2 | SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2025Dear friends of Summermusik,Welcome to this year’s musical adventure: Summermusik 2025!You will hear music composed over the span of over 400 years—from the Renaissance to the present, including several world premieres. I am excited to introduce you to orchestral music drawing inspiration from the Middle East and Asia. We are especially proud to welcome the legendary Kronos Quartet as our guests. Our opening weekend is a musical discovery of music along the legendary Silk Road, following in the footsteps of Marco Polo. Beginning with the multi-choral music of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, we will go on a journey to Israel, Turkey, Syria, Mongolia, and China. All composers bring together Western orchestral music with music from their roots in an ingenious way. The fantastic violinist Rachel Barton Pine will be the soloist in the concert world premiere of the violin concerto by Syrian American composer Malek Jandali. Another highlight will be acclaimed throat singer and ritual artist SoRIAH as he will present music inspired by Mongolia. Our second weekend is dedicated to musical trailblazers. The Grammy Award-winning Kronos Quartet has been one of the major musical forces in the world—and shaping the future of classical music—for over 50 years. Among the works they will perform is a Midwest premiere by Jungyoon Wie. We will also perform a world premiere by Matthew Browne, who is the winner of the inaugural Kreitler Commission Competition. We begin the weekend with “Gwely Mernans” by a pioneer in the electronic music landscape: Grammy Award-winning composer Richard David James, best known as Aphex Twin. Our third weekend celebrates the 100th anniversary of Art Deco. The sensational exhibition in Paris in 1925 inspired the focus of this concert: Music from the 1920s and 1930s. We begin in America with the iconic jazz standard “Take the A Train” by Billy Strayhorn, followed by John Alden Carpenter’s jazz pantomime “Krazy Kat.” You will hear the rarely performed original version of George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, performed by the brilliant Terrence Wilson on piano, and he also will be the soloist in Maurice Ravel’s stunningly beautiful piano concerto. Like Art Deco, Ottorino Respighi reimagined older traditions to great eect. His Gli Uccelli (The Birds) is a brilliant orchestral suite. Summermusik is proud to be part of a consortium that commissioned Marina López to compose “Moño.” With this work, she explores the music from the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Our final concert will be a toast to the rich tradition of Irish music. The sounds of the fiddle, tin whistle, and uilleann pipes evoke a world of nostalgia and celebration. After the delightful "Irish Suite" by Leroy Anderson, we will introduce you to one of Ireland's most significant figures in Irish music, Seán Ó Riada. John Williams’ mesmerizing music for Angela's Ashes captures life in Limerick. Our guests Liz Knowles (fiddle) and Kieran O’Hare (uilleann pipes and tin whistle) have appeared worldwide, and they will perform original and traditional music, like “Molly with the Ringlets,” “The Brendan Voyage” by Shaun Davey, “Mná na hÉireann” by Seán Ó Riada, and more. Riverdance brought Irish dancing and music to a global audience in the 1990s, making Celtic music more accessible and popular. We will pay tribute to Riverdance with a “Symphonic Suite.” I hope you will join us for four weekends of discovery and joyful music making!Eckart PreuMusic Director3 DIFFERENT CONCERT EXPERIENCESPhoto Credit: Phil Groshong

SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2025 | 15In ancient Greek mythology, Kronos (also Cronus or Cronos, but NOT Chronos) was the leader of the Titans, the divine descendants of the primordial Gaia (Mother Earth) and Uranus (Father Sky). Most of his family history is pretty gruesome and disgusting, but he was the father of Zeus. Who was the father of Apollo, who was the god of music (among other things). Which brings us to The Kronos Quartet. Founded in 1973, the Kronos Quartet has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the string quartet into a living art form that responds to the people and issues of our time. A champion of new music, Kronos has commissioned more than 1,100 works and arrangements for string quartet through its nonprofit Kronos Performing Arts Association.True to form, Kronos performs Jungyoon Wie's Starlings, a Summermusik co-commission with The Next Festival of Emerging Artists. Summermusik also presents a new work by 2024 Kreitler Competition winner Matt Browne. A first-of-its kind initiative, the competition is the brainchild of former Summermusik Board member John Henry Kreitler (1948-2024). Summermusik is partnering with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle (North Carolina) and the Reno and Pittsburgh Chamber Orchestras for this project, which is open to aspiring and seasoned orchestral composers worldwide.SATURDAY, AUGUST 9Prelude Talk: 6:45pm | SCPA Mayerson TheaterEckart Preu, conductor7:30 pm|SCPACorbettTheaterTRAILBLAZERSAPHEX TWIN, arr. SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2025 | 19ART DECO AT 100Let’s not associate the (19)20s with the darkness of prohibition, Black Friday, gangsters, or rising fascism on the other side of the pond, but with the beauty of the Harlem Renaissance, new musical styles like jazz and blues, fashion, artists like Josephine Baker, Bessie Smith, Tamara de Lempicka, the Comedian Harmonists, and the rise of cinema. The program connects the music of the pre-war era and the 1920s with works by France’s and Italy’s greatest living composers (at the time)—Ravel and Respighi, respectively—and works by emerging composers like Gershwin and Ellington. Named after the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris, Art Deco influenced fashion, jewelry, buildings, bridges, ocean liners, trains, furniture, and everyday objects including radios and vacuum cleaners. It flourished in the U.S. and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s until it was swallowed up by the evil that swept across Europe. And then there were the cars, like the 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom on the next page. Along with Duesenbergs, Packards, Pierce Arrows, and brands you may never have heard of, these were not mere ‘cars’, they were sleek, stylish moving artworks, with ornamental details that make today’s high-end cars look like bumper cars. So, if you like automobiles with hoods longer than any modern garage can hold—and haven’t done this yet—then take a trip to the Duesenberg-Auburn-Cord Museum in Auburn, Indiana.Approximately2hourswithintermission.Wineandnonalcoholicbeveragesavailableforpurchase.Prelude Talk: 6:45pm | SCPA Mayerson TheaterEckart Preu, conductor7:30pm|SCPACorbettTheaterSATURDAY, AUGUST 16ELLINGTON/STRAYHORN, arr. SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2025 | 23Prelude Talk: 3:15pm | SCPA Mayerson TheaterEckart Preu, conductor4:00pm|SCPACorbettTheaterSATURDAY, AUGUST 23THE SOUL OF IRELANDForget Columbus or the Vikings! The Irish were the first Europeans to make it to North America, or to be more precise, a certain Brendan of Clonfert (c. AD 484-577) aka Saint Brendan. Who cares if it actually happened! It makes for a darn good story—and some brilliant music by Shaun Davey, which is part of our exploration to answer the question: What defines the soul of Ireland? The beer drinkers among us will answer this with a resounding Guinness!, tourists will point to and kiss the Blarney Stone, Irish poet William Butler Yates claimed it was to be found in Irish poems and stories, and famed Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (he of Pygmalion fame) thought that the Emerald Isle was “like no other place under heaven, and no man [sic!] can touch its sod or breathe its air without becoming better or worse.” That about clears it up!But I digress. So what is the soul of Ireland? Is it the music (from Turlough O’Carolan to Ewan McColl to U2), the Hill of Tara, the Irish dance tradition, or the resilience of its people (the Gael) to thrive in the face of economic hardship, political oppression, and natural disasters? Who knows, but maybe you can discover the soul of Ireland somewhere in tonight's music.Slán!Approximately2hourswithintermission.Wineandnonalcoholicbeveragesavailableforpurchase.LEROY ANDERSON SelectionsfromIrishSuiteSEÁN Ó RIADA Overture OlynthiacJOHN WILLIAMS Theme from Angela’s AshesTRADITIONAL, arr.
