BOISEMETROCHAMBER.ORGCURIOUS ABOUT BUSINESS AFTER HOURS? SCAN TO WATCH AN AWESOME IG REEL MADE BY KENDALL FORD OF MERIDIAN!Dear Readers,As the 68th legislative session concludes, we extend our gratitude to both the House and Senate for their dedication and service to our state. One of the Chamber’s key advocacy priorities is advancing tax policy and economic development tools that create a business-friendly environment while supporting a vibrant, livable community for working families. House Bill 40 represents a step in this direction, delivering the largest income tax reduction in state history. This legislation lowers corporate and individual tax rates from 5.695% to 5.3% and expands the income tax exemption to include military pensions, enhancing Idaho’s tax climate for veterans.Additionally, we remain strong supporters of the Idaho Launch program and are pleased to see funding secured for this vital workforce development initiative. This investment will provide more Idahoans with access to training and education opportunities that align with the needs of our growing economy. On the federal level, we commend the U.S. Department of Treasury for issuing an interim final rule eliminating the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting requirement under the Corporate Transparency Act for U.S. businesses. This decision alleviates a regulatory burden on small businesses. We especially appreciate the leadership of Idaho’s Secretary of State, Phil McGrane, and other advocates who worked diligently to achieve this outcome. We look forward to continuing our work on behalf of Idaho’s business community and ensuring a strong future for our state!Stay Well, Tori Thomas Community and Government Affairs Manager, Boise Metro ChamberAs always, to bring something to the Chamber’s attention, or ask a question feel free to reach out at: tthomas@boisechamber.org Watch for announcements in our eNews and socials to learn about upcoming episodes of our Metro Minute podcast (presented by Hawley Troxell) where I explore federal, state, and local issues with elected officials and other experts!Stay up-to-date on our city and state's government affairsFEB-MARCH, 2025PHOTO CORNERShoutout to Kendall Ford of Meridian and our amazing team of Ambassadors who showed up in support for February’s Business After Hours! and Trade Show!Thank you to the 90+ Chamber members who came to show support, ride the mountain, and network at the Annual Boise Metro Chamber Day at Bogus Basin on February 6! METRO CONNECTION - MAY/JUNE 20253BOISE METRO CHAMBER'S FEATURED100-YEAR MEMBER (SINCE 1914)Our region has been benefiting from Veolia Water Company's leadership and commitment for over a century! As Idaho’s largest water utility provider and the 2nd largest environmental services company in the world, Veolia Water Company plays a critical role in supporting the state’s residents, businesses, and environment. We’re proud to honor and thank Veolia for their partnership with the Boise Metro Chamber since 1914! To celebrate, we've released the latest video in our 100-Year Chamber Member campaign featuring them! Scan the QR code to watch David Johns, Veolia Regional President, Idaho, share how Veolia manages an essential part of Idaho’s infrastructure, ensures reliable access to clean, safe water for generations; and values their 110+ year partnership with the Boise Metro Chamber.RAY STARK AND THE CHAMBER'S 140 YEAR LEGACYBY AMBER HAWTON-HILL, SENIOR MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGERI recently had the fortune of chatting with Ray Stark. If you’ve not yet met him, Ray is a retired, 30-year employee of the Boise Metro Chamber, a Hall of Fame recipient, government affairs advocate, and knower-of-all-things-Boise. During his career, he led the following impressive community contributions (and more):• Launching the Chamber’s first Regional Leadership Conference and Mayor’s State of the City Address• Helping lower Idaho’s corporate income tax• Advocating for the widening of I-84• Supporting the startup of the CWI• Securing bonds for Boise & West Ada School Dists• Building classrooms for Boise State University• Funding improvements for ACHD You’d agree—he’s kind of a big deal, right!? So, when Ray took the time to compliment the quality of our recent events, branding, and marketing, I started to feel like a bit of a big deal myself! I was quickly humbled by a powerful realization: all of our current efforts are only possible because of people and organizations who contributed to building the Chamber’s legacy over the past 140 years.I reflected on being part of an interconnected network—former staff (like Ray), Chamber leadership, community partners, sponsors, and incredible members—stretching back to the Chamber’s founding in 1885. I envisioned generations of collaborators who volunteered, sponsored, educated, led, dreamed, persisted, and advocated for a shared mission. The gravity of simultaneously being part of the legacy that came before, the team shaping the present, and the foundation for what’s to come was profound. This experience—along with the research and interviews behind our 100-Year Chamber Members campaign (see Veolia above)— sparked a joyful curiosity. I wanted to learn more. Each fact launched a cycle of exponential questions, a subsequent quest for clarity, and a flurry of research. There is no apparent end in sight—and that feels exciting!Throughout this discovery process, I’ve been consistently surprised and delighted to learn how much of the Treasure Valley’s infrastructure is the fruit of strategic plans made by the Chamber and its partners. This seems to confirm a bold claim from the 1919 Boise Commercial Club’s promotional booklet, Boise, which states: “Every good work finds behind it Boise’s Commercial Club. Its widening circles of influence extend in every direction.” I hope the article on the opposite page (inspired by Ray) offers you some fun facts and cocktail-party icebreakers—and more importantly, honors the many hands who’ve helped shape and continue to strengthen this incredible community through the Boise Metro Chamber. The information was compiled from interviews, archives, historic Chamber pamphlets/books, and a few Boise history enthusiasts. It is accurate to the best of my knowledge. I’d love to hear from you! BOISEMETROCHAMBER.ORG1234561885 — BOISE’S FIRST CHAMBER TAKES SHAPE Civic leaders in Boise banded together to form the city’s first Chamber of Commerce in 1885. Their goal was simple but ambitious: to organize local businesses and citizens to help the city grow. These early efforts helped guide Boise through its transition from a modest trading post to a future state capital. James A. Pinney, who owned the city’s first theater, served as president, while Nathan Falk (think Oppenheimer Companies), a merchant and community leader, played a major role in education and business development.1906 — THE COMMERCIAL CLUB ERA BEGINS The Chamber re-branded as the Boise Commercial Club around 1906 and a fourth floor was added to the Boise City National Bank building (805 West Idaho) specifically for the club, built by John Tourtellotte & Company. The stylish clubhouse catered to the Club’s growing membership with the following amenities: a billiards parlor, cardroom, dining district, lounge, library and writing room. The Club became a hub for networking, civic leadership, and regional promotion. It focused on attracting business investment and distributing materials highlighting Boise’s climate, water systems, commercial opportunities, and our pears which were apparently AMAZING! J.R. Simplot Company later took over the building, and today the fourth floor is home to Chamber member Harris’ Center of Influence! Ironically, the Boise Metro Chamber, Visit Boise, and Boise Valley Economic Partnership (BVEP) staff attended a training at the center, on the fourth floor in early April! (This will be a fun easter egg for Chamber staff to read!)1911 — FIRST FLIGHT IN IDAHO’S SKIES In 1911, aviation was still a novelty, yet Boise set its sights high—literally. The Boise Commercial Club quickly raised $8,000 to bring daredevil pilots Walter Brookins and Eugene Ely to town. Brookins braved the winds and soared above an awestruck crowd, marking Idaho’s very first powered flight. The event put Boise on the map as a forward-thinking city willing to take bold leaps—especially when the Chamber was behind the scenes. Later, in 1927, the Chamber would be instrumental in bringing airmail service to the region, building the Boise Airport, and creating United Airlines!1913 - ADVERTISING TO THE NATIONA notable contribution of the Boise Commercial Club was producing and distributing promotional materials to attract businesses and “Homeseekers” to Boise. An excerpt from a 1913 publication simply titled, Boise, poetically waxes, “The chance to invest your money, or your brains, or the strength of your hands to best advantage, and to live under conditions most favorable for health and happiness: that, in a word, Boise offers.”1922 — BOISE’S VOICE HITS THE AIRWAVES By 1919, the club reverted to its original name, the Boise Chamber of Commerce, adopting the motto “Building a Better Boise,” reflecting its enduring commitment to community development. In 1922, the Chamber helped launch and fund Idaho’s first licensed radio station (KFAU) in 1922. Students at Boise High School managed programming during the day, while the Chamber broadcasted local content at night. The initiative demonstrated an early understanding of how technology could be used for civic engagement, education, and storytelling.1925 — RAIL ARRIVES; CONNECTS BOISE TO U.S. The long-awaited Union Pacific Depot opened in 1925, thanks to years of Chamber negotiation and community fundraising. For the first time, Boise was connected directly to the national rail system—not just by a branch line from Nampa. The depot’s elegant design and grand opening celebration represented Boise’s confidence in its future. U.S. Senator Mike Crapo was the featured speaker, addressing an engaged audience of Chamber members, business leaders, and community stakeholders. The event was presented by Meta. Senator Crapo, who serves as the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, gave an in-depth update on the reconciliation process in Congress and efforts to extend key provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which are set to expire. He emphasized the potential economic impact of allowing these tax cuts to lapse, particularly for middle- and lower-income Americans and small businesses. Crapo also discussed proposed enhancements to the Child Tax Credit, small business tax relief, and bipartisan support for housing and energy initiatives. Questions from the audience addressed Medicaid reform, the CHIPS Act, wildfire preparedness, and support for alternative and nuclear energy. Crapo reiterated his commitment to protecting essential services and promoting smart reforms without cutting critical benefits. We thank our presenting sponsor, Meta, and and our co-sponsors, Bloom and Intermountain Gas Company, for their ongoing community investment. We hope events like these can strengthen dialogue between the business community and elected leaders on issues that shape Idaho’s future.Wells Fargo has had a long history in Idaho, establishing its first office in Boise in 1865, during the region’s gold rush.
