in the morning and the other in the evening. This maximizes muscle recruitment and ensures they can li heavy without compromising performance. In the end, whether you're running, swimming, playing tennis, or practicing pickleball, liing weights will increase your strenh, reduce your risk of injury, and ultimately improve your performance in any sport.Shelley Grisbrook Fitness Centre Manager

THE VIEW | SPRING 202552SK ATINGMetamorphosis This Spring, the skating at Hollyburn will change. It has been incubating and building energy. New young skaters have been emerging and working their skills. The whole program has been nourished with intentional coaching, technique, & consistent doses of care. Now, it’s time to fly! In skating, I oen remind people that the idea is really to fly. Figure skaters take flight in the air and challenge themselves to land perfectly on the blade. Hockey players take flight with their prolific speed as they deek in and out of the opposing team & score the goal. The ability to fly takes time to develop and rarely happens exactly when you think it will. But the process, just like for the caterpillar, is one where they must go through certain steps to create the ‘flight worthy’ buerfly. First, a skater learns to step onto the ice and get comfortable with the slippery surface. The unknown of ‘walking on frozen water’ in the new landscape of ice. It works dierently than land and must be respected to find their glide. Next, the skater expands their skating wiith speed, stopping, going backwards, and turning. This new frozen world becomes a playground of movement. Possibilities are endless & creation begins. At last, the skater finds their own personal movement style. Will they be the fastest in the game? Will they soar into jumps? Will they spin eortlessly? Will they guard the net? It’s all possible and now it comes down to preference. There is nothing quite as captivating as watching someone who has found their niche on the ice. When the skating buerfly is born, it has spent hundreds or even thousands of hours on the ice. Creating the muscle to move with. Developing the relationship with the ice itself. At Hollyburn, we see this amazing transformation all the time... Our ice access allows us to give young skaters so much to work with. They get to experience the beauty, the challenge, & the pride of becoming great skaters. I was asked many months ago if I was intentionally training champions here at the Club. Would I want their names on the wall... or would I sele for the recreation of the sport. My answer is yes. When training skaters, I only train them to their best ability – that is my intention. But the intended outcome is that they are more than just the best caterpillars. It’s that they develop their own wings... that they find their own inner strenh... and that, through the process outlined above, they learn to fly. Jadene Shannon Head of Skating

THE VIEW | SPRING 202554SQUASHBasic Rules & GameplayThe objective of the game is for players to take turns hiing the ball against the front wall, above the tin and below the out line. The ball may strike the side or back walls at any time, as long as it hits below the out line. A ball that lands on the out line, or the line along the top of the tin, is considered to be out. Aer the ball hits the front wall, it is allowed to bounce once on the floor (and any number of times against the side or back walls) before a player must return it. Players may move anywhere around the court but accidental or deliberate obstruction of the other player’s movements is forbidden. Players typically return to the center of the court aer making a shot. Each game is played to 11 points. The player who scores 11 points first wins the game except if the score reaches 10-all, the game continues until one player leads by two points. Either player may score points (PAR – point-a-rally). The server, on winning a rally, scores a point and retains the service; the receiver, on winning a rally, scores a point and becomes the server.Points are awarded if, during the course of play:• The receiver fails to strike the ball before it has bounced twice• The receiver hits the ball out (either on or above the out line, or on the tin) or misses the front wall• Interference resulting in a stroke, i.e. point to the obstructed playerSquash DoublesHardball Doubles Squash was invented in Philadelphia, PA in 1907 and was standardized in the early 1920s. Hardball doubles has been a fixture of Canadian Squash since the early 1930s. Five Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec) house all 45 courts in the country. The Canadian Doubles National Championships were first played in 1934 and, with the exception of 1938, have been played every year since then. Provincial Championships are held in four of the five provinces and over 1,100 players participate in Doubles Squash leagues across the country. It is estimated that there are over 4,000 hardball doubles players in Canada. Squash BC has an active and engaged doubles community.Junior Silver Series:The Junior Silver Series is a regionalized tournament series that allows players outside of the top of Squash BC’s provincial ranking system to compete, experience success, and continue to develop their skills. Silver Series events also represent an opportunity for those succeeding at the Squash Starters level to transition into a more competitive environment. Silver Series events are tournaments that can use a round-robin or straight-draw format (Note: Players are always guaranteed at least two matches). Players provincially ranked in the top eight of U15, U17 & U19 or the top four of U13 (as of the event registration deadline) are ineligible to participate in the Silver Series. Silver Series event divisions can use either single-dot (competition) or double-dot (pro) balls (at the discretion of the tournament director).

THE VIEW | SPRING 202560The Natural Li: Unlocking the Benefits of Cosmetic AcupunctureIn a world where beauty treatments oen come with a hey price tag and potential risks, cosmetic acupuncture oers a refreshing, natural alternative to invasive procedures. This holistic treatment, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, focuses on rejuvenating your skin and improving overall health—without the needles you might expect from a beauty procedure. At the heart of cosmetic acupuncture is a simple yet powerful technique: the insertion of ultra-fine needles into specific points on the face, neck, and sometimes the body. These carefully chosen acupuncture points stimulate the skin's natural processes to reduce fine lines, enhance tone, and restore elasticity. By creating tiny microtraumas in the skin, the body is encouraged to produce more collagen, resulting in smoother, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles over time. The benefits aren’t just cosmetic—cosmetic acupuncture also improves circulation, boosts lymphatic drainage to reduce puiness, and promotes a healthy, glowing complexion. But the advantages go beyond just appearance. This treatment is designed to address internal health issues, like stress and hormonal imbalances, that can manifest in your skin. Each session is a combination of facial acupuncture, body acupuncture, and sometimes additional therapies like gua sha or cupping. The result is not just a refreshed face but a balanced body, leading to a more radiant and youthful look. One of the most appealing aspects of cosmetic acupuncture is its non-invasive nature. With no chemicals, injections, or harsh procedures, it’s a gentle way to combat the signs of aging. While you may not see immediate results like Botox or fillers, cosmetic acupuncture delivers lasting, subtle improvements that promote long-term skin health.Ideal for those seeking a natural boost, cosmetic acupuncture can improve skin tone, texture, and elasticity, while also reducing puiness and dark circles. Over a series of treatments, your skin will feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and glowing—inside and out. Plus, regular sessions can leave you with a sense of calm and relaxation, as the therapy also addresses underlying stress. If you're looking for a non-invasive way to enhance your beauty routine while improving your overall well-being, cosmetic acupuncture might be the perfect treatment for you. With its combination of age-old techniques and modern skincare benefits, it’s a natural choice for those seeking a more youthful, balanced glow.WELLNESS

A: All swimmers will receive a level recommendation handout prior to the registration deadline each set. We ask that all participants bring past reports to any upcoming sessions so their instructors can continue to fill them out as your child progresses. Final report cards with feedback from the instructor will be handed out on the final day of class.

It is based on the concept of balancing the body’s energy pathways, or meridians, to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and improve overall health. Modern acupuncture is also supported by evidence showing its ability to stimulate the nervous system, release endorphins, and improve blood circulation. Laser Acupuncture *NEW*Laser acupuncture is a modern, non-invasive adaptation of traditional acupuncture that uses low-level laser beams instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points. This approach is particularly useful for individuals who are needle-averse or have sensitive skin. It provides similar therapeutic benefits, such as pain relief, inflammation reduction, and improved tissue healing, by enhancing cellular function and circulation through photobiomodulation. Cosmetic Acupuncture *NEW*Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial acupuncture, focuses on improving skin health and appearance by targeting acupuncture points on the face and body. This treatment stimulates blood flow, collagen production, and muscle tone, reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and puiness. It is a natural, holistic approach to rejuvenating the skin and promoting overall wellness without the use of chemicals or invasive procedures. Microneedling *NEW*Microneedling is a minimally invasive skincare treatment that involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating collagen and elastin production. It is widely used to improve skin texture, reduce scars, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation, and promote a more youthful, radiant complexion. Microneedling can also enhance the absorption of topical skincare products for improved results.

THE VIEW | SPRING 2025133Heated Cupping with Gua Sha *NEW*Heated cupping and Gua Sha are traditional Chinese medicine techniques oen used together to promote healing, relieve muscle tension, and improve circulation. In heated cupping, glass or silicone cups are warmed and placed on the skin to create suction, drawing blood flow to the area and releasing fascial restrictions. Gua Sha involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate microcirculation, break up adhesions, and reduce inflammation. Together, these therapies work synergistically to alleviate muscle pain, improve range of motion, and promote detoxification, leaving the body feeling relaxed and revitalized.
