2THE BULLETIN WINTER 2024The Ontario Federaon of School Athlec Associaons (OFSAA) has been a cornerstone of high school sports in Ontario for an impressive 75 years. Since becoming incorporated in 1948, OFSAA has played a pivotal role in fostering athlec excellence, sportsmanship, parcipaon and leadership opportunies among students and teachers across the province. This milestone provides an opportunity to reect on the organizaon’s rich history, its impact on students, teachers, high schools and the enduring legacy it has built over the years.OFSAA was established in 1948 with the vision of providing a plaorm for Ontario’s high school athletes to compete at a provincial level. The organizaon aimed to promote physical acvity, camaraderie within schools, and healthy compeon among students, recognizing the value of sports in personal development. In its early years, OFSAA focused on a handful of sports, working with few regional associaons, steadily expanding its reach and inuence over me.Over the past 75 years, OFSAA has evolved to include a diverse range of sports and 18 member associaons, reecng the changing landscape of high school athlecs. What started as a modest organizaon overseeing a few sports has grown into a comprehensive governing body overseeing numerous acvies, including 21 sports and 45 championships and fesvals. This evoluon has allowed a broader spectrum of students to engage in sports, promong parcipaon within the organizaon.One of the core principles of OFSAA is the holisc development of student-athletes. Beyond the compeon, OFSAA places a strong emphasis on the educaonal and character-building aspects of sports. Through various iniaves and partnerships, OFSAA has provided student-athletes, teacher-coaches, and schools with opportunies for leadership development, academic and nancial support, and school community engagement. The lessons learned on the playing eld extend far beyond the game, preparing young individuals and coaches for the challenges they may face everyday.OFSAA’s inuence extends beyond individuals making a profound impact on school communies across Ontario. High school sports have become an integral part of the educaonal experience, fostering a sense of pride and unity among students, teachers, and parents. The annual OFSAA championships and fesvals have become highly ancipated events, drawing parcipants and spectators alike from all corners of the province. These events not only showcase athlec prowess but also contribute to the vibrant environment of high school life.Throughout its 75-year history, OFSAA has demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges. From logiscal hurdles to adapng to societal changes, with the help of volunteer members OFSAA has consistently evolved to meet the needs of its parcipants. The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges, prompng OFSAA to innovate and nd creave soluons to encourage student-athletes to connue parcipang in sports and physical acvies, in a safe and responsible manner. As OFSAA celebrates its 75th anniversary, there is a sense of pride in the achievements and contribuons made to high school sports in Ontario. Looking ahead, OFSAA remains commied to its mission of promong physical acvity, sportsmanship, personal development and is strategically addressing the organizaons core values of integrity, respect, leadership, equity, diversity, and inclusivity. The legacy of OFSAA is not just in the pennants and medals but in the countless lives it has touched and the enduring values it has inslled in generaons of young athletes and educators alike.Seventy-ve years of OFSAA represent a remarkable journey of growth, resilience, and commitment to the well-being of Ontario’s high school athletes and coaches. The organizaon’s impact goes far beyond the realm of sports, inuencing the lives of students, teachers and contribung to the fabric of school communies. As OFSAA connues to evolve, it carries with it a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generaons of student-athletes and teacher-coaches in Ontario. To all past and present OFSAA sta, presidents, directors, and volunteer commiee members, thank you for your commitment, passion, and dedicaon to high school sport.Happy 75th Anniversary OFSAA!OFSAA Executive Director’s Message By Shamus Bourdon

10THE BULLETIN WINTER 2024The OFSAA ExperienceBy Carlie Regier, Student-Athlete, South Huron DHS (Carlie is in the middle row, second from the right in the team photo at the boom of the collage.)On the rst weekend of November, our Panther eld hockey team of Exeter travelled to Milton to parcipate in the 2023 OFSAA Field Hockey Championship. For South Huron District High School, a high school with a populaon of just over six hundred, it’s not very oen that we make it to something as signicant as OFSAA. With only three cuts and a nineteen-person roster, my eld hockey team knew that numbers weren’t necessarily an advantage over other schools this season or any season for that maer. Over the summer, our coach held oponal pracces twice a week to improve our skills before the season began. During the season, we worked Monday to Thursday aer school for ninety minutes each night. Our head coach, Mr. Chisholm, put every minute of free me into our eld hockey team.Throughout the season we connued to win and nished undefeated. Aer a tough bale against Goderich, our team won the Huron Perth Championship tle, and we knew we were one step closer to our goal of going to OFSAA. At WOSSAA, our team was extremely anxious to play Medway, as the year prior, we had lost 5-0 and our spot at OFSAA. We came out strong and ended up winning WOSSAA, truly a dream come true. Our hard work nally paid o, and I was beyond proud of myself, my team, and of course, my head coach and assistant coach Rose Riddel, for what we had just accomplished. With OFSAA being only one week away, we went out for a celebratory dinner and then realized it was me to start looking for donaons. Our team went to small businesses, within Exeter and the area, and within less than a week, our small community donated over $10,000 towards our trip to OFSAA. On Wednesday morning, the rst day of our travels, the team loaded the bus and we all picked our seats. Our coach could now nally relax as he had collected all of our forms and we were nally on the road. The drive consisted of talking and singing with a few girls sing near the front with masks on as they had colds. We were not allowing anything, even a cold, to get in the way of our success at OFSAA other than our own performances during the games. As our rst game began, the team pushed hard for the enre sixty minutes resulng in a 7-0 win against Salleet DHS. In this game, every athlete on the team, excluding our rookie goalie,

Page 13

11got to see the eld at an OFSAA championship which is denitely something that not all grade nines would be able to say. At the next game, we won 4-0 coming out with an aggressive start once again against Clarkson SS. This game was frustrang for our team as we had mulple cards, which was something we weren’t used to experiencing. We recognized that our short corners were something that needed to be tweaked before our next game so our coach asked our opinion, and we made the decision to stay at the eld for twenty minutes and x a weak point in our game. It was cold and people were frustrated. Most of us felt stressed about how we would have me to shower, do our hair and makeup, and sll nd an ouit with lile me before the OFSAA banquet. There was sll work to do, and we weren’t going to let a small error in our short corner be the reason for our defeat. When we arrived at the beaufully decorated venue, we found our table which had a very cool bouquet of balloons. Our picture-obsessed team headed over to the photo booth and spent a good thirty minutes taking pictures together. Looking around at the table and all those I was surrounded by, it was truly biersweet as this group of people have made my high school experience one that I will never forget. As well, I knew that this was the last weekend that I would get to spend with my eld hockey family. To begin the banquet, there was a very inspiraonal speech given by Madison Babineau. Her speech allowed me to look at eld hockey from a whole new perspecve; it was not just a sport with a team, but a dream and a forever family. Then, it was ocially me to carry the banner, which was something our four seniors had been talking about forever. Kyle Dalrymple, Devon Farquhar, and Ryan Schepers and I got to walk the banner up to the front. The four of us have been training for eld hockey since grade seven when we were oered the opportunity to pracce in preparaon for our high school eld hockey career. We couldn’t wipe the smiles o our faces as we got to the front, and we heard South Huron District High School be announced as parcipants. We returned to the hotel, had some snacks, did our homework, talked, and then went to bed.The team then had an early morning, with another team breakfast and a quick bus ride to our third round-robin game. At this point, we had clinched a spot in the quarter-nal, but depending on how we did in this game against Waterloo Oxford, would decide who we would play for the quarter-nal game. Our team came out strong, but not strong enough. By halime, we were down 1-0, and Waterloo Oxford connued to control the game. It was me to step up. We hustled and le no me and no space for mistakes. In the second half, I was passed the ball from across the net and pped it into the le corner, tying the game. Our parents cheered, our team was ecstac, and our coaches were insanely proud! We now needed to hold them back, and although it was tough, we did, coming out with a 2-1 victory. This game was the best game of eld hockey I had ever played, and many of those watching said that it was the best game they’d ever seen.Due to our 3 and 0 record and round-robin results, we were assigned to play Oakville Trafalgar. We knew it would be tough, but based on our rankings, we felt we could be victorious. The drive to the eld, the warm-up, the rst half, and the second half were stressful. Our team was on re; we warmed up, we cheered, and we took the eld with the belief that this was not going to be our last game together. We were aggressive, in this fast game, nothing was more frustrang than this team’s defense. They were a wall. Nothing could get by them. We were scored on in the rst half, with an amazing aempt at a save from our goalie, Emily Smale, but we already knew that you couldn’t win without a goal, so we needed to do our job oensively. The half ended with a 1-0 lead for Oakville Trafalgar. I usually would feel worried, scared, and extremely nervous in this situaon, but I knew we were beer than this. I knew we were a second-half team, and we had every capability to win, so I pumped my team up and we took the eld for the second half. I fought so hard that my legs were cramping, but there was absolutely no me to stop ghng in this game. With the clock running low, and stress levels rising, our coach and parents on the sidelines began to tell us we were running out of me. Our coaches began to look more stressed. The clock hit two minutes, which meant we could no longer see the remaining me. Oakville got a short corner, and our mid and forward players went to half. At this point, we did and played hard. However, before we got to the defence, we were scored on again, making it 2-0 for Oakville Trafalgar with less than two minutes le. We spent those last two minutes ghng hard, with tears either being held back or rolling down our faces. The buzzer went, and we all broke down. Within this moment, all we could think about was the defeat. The team hugged unl we couldn’t anymore, and then we lined up to shake hands wishing Oakville luck in the semis. Oakville eventually went on to win gold and deserved that sweet victory. We returned to the bus and connued to grieve, but lile did we know that within days, weeks, or maybe months, we would look back at this experience and think about how amazing it really was. We had our me to be disappointed, but we could also look forward to spending our last night together as a team.We were exhausted from the day we had just had, but we were also sll taking in what we had just accomplished. Even though we were red, we are also teenage girls so we went to the mall within one hour before closing me. It was me to run again. We were literally speed-walking from store to store. Aer the mall, we headed back to the hotel, and once we got there, Coach Chisholm stood up for one last team talk. The next morning, we loaded the bus and made our way back to our small town of Exeter.Since OFSAA, we were recognized with the OFSAA Field Hockey Team Sportsmanship Award. Our school had an assembly to celebrate our accomplishments, and I connue to receive congratulaons for our team’s accomplishments this year. At rst, everyone told me that even though we lost in the quarters, I was going to look back at the experience and feel an unbelievable sense of pride for what we had accomplished. They were right. Although winning OFSAA was ulmately our team goal, I will never forget the experience I had at OFSAA. Ever. OFSAA NEWS

12THE BULLETIN WINTER 2024 OFSAA Reflections By Margie McGillFormer OFSAA PresidentI’m very honoured to have been asked to contribute to this edion of the OFSAA Bullen during OFSAA’s 75th anniversary. I served as OFSAA President from 2002-2004. During that tenure Colin Hood rered, Doug Gellatly was hired (the rst me), Diana Ranken cut back on her assistant director dues and the structure of OFSAA changed to its’ current model. I was once told by one of the oce sta that I was the most hands-on president and got involved in all aspect of the organizaon. It’s how I work. I’d like to thank the Execuve Directors, Colin Hood, Doug Gellatly and Shamus Bourdon for allowing me to do so.I grew up in Oakville and went to Thomas A. Blakelock High School. I wasn’t a star athlete but I held my own. What I really liked doing was the behind-the-scenes things, refereeing and coaching. I knew what OFSAA was but never competed there. My rst personal OFSAA memory was driving to OFSAA track in 1972 at Etobicoke Stadium. I was going to cheer on my fellow car-load of TAB athletes and help our coach, Rock Osborne, marshall for the javelin. He jokingly blamed me for us missing the correct turn and ending up on the 401 thus making us late. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing that day except holding the end of a tape measure and following his advice to not get hit by the javelin. I did learn to throw the javelin though! But what I remember most about my rst OFSAA experience was sing up on the hill watching planes take o and land at the Toronto Internaonal Airport with our triple jump competor and we both almost missed our events. Fast forward many years and I’m the department head at Waterdown District High School who’s sing at her rst OFSAA General meeng as President of SOSSA. While I watched the proceedings, I liked what I saw and decided I wanted to do that. Thank you, Andy Marnson, for seng such a good example. I kept my involvement with SOSAA and once I became an administrator, I became their Principals’ Representave for several years. It was in that role that I began my acve involvement with OFSAA. In 2003-2004, Waterdown celebrated the school’s 150th Anniversary. During that me, I came upon a photo from the 1970 OFSAA track team where Waterdown’s senior boys broke the 4 x 100 relay record with a me of 42.8 seconds! That photo was the pride and joy of my former colleague and coach Kaye Paterson and remains a viable part of our Warrior history.I got my feet wet in OFSAA championships through girls’ hockey and volleyball. Our girls’ hockey coach at the me stepped down mid-season and the players came to me to be the sta advisor so one of our former students could coach them. I had coached many of the girls in volleyball and they knew my boys played hockey and I helped out some. Next thing I know the team is o to the Beatrice Ice Gardens and the wonderful Al Rose’s many tournaments. I worked with Al for two years to run his tournaments where we had close to 90 teams in six dierent divisions. Girl’s hockey was just taking o and many teams were mostly made up of ringee players but also some high-performance hockey players. Olympian Cherie Piper was a prime example of the variety of players we had playing at the me. She was playing at almost the highest level of girls’/women’s hockey and her high school wanted to put in a team but in the lowest division. Needless to say, no one could touch her and her team won that division. Then, with OFSAA’s blessing, it became a “fesval” level championship and o we went to Pembroke and Petawawa where over six days we registered 96 teams, had four banquets put on by Fellowes High School’s culinary classes and I worked with the talented duo of Harley McDowell and Russ Holmberg. These two men went on to host several other OFSAA championships, chair the SAC commiee and won the Leadership in School Sport Award in girls’ hockey. They helped me establish the SAC commiee, design the playing regulaons and get the championships down to a size a convenor would be willing to work with. A couple of years later it became a championship in 2003 and was held in Mississauga. The banquet had Ron Ellis, former Toronto Maple Leaf and Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga, as guest speakers.Volleyball was my true love. Waterdown girl’s won bronze at the 2000 championship held at Seneca College. It was then I 

Mark Hesse, Atlanta Olympics bronze medal winner in beach volleyball, spoke at the banquet and let the athletes hold his medal. Unbeknownst to us we had two future Olympic competors playing on our courts – Sarah Pavan from Forest Heights and our own Heather Bamsley, a junior we moved up for the experience. Our girls eventually went on to win two golds, a silver, another bronze and the sportsmanship banner over their 12 years of OFSAA compeons. At that me, OFSAA was trying to decide if they would introduce a AAAA division for schools of 1250+ students. I was informed that in Newfoundland/Labrador that the AAAA division was for a school of 125 students. I sat on this Board unl 2007 sharing many of OFSAA’s accomplishments and challenges but more importantly gaining a naonal exposure to high school sport and what it means to the athletes, coaches and schools. In 2012, Doug Gellatly asked me to volunteer with SSC and I’m sll doing it today. It keeps me up to date on what’s going on in high school sport across the country, the trials we’re facing in school sport these days and most of all, the successes. I try to report on every championship across the country because those are the important things to our athletes. In closing, coaches, remember you are seng the example for these young impressionable athletes. Sportsmanship should be your number one priority. Teach them to be a team player and school leader, to win gracefully but most of all, to lose with dignity and grace. Thanks for the memories. It’s been a blast!

28THE BULLETIN WINTER 2024OFSAA Football Bowls Series Windsor November 27 – 29, 2023SWOSSAA hosted the OFSAA Football Fesval for the rst me ever as the Bowl Series connues to make its way to dierent venues around the province. St. Clair College in Windsor was the site of the event and the games were played in a rst-class facility for this year’s parcipants. Convenor James Clarke and his dedicated commiee members did a great job of providing student-athletes and coaches with a memorable experience over the course of the three-day event. Despite unseasonably cold temperatures and windy condions, fans were treated to high quality football from some of the nest teams in Ontario. - The Simcoe Bowl started the week o with a game between the Bear Creek Kodiaks (GBSSA) and Chaminade Gryphons (TDCAA). Keeping the ball primarily on the ground, Bear Creek took a 14-0 lead into the halime break and were able to stretch their lead to 25-0 at the end of the contest. For Bear Creek, this was their rst Bowl victory in two aempts aer losing a heartbreaker in the 2022 Fesval. - The Northern Bowl was the second game of the day ping Assumpon College (CWOSSA) against Hammarskjold HS (NWOSSAA). Assumpon was able to score by way of the run, the pass and on an intercepon return while Hammarskjold’s only points came as a result of two safees in the 21-4 victory by the Lions. This was Assumpon’s second Bowl victory in six trips to the Fesval.- The third game of Day 1 was the Metro Bowl and the two teams involved in this long-standing Bowl game were Richview CI (TDSSAA) and Holy Trinity CSS (LOSSA). The Titans jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the rst quarter but Richview responded with touchdowns in each of the second, third and fourth quarters to take the 21-7 victory. This was Richview’s h Bowl victory in six games at the Fesval.- The nal game of Day 1 was the highly-ancipated Western Bowl and featured South CI (WOSSAA) and St. Mary’s College (NOSSA). South used their potent ground game to control the tempo throughout and took advantage of some key turnovers to win 33-0. South improved to 2-1 in OFSAA Fesval appearances while for St. Mary’s, this was their h me at the event.- Day 2 started o with the Independent Bowl between Herman SS (SWOSSAA) and St. Michael’s College represenng CISAA. Herman used a prolic ground game to score in each

Page 31

29Festival Resultsquarter and won by a score of 35-0. For Herman, this was their 8th Bowl win in 10 game appearances since the beginning of the Fesval.- In another much-ancipated bale between Corpus Chris CSS (GHAC)) and Huron Heights SS (YRAA), the Warriors used an opportunisc oence and a tremendous defensive eort to capture the Golden Horseshoe Bowl by a score of 37-2. Warriors WR Chloe Winterton became the rst female YRDSB student-athlete to win an OFSAA Football Bowl game. For Huron Heights, this was their 7th victory in 11 trips to the Fesval while for the Longhorns, this was their rst me parcipang in a Bowl Game. - The Central Bowl capped o Day 3 and had perhaps the most excing game of the event. A.N. Myer (SOSSA) took on the SWOSSAA Champs from Ursuline College. Aer taking a 21-14 lead into the halime break, the Marauders scored 10 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter on their way to a 38-21 victory. For A.N. Myer, this was their 4th victory in ve trips to the Fesval while Ursuline College was making their rst visit to OFSAA.  - The Naonal Capital Bowl featured two Eastern Ontario teams; the Frontenac Falcons (EOSSAA) against the St. Joseph Jaguars (NCSSAA). Frontenac scored the only points in the rst half on two eld goals before outscoring St. Joseph 21-7 in the second half to win by a score of 27-7. Maia Peters (QB) and Liana Langiano (Placekicker) were roster players for St. Joseph. It is believed that Langiano’s successful extra point kick was the rst points scored by a girl in the history of the Bowl Series, which goes back to 1982. The Falcons have now won a record 10 Bowl games in their 14 appearances at OFSAA.- The Eastern Bowl was the nal game of the Fesval and featured St. Roch CSS (ROPSSAA) and the COSSA reps from Thomas A. Stewart SS. Aer TASS scored the opening touchdown, St. Roch’s defence ghtened and the oence scored the next 20 points to win the Eastern Bowl 20-7. For St. Roch, this was their rst Bowl victory.

Joe and his commiee picked up this championship late in the year, leaving lile me to plan. However, they were sll able to put together a rst-class event that was all about the athletes. There was compeon and fun at every turn and all the coaches and student-athletes experienced an event to remember. On the court, many teams from 2022 qualied for OFSAA once again, resulng in familiar teams compeng for the championship. In a highly-contested eld, nothing seemed to slow down Uxbridge Secondary School (LOSSA) from defending their tle as they took home the gold medal in consecuve years! In the nal, Uxbridge defeated Garth Webb Secondary School (GHAC) in three sets, and congratulaons to Franco-Cité ÉSC (NCSSAA) – bronze medal winners over Ursuline College (SWOSSAA) in a close match.
