Rules for Heat Management - Every 10-15 minutes we break for a drink – Set your phone or watch timers – All students must stop play - No exceptions - Ex. “H20 | GO GO GO!!” - Use water guns to cool students down – Avoid direct face shots and aim for backs and backs of necks - Get spoken confirmations from all students that they’re doing ok - Good opportunity to practice pulse checking! TEACHERS: Every outdoor activity location must have: - Pop-up Shelter + Box Tops - First-Aid Bag - Water Keg (Cool Water) - Be on ZELLO Talk with your class about: 1. Let’s keep track of ourselves AND our friends. 2. Encourage each other to drink water “Sip, don’t gulp!” a. Water with a bit of sugar is great. But sports drinks ARE TOO SUGARY and are hard for our bodies to process, cut them with more water! b. Beverages like coca-cola are not our friends. 3. Encourage each other to wear hats, long-sleeves a. Also sun-screen.. but light, synthetic fiber-made, long clothing will help keep us cooler, healthier, and protect the environment and animals! It will also protect us more from mosquitos! 4. Choose Your Attitude! Actively encourage students to accept feedback outside and surrender to sense and self-care! The heat will can make us grumpy and a bit crazy! Remember kindness and care to all our friends!

Page 6

Introduction to First Aid Checking the pulse! We can check three kinds of pulses today! 1. The Neck (Carotid Pulse) The strongest of all pulses. BP over 60mmhg 2. Wrist (Radial Pulse) Most common! BP over 70mmHg 3. BONUS The top of the foot (Pedal Pulse) BP Over 80mmHg When feeling of pulse is secure, count the beats for 15 seconds. Then multiply by 4. If your kids cannot do this, try 30 seconds and multiply by 2, or just take a whole minute. EX. 18 beats x 4 = 72 BPM Normally healthy range is 60-100 BPM. Generally, lower is better. But children and old folk will trend higher. Our BPM can reach up to 220 during peak exercise. It can tell us many things about what is happening in our bodies. Did you know that breathing is also important? You could have a bad time if you stopped! Quickly! Take another breath! Good job. The average BR (breathing rate) is 12-20 per minute. Children tend to be higher. You can measure each others’ breathing rates. Breathing Temperature A normal temperature is 36.5 C to 37.5 C Our temperature will change throughout the day and depending on what we are doing. Brain Failure >41C Fever: > 37.5C Normal 36.5 C to 37.5 C Hypothermia > 35C Frozen < 0C - Fevers are not always bad. Sometimes a low fever does not mean you’re sick, but your body is fighting something that could make you sick later. - Men will normally be a little warmer than women. Thermoregulation! We can sweat to control our body temperature Even if you feel you didn’t, you are! On average, we can sweat 2-4L every day if it’s hot. And some people have even been measured as having sweat 15L in a single day! We can pass around thermometers to take each other’s temperatures.

Introduction to Kickball Passing & Catching Drills Set up: Create two cone boxes and put many balls, perhaps 10, in one box. How to play: Players must pass the balls down the line to the next players and fill the opposite box. Use a timer and compare times for a challenge. . Field Kicking & Catching Set up: Create a simple shooting line of no more than 5 at a time. Everyone else is a catcher. Practice using home base and lining up properly as kickers. Teacher can start as the pitcher and pass off to students when ready. Optional: You can add bases and full runs for kids who don’t know how baseball is played. How to play: Kickers line up and catchers take position. Pitcher rolls all the balls until gone. Who caught them? Good job! Choose next five kickers to line up. Play Kickball! Set up: Play standard rules kickball with a score board. You can play however many innings you like. But 3 is recommended to play more than one game. Balance teams if one team dominates the other. A few rules to clarify: 1. You must touch a player or a base with the ball, we do not want to play throw-hit-out style. 2. If someone with ball touches a base that the runner is already running toward, they are out regardless of pressure because they cannot run back.

Page 8

Introduction to Badminton Badminton: A gentile game of hand-eye coordination! - The rules of badminton are surprisingly detailed. So just play a simplified version, with up to 3 people on each team. Bird on the ground gets a point but must be within cone box. Otherwise, point goes to last hitter’s team. Touching the net gives the other team the point. - If a team scores a point, they may serve next. - The Server should rotate every turn within a team. Commands & Phrases “Your turn to serve” “Serve the birdie!” “You hit the net!” “Outside the cones!” Racquet Birdies Net Cones

Introduction to Archery Shoot an arrow at a target! - Introduce proper method to inspect, nock, prepare, aim and fire an arrow at a target. - Today is relatively simple target practice. Set up the rigid sucker-arrow targets. Create a shooting line with cones and let no children pass that line while firing is underway. Assuming they’re right-handed: Left arm holding bow straight out, left index finger over nocked arrow until ready to aim and fire to prevent dropping the arrow. When ready, remove finger and use two fingers on opposite sides of arrow nock to pull back bowstring to the jawline. Relax. “Loose” the string and fire. - Each student can fire 2 or 3 times then switch with their partner. Then “Bows Down!” and they may proceed across the line to collect arrows again for firing in the next round. Anyone who picks up a bow and practices the motion of firing should be DQ’ed from participating. TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY. - NO DRY FIRING. Firing bows without arrows apparently can damage the bows and strings. COMMANDS: - “Nock (your arrow)! Aim! Loose!” - “Cease Fire” - “Bows Down” – All bows down, no holding or playing with bows while everyone is collecting the arrows to avoid accidents. USE A WHISTLE to supplement this. - FOR THE BABIES! We have 4 hand bows for the students who lack the physical strength yet to pull back on the normal bow. FYI – The hand bow arrows are not arrows! They are bolts. And they are not compatible with our normal bows as the nicks are magnetic! Let your students know this! - FUN IDEA: As a teacher, you’re a grown adult. All the a rrows at this point are sucker-arrows, not sharp. Throw on a pair of safety glasses and put yourself behind the target at a distance of at least 7 or so meters from the archers. Taunt them to shoot you. It’s fun. Dodge and hide! Have fun with your students. >>> This will lead into more Target Shooting & Arrow Tag Basic Bow Hand Bow Sucker Arrow Soft Arrow Target

Page 11

Basic Target & Shooting Line Set-Up Variations: Moving Target: Pick up a target board or use another surface you can hold. Move across the field of fire and encourage students to hit the moving target. Wear safety glasses. Ninja Warrior: Use boxing strike pads as oversized armor to block arrows shot at you. Give points for any body hits. Introduction to Stratego STRATEGO: Use this as introduction for less-experienced classes. LIVING STRATEGO: This the real-life manifestation of our Stratego board game into a breathing physical game of war and strategy! Remember in this game we want to avoid “killing” our students. “Eliminate” instead. It is important to teach this as a SPOKEN game. You need to be aggressive in enforcing that! - RULES: - If you don’t speak your rank or at all, you are eliminated automatically. - If someone tags you and you run away, you are eliminated automatically. - The game, which at this point you should be familiar with, two teams face off until a goal is accomplished, or the other team is all eliminated. In an encounter, which happens 1 on 1, is started upon tagging the other player. The attacking player asks “What’s your rank? I’m a captain.” “I’m a marshal. You have been eliminated.” Winner is determined based on rank, highest rank wins except in special unit cases. - If a player is eliminated, they may return to their home base (Teacher) to receive a new rank card. S: “Teacher, I was eliminated by Sunny who was a colonel.” T: “What rank were you?” S: “I was a sergeant.” T: So sad. You are now a major. Give the student a randomly shuffled card from the remaining deck. >>> This will lead into Living Stratego: THE FLAG & Stratego: KING OF THE HILL STRATEGO RANKS Special Game Rules: - Only the miner eliminates bombs. Bombs eliminate everyone else. But bombs cannot tag anyone. If a bomb tags someone else, the bomb is eliminated. - Only the spy, bomb or another marshal can eliminate a marshal. Spy eliminates marshal if tagging first, marshal eliminates spy if tagging first. If disagreement ensues, then paper-scissors-stone. - If two of the same rank meet, they are both eliminated. - Lying is okay in this game until two players meet in actual battle. That’s called counterintelligence or being a good spy!

Introduction to First Aid Today we will practice the basics of rendering first aid. Below is the handout that goes to students, but it also a good progression plan of explaining things. The most important part about today is being able to 1. Check pulse & temperature and 2. Assess, clean and cover wounds. CPR has been done to death via public means and awareness, but feel free to do it too. However, CPR practice often makes some kids uncomfortable and is rife for physically abusing each other. So skip if you like. It is more interesting to do pulse and wounds. Watch the videos below for how-to’s on using triangular bandages. Checking the pulse! Sometimes a low fever does not mean your sick, but your body is fighting something that could make you sick later. - Men will normally be a little warmer than women.

Page 18

So now, what if you get hurt? 1. Stop bleeding! 2. Assess patient! 3. Clean the wounds! 4. Bandage or secure wounds! Let’s practice with triangle bandages next with a variety of scenarios. 1. Broken/Hurt Arm or Shoulder (Arm Sling) 2. Head Injury 3. Sprained Ankle 4. Bleeding Wounds 5. Eye Injury 6. Hurt Jaw 7. Hip St. John Ambulance YouTube Page https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNTbPGW3esNltuJylZs89zQ “Primal Survivor 15 Uses for a Triangle Bandage” https://www.primalsurvivor.net/triangular-bandage-uses/ Thermoregulation! We can sweat to control our body temperature Even if you feel you didn’t, you are! On average, we can sweat 2-4L every day if it’s hot. And some people have even been measured as having sweat 15L in a single day! What else can we do with triangle bandages? Ex. Water filters (think back to Eco-Warrior Camp), Fire starting, Face Mask, Tying Things

This includes introducing and singing songs, karaoke competitions, interviewing students and teaching what kind of animals and features we will see on that day. However, while ideally maintaining entertainment on the way

Page 26

back to NWE, most students will likely be very tired and sleep. Let them, for they will be put to work again upon arrival. o Attendance should be checked before getting on the bus, after getting on the bus, at the end of activities, then again on the bus, then again as students depart the bus. Don’t lose kids. - There should be teachers & FITPs positioned along the hiking lines as we proceed. Including a small cluster of teachers at the back of the line to accommodate slow hikers. - Radios should be used to keep everyone in sync and aware of any changes or unforeseen occurrences. Zello will not work with all signal providers everywhere along this trail. - There should be a medical kit near the front and back of the line. Additionally, administrators (Ala-Thomas) are designated special responders run-of-the-mill scratches happen. If any trauma (like bruises, impacts, head bumps, hits, etc.) occurs, have kids sit in the water. Its low temperature will soothe pain and control swelling in the same manner as an ice-pack. - A hole must be dug upon arriving for sanitary concerns of 145 people in the same place. There are no facilities of any kind nea rby. Tell students it’s fine to pee in water with current. - If the weather is very sunny, bring water guns to cool down students on the trail and encoura ge use of hats and sunscreen. Contrary to some beliefs, sunscreen is not a substitute for a hat. If the day is cloudy, some students may feel cold. Encourage them to sit in sunnier parts of our pool area. YunSen Waterfall “Pool Area” SAFETY REMINDERS - Students need to exercise good judgement about clothing. Most especially loose articles like hats, glasses and shoes can be easily lost in the current. - To be careful about slippery surfaces when scrambling on rocks. And be aware that the rocks themselves can move. Consider bringing river tracing shoes with you for water patrol duty. - Animals are not permitted to be brought back on the bus, so leave the crab, shrimp, fish, dragonfly and frog collection there.

Page 27

- To be courteous to other civilians in the area. Teachers, we also need to be respectful, but at the same time don’t spend too much time or effort appeasing others. We are by far the larger group and prioritize STUDENT SAFETY above all else. This also means that time you spend worrying about other people is actually time that should be spent monitoring students’ safety and experience enhancement. - MUSIC > If playing music onsite, make sure that it is not very loud and is only on dry land away from swimming areas. It is important that music DOES NOT DISTRACT from water safety. - This is a covered trail but do your best to keep students cool and move at a CONTROLLED PACE, do not let kids move at their own free speed and become spread out, separated and potentially lost on the trail. Extra: A pair of slacklines can also be brought for use over water. Must be 15m+ blue slacklines.

Bring with you: Rules for climbing: Watch out for others Don’t step on ropes No Running Don’t wear climbing shoes in bathrooms! Use climbing shoes! No barefoot climbing! Don’t grab or step on bolts We’ll go to do TWO kinds of indoor climbing! Bouldering Top-rope Climbing Height: Low High Rope? ⛔ ✅

Page 39

For teachers: We will have 2 groups who go climbing on alternate days. Each of these groups will be divided into 8 teams of about 10 students each. Each team will get a climbing coach but will also need a teaching assistant (That’s you!) to help speed up and translate everything! Your duties: - Help students to take off and put on harness and climbing shoes. - Translate what is going on and maintain English speaking environment. - Keep things orderly and students observant of gym and climbing rules. We need two other teachers: - Bathroom assistant teacher - Front door watchmen and communications person - MAYBE also a bouldering coach TIPS for students: - Use chalk powder on hands! It will keep hands much drier and happier than climbing without! The students’ hands will probably feel a bit uncomfortable the first couple times they go climbing. This is very normal and will not continue after someone’s skin adjusts and becomes tougher. - Focus on using legs first! Then focus on the muscles of the back, not just pulling up with arms. Height does not matter. Climbing is about technique and focus, not strength! - Lean close to the wall and take some breaks while climbing up on a big wall.

Introduction to Rappelling Teach fundamentals of rope safety, courage, handling pressure & the art of rappelling. This is a technical, challenging activity that operates at a higher level of risk than other activities. Whether student or teacher, do not attempt rappelling without a professional guide with certifications and equipment. Failures in either equipment or practice can result in serious injury, even death. That said, we can all learn something from these kinds of activities and can make it very safe for our students to challenge themselves and grow. TWO WAYS TO FLY: OPTION 1: L1 Lowering: No student control of rope or vertical position/speed, Rappel-Master has control. Student need only worry about balance, mastering their fear and footwork. (Top-belay, no Fireman’s Belay) Climbing Basics Instructional Video “REI Rock Climbing: Climbing Techniques” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5u24y7coPE Rappelling will be done at School A 2F A5 Classroom Rappelling will be done at School A 2F A5 Classroom This activity is STRICTLY ADMINISTERED by Teacher Alastair

Page 41

Option 2: L2 Rappelling: Student can control rope and vertical position/speed. Rappel-Master can still convert to lowering later on if necessary. Student needs to manage rope control, control of body balance and footwork, master fear (Fireman’s Belay) L3 Canyoning: Student rappels through a “waterfall”. Belayers might want to wear goggles for this. (Fireman’s Belay) L5 Overhang Rappel: Rope is deviated onto Rappelmaster’s leg so that it is a direct, overhanging drop through the air, no contact with wall. Will be faster and can be done if rappeler is a tolerable weight and has established hand control skills. (Fireman’s Belay, but move closer and even almost under rappeler for safety) Rappelling equipment (Climbing) Harness Figure 8 (Descender) Locking Carabiner Rope Anchor Helmet Crash Pad (Mat) Shoes Gloves Lean back with legs walking on walls like 1960’s Batman! 1960’s Batman! Hold the rope behind body. If you see the color band on the gate, IT’S NOT LOCKED! Remember: Don’t tighten the gate’s lock!

Page 42

TEACHER DUTIES: We have three necessary positions when executing a rappelling activity. The roles and duties are as follows: RappelMaster: The (typically) top-side administrator of all on-rope activity. Responsible for proper set-up and function of rappelling system and all participants. Responsible for managing operation of all duties. There is only one rappel-master, though an assistant rappel-master may be available, the primary rappel-master is responsible for ALL proper execution of work. Also responsible for rescue should any at-height event occur. - Must prepare own rescue rope system and be properly equipped. Quartermaster: Responsible for making sure that all students are organized and properly outfitted with necessary equipment related to rappelling. There may be several quarter-masters during preparation phase of activity, but later on during actual event they may need to become belayers. - Check proper adornment of harness, make sure no egregiously hanging straps and firm, but not tight fit. - Make sure students have all proper equipment such as shoes, helmet, carabiner and figure 8 (if necessary). - Explain difference of lowering and rappelling to students. Reinforce process and energize younglings, - Manage classroom and ready rappelers Belayers: The bottom-side belayer is responsible for the safety of any student from the time they are rigged on rope until they are on the ground. By utilizing a Fireman’s Belay, shown belay, you are a safety back-up for the student’s inexperienced hands. - EYES ON STUDENT – From beginning sequence to a student’s feet on the ground, the Belayer’s attention needs to be fixed to the student! o BELAY SEQUENCE § Rappel-Master: Teacher Thomas! Belay Left! (Rappel-Master prepared the belay on the left rope from belayer’s position) § Belayer: Left Belay On! (Belayer’s confirmation that they are ready and engaged on the correct rope)

Page 43

- ALWAYS READY and VIGILANT - Maintain clear area for rappelers to land and keep crash pads oriented correctly. - Wear helmet and recommended to wear gloves Ex. 1 Belay at ready Ex. 2 Belay engage

Page 44

Archery Level 2 Goal: Continue to develop coordination and bow marksmanship Game 1: Shoot Your Teachers! Open by practicing a few rounds of standard target practice. Then introduce moving targets in the form of TEACHERS!! (Wear safety goggles or a mask, also blue/canvas jeans are your friend. Maybe a groin cup (available at Decathlon for $200) - FOR THE BABIES! We have 4 hand bows for the students who lack the physical strength yet to pull back on the normal bow. FYI – The handbow arrows are not arrows! They are bolts. And they are not compatible with our normal arrows as the nocks are magnetic! Let your students know this! Game 2: Dodge Hero! (Running a gauntlet) - Encourage students to also brave a flurry of arrows by running across and dodging a firing line. Position archers around gauntlet zone and give them 2 arrows each. COLLECT ALL SUCKER ARROWS AND STOW AWAY BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH GAME INTRO. IMPORTANT SAFETY: USE SOFT ARROWS and EVERYONE must wear SAFETY GLASSES. IMPORTANT SAFETY: You must teach a proper procedure for using soft arrows. 1. When picking up or using a soft arrow, always check the head to make sure it’s seated properly, impact foam is intact and not loose. 2. Check the nocks as well to make sure they are not broken and seated in the shaft. 3. ANY ARROWS THAT FAIL MUST BE GIVEN TO A TEACHER and collected for repair on the 2nd floor of school A. 4. Do not grab arrows by head. 5. Discourage senselessness, shooting at point-blank range and head-shots (Though they will happen). >>> This will lead into Arrow Tag Materials to have Bows, Cones, Targets, Sucker Arrows, Soft Arrows, Safety Glasses, Blazepods Bow Hand Bow Sucker Arrows Soft Arrows Targets Safety Glasses

Page 45

Dodge Hero Set-Up As always, the game shown is a recommendation and a degree of mixing it up is fine. Keep in mind that you should keep AT LEAST 3 METERS between shooters and runners to avoid point-blank range shots and preserve safety and fun. ALWAYS MAINTAIN CONTROL of the situation. Projectiles are fun, but potentially dangerous. If you’re not in control of your class, STOP ACTIVITY IMMEDIATELY (FOX40 Whistle) We have two kinds of soft arrows:

Page 46

Shown above is purpose-built for Arrow-Tag and below is a modified Decathlon “sucker” arrow. However, there are two things to be constantly vigilant about during preparation and play of Arrow-Tag. Below in Ex. 1, you must be aware of the condition of the foam on the head of the arrow. If it is close to being detached or substantially degraded, then that arrow must be removed. In Ex. 2, if the arrow head is not seated properly in the shaft of the arrow, then it must be reset so that the metal prong is not visible. This is easily to check during combat just by feeling the head of the arrow when picking it up. If it feels loose, then it is. If the arrowhead continues to be loose even after resetting, then that arrow must be removed. Additionally, if there is anything else outright wrong or damaged about the arrow, then that arrow must be removed immediately. Ex. 1 Foam Condition? Ex. 2 Arrow-Head seated properly? If arrows/bows need to be repaired/removed, send or leave the equipment on the outside of Teacher’s Box in front of School A Library Window Warning No Nerf Hyperstrikes for Arrow-Tag activities! Idea! Use BlazePods or balls on opposite side of start point for more goals!

First Aid Exercises PANIC: Sudden Injuries! Throughout your class today, you can as many times as you please, suddenly be unjuried and in need of first aid triangular bandaging. You can mix it up as well, plan with a co-teacher or an eager student to suddenly require first aid. Possible injuries: Broken leg, broken arm, blow to the face, etc… Be dramatic. Die for your students if need be! Remedies: Ice packs, physical assistance and triangular bandaging. Think of different ideas for quick and clean endings to this activity. Especially if you do it several times. Perhaps a code word arranged with another teacher? Perhaps a debilitating injury has made an FITP or student incapable of walking or even unconscious? Pre-arrange an ‘injury,’ perhaps in a remote place that will require a search and rescue (SRT) mission. If using an actual person, arrange a yoga pad to lay on or even a helmet. Decide whether you want to assemble a rescue litter from wood poles, yoga mat, ropes, etc..

Day 14-15: JinShan Queenstown Camping Trip Steel Thyself It’s a FULL DAY starting at 8:00am Thursday and continuing until 6:15pm on Friday! We will organize into two activity groups for the primary activities during the camping days. 1. Beach Day This is largely organized by outside company, but we should be translating all that is going on and teachers’ jobs are mainly playing with students, hawklike focus on appropriate and safe conduct on the beach and in the water. ACTIVITIES: Beach clean-up, Banana-boating, snorkeling, sandcastle-building, frisbee, shallow swimming and beach play Monitoring of the safety situation at the beach is of GREAT IMPORTANCE! We will have teachers stationed around the acceptable swimming beach area and not allow students to leave past the red-lined area. There may also be some banana boat and SUP rides provided by the beach company (Mr. Tao & Teacher Matthew are the responsible people). This is also the special event for Sports Masters! In the beginning of the day, Mr. Tao & Matthew will organize this for us.

Page 53

2. Secret Coast Hike (This activity will be conducted by NWE Teachers. Lead students up simple road, make sure everyone is safely hiking together, laughing/singing and drinking plenty of water. The latter part of the hike offers two choices, for the weak: they can continue and hang out at the top of the ridge and enjoy the ocean view. For the strong, they may proceed down to the cliffside for a fun, technical but very sun-exposed trek along the rocky coastline. Event Information DISTANCE: 3 Kilometers round trip. TIME: Estimated time to finish about 2 ½ - 3 Hours BATHROOMS: Beginning and Middle of hike Walkthrough >>>>>>>>>

Others Setting Up/Taking Down Tents Queenstown will provide us with most equipment for camping and their coaches will be around assisting. However, NWE students are mainly responsible for getting their own tents and sleeping arrangements set up! Guide your activity group students in this activity and help others when you see opportunity. Barbecue/Dinner (We are responsible for preparation but staff will help us with getting BBQ’s going. You must lead your own mini-groups in cooking and eating. Remember, we say the blessing together as groups before eating anything. The Campfire: We will have everyone sit around the fire spot near outside the pavilion area after BBQ dinner. FTP’s should prepare either a funny and or slightly scary campfire story to tell. Prepared to be on-the-fly entertainers for this 2-hour period. Lights out will be announced. From this point on we need to have quiet in the camp area. There will be bathrooms still available and teachers will be on-duty in common areas to monitor with this. Be ready for those kids to get up at the CRACK OF DAWN.. A gentle reminder There will be buddhas and bunkers along the trail! Please especially remind children, that though they can take pictures and have fun, be respectful of the buddhas. NO DISRESPECTFUL PICTURES SHOULD BE POSTED ON C.D. OR SHARED

Party Games Pong Rally - Set up: Bounce ping pong balls into a cup. Rinse. Repeat. 1. Just let everyone do and have some goes at it. 2. Turn it into a individual or team racing game. Beer Pong - Set up: The classic drinking game. But you don’t really need to explain its lineage too much, k? This game can be modified a lot to either easier, harder or as ridiculous as possible. You can play super-size version with our stacking buckets and plastic balls. Flip Cup - Set up: Classic party game. Set up a line of party cups along the edges of a table. 1. Let student practice flipping the cup from the bottom. 2. Make 2-4 lines along opposite edges of a table with the same number of teams. Students must one by one flip the cups in sequence and switch to the next person every time they flip a cup. First team to finish wins, but main goal is having fun. Splat! - Set up: Classic party game with 2-3 people per cup. The idea is to slap the top of the measuring cup as fast as possible in alternating order. You win if you suddenly gra b the cup away and your friend slaps down the crème! What a fun mess! Flip Bottle - Set up: Get some standard plastic bottles and fill them 1/3 of the way up with water. Flip and stand to win. Many variations of this game!

Page 61

Engineering LEVEL II Chopsticks Tower Goal: Build the highest tower you can that will hold a basketball. Materials: Scrap paper, tape, and scissors NOTES: Sportsmanship is as important to this activity as it is to all our other sports camp activities. Make sure that resources are distributed in a fair way and encourage kids to communicate, share and encourage each other. If you add more ‘resources’ to the activity while in progress, make sure they don’t take more than they immediately need. LIMITATIONS: An important aspect to controlling and explaining this activity is that we always have limited resources. Resources include time, materials, and hands. For example, only 2 or 3 students in a group. Give the students a hard time limit prior to starting the activity. Use your projector or a large timer everyone can see all the time. Constructing our Building Materials Any sheet of paper can be rolled into three sizes -- • if you keep the paper folded, start from the short end, and roll to the other short end, you'll have a small piece • if you unfold the paper, begin with the long side of the paper and roll, you'll have a medium strip • if you begin at one corner and roll to the opposite corner, you'll have a long tube of paper Other things to think about are strong shapes. Triangles are stronger than squares for example and if you get more advanced, domes are super strong!

Page 62

Pre-activity: Decide on the student groups yourself to encourage mixing and socializing amongst the whole class. Before starting the activity allow kids to sketch their ideas on a piece of paper first, then put them in their group. Encourage them to share their ideas with each other! TESTING Protocols: - Use balls of different sizes and weights to test structural integrity! - Measure them based on height, length of bridges, etc... - Shoot them with nerf or popper guns to test resilience!

You will split your class into a few teams to assess surveillance evidence, then scour the Qingpu cityscape to catch these criminals. The time is marked as 45 minutes, but can go over no problem. To avoid any accidents outside or around traffic, teachers on the lam will not run from students. For example, they need only approach the teacher within 5 meters and say, “Teacher Alastair, you are under arrest!” Since we’re just broken, misunderstood men paying our debts to society, we will give up and return to prison by ourselves Please do not harangue or attempt to forcibly detain us. Before parting, record the position of the arrest on your map of Qingpu, then receive the codeword for the cryptogram puzzle.

Beautiful Pond Park is an excellent location due to its abundance of bigger trees, but it is further away. Scooting there is advised. b. Waterfall Park is closer by and has a nice hedge to hide behind and a playground, too. c. Thomas Park is nearby and densly wooded on the far end. d.
