2THE BULLETIN SPRING 2025For over 75 years, the Ontario Federaon of School Athlec Associaons (OFSAA) has been at the forefront of high school athlecs, promong leadership, sportsmanship, and community engagement. OFSAA provides student-athletes with the opportunity to compete at a provincial level. At the same me, the schools and communies that host these events enjoy lasng and rewarding benets that go well beyond the nal game. In recent years, OFSAA has struggled to nd hosts for specic sports, pung a strain on experienced convenors who are asked to host annually. I want to highlight how hosng an OFSAA event can benet your school and community. One of the most immediate and rewarding aspects of hosng an OFSAA event is the enormous sense of pride it creates. When students rally behind their teams, sta lead in planning roles, and alumni return to help, school spirit thrives. Bringing together families, coaches, and students from across Ontario oers host communies and schools an opportunity to showcase their spirit, hospitality, and pride. The boost to the local economy is oen an overlooked advantage. Communies see a notable increase in visitors from teams traveling across Ontario. Local businesses see increased sales, restaurants become busier, and hotels ll up. Hosng OFSAA may be one of the year’s most signicant occasions for many smaller towns. The host associaon also benets from an addional entry in the fesval or championship, allowing local teams to compete at the provincial level, even if they did not qualify through the Associaon Championships. This incenve appeals to programs or areas with a strong tradion in a parcular sport. Aending an OFSAA event presents a fantasc opportunity to gain experience, build condence, and pave the way for future success. We always remind our convenors that the primary goal of hosng an OFSAA event isn’t to turn a prot. Instead, the focus should be on delivering a high-quality experience while meeng budget constraints. OFSAA has sponsorship agreements with equipment providers for many sports, allowing the host school to retain equipment as part of the event’s legacy. In some cases, equipment upgrades can be incorporated into the event budget, although we generally expect that many essenals are already in place. With community sponsor support, some events can even oset costs and provide addional assistance to their school’s athlec program. Hosng an OFSAA event is about more than just the compeon—it’s a chance to showcase what makes your school and community unique, build connecons, and develop a sense of pride that remains long aer the event concludes. So, the next me the opportunity arises, don’t hesitate. Because when your community hosts OFSAA, everyone wins.If you are interested in hosng but don’t know where to start, the OFSAA convenor manual on our website is a great resource for prospecve hosts. Please see page ve of this magazine for a lisng of available hosng opportunies. Alternavely, feel free to contact me at erik@ofsaa.on.ca with any quesons. 9OFSAA NEWSTHE IMPRINT OF OFSAA TRY DAY!OFSAA is able to provide students with opportunies to live an acve, healthy lifestyle thanks to funding provided by the Government of OntarioNous pouvons fournir aux étudiants des occasions de vivre un style de vie sain grace au nancement du Gouvernement de l’Ontario20252025EDUCATION THROUGH SCHOOL SPORT LE SPORT SCOLAIRE : UN ENTRAîNEMENT POUR LA VIEA ‘TRY DAY’ SCHOOL • UNE ÉCOLE DE ‘TRY DAY’ LEADERSHIP NEW ACTIVITIES FUN FOR ALLAs a former student from Mackenzie Community School in Deep River (EOSSAA), I was one of the student leaders who introduced cricket to our school as part of OFSAA Try Day in 2022. Now three years later, I wanted to share how impacul that opportunity was for me and my peers, and express how grateful I am for the funding OFSAA was able to provide. As MCS is a small rural school, extra funding, new equipment, and excing learning opportunies are not always easy to come by. When applying for Try Day in 2022, cricket was recommended, and though I had never played the sport, we decided to give it a go. With minimal knowledge and a few peers who were familiar with cricket, we were able to successfully introduce the sport to over 200 students throughout the day. I was thankful for the opportunity to try my hand at a new sport, as well as to see so many other students learning, laughing, and nding new skills. The part of this day that truly resonates with me to this day was the joy of students who had a love for cricket being able to share the sport with their friends, when a former lack of equipment prevented them from doing so. It makes me incredibly happy to see this equipment sll being used in gym classes at MCS, and the dedicaon from teachers to learn how to teach cricket to their students. I’d say that cricket equipment went a long way in promong the sport! This day was very special to me back in 2022, but it is even more special to me now today. I had the incredible opportunity to parcipate in the very rst OCR (Ontario College Recreaon) women’s cricket tournament as a member of Cambrian College’s team (Sudbury). When I saw that the college was hosng tryouts for the team, I instantly knew I wanted to join. I had never played a proper match before, but the joy I had playing in high school was sll there, and I was so excited to play again. I learned as much as I could within the week, and successfully made the team. My teammates were shocked to hear that the extent of my cricket experience was that one OFSAA Try Day, but it was the happiness I felt playing the game that made me show up, far beyond the skill I had. Our team managed to reach the nals of the tournament, and success was seen from every college, with it looking like women’s cricket will be scking around for OCR.I play on three varsity teams at Cambrian - soccer, badminton, and cross-country running - but I’m being completely honest when I say that cricket has become my favourite by far. Without the funding from OFSAA Try Day and the opportunity to introduce cricket to our school, I’d have never considered playing college cricket. But just that one day of enjoying myself in learning a new sport and sharing it with others was enough to keep me engaged and wanng more. I am so incredibly thankful for the support of OFSAA, both for the funding that gave me my start in cricket, but also for the compeon I was able to parcipate in all other sports, that also led me to a successful three-sport college career. If I didn’t realize how impacul introducing new and non- tradional sports to youth was back in 2022, I absolutely do now today. I just wanted to let everyone know how unique and important the OFSAA Try Day program is, and how appreciave I am of its success. Thank you for giving me and so many others opportunity to excel in places we never thought we’d be. Jamie Hopkins Vice President, Cambrian Student Council
