THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2024 29W - WorkshopH640 Masterclass for Preparing Clay Bole for Traditional Water Gilding Sunday, February 4, 20249:00 AM - 12:00 PMCharles Douglas Getting brush marks in your clay? Still unsure about the right consistency of your bole? Clay bole, the silky-smooth clay com-prised of aluminum silicate and iron oxide and applied to the surface of the gilder’s gesso, plays an integral role in traditional water gilding, from providing a cushion for burnishing the gold leaf to offering a sym-pathetic color underneath the extraordinarily thin gold leaf. Proper preparation of the clay is essential in how the fi nal gilding appears. Too thick, and unsightly brush marks will appear under the gold; over-polishing the bole can result in poor adhesion of the gold leaf. Whether you’re an experienced gilder or currently studying the art of water gild-ing, this special lecture/demonstration will serve you well in developing a successful approach for working with clay bole for tra-ditional water gilding. Revive Art Restoration, grew up and worked in his father’s framing business, Gold Leaf Framemakers of Santa Fe. After college, he went on to work for some of the most prestigious conservation studios in the US—putting him in a unique position to understand the challenges of both framer and conservator. In this informative luncheon session, Matt will introduce you to a behind-the-scenes look at the world of art conservation. A custom picture framer is usually the fi rst person to evaluate art; therefore, they are the fi rst to discover its condition. Matt will show you how to evaluate art using examples of readily visible and subtle signs of damage. He will review condition reports, conservation terminol-ogy, and the best ways to communicate your fi ndings. You will learn how working with the right conservator will help build your framing business, and explore the differences between art restoration and art conservation. Matt will help you determine when to refer a job to a conservator, and when it might not be a good idea to proceed with a framing project.
