7 Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsPlacerArtistsTour.orgA large part of Placer Artists Tour mission is to encourage and mentor new and emerging artists. Thanks to local art patron, Joanne Ne, the Joanne K. Ne New & Emerging Artist Fund was established in 2023 to support this endeavor. New artists are the foundation for the future of the Placer Artists Tour. It is the responsibility of the Tour to foster these relationships. Regional leaders, along with communications director, Rebecca Martinez, mentor, assist and encourage the emerging artists as they prepare for the tour. New artists were presented and showcased at the Host Hotel, Auburn Springhill Suites. We have 30 total new artists this year with a wide variety of mediums and experiences. Visit them all throughout Placer County! All of the artists have much to share, but several stories stand out.ERIK MALLORY AND RACHAEL KNIGHT-REIGNS #69In the early years of his life, Erik was diagnosed with Spinocerabellar Ataxia (ATLD1). In 2017, he met and hired Rachael as his personal caregiver. Rachael’s lust for life quickly wore it’s way into Erik’s heart, and with her encouragement and guidance they attended a ceramics class together at American River College. Through trial (and much error) of various techniques for Erik to use, they found one that not only worked well for both artists, but also created beautiful, unique and functional works of art. Not long after Fondle These Bowls was born. LAUREL MATHE #77 “I love having grown up in the Sierra Foothills. My passion for wildlife and our environs led me to volunteering to create artwork for Auburn’s Protect American River Canyons in 1997, including their annual Conuence Festival. I created the artwork for the festival until the nal event in 2012. In 1999, I illustrated a swimming otter for PARC’s event. Although the Conuence Festival is no more, the otter recently found new life by appearing on the sides of some of the local Auburn transit buses, along with some new artwork of other ora and fauna, including a heron, kingsher, and rainbow trout. Some of my most fullling work has been in helping PARC protect and preserve the American River and its canyons.” DONALD LONSBROUGH #10“As a plein air artist, I have had many interesting travel experiences. I was painting in Auvers-Sur-Oise, France, where Van Gogh lived the last days of his life. I painted down by the river and out in the elds where he had painted, and was overwhelmed by the feeling of walking in his footsteps. I nished my work, and wanted to visit the Van Gogh Museum. I was dressed in my plein air clothes, straw hat and all. I heard 31st Annual2024New Aists Shi!New Aists Shi!a father say to his children, “Voice, Monsieur Van Gogh!” (There is Mr. Van Gogh!) Imagine my horror when I got to the Museum and found that it was closed that day! My heart sank. Then I saw this friendly docent, who I begged if I could please go in, as I had come all of the way from the USA to see this, and had to go on my way the next day. I took my paintings out and showed her what I had done...and long story shorter, realizing how much it meant to me, she allowed me to go in by myself, sit in the small bedroom where he had died, and to watch the lmed presented on Van Gogh’s life. It brought me to tears, a very profound experience. I was so touched that she “got it” and allowed me to have that experience. This is just to show that art is universal and it can break down barriers and connect us on a basic level.”TYSON SNOW #59“I recently moved my studio hundreds of miles away to Auburn so that my wife could be closer to her family. While initially hesitant, I discovered the intense love of art, sense of community, and wonderful people of Placer County. I am honored to take part in the Placer Artists Tour and look forward to meeting others with the same passion for meaningful art. I have been involved in a couple recent shows between here and San Francisco since moving to the area. and recently been designing and creating works of art for CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and even overseas royalty!”KAREN GLABAS, FUSED GLASS ARTIST #37“It’s a joyous experience connecting through art”. LAUREL MATHE #77We encourage you to donate to the Joanne K. 10PlacerArtistsTour.org Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsArtist will be doing a demoLINCOLN...Discover the Charm!Tour Artist Ray Gonzales has always been assured of his path as an artist. It’s always been clay for him! He grew up in Lincoln where the historic Gladding McBean terra-cotta factory is located. His grandfather worked at the factory and Ray grew up in the house his grandfather purchased with earnings from his job there. Currently closed to the public, Ray is still able to carve pipe inside the factory as a resident artist.Located in Lincoln, Gladding, McBean and Company has been in operation since 1875. Charles Gladding, along with Peter McGill McBean and George Chambers, established Gladding McBean and its original product was clay sewer pipe. By 1883, the company had grown to 75 employees, and it then evolved into a major manufacturer of architectural terra-cotta. Next year marks the 150th anniversary of this iconic factory with it’s generations of invention and innovation. With some of the world’s richest clay reserves, Gladding McBean is still the leader in terra-cotta products. Sophisticated technology is used today to create distinctive design elements but much of the decorative work is still done by hand. By using the past to design the future, Gladding McBean combines old-world craftsmanship with modern technology to re-create some of the world’s most famous building elements.Lincoln’s Legacy...FEATSof CLAYRegional Competition & ExhibitRay conceived of and chaired the National and then International Feats of Clay exhibit that drew artists from around the country as well as the world. The key idea was to house a dynamic, contemporary exhibit INSIDE one of the huge, 35 feet in diameter beehive kilns! This past spring Ray again organized several dozen sculptors again for the 35th annual Clayfest carving in Lincoln. “Gladding McBean supplied the materials and has been hugely instrumental in all the community events I’ve been in charge of. I owe them a great debt of gratitude and I am honored and humbled to be carrying on my grandfather’s work in clay as well as having my own son, Gabriel Isaiah Gonzales, as a 3rd generation ceramic artist, join me and work alongside me in our family’s connection to Gladding McBean”. - RAY GONZALESFeats of Clay, international clay competition was revitalized this year as a regional show with the help of Ray Gonzales and The Art League of Lincoln. Plans are in the works to return next year to the National stage.Visit Ray Gonzales in Lincoln: Location #4

12PlacerArtistsTour.org Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsIt’s SATSUMA MANDARIN SEASON in the Sierra Foothills of Placer County from November through January! Discover small farms down country roads primarily in Penryn, Newcastle, Loomis and Lincoln. It’s the perfect time to pick up a bag as you travel on the Placer Artists Tour. Currently there are over 80 Mandarin Growers in Placer County but small farms have been providing tree-ripened, hand-picked Mandarins since the 1880s. The climate for farms located “above the fog and below the snow” oers warm days and cool nights ideal for growing the fruit.A major supporter of local artists, Joanne Neft, along with the Newcastle Business Association founded the Mountain Mandarin Festival in 1994. Mandarins have since been promoted as “the Gold of the Foothills”.Mandarins are a dierent species from oranges. There are up to 200 varieties and hybrids of mandarins around the world, including tangerines and clemen-tines. Placer County specializes in Satsuma Mandarins which are small, seed-less, easy to peel and fragile. They boast many impressive nutrients, such as vitamin C and ber, which are associated with improved immune function and gut health. They are best picked right o the tree and can be found at Farmers Markets, Farm Trails, Specialty Markets such as Newcastle Produce and at the Mountain Mandarin Festival. Store them at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Either way, they make a convenient, tasty, and nutritious snack!ALLISON ARMSTRONG “Mandarins”Location: #22Good as Gold!

13 Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsPlacerArtistsTour.orgWhen we hear the word “recycle” most of us think of our own home and how to properly dispose of paper, glass and aluminum. What if there were a more creative way to re-use and re-purpose some of those items into beautiful and unique pieces of art?Placer Artists Tour will re-introduce OUTSIDE THE BOX in the spring of 2025! This re-imagined event will invite 100 artists to create a piece of art solely out of recycled materials and showcase their work for the public to view and purchase. Tour sponsor, RECREATE, will oer materials for artists to reuse for this project. They are committed to reducing waste in our community – and inspiring others to do the same – through art, education, and imagination. Placer Artists Tour has several artists that creatively use all types of recycled materials to create their art while helping to reduce the amount of waste in the world!“As an artist and a conservationist, my work focuses on revering elements of the natural world and creating pieces that embody the simultaneous complexity and simplicity of nature. My medium in this collection is salvaged fallen trees I have collected myself locally in the woods, which I transform into mirrors, earrings and other items with very little environmental footprint.” CHRISTY CLAES #75“Change is the only guarantee in daily life. My work reects dismantling, restructuring, and re-birthing as we navigate social and natural change cycles. I transform ordinary, unwanted objects into statements of our integration and dependence with the natural world, our connections with the unseen parts of ourselves, and our relationships. I inspire people to open their hearts and minds with curiosity and hope.” SUE BORDELON #25“I use 20 gauge Hex Mesh Wire to create my Artwork. I mold and stretch the wire mesh by hand. Each piece takes on character as they evolve through the creative process. Animals with feathers, ns and fur, or mane can appear to ow and give a sense of enchantment or action. I add wood bases, crystals, beads and screen material to give denition and details to many of my pieces.” KRISTY ROBERTS #8RECOLOGY’S MISSION IS A WORLD WITHOUT WASTE. Whenever possible, Recology uses recycled materials to build and maintain each of their oces. JENNIFER JOHNSON #56 as an “artist in residence” created a series of steel and glass counters throughout the Auburn oce. She also created a dining table and lined the women’s restroom with renewable steel along with several sculptures. Jennifer is still allowed to recover items from their waste pile for her art. Her sculpture garden should be part of your plan for the Tour!Recycle & Reuse!THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX! 31st Annual2024

We encourage each other and champion one another through rough studio times. It is also especially rewarding and worthwhile when younger tour members visit and information and guidance is shared. This is how it worked for me all those years ago. The support of fellow artists made it possible to enjoy each tour year and grow alongside each other in a common art goal, that of getting our work out there. I’m forever grateful for making so many art connections both within the tour and the public, some of whom are now my very valued patrons.Thank you to the tour organizers who do a sterling job each year.”Mya Louw Diedre Trudeau • Michael MurphyDavid Corey • Bill SimpsonHONORING OUR VETERANSWe wouldn’t be free to create without you!THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

Joining local art with music at the Symphony”. Art in the Park has been a most beautiful integration of the visual and performing arts. Strolling through live art exhibits with the chance to chat with the artists while hearing the strains of classical music in a park in the heart of Auburn is a great family event - and it’s free to all! We work together to choose local artist’s work to represent each concert all season and use this artwork on all of our marketing materials, promoting the beautiful artwork that is created in our midst. We recognize our donors in a joint gratitude celebration and bring together those members of the community who are able to support us nancially, ensuring there will be access to the arts for everyone in Auburn for years to come. Look for our Auburn Symphony musicians at dierent locations each day of the Tour, we’d love to have you stop by and listen up close to these incredibly talented musicians.” – ANNE BROWN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTORArt in e Pk

However you plan your landscaping, it is a reection of who you are. Gardens can be quiet places of refuge or full of vibrant colors expressing energy.Art is important to consider in your landscape design. With the ever changing seasons and evolving life cycles of plants, art can add a sense of structure. In our climate, art can live outside year round. When adding art to your garden think about how it enhances your design and how it makes your garden more interesting. Most importantly, does it bring you joy? You will know the art feels good when you have found the perfect place. A large work of art or art of contrasting color can add a focal point by drawing your eye to it. The piece will draw the viewer closer where they can then explore the details. The surrounding plants add to the sense of texture and color and can either blend in or add contrast to the garden artwork. Or you can hide smaller surprises among the plants that are fun to discover. In the garden you can be bold in your choices!Painting, sculpture, welding, ceramics and glass are all mediums that can be added to your garden and can all be found on the Placer Ar tists Tour.A in  OutdrsA in  Outdrs“In  last w ars I ha rerd  sculpral rk making ps bad  Japa s lanrns   garn inspired by my ip  Japan. 35 Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsPlacerArtistsTour.orgAUBURN...Explore the Gold Country! It all starts with the Color WheelTo create a pleasing piece of art or interior design, colors must work together to positively inuence our emotions and perceptions. The color wheel was designed as a tool to organize and harmonize the mixing of colors together to create additional colors, shades and hues. Color Theory starts with the 3 primary colors: Red, Yellow and Blue. When combinations of these three are mixed together, they become the secondary and tertiary colors. Within these color mixes, warm and cool colors are made to create an emotional and psychological experience of a piece of art or a space you walk into. Warm colors are generally associated with brightness, optimism and energy whereas cool colors have a sense of calm, serenity and peacefulness. The next time you view a piece of art, ask yourself what emotions are invoked within you and how it makes you feel? What is Color Theory?SUSAN BERG “Browsers” Location #2

Many of the libraries have found civic, historic and other creative reuse over time. The Auburn Carnegie Library was once home to an innovative artist-in-residence program known as OLAS, the Old Library Art Studios, developed by the Arts Council of Placer County in cooperation with the City of Auburn. Needing much repair and upgrades, the building sat vacant for a number of years until a dedicated group of volunteers began working with the city and the community to develop a vision and a nancing plan to create a center for the arts, culture, education and community events in the heart of Auburn. A non-prot organization, Almost Free to All, has been formed to lead the transformation. The name comes from the Carnegie motto above the library’s doors “Free to All”. The building is now called Branches at the Carnegie, with the mission to provide space at the most aordable rate possible to people who want to create, perform, teach, discuss, plan and gather to enrich our community. The building oers a variety of indoor spaces and a newly rehabilitated garden which will provide various rental opportunities. To follow the progress of the library’s transformation, please visit:BranchesAtTheCarnegie.com.

Exposure, focus and timing are tools of the trade. Creative expression is what makes the image unique. What mood does the image convey?Fourteen participating photographers from this year’s Tour were asked what they think are the primary components of a good photo. Responses included the importance of composition, leading lines, lighting, clarity, tone, and color. Every technical decision lends itself to the creativity of the resulting image. The photographer’s artistic vision brings life to the image.“A good photo, in my opinion, is one that evokes a strong emotional response from its viewers. Emotion is the essence that transforms a simple image into a powerful visual narrative. I think elements such as composition, color, motion, and a photographer’s use of lighting all help convey this. I believe that together, these elements work harmoniously to create photos that do more than just capture a moment – they tell a story, evoke emotions, and leave a lasting impression on the viewer.”DAVID COREY, LOCATION #29Come meet the photographers ON the Tour!Photography as a Medium for Creative ExpressionDAVID COREY, LOCATION #29

48PlacerArtistsTour.org Open First Weekend Open Both WeekendsAUBURN...Explore the Gold Country!Art Can Heal is an art program at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital which was created to enhance the healing environment for patients, their families & sta by displaying positive & uplifting work by local and regional artists & photographers. The history goes back 37 years when members of Placer Artists League, a visual artists network for local and emerging artists, came up with the idea of bringing art to display at the hospital. Janet Nicholson, an accomplished artist, was pregnant with her rst child, and was looking for a hospital where she could safely deliver her baby. Janet came across Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital and oered to help with the new Art Can Heal program. Janet Nicholson, along with Pam Johnson, Professor of Applied Art & Design at Sierra College, helped jury and hang the artwork. That’s how the Art Can Heal program was established at Auburn Faith. There were many art shows over the years at the hospital that created a positive impact and beautiful visual experience for the patients, their families and employees of the hospital. Laurie Barrow, a children’s book illustrator, who recently retired, managed this project for over twenty years. Now two artists, a physician, Dr. Tatiana Korshunova and an ICU nurse, Kelly Gagnie, who work at the hospital, took over the task of running the “Art Can Heal” program. There are ve galleries at the hospital that display over sixty pieces of art at a time, including a children’s gallery. On display you can see paintings by local artists, photographs of nature, birds, still lifes, as well as art creations by employees of the hospital. Patients nd the artwork calming and inspiring.Art Can HealAUBURN SUTTER FAITH HOSPITAL MEDICAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE“The arts can transform you like nothing else. They can help move you from sickness to health, stress to calm, or sadness to joy, and they enable you to ourish and thrive,” – SUSAN MAGSAMEN AND IVY ROSS, Your Brain on ArtProud to support the Tour!

Ten artists received stipends for art supplies so you may have an opportunity to explore materials along the way.Since 1997, The Sugar Plump Fairies have been delighting the Greater Auburn, California area with their philanthropic antics. Drawing attention to themselves for worthy causes is their calling.Through creativity, silliness, and “fun-raising,” the Sugar Plump Fairies seek to inspire the generosity of others to provide the youth of the Auburn area with greater access to the Arts, in all its forms. The Sugar Plump Fairies use performance art and creativity to support good works in the community. “We believe that the arts can open minds, provide inspiration, connect people across cultural, racial, and class boundaries, and generally enhance the quality of life for individuals and our community.”You might see some Fairies out and about on the Tour! So join the action and create!AUBURN Locations 40 – 68THE IMPACT OF ARTAmerica for the Arts, founded in 1960, is the nation’s leading nonprot organization for advancing the arts and arts education. Surveys are taken nationally at cultural events – 86% of those surveyed in Placer County said arts and culture is important to their community’s quality of life and livability.Arts and culture is more than food for the soul. It also puts food on the table for millions of people – including Placer County. The very act of creating, presenting, exhibiting, and engaging has a positive economic impact on the community. When we support the arts, we are investing in both Placer County’s economic and community well being.

My journey as both a mother and an artist intertwines, shaping me into a source of inspiration for young creatives seeking to nd their voice in a world waiting to hear their stories.” TIFFANY WAUGH #9“I would wake at 4:00am and paint until 7:00 every morning. I called it ‘The Morning Work’, and it quickly became The Work I treasured most in my sched-ule. Over the next ten years, The Morning Work became the momentum for not only my own growth as an artist, but the work that I now do with The Crocker Art Museum, teaching art classes with children at schools, and working weekly with thirty-two children in my studio setting in downtown Auburn.” DANA ROSS #41“It is also important to me to give back to my community and engage with other artists. I am currently sharing my passion for the arts by teaching art classes to seniors and encouraging victims of violence to nd healing through making art.” MARY PIVETTI #64“As an artist I hope to pass along the world of pastel painting through my art and teaching others through art classes. I nd it rewarding to be the rst to introduce a beginner to pastels, and both rewarding and challenging when I have the opportunity to work alongside the experienced painter.” JAN MILLER #39Are you curious yet?
