THE JOURNEY2This past year has been one of growth and a deepening commitment to our mission at Our Lady of Peace. As a Catholic non-prot provider of hospice and home health care, we are guided by our faith to deliver compassionate care to those in need of rehabilitation as well as those nearing the end of life’s journey and to support their families.In 2023, we were blessed to provide care to more individuals and families than any previous year. This expansion reects the growing need for our services in the community and our unwavering dedication to meeting that need. We are deeply grateful to our dedicated sta and volunteers who provide skilled and compassionate care with profound respect for the dignity of each person.This year we embarked on a comprehensive strategic planning process to ensure our organization continues to thrive and meet the evolving needs of our community. This involved gathering input from sta, volunteers, patients, families, and community partners. This collaborative eort has resulted in a roadmap that will guide our work in the years to come.Recognizing the importance of spiritual care, we undertook a signicant renovation of our chapel. This serene and welcoming space provides a place for prayer, reection, and solace for patients, families, and sta. We are deeply grateful to the donors whose generosity made this renovation possible.We are committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion where all individuals are cared for, welcomed, and respected. This year, we conducted training and began initiatives to better provide culturally appropriate care to the many communities we serve.Our mission would be impossible without the extraordinary support of our donors. Our Lady of Peace3This year’s luncheon was held at the University of St. Thomas Woulfe Alumni Hall on May 29. Nearly 500 people attended. Father Michael Joncas was our Master of Ceremony and Special Guest Star Musician. He regaled all with his famous piece “On Eagles Wings” as well as a few other of his compositions.This year was a little dierent as many families and businesses helped underwrite the event which helped us to secure close to $160,000 in revenue. The event featured a moving bagpiper performance of “Amazing Grace”, uplifting words of hope from our chaplains, and beautiful music by Jillian Anderson and Steven C. Anderson. This meaningful day of reection and remembrance brought together loved ones to honor those who will always hold a special place in our hearts.Join us again next summer in August for this unique event!
THE JOURNEY4MEMORIAL GARDENS RECEIVES BEAUTIFUL ENHANCEMENTS Our Brick Memorial Garden has been renovated and renamed Pathways of Peace.Volunteer master gardeners Jody and Steve Anderly and Joanne Hense and Peter Honsa have been an integral part of making these gardens the most beautiful aspect of our outdoor space. Meanwhile, volunteers from Deloitte Consulting, led by Board Member Molly Stormont, painted the gazebo this past summer (see page 5). Hannah Thorne also took time out of her busy summer to paint the swing. Combined, their eorts have a stunning eect. You can still purchase a brick to memorialize a loved one! This annual event is a somber yet joyful celebration. The sta is always on hand to meet and greet the many friends and families, some of whom cared for their mom, sister, brother or father. There is a warm smile, sweet embrace or a tear shed when seeing someone they met and came to rely on during their loved one’s stay at Our Lady of Peace.Friends and families once again had the opportunity to request an ornament to be placed on the tree bearing the name of a loved one who has died, which could then be taken home after the service. The 2024 event was held on Sunday, Dec. 8 and will be covered in next year’s issue of The Journey. Thank you to all those who attended.CELEBRATION OF LIFE DRAWS LARGE CROWDWelcoming his rst grandchild Tom Cassidy has worked as an RN at Our Lady of Peace for 36 years, forging deep bonds with his colleagues along with countless paents and their families. Bringing his rst grandchild, 16-month-old James (pictured on the cover of this newsleer) to his workplace has been really special. “James has brought total joy to my wife, Kate, and me – and the enre Cassidy family,” Tom said. “He’s cute, curious, comical and usually cheerful. He is a gi from God.” His proud parents are Sheila, Tom’s daughter, and her husband Joey. She has fond memories of vising Our Lady of Peace as a child, so she delights in the opportunity to now share it with her child.
Our Lady of Peace5There are many ways to support Our Lady of Peace – gifts of time, talent, treasure and teamwork! Our community continues to nd creative ways to help the hospice. For example, a group of colleagues from Deloitte Consulting in Minneapolis came out this past summer to paint the gazebo in the Our Lady of Peace gardens. Their teamwork refreshed the outdoor gathering space. The idea came from Molly Stormont, a Deloitte employee who is a member of the Our Lady of Peace board. “Volunteering with my colleagues has always been an incredible experience and wonderful opportunity to get to know more about the folks in our Minneapolis oce that I wouldn’t otherwise have had a chance to meet in our hybrid/remote work world these days,” Stormont said. “I was happy to share my passion for this organization with other motivated individuals who were looking to make a dierence in others’ lives.”Seeing the end result was satisfying. “I was beyond proud at the end of that day – not just because we made such a beautiful space for residents and their families to enjoy but because of the abundance of appreciation the Our Lady of Peace sta had for our eorts and the positive feedback I received from my colleagues that volunteered,” she said. “I think many were grateful to learn more about the hidden gem that Our Lady is in our community.”Stormont shared her personal experience with Our Lady of Peace, which provided “loving care” for three of her four late grandparents in their nal days.She learned that a colleague also had experience with Our Lady: her father lived there last year during his battle with cancer. “It was her rst time revisiting Our Lady of Peace since he passed, and she was thankful to nd a way to give back.” Deloitte has a longstanding tradition where, once a year, employees take a day o client work to do community service. It’s called Impact Day. Stormont is already brainstorming on how to help Our Lady of Peace next year. “You can bet I’ll start the planning now for what enhancements we can make on Impact Day in future years!” she said. THE TEAM THAT PAINTS TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHERVolunteer ProleA group of Deloitte Consulting employees devoted a service day to Our Lady of Peace. They were inspired by Molly Stormont, a Deloitte employee who serves on the Our Lady of Peace board.
THE JOURNEY6Looking back, Mary Jo Deeb marvels over what a devoted homemaker her mother was. She made it look easy.Florence Bukowski was a rst-generation American who, as a young girl, only spoke Polish. She learned English for kindergarten and proved a quick study. Years later, she faced another learning curve when she married Clarence Deeb, a Lebanese man, and taught herself how to cook Lebanese dishes.Florence kept everyone aoat by staying anchored to her Catholic faith. She raised three kids, managed the house and cooked every meal – all while helping Clarence launch Roseville Plumbing and Heating, a business he operated out of their Roseville home. She answered the phone, elding service calls and helping track the business.She did it all with a smile. Her kids – Greg, Barb and Mary Jo – remember coming home from school to warm brownies. Her steadfast love was the centerpiece of their childhood. They attended Catholic school – St. Rose of Lima in Roseville and then Our Lady of Peace in St. Paul – and observed how central faith was to their parents. “At night, if you’d walk into her bedroom, Mom would be on her knees praying,” recalls Mary Jo. She leaned on God when providing for their family through self-employment felt unsteady. The kids once heard her ask Clarence if he’d received a payment. When he answered in the armative, Florence replied: “Oh, good! Now we can get new shoes for the kids.”Attending Mass as a family every Sunday was non-negotiable. One Saturday night, a major snowstorm appeared to be keeping them homebound. “Oh, no!” Florence declared. “Clarence, you’re going to call up [their friend] Joe and he’s going to bring the tractor and plow the driveway!” Florence cultivated many friendships over the decades. All ages were drawn to her “caring and loving” personality, as friends often described her. They admired her sense of style – an elegance she’d developed early in life as a beautician and maintained until her nal years. After their baths, she’d wrap her daughters’ hair around her nger and then slide in bobby pins to hold the curls overnight, topping their look the next day with a bow.Florence kept busy, whether she was putting together Halloween costumes for her kids in the 1960s – which involved going into closets to put hobo costumes together – celebrating a holiday, supporting a cousin or cheering on her beloved Minnesota Twins. She became a grandma to four and a great grandma to nine precious children – her pride and joy. Her work ethic never subsided. Later in life, she took a job at the Sam’s Club in Maplewood demonstrating their products and serving samples. All the customers loved her. Some dubbed her “The Energizer Bunny.” She even ran into a customer at Mount Rushmore. She made each one feel important, remembering the details about their lives. “She loved people,” Mary Jo said. She remained sharp into her early 90s, balancing her checkbook, remembering birthdays. But at 93, a severe stroke paralyzed her right side and halted her speech. Her family rallied around her. They were lled with relief and gratitude when she was accepted to Our Lady of Peace. They expected Florence would only make it a few days, but she lived four and a half weeks. “I attribute that to Our Lady of Peace,” her daughter Barb said. “She was happy here. She received great care and her symptoms were well managed.” Florence passed away on July 21, 2016, having lived a full, happy life and having experienced a peaceful, dignied death. Our Lady of Peace7Growing up with a family business, Florence Deeb’s youngest child Mary Jo had an innate business acumen. She watched her father work long days as founder of Roseville Plumbing and Heating and make strategic decisions, such as the choice to pivot from residential to commercial clients. By the time Mary Jo was 16, she had a job. She’d picked up her dad’s mechanical knowledge. A resident of Richmond, Va., Mary Jo was a skilled account manager in healthcare and then founded Deeb Development. When she began buying investment properties, she was never afraid to roll up her sleeves and do the dirty work.“I used to do the small plumbing maintenance on my own properties,” Mary Jo said. “I’d do my own assembly and put ceiling fans together. All three of us kids picked up that immigrant work ethic.” Witnessing the incredible care her mom received at Our Lady of Peace left a lasting impression on Mary Jo. She stayed in touch with the sta after her mom’s death in 2016. Eventually she decided to make an estate gift to Our Lady of Peace. After numerous and thorough conversations with her advisor, the strategic use of a charitable remainder trust was selected. This enables her to enjoy signicant income tax benets, enhance her retirement income and secure a substantial contribution to Our Lady of Peace at the end of her life. Her advisor, Bud Sanders, said that many people are not aware that a charitable remainder trust can be an excellent option for giving. “What a relief,” Mary Jo said. “A burden is lifted.” Her nancial advisor discussed it with her in detail, describing it as an excellent nancial decision. Not enough people are aware it’s an option, he said. Estate gifts aren’t only for the auent or those who inherit money, Mary Jo is quick to point out. She made her own money and wants to put it toward a good cause at the right time. Her estate gift ensures that other families will receive the same free, loving care that her mother did when they need it most. Peace of mind“We’re big proponents of estate planning. You want to give back, but maybe your kids are sll young and you’ve got college to pay for, you’ve got bills and a mortgage. If you always say, ‘Someday I’m going to do it’ – none of us know the hour. It could slip through the cracks. Estate planning gives you peace of mind – and it’s less your kids have to deal with. If more people knew about it, they would do it!” Mike Neeson, a Sllwater father who, along with his wife, Pay, added Our Lady of Peace to their will.
THE JOURNEY8Ken Jensen was never one to brag – unless he was talking about his kids and grandkids. Then he loved boasting about their success. And they gave him plenty to brag about.All ve of his kids earned college degrees, with some completing MBAs. They married well and built successful careers. One even rose to fame: Belinda, KARE 11’s legendary meteorologist. Most importantly, they raised good kids who shared Ken’s values and looked out for others. Ken was bursting with pride. In his later years, he became a great grandfather. That was, to Ken, as good as it gets. His beloved wife Jackie, ve kids, 10 grandkids, four great grandkids. “He was the true patriarch of our big family,” Belinda said. “The thing he was most proud of wasn’t his career, what he achieved or what he owned. It was the legacy he created – his family. He was super intentional when it came to family time together as we all aged and moved all over the country. His happiest times were family gatherings for reunions or weddings or when a baby was born – whatever it took to get people together. He lived for that. That was his greatest joy.” Ken had a modest upbringing. He was raised Catholic, which fostered a desire to serve others that would carry him to the Navy. After the Navy, he attended a local tech school, Control Data Institute, then launched a career in control data. He and his wife, Jackie, married young, pouring their all into raising ve kids together. Ken had a vision for their life. He moved the family from Apple Valley out to rural Prescott to live in the woods on the St. Croix River. It was an idyllic setting where their legs – and imaginations – could run wild. He believed good things would take root there. “It was super important to him to have us out in nature,” Belinda said. Ken’s love of birds proved contagious. The Jensens didn’t have fancy boats, but a canoe, a secondhand shing boat and a dingy sailboat got lots of use. They spent countless hours on the water. Sure enough, the seeds Ken planted would bear abundant fruit. “Being in nature as a kid absolutely steered my career toward environmental science and then meteorology,” Belinda said. “My dad prompted that in me.” The decades ew by, bringing more adventure, more travel and, of course, more family time. Ken remained anchored by his Catholic faith. When multiple myeloma entered the equation at age 83, Ken got very sick very fast. It was too much for her mother to manage. They needed to move Ken from his home, which was heartbreaking. Belinda’s trusted friend Ann Folkman told her about Our Lady of Peace. At rst, the Emmy-winning meteorologist was baed. How can every other place I call cost $800 or $900 a day and how can you be free?’” Sure enough, it was true. Soon, Ken was moved to Our Lady of Peace.“Finding out about Our Lady of Peace was a Godsend,” Belinda said. “He was so peaceful with the decision and welcomed so warmly. When he got there, he thought it was unbelievable. He said, ‘Oh my gosh, this is amazing!’ He found his last home there. It really was his last home.” Jackie was ooded with gratitude. “It gave my mom such relief that he was taken care of, and she could just love him and be his companion and not his caretaker.” The sta awed the Jensen family with their attentive care. “What made it amazing were the people,” Belinda said. “The nurses, the nuns, the volunteers, the dog that visited, the music, the food. He was kind of picky, and they were so sweet about it.”Ken recognized many benets to being at Our Lady of Peace. Friends could easily visit him. And he received Communion every day. The lifelong Catholic was proud that his nal home was Catholic. Ken’s sense of humor remained intact till the very end. He felt pampered at the hospice, which he dubbed “Our Lady of Peace and Spa.” Together, the team ensured that Ken’s nal month on earth was positive, worthy of the beloved patriarch. He died Sept. 19, 2023. A year after his death, Ken’s deep faith, devotion to family and love of nature endure. “Ever since he died, I’m feeding the birds like crazy-town,” Belinda said. “I know a lot more about them now. THE JOURNEY10When serving others is your legacy, it never dies. That’s the case for Helen Weides, who poured her heart into Our Lady of Peace for over half a century. Now, three years after her death, three generations have continued her beautiful work.It all began with an archbishop. When nine Hawthorne Dominican nuns founded Our Lady of Good Counsel in a former telephone toll oce on St. Anthony Avenue in 1941, Archbishop John Murray recognized their work was holy. He wanted the archdiocese to support the much-needed hospice, so he enlisted a group of intrepid supporters: the ladies groups at local parishes. The women of Annunciation parish in Minneapolis heeded his call. The Antone Guild and Friends of Our Lady pf Peace groups were formed. Initially, they helped the hospice by creating prayer shawls and donating bed pads to be used by patients. They found a tireless supporter in Helen Weides, a Minneapolis mother of ve who immediately grasped the importance of the Dominicans’ work. With her leadership, the women donated various supplies to the hospice and assembled colorful treat bags to be enjoyed by patients and shared with their families. Helen’s husband, Frank, was always proud of her service. She launched a fundraising dinner at Annunciation. The special event, held the second Sunday of October, drew a crowd and donated proceeds to Our Lady of Peace. With Helen at the helm, it ourished. Over the years, family became integral to its success – including her son, Jim, who cooked the meal. Her daughter Meg lent her creativity, adding new components like a gift-card rae and a silent auction to make the fundraiser more successful. Her daughter Patty runs the prep and service pieces with Beth, the other daughter, helping wherever needed! “My brothers and sisters and I grew up in a service family,” said daughter Meg Pospisil. “My mom would always say to us, ‘What can I do for the Lord for all the Lord has given to me?’” That was Helen’s guiding principle. Her commitment to service stuck because she put it into practice. “You teach it by doing it,” Meg said. Many of Helen’s 10 grandkids helped with the Annunciation dinner as soon as they were able to participate in tasks. When they grew up and married, their spouses got involved too. “It’s so amazing,” Meg said. “Everyone is willing to help. My daughter and daughter-in-law run the registration piece and collect the cash from the silent auction. My nieces and nephews help ll the room with friends of theirs who are quickly becoming the next donor generation. We work together to make it happen.” Little hands, big heartsIt was a joy for Helen to watch her grandkids and great grandkids arrange silverware and lend a helping hand as the dinner was prepared. She also took great pride in Meg’s decision seven years ago to accept a job in development at Our Lady of Peace. Now her daughter was working full-time to sustain the mission that meant so much to her. Helen’s nal Annunciation dinner was in 2020 – undeterred by the Covid pandemic, though creatively reimagined. Father Michael Joncas sang in the socially distanced worship space and guests took their meals to-go. It marked the 41st annual fundraiser there. That winter, when it was Helen’s time to go – at age 93 – it was only natural for her to move into Our Lady of Peace, where she received loving care around the clock. Covid restrictions at the time meant they could only have 3 in a room, so Helen’s family took her home under the amazing care of Our Lady of Peace Community Hospice. Our Lady of Peace11(Weides cont. from page 10) Not long after, her family rolled up their sleeves and began planning the next Annunciation dinner. “This has become a legacy issue for all of us,” Meg said. “We won’t let it die – not on my watch! I have to keep pushing to keep it going. But this was so important to her. It’s all about tradition and keeping legacies going.Still, it’s bittersweet to speak to the crowd each fall and mark another year without her mom, Meg said. “Every time I go to the microphone to welcome people, it’s like, ‘One more year without her. But one more year for her. For her legacy.’ It’s bittersweet.” Now all the materials for the meals are donated, allowing 100 percent of the proceeds to go directly to Our Lady of Peace.Record fundsThis past fall marked the 45th Annunciation dinner and raised the most funds ever. Acclaimed KARE 11 meteorologist Belinda Jensen was a speaker, sharing her family’s journey at Our Lady of Peace (see page 8). “We were blessed to have Belinda speak,” Meg said. “My sisters and I really felt my mom because there was no bigger fan of Belinda than my mom. She’d call and say, ‘Turn on your television! You have to see this coat! You have to see this dress she’s got on!’” For the great grandkids who never got to meet Helen – and for those who are too young to remember her – being involved in the Annunciation dinner is a way to learn about her. It connects them across time and space. “We talk about Grammy all the time,” Meg said. “This keeps her alive.”
THE JOURNEY12Generous donors came together to complete two high-impact renovations to Our Lady of Peace this year. We are so grateful to them! Vital renovations were made to the chapel, including new wooden beams for the ceiling and the much-needed addition of a sacristy. The result is a brighter, fresher and more functional worship space. The Sisters are excited to nally have a sacristy to store all their Mass parts, from altar linens to holy oils and chalices. They are tending to it with great care. The sacristy will also make it easier for visiting priests. “At Our Lady of Peace, our chapel is the spiritual cornerstone, a place where faith and healing intertwine,” said CEO Je Thorne. “Through the generosity of many donors, we have been able to complete a renovation of the chapel which included critical updates and repairs to the space. This was such an important project, as the chapel provides a sacred space for patients, families and sta to nd solace, prayer and connection with their faith during a vulnerable and spiritually signicant time. It serves as a tangible reminder of God’s presence, oering comfort and hope.” A second renovation at Our Lady this year has been the relocation of the breakroom to a bigger, much more useful space. It was long overdue – and has been well received by the hardworking sta. “Our employees are critical to our ability to provide compassionate, excellent care,” Thorne said. “The employee breakroom provides our sta with a vital space for respite and rejuvenation, supporting their well-being as they navigate the emotional and physical demands of caring for those nearing the end of life. With the nancial support of foundations and donors, we are able to relocate the breakroom to a new space and provide our sta a place for nourishment, connection and a momentary pause, fostering support among colleagues and ultimately enhancing their ability to provide compassionate care to patients and families.” BEAUTIFUL RENOVATIONS TO CHAPEL AND BREAKROOMWhat does giving back mean to you? Our Lady of Peace13The last time I wrote here I was preparing to welcome my rst grandchild and attending a Taylor Swift concert with my daughters. Since that letter one year ago, I welcomed not one but two grandchildren! Our girl gang has expanded. After raising three girls, I now have two granddaughters! Molly’s baby arrived last December and is named Charlotte. Mary’s baby arrived just ve months later and is named Grace. I am doubly blessed! Watching my girls become mothers has been touching. (We’re excited for my middle daughter, Maggie, to one day join the club.) Molly and Mary are fun, aectionate and patient mamas. The support of their husbands – my incredible sons-in-law, Cole and Mark – makes each little family hum. It warms my heart to see Charlotte and Grace interact, knowing they’ll make countless cherished memories over the years. Sometimes their outts even coordinate, thanks to their stylish mamas. Those tiny shoes! And so it is that my life is marked by beginnings and endings. As a grandma, I see the world anew through these bright-eyed babies – saying their hellos, breathing in their rst bursts of beauty, learning to love and grab on. As a professional, I see the world through the eyes of our beloved patients – saying their goodbyes, breathing in their nal bursts of beauty, learning to love and let go. Sunrise, sunset. Each day is a gift.The most important job I can do is to be a bridge to the generations before and after me – supporting them, nurturing them, calling them by name. We will be dened by the way we treat the youngest and oldest among us. “Blessed are the clean of heart,” Jesus says, “for they shall see God.” I have no doubt that they do – our loved ones just born, our loved ones nearing death. They see God. To borrow from the Celtics, this hospice is a thin place where heaven brushes earth. It is an honor to partner with you in sustaining our mission. We ensure that our patients’ nal days are peaceful – free of pain and free of nancial burden. For their loved ones, it’s also free of caretaking duties, allowing them to simply be a spouse again or a sibling or son or daughter.
