Finally, I am grateful that we embarked on this buildingproject together, beginning with the construction of theadoration chapel. As we seek to grow in faith together, Iremind you that Eucharistic devotion offers us a practicalorientation toward Christ. It is my hope that our parishcommunity never wavers from this invaluable treasure.Let us continue to intensify our love for Christ in the MostHoly Eucharist, for it is God’s sacramental presence thatnourishes our minds and souls on life’s journey. I pray that God will continue to bless and reward ourefforts and that He blesses each of you and yourfamilies.Very Rev. Henry AtemMessage from the PastorVERY REV. HENRY ATEM, V.F.My dear parish family,Each year, I have the distinct honor of presenting you with the parish’s annual report. Thisreport normally captures the stories and data, programs and activities, which communicatethe financial, spiritual, and pastoral health of our parish family. It also highlights how we haveimpacted our local community through our generosity and partnership. This year, our reportis special, as it marks the end of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishmentof our parish and the beginning of our Growing in Faith Together (G.I.F.T.) building project. Asa community of faith, we have been extremely blessed by the manifold ways in which wehave experienced God’s grace and providence. Our 50th anniversary and building project arebut little expressions of how God’s bounty continues to sustain our community of faith. I amexceedingly grateful to each family here at St. Lawrence whose sacrifice of time andresources have helped us to witness another bountiful season. Our annual report indicatesthat our community continues to enjoy a steady growth in both numbers and impact. Ouroutreach services, faith formation and liturgical celebrations have transformed many livesand given us a rather practical opportunity to build a stronger, holier and more generouscommunity. Through you, I have witnessed God’s power and grace in our community. I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the clergyand members of our parish staff for their selfless support andsacrifices. I am immensely indebted to our advisory councils(Pastoral and Finance) for the steady oversight they provide to ourfunctions and operations. Above all, I thank each of you whocontinue to sustain the parish with your generosity, faith, andprayers. 4Michael and Michelle were born and raised as devout Jehovah’sWitnesses. Michael served as a “ministerial servant” (deacon) for13 years, but six and a half years into their marriage, he begangrappling with serious doubts about the faith’s obscure teachings.Troubled and searching for truth, Michael shared his concernswith Michelle. However, she did not agree with his perspective. The couple understood the risk they faced: Jehovah’s Witnessesadhere to strict shunning policies. Regardless of Michelle’sstance, they knew they could lose their relationships with friendsand family if Michael left the faith. Michael’s quest for answers ledhim to delve deeper into Christianity. Meanwhile, Michelleembarked on her own journey—not to join him, but to prove himwrong. In 2021, Michael encountered writings from the EarlyChurch Fathers, introduced by two friends, Austen and John.Discovering these ancient teachings felt like uncovering a hiddentreasure, yet it also brought a deep sense of betrayal; he realizedthese truths had been omitted from his religious upbringing. ForMichelle, her journey involved comparing the New WorldTranslation of the Bible with the New International Version. Thisside-by-side study revealed stark inaccuracies and, mostprofoundly, the deity of Christ.A Story of Faith:Meet Michael and Michelle JohnsonTogether, Michael and Michelle explored severalChristian traditions, attending Baptist and Anglicanchurches. Eventually, their search for the fullness of truthled them to St. Lawrence Catholic Church—a destinationneither had anticipated. To their surprise and joy, theydiscovered that the richness of faith they had beenseeking was found in the Catholic Church.Michael and Michelle were overjoyed to be welcomedinto the Church at the Easter Vigil in 2024, surrounded bytheir dear friends and godparents, Grant and BridgetteAdams. Now, as grateful members of St. Lawrence, theytreasure the support and guidance of the parish priestsand deacons in their ongoing walk with Christ. Reflectingon their journey, Michelle shares, “We did lose friends, and thanks be to God, our family still speaks to us. But itdoesn’t compare to all that we’ve gained.” Her wordsresonate with the promise in Matthew 19:29: “Andeveryone who has left houses or brothers or sisters orfather or mother or children or lands for my name’s sakewill receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life.”Today, Michael serves in the parish’s Safety and SecurityMinistry, and both he and Michelle are active in the YoungAdult Ministry. They eagerly look forward to deepeningtheir faith and finding new ways to serve their communityin the love of Christ. 7Michael and Michelle were born and raised as devout Jehovah’sWitnesses. The projected cost of the entire project is$10 million, and as of November 2024, we have raised a little over $3 million. Gwinnett is one of thefastest growing counties in the state. This growth necessitates planning and preparation. By joiningtogether in faith and commitment, every family in our parish can help build a strong and welcomingfoundation for generations to come. Your support for the G.I.F.T. Campaign is an investment in thespiritual, educational, and community life of our parish family. I remember going to morning Mass with TeeCogswell, standing there as our children ranaround us, and she remained unfazed—a quietreminder of her and Dave’s devotion to St.Lawrence. My brother and sister-in-law, whowere like parents to me, later urged me to leavethis parish when they moved to independentliving. 'Are you crazy?!' I replied. St. Lawrence ismy home, where I want to be laid to rest with myhusband. Even though the Catholic Church of St.Monica is close, this church fills me withmemories that make me smile and cry. It willalways be where I belong. When we moved to St.Lawrence in 1979, we knewno one and used the parish tofulfill our Sunday obligation. After the deaths of threechildren, we knew we had alarge loving family at St.Lawrence that would help usand our children reach God’seternal Kingdom. with love, John & Mary RatermanA Year of Jubilee5To be able to celebrate the 50 year jubilee at St.Lawrence Church was a golden opportunity towitness and remember those who gathered first toestablish St. Lawrence as a parish. From the memorywall, we were able to remember the manyparishioners who through trials, tests and so manyblessings have brought us here today as such abright and diverse parish. Many are still with us andtheir children have their Catholic roots here. All theevents served to bring us all closer together andbetter focused for the future as we continue to grow.
