For those new to the Hunter ring, or anyone who wants to polish their presentation, understanding whatjudges look for is key to success. At its heart, Hunter judging celebrates the beauty of tradition: theelegance of the horse, the correctness of the round, and the harmony between horse and rider.Presentation CountsBefore you even step into the ring, the judge takes in your overall appearance. First impressions matter.Polished boots, a well-fitted jacket, clean tack and gloves all contribute to a sharp look. Properly fittedtack in clean, conservative colors (nothing flashy) shows respect for the tradition of the discipline. Clean, well groomed horses are non-negotiable. Manes should be neatly pulled or braided, coats gleaming, andhooves polished. A tidy tail and clean face go a long way.Hunter rounds are won in the details. Quiet hands, relaxed posture, and aconfident, soft ride all reflect the work that’s been done at home.As judge Geoff Teall has noted, “We want athleticism with beauty, effort with relaxation, and brilliance with control”.Judges look for:A consistent, rhythmic canterFluid, effortless jumping style with even distances to each jumpStraight approaches, smooth lead changes, use of the whole ringIn Hunter classes, less is more, think quiet and seamlessTricia Booker, an R-rated judge with over 30 years of experience, explains:“Jumping style and faults are vitally important to a successful show hunter. A well-balanced horse withsuperb jumping style—one with a tight and efficient front end and straight, strong push off the ground—will be much safer to ride over fences even if the rider makes a mistake. A horse that hangs or splits itsfront legs, is slow off the ground, or trails the hind end will be more likely to rub a fence, knock down arail, or even fall over a fence.”Judges also evaluate how the horse moves between jumps:You want a horse that has a long, low, ground-covering stride that’s going to cover the most distance withthe least effort. A well-behaved, pleasant horse is more desirable than one that's strong, lazy, grumpy, orspooky. The Chagrin Hunter Jumper Classic is proud to uphold the tradition of excellence and horsemanship thatthis sport was built on. We extend our thanks to all of the riders, trainers, and grooms who put in the hardwork and heart to present their horses beautifully, both inside and outside the ring. We wish all of ourexhibitors the best of luck and thank you for making the Chagrin Hunter Jumper Classic a place wheretradition and history continues to shine.Quotes adapted from the book “Judging Hunters & Equitation” by Tricia Booker and Julie Winkel, and from “From The Judge's Box: HuntersWith Geoff Teall” (Chronicle of the Horse). What Judges Look for in the Hunter RingPresented by the Chagrin Hunter Jumper Classic
