Join us in protecting birds and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.Environment for the AmericasWORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY: EFTA launched in 2008 to serve as the home of this global celebration of birds, with a focus on their migrations in the Americas. Since then, we have developed connections across borders and now support over 800 programs and events from Canada to Argentina and the Caribbean. Our collaborations extend around the world, and working in partnership with the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species, the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement, and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership, our work touches almost every yway. INTERNSHIPS: Since 2010, EFTA has developed skill-building experiences for early career professionals. In partnership with federal and other non-prot organizations, we provide meaningful opportunities that may lead to careers in conservation, research, science communications, and more. Today, we guide and mentor as many as 200 participants each year who work on national forests, at national parks, and on other public lands. RESEARCH: We are dedicated to protecting migratory species and are striving to uncover some of the threats that impact long-distance travellers. EFTA facilitates the Western Hummingbird Partnership, which focuses on helping western migratory hummingbirds thrive. We are also learning how to better use technology to explore wildlife movements. In addition to our focus on migratory birds, we are also working to track the Monarch buttery’s migratory journey from Texas to Minnesota.EDUCATION & OUTREACH: Every year we create new education materials, oer virtual and in-person trainings and workshops, and present our work at conferences, meetings, and public events. Our monthly Bird Book Club shares the writings of authors who are passionate about birds, conservation, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Locally and virtually, our programs connect people to birds through festivals, events, and other community programs. Help support our work across the Americas. 3migratorybirdday.orgWorld Migratory Bird DayWorld Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) celebrates and brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events around the globe, bird migration. Environment for the Americas coordinates WMBD across the Americas, and it is celebrated in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean at protected areas, refuges, parks, museums, schools, zoos, and more. More than 800 events and programs hosted annually introduce the public to migratory birds and ways to conserve them.Shared Spaces: Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and CommunitiesMore than half of the people in the world live in cities, and that number is expected to double in the next 25 years. As cities grow, migratory birds face increasing challenges. Native habitats are disappearing, noise and light pollution are increasing, anddomestic pets disturb and prey on birds. We can all help protect migratory birds. Whether they’re nesting, resting, or stopping to refuel during their journeys, there are ways to make a dierence. This year, World Migratory Bird Day focuses on protecting birds through bird-friendly actions that can be adopted at home, in communities, and in our largest cities. These include education, sustainable land stewardship, mindful consumer choices, and active community engagement.By creating and protecting shared spaces with wildlife, we can support birds on their long journeys and make our homes, neighborhoods, and cities more beautiful and healthier. What is “bird-friendly”?“Bird-friendly” means making our environment safe and welcoming for birds. We can do this by planting native plants, providing clean water, and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals. By creating and protecting shared spaces, we can help birds on their long journeys and make our communities more beautiful and healthy.Learn ways to make your community or city bird-friendly. Our series of webinars provide the science behind the challenge, examples of what other cities and communities have done to become more bird-friendly, and practical solutions that you can implement at home and in your neighborhood. All sessions will include English/Spanish translation. Register for our webinars: https://www.migratorybirdday.org/resources/2025-wmbd-webinars/Sign up at migratorybirdday.org/resources Sessions will take place on the third Thursday of the month at 2 pm Eastern throughout the year. Some of our upcoming sessions include:March: Shade the Coee, Shelter the Birds: Meet with the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center’s Bird Friendly team to learn about certified coffees and with a grower from Honduras to explore how bird-friendly crops benefit their community.April: A Pane in the Glass: Collisions are one of the biggest causes of mortality for birds, but simple solutions are easy to find! Our panel includes experts from the American Bird Conservancy, the Fatal Light Awareness Program, and FeatherFriendly who share why birds collide with glass and what you can do about it. May: The Cat’s Meow details the lives of one of our favorite pets, the cat, Meet the author and learn how you can keep your cat happy and healthy through leash training and outdoor enclosures, or catios. 4migratorybirdday.orgWhen is WMBD?World Migratory Bird Day is not just a day. It’s a year-long celebration! Birds migrate at dierent times in dierent regions, and this campaign is designed to reect that. Although the traditional dates are the second Saturdays of May and October (May 10 and October 11 in 2025), we encourage you to host your event when it best suits you and when participants are most likely to see birds.7 Calls to Action for Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities:1. Plant Native Plants: These provide food and shelter for birds. 2. Combat Collisions: Following the American Bird Conservancy’s Bird-Friendly Building Standard is an important way to make spaces safer for birds. 3.Turn o lights at night: Bright lights confuse birds during migration. 4. Avoid Pesticides: Keep water free from pesticides and plastic. 5. Prevent Plastic Pollution: Plastic waste also destroys habitats, making it harder for birds to nd food and safe nesting spots.6. Keep Cats Inside: We love our pets, but cats like to chase birds. Keeping them inside helps keep the birds safe.7. Choose shade-grown coee: Look for certications like Smithsonian Bird Friendly®, choose Fair Trade and Organic options, and shop local to support sustainable agriculture. You can advocate to make your city or community bird-friendly. Ask your local leaders to support buildings that are safe for birds, launch a program to reduce light pollution, work with your local Humane Society to improve protections for cats, and ask your grocery to carry local and sustainable foods. Help us spread the word! Learn more about the 2025 theme at migratorybirdday.org Art and education are at the heart of World Migratory Bird Day.
