2 | SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2024Dear friends of Summermusik, This year marks the 50th anniversary of Summermusik (Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra) and the 10th anniversary of the festival! We have a lot to be thankful for. Standing on the shoulders of many phenomenal musicians, music directors, sta and board members, artistic and community partners, and generous supporters, we have been a beacon of innovation, community-mindedness, and musical excellence. This summer we want to recognize the artistry of our musicians who have dedicated their lives to music. We want to continue to explore new partnerships within our community and bring people from dierent cultural worlds together through music. And we want to celebrate the occasion in style!I encourage you to experience all three of our distinct performance series. Each possesses its own feel and set of venues—from the Mainstage concerts featuring the full chamber orchestra, to our more intimate A Little Afternoon Musik concerts, to our ever-popular Chamber Crawls. For our opening weekend we welcome the legendary Canadian Brass. We are proud that our Principal Trumpet, Ashley Hall-Tighe, is also the newest member of this world-class ensemble. Combining virtuosity, humor, and phenomenal musicianship, the Canadian Brass will be performing its incredible breadth of repertoire: from Baroque music to jazz—and everything in between. Our second weekend will focus on the relationship of words and music with “Shakespeare in Love”. Shakespeare’s poetry and storytelling has inspired composers since the beginning. We will partner with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company to create a program from Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and beyond. Our own brilliant concertmaster Celeste Golden Andrews will be the featured soloist in a dazzling and lyrical version of Bernstein’s Suite from West Side Story.Artistic and community partnerships are at the heart of our mission. Bridging cultures to bring them together is a musical expedition to discover common values of humanity. The third weekend is dedicated to merging two worlds that rarely meet: Classical Western music and the fascinating, largely improvised Indian music tradition. We will reveal how these two cultures—as dierent as they are—have a lot in common, and how they fit together beautifully. We will present music that inspired film, opera, songs, and cross-cultural conversations, and end with a timely message of peace. The Grand Finale—and final concert—will feature the symphony that changed music history: Beethoven’s Ninth with the “Ode to Joy”, a work that celebrates the 200th anniversary of its premiere this year. This groundbreaking symphony maps the journey from a dramatic beginning to an ecstatic ending and has become the music about the hopes and dreams of mankind. Hearing it performed by a chamber orchestra and choir will provide you with a unique opportunity to discover a familiar masterpiece in a new light. We are immensely grateful for you, our wonderful audience, and are looking forward to sharing our birthday and joy of making music with you!Let’s celebrate!Eckart Preu3 DIFFERENT CONCERT EXPERIENCESPhoto Credit: Phil Groshong

SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2024 | 13In this time of celebration, a moment of reflection.10-time Emmy-winning composer, Chamber Orchestra trustee and longtime supporter John Henry Kreitler passed away in January. Tonight, we perform his second symphony—his final oeuvre which he composed in celebration of the Chamber Orchestra's 50th anniversary. For his work, John took inspiration from the poetry of Elaine Hewes. In doing so, John Kreitler followed a long tradition of composers who found their muse in literary works. Literary works like the plays of Shakespeare—the greatest bard of all—which inspired countless pieces by composers such as Prokofiev, Brahms, Verdi, Dvořak, Khachaturian, Holst, and Britten, to name a few.Members of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will keep you entertained between pieces, while our music director and musicians compose themselves for the next work on the agenda."If music be the food of love, play on." — Twelfth NightSATURDAY, AUGUST 10Prelude Talk: 6:45pm | SCPA Mayerson TheaterEckart Preu, conductor7:30 pm | SCPA Corbett TheaterSHAKESPEAREIN LOVEERICH KORNGOLDIncidental Music to Much Ado About Nothing (1916)JOHN HENRY KREITLERSymphony No. 2, "The Voices of God" (Summermusik Commission, World Premiere)DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICHSuite from Incidental Music for Hamlet, Op. 32LEONARD BERNSTEIN, arr. 14 | SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2024Join our concertmaster Celeste Golden Andrews and her fellow Summermusik musicians as they present works inspired by literature. Debussy and Vaughan Williams found their inspiration in poems by Stéphane Mallarmé and George Meredith, respectively. Walton's musical setting of Edith Sitwell's poetry was intended as an accompaniment of a recitation of Façade. Schubert used his incidental music to Helmina von Chézy’s play Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus for his A minor quartet, and returned to Matthias Claudius’s poem, which he had previously used for the song of the same title (D. 531). SUMMERMUSIK FESTIVAL 2024 | 15Join us in our tribute to Jethro Tull, the English agronomist who brought about agricultural reforms and invented the horse-drawn seed drill and the horse-drawn hoe. Oh dear! Apologies all around, wrong Jethro Tull! Anyway, on this steamy August evening, do you remember December’s foggy freeze? What was a new day yesterday? Yes/no? Either way, let’s turn back Westminster’s Big Ben to the shuing madness of London in the late 60s and early 70s, my friends. We see Jerey, Aqualung, and cross-eyed Mary heading down to Leicester Square station, passing an old greaser sitting on a bench wondrin’ aloud ‘My God, if it were up to me, I’d get back to the family’. But the poor old sod only gets caught in the slipstream of the train as the 10:08 to Paddington winds up and leaves the station. Eastern classical music and Western classical music related to India’s history meet in our first-ever collaboration with members of the Indian community. With the help of artistic advisor and local composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran, we created an orchestral exploration that oers a peek into India’s fascinating and colorful culture, along with a tabla player, Indian dancers, and the Greater Cincinnati Indian Community Choir. The Great American Songbook is not an actual book, but a loosely defined canon of significant 20th-century American jazz standards, popular songs, and show tunes. The ranks of contributors include luminaries like Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein II, among others.
