I’ve seen evidence of cougars, between their chilling screams at night and footprints near the remains of a deer carcass on our property, but this may only add to their mystique. I originally created this art for Protect American River Canyons’ (PARC) annual Conuence Festival in Auburn. This powerful and vital apex species’ existence remains precarious in our human world, ironically making its continued survival ultimately fragile. In 2025, I’ve re-drawn the lion to appear on some of Auburn Transit’s vehicles. My most fullling work is helping PARC preserve our local canyons and rivers.”River Lion by Laurel MatheTaste of the Tour Preview Show is the ocial launch of the 2025 Placer Artists Tour, showcasing one piece from every tour artist, gallery & school.

Deanna Marsh is an Auburn based metal sculptor and kiln-formed glass artist who has art installations across the globe. She got her start in 2006 when Placer Artist Tour was in its infancy as Auburn Art Studio Tour. Her work can now be seen in hospitals, commercial buildings and public spaces worldwide. Her newest large scale work will soon grace the facade of a 14-story UC Davis Health California Tower Hospital building in Sacramento. Here is what she has to say about her experience with the Tour and how it has helped her develop her successful career in the arts. When did you rst become involved with what is now Placer Artists Tour? (Formerly AAST)My rst Tour was in 2006. The previous spring I started the Loomis Art Loop with a group of ten artists. That experience got me excited about interacting with the public to sell my sculptures, so I applied for the fall Tour. How do you think the Tour helped you in your career and development?I believe the Tour played a signicant role in my career development. In the early stages, my interactions with Placer County’s art community and organizations were crucial. For nearly a decade, my studio at OLAS (Old Library Art Studio) in downtown Auburn, which I shared with four other artists, became a vibrant center for art shows and the AAST. The direct interactions with clients during the Tour, discussing commissions and my artwork, helped me rene my artistic voice and vision. Each Tour led to commission opportunities, expanding my client base and providing projects to work on afterward. Now, my sculptural practice encompasses over two decades of both commercial and public art projects. What was your favorite part of being on The Tour?My favorite part of being on the Tour was the energy and camaraderie during the setup at OLAS. Each morning, we’d start with coee and breakfast, and at the end of the day, we’d share our favorite conversations and encounters with visitors. We often connected clients with each other, and the Tour days always felt lively with the crowds we drew. What do you see as your biggest accomplishment in your art career?I see my most recent glass facade project for the 14-story UC Davis Health Tower in Sacramento as a major accomplishment. It was a three-year undertaking, and the entire project, from design to construction, will span ten years, with a public opening in 2031. The concept for the glass design beautifully integrates many of the Deanna MarshBeyond the Tour:“Tapestry of Life: The Warp and Weft of Care” 2018A hybridized digital image of medical gauze, enlarged to monolithic scale, turns an everyday material of hospital usage into a metal and glass tapestry for the two-story lobby entry. UCDH commissioned California artist DeannaMarsh, who has drawn inspiration from the Sacramento regionto colorfully express its conuence of places and peoples. Theprinted and fused glass hinge art on the east façade echoes thecolor palettes, patterns, and variety of the abundant surrounding land, plants and creatures that grow alongside us.9 Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsPlacerArtistsTour.org“What do you uniquely want to ‘say’ and share with the world? Yourvision and voice aren’t static, but evolving and growing, needing cultivation and refinement – this is the work of a lifetime.”themes I’ve explored in my work over the past two decades. The project challenged me both artistically and technically, requiring me to learn a new commercial process for creating large-scale fused glass. The budget enabled me to reach for the sky and really stretch my creativeimagination.Where do you draw inspiration? My inspiration has always been rooted in my understanding of the geology, biology, and native landscape of the Sierra foothills. The American River Canyon and the indigenous ora and fauna are a constant source of ideas. My sculptures are born from a deep love for this place I call home. How did you make the leap into large scale commercial projects?Art consultants began to approach me from exposure on the Tour and through the Tour catalog and websites. My computer skills helped me create renderings of my sculptural concepts for their clients to visualize in their architectural space. Now, I work seamlessly with art consultants, architects and engineering teams in the planning or construction phase of new projects. Being engaged from the onset of a new space, ensures the right infrastructure has been engineered to safely support my artwork. My sculptures are environmentally sustainable and often 4-LEED-certied and Living Building qualied, and meet OSHPOD and stringent health and safety requirements for public spaces. Project by project I’ve learned how to scale up my ideas and manage the technical elements of installations, and the details of bidding and budgets. What advice would you give to new artists? Work hard developing your visual voice and technical expertise with your medium. What do you uniquely want to “say” and share with the world? Your vision and voice aren’t static, but evolving and growing, needing cultivation and renement – this is the work of a lifetime. Be alert to opportunities that may be out of your comfort zone. Make art. Make art. Make art! What’s next for you?In the works is developing the new Hwy. 49 roundabout sculp-ture near downtown Auburn. As well, I’m taking time to develop new outdoor sculptures for a pond on my property and refreshing my studio with better lighting, equipment, and bigger storage...investing in myself to replenishmy creativity feels very nourishing. deannamarshstudio.com

She is always available and puts in 100%+. Not only does she volunteer for the Placer Artist Tour, but she is also an active member and treasurer of Rocklin Fine Arts.Throughout her 7 years as an artist on the Tour, Susie has served as a Regional Leader and Lead for the Potluck and Taste of the Tour. She has an “eagle eye” for proong the Guide, a huge task. All additional Regional Leaders look to Susie for advice, mentoring and communications. She truly loves connecting and supporting artists and is always available. “As with all aspects of life, experience is impacted by our own interpretations. Through my art, I paint my interpretations of owers, landscapes, objects, and moments of life. I began with watercolor and acrylic painting classes and most recently have developed a new passion for alcohol inks. I am most drawn to these mediums because each oers its own advantage. I enjoy how the watercolors move on paper. It is with the movement of the watercolor, the instant gratication of acrylics, and the vibrancy of alcohol inks that my interpretations are best expressed for viewers to enjoy the experience with me.”“I have always been a ‘Jacqueline of all things’ (my take on Jack of all trades). Beyond the Tour:Belen SawyerBelen Sawyer is a Roseville based photographer. She has won many awards in several regional shows and has her work in several local galleries. Originally a Tour goer, she took the leap to join the Tour as an artist in 2021. Her latest achievement, having her photography placed throughout the new La Quinta Hotel, was made possible in large part due to her participation on the Placer Artist Tour. Tell us about your experience with Placer Artist Tour...I have been attending the art Tour since 1998 with the goal of someday being a part of it. I just loved having access to the art and the artists in their studios and other locations! It wasn’t until more than 20 years later that I would begin showing my photography. I was invited to apply for the tour and I decided to go for it! It was very organized and there were so many wonderful people guiding the group and available to help with whatever I felt I needed.It took some real focus to put it all together for the rst time, but I had great sup-port from my family and friends. The leadership for the tour really wanted us all to do well and with the Taste of the Tour, the publications and many other means of promotion, they were all an integral part of why it was a success. I and my photography ended up in publications I didn’t even know about! It was exciting!How did you end up having your art at La Quinta Hotel?I was part of the Placer Artists Tour in 2021 and had my booth outside the Art League of Lincoln. A woman came in, walked to the back wall with her arms out and said ‘This! This is what I want!’ ‘All of this!’ ‘I want these in my hotel.’ She told me she was planning to build a hotel in Lincoln. Then three years later she reached out to me. The Hotel opened this year and features my photography throughout the hotel. The owner wanted to have images of thelocal region so guests could feel that the Hotel was connected with the area and community. Each of the 104 rooms have several of my photos. There is a gallery wall in the lobby with more images as well as many others throughout the hotel.“I was part of the Placer Artists Tour in 2021 and had my booth outside the Art League of Lincoln. It makes me so happy to go there and look at the beauty you have captured on lm. Love, Love, Love it!!!!” - Owner of La Quinta HotelHow do you think the Tour helped you in your career and development?Being a part of the tour and having a successful show, motivated me to continue to develop my skills and my business. I’ve had so many opportunities since I was on the tour. My connection with the art tour led to me being accepted as an artist in the community and at Persimmon Gallery as well. If I ever have a question about something business related, I have so many wonderful friends and colleagues now that are happy to help! What advice would you give to new artists? The advice I’d give to artists just starting out would be to follow their passion, don’t feel shy about putting yourself and your art out there! Get involved with some of the many Art groups in our area and get into their shows, take classes, register on the ACPC directory etc…Go to the art tours, volunteer when you can, meet the artists, they’re all so friendly and are happy to share their stories with you. Our region is rich with art appreciators, talent-ed artists, great galleries and wonderful groups to support them! I would denitely suggest that when they feel ready, to participate in the Placer Artists Tour as they will have so much assistance and exposure and that experience will bring an endless amount of opportunities to get involved and promote their art!Creating Harmony through Art & Music9/25 New Artists Showcase • 5-7pm Hotel Vista Sierra Woodwind Trio10/18 Taste of the Tour • 5-7pm Blue Line Arts Woodwind Trio 11/8 Tour Gallery Location • 1-3pm General Gomez Arts Woodwind Trio11/9 Tour Gallery Location • 1-3pm For the Love of Art Gallery String Trio1/15 Tour Gallery Location • 1-3pm Persimmon Gallery String Duo“We’ve experienced and loved the juxtaposition of music and art in our beloved Sierra foothillsfor almost 30 years!” – STEPHANIE & BOB SNYDER2025 PLACER ARTISTS TOUR MUSICAuburnSymphony.com • 530.823.6683AuburnSymphonyOffice@gmail.comAuburnCivicSymphony AuburnSymphonybelen-sawyer.pixels.com

Together, we create a magical evening at Symphony & Art in the Park, held at the School Park Preserve, Auburn, in the month September, weaving together a beautiful integration of the visual and performing arts. Patrons enjoy strolling through live art exhibits, meeting and chatting with artists, while hearing the strains of classical music in a sweet, historic park in the heart of Auburn. It is a great family event - and it’s FREE to all! We also work together to choose local artist’s work to represent our concerts and events all season,promoting beautiful artwork that is created in our midst. We recognize our donors in joint gratitude celebrations, bringing together community members who are able to sup-port this special gift economy, ensuring there will be access to the arts for everyone in Auburn for years to come. Look for Auburn Symphony musicians at dierent locations each day of the Tour; we’d love to have you stop by and listen up close to these incredibly talented musicians.”AuburnCivicSymphony AuburnSymphony

What’s New?Pat MartinBy Trisa SwerdlowAfter spending 46 years in radio, Pat Martin knew that he was basically showcasing other people’s art…specically, their music. For him, every song is like a painting, a work of art. So now, he loves being able to create his own “little songs”... Art he can call his own. With the Placer Artists Tour, he is happy to have found a group of artists who realize that being supportive of other people helps everyone, and makes everyone more interested in art. It’s not a competition, it’s just art...and he is so pleased to be a new member of a wonderful art community.Pat originally heard about the Tour through a mutual friend of Kelly Peterson, Tour Program Director. He rst heard about the tour creating a piece for “Outside the Box: Reimagined”, a Placer Artists Tour fundraiser, and now the Tour, which he is very excited about. He says, “It’s not necessarily that I want people to see my work, which of course I do, but I wanted to be part of a community of like-minded individuals. I’ve been visiting a few artists on the Tour for a few years, and now it’s great to actually be a part of it.”When asked how he made the transition from well known radio personality to full time artist he says, “The transition was pretty smooth. I’d been tinkering with painting for 3 or 4 years before retiring, so when that happened, I was already set up and had the time to really dig in. In terms of people and social groups, I nd that radio people are much like artists. They tend to be kind of quirky and creative. They can be ‘mists’ in a way, a good way, and artists are very similar…just in a dierent way.”With a few exceptions, his style is generally geometric abstract, and is mostly black and white contrast, with some color incorporated, occasionally. He prefers to use acrylic paints on wood panels. He paints on smaller panels, 12”x16”, all the way up to 48”x60” panels. The smaller pieces tend to be studies for larger pieces. One of the paints he uses is Stuart Semple Black 3.0…which claims to be the blackest paint in the world. The result is a very striking contrast. He states that his style evolved by simply doing it. He is inspired by a wide variety of things he nds interesting. He loves geometric shapes and patterns, and when he sees a work of art that intrigues him, he uses that inspiration to create something with his own unique spin on it. The goal is to make it his own. Pat has long been fascinated with mid-century architecture and design, especially that of Frank Lloyd Wright. He loves the way Wright used linear lines to create functional forms and shapes. We’re all familiar with the buildings and homes he designed, the architecture side of him, but he was also an amazing artist. Pat is also inuenced by ancient cultural works of art and patterns, such of that by the Egyptians, the Mayans, the Africans, Middle Eastern art, and even that of the Alaskans and Hawaiians. But he does not always take inspiration from other artists, he gets inspiration from almost everything around him, whatever catches his eye. When asked how his art expresses his own voice, Pat says, “I made the analogy earlier between music and painting. Just as a song has basic components, like drums, bass, guitar, and lyrics, I think of my work as songs. Just as one would enjoy a song for any number of reasons, I hope my paintings are interpreted the same way. Don Henley of The Eagles has been asked the meaning behind ‘Hotel California’ for decades, and he’ll usually answer with ‘it means anything you want it to’. That’s what I hope my paintings elicit. I try to tell a story, one in which the viewer conjures up a narrative within their own imagination and interpretation.” Pat hopes to spend more of his time making art in the future. They say that to be really good at something, you have to put in 10,000 hours. He would like to get to that number…and more. He says he is working on it.Pat’s work can now be seen at High Hand Gallery in Loomis.“...every song is like a painting, a work of art. So now, he loves being able to create his own ‘lile songs’.”33 Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsPlacerArtistsTour.orgpatmartinart.com

This year, we reimagined the concept by challenging artists to incorporate recycled building materials into their work in a way that creatively expressed a vision of sustainability.Seventy-ve local artists rose to the occasion, and the resulting pieces were nothing short of extraordinary. From thought-provoking sculptures to beautifully reworked functional art, the variety and originality on display amazed all who attended the fundraiser. The event featured both silent and live auctions to raise funds in support of the Placer Artists Tour, while also promoting the arts in our community. Thanks to the artists, attendees, volunteers and sponsors, the evening was a tremendous success. We’re already looking ahead to next year—mark your calendar for April 9, 2026, once again at the Blue Goose. You won’t want to miss it!
