The pastoral care of our students is a priority at AlbanySenior High School. Our Student Services team includesmembers of varying speciality areas that are involvedwith the monitoring and development of the ‘wholechild’. Members of the team include ProgramCoordinators, Student Support Officers, a SchoolPsychologist, Chaplain and Nurse. The transition from primary to secondary school is anexciting, yet challenging time for most young people.Not only is it a time when early adolescents areexperiencing vast personal changes, they experience ashift from a familiar environment to one that iscompletely new to them. Team this with the making ofnew friends, adapting to different teaching methods,moving from class to class and being around much olderchildren, the move into high school can understandablybe quite daunting.At Albany SHS we respect that the move from primary tosecondary school is a significant event in a youngperson’s life. Classes are put together based on information gained from various sources. Each class will havestudents from different schools and contain students with a range of different needs. Students mightbe lucky enough to have one of their close friends in their class, otherwise it is a wonderful opportunityto meet other students and form different friendships! * Students in the Gifted and Talented program participate in specialty English, Mathematics, Scienceand Humanities and Social Sciences classes. They also participate in our engaging, hands-on Arts,Technologies and Health and Physical Education classes with the rest of their year group. During Year 7 you are given the chance to engage in subjects from all Learning Areas. Albany Senior High School and the SchoolBoard in consultation with students, theirparents and staff of the school have formedour School Dress Code following the WADepartment of Education’s Dress Code forStudents in Public Schools policy andprocedures. Students are required to wearthe correct school uniform at all times. Albany SHS Sport uniform is worn only ondays when your student has PhysicalEducation (PE) lessons. Students arerequired to wear the sport uniform for PElessons and change back into their schooluniform at the end of the lesson.An extensive list of our school uniform canbe found on the Albany SHS websitehttps://www.albanyshs.wa.edu.au. Mobile Phones at Albany SHSMobile phones have the potential to disrupt the learning of students and we are unable to take responsibility for themif they are lost or stolen. The use of mobile phones for all students is prohibited from 8.30 am to 3.10 pm. This includes before school and atbreak times (phones should be off and away all day). Students areable to purchase food at recessand lunchtimes. Lunches can beordered beforeAbsent from schoolExplanation from your parents is required if you are goingto be absent from school. This can be done via Compassor phone (contact numbers can be found on the AlbanySHS communication page in this booklet). If you areabsent for a number of days due to being unwell, amedical certificate will need to be provided to the school. Late to schoolStudents must present to Student Services to sign in andobtain a late note. Lateness to school is monitored byProgram Coordinators. Students are required to showtheir late note to their teacher when they arrive at class.Signing outIf you need to leave the school grounds for any reasonduring the school day (e.g. an appointment, feelingunwell) you sign out at Student Services. Ideally, youshould do this first thing in the morning when you get toschool. Students must provide a note from aparent/caregiver requesting permission to leave duringthe school day with a reason specified. When studentsreturn to school, they sign back in at Student Servicesbefore returning to class.SmartRider CardsSmartRider cards are used for various reasons at AlbanySHS. They are required to loan books/equipment fromthe library, printing and catching the school bus.SmartRiders are issued to all new students on theircommencement at Albany Senior High School. If astudent loses/damages their SmartRider, a new card canbe ordered from the Finance Office at the expense of thestudent.Lunches can be ordered before school or at break 1 bypresenting at the canteen or completing an online orderthrough Spriggy Schools. Download the app to yourphone and create an account to start ordering.Year 7 AreaEach year group in the school has an allocated areawhere they can hang out before school and during recessand lunchtime. Activities such as ball sports can becarried out in this area. As with any area of the school there will be a number ofstaff members on duty at all times before school (after8.30 am) and during break 1 and break 2. YOURFIRST DAY ATALBANY SHSThe big day has arrived!Here is everything you need to know about what will happen on your first day at Albany SHS.When you arrive at school, head straight to the Year 7 area. Here you will be met by the Year 7 ProgramCoordinator.The day starts with a whole school assembly. When the bell sounds, a Student Support Officer will direct you to anarea where your bags will be left (staff members will supervise them) and you will sit in a space with the rest of yourYear 7 cohort at the assembly.At the end of the whole school assembly, the Year 7 cohort will remain behind for a Year 7 assembly, which willprovide you with information about the rest of your day. Here you will be issued your timetable before leaving withthe teacher of your first official class of the day. Instructions for the rest of your first day will be given during this class.What do I need to bring on Day One?You will not need to bring everything you purchased from the Stationery Requirement List. Only the essentials willbe required on the first day (listed below). Class teachers will give instructions regarding when other items arerequired.The Essentials!Pencil case containing pens, pencils, eraser, white-out etc.BYOD (or file with paper if you have not purchased a device).Recess, lunch (or money to purchase) and a water bottle.LockersStudents may need to use a locker. There is no cost. However, students are required to complete a lockeragreement form at the Finance Office and supply their own padlock.
