A Messagefrom our ChiefExecutiveAs we reflect on 2024, it has been a year ofremarkable growth, collaboration, and impact forMelanin Medics. Together, we have not only continuedto break down barriers to representation in medicinebut have also taken bold steps to empower futuremedical professionals and change-makers.This year, we proudly introduced new events like the AspiringMedics Conference and the Interview Webinar, which inspiredcountless aspiring medical students to pursue their dreamswith renewed passion. Through our mentoring programmesand community outreach, we have helped hundreds ofindividuals gain valuable insights, build meaningfulconnections, and navigate the complexities of medicaleducation and career progression.But our journey has not been without challenges. While wecelebrated successes, we also confronted the realities ofmanaging growth and ensuring sustainability. Despite thesehurdles, our commitment to fostering inclusivity, equity, andsupport for underrepresented groups within the medicalprofession has remained steadfast.I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of ourpartners, funders, volunteers, and, most importantly, thecommunities we serve. 2024 Focus AreasAt the beginning of 2024, Melanin Medics set outwith ambitious goals to refine our operations, expandour reach, and deepen our impact within the Blackmedical community. We are proud to reportsignificant progress across all our strategicobjectives, laying a strong foundation for futuregrowth.Rimberio PROJECT PROPOSAL10GOAL 1: Consistent, thorough evaluative practicesAchievement: In 2024, we meticulously reviewed our programme and eventevaluation methods, leading to the development of clear Key PerformanceIndicators (KPIs) for every area of our work, including programmes,communications, events, and research. To ensure our team was equipped for thisenhanced focus on impact, we provided dedicated training on impactmeasurement during our Team Away Day. This commitment to robust evaluationensures we can accurately track our progress and articulate our impact moreeffectively.GOAL 2: Increasing the number of donors throughfundraisingAchievement: We successfully launched our first fundraising campaign "7 for 7"campaign, encouraging the public to donate £7 to commemorate MelaninMedics' seven years of impact. This campaign attracted 17 new donors andraised £290. Overall, in 2024, we received approximately £490.72 in publicdonations, demonstrating growing community support for our mission.GOAL 3: Scaling deeper through community buildingAchievement: To achieve this, we strategically restructured our team, creating adedicated Engagement Team focused on both community and stakeholderengagement. This new structure introduced Outreach and Engagement Officersfor each of our core audiences: aspiring doctors, medical students, and qualifieddoctors. This targeted approach has been instrumental in shaping our 2025strategy, enabling us to deliver more tailored events, valuable resources, andunique opportunities that resonate specifically with the needs of each groupwithin our community.

Envision MedRimberio PROJECT PROPOSAL13We launched the 4 Cohort of the Envision Medprogramme. The Envision Med programme is a year-long mentoring programme for year 12 students ofBlack heritage who have aspirations to studyMedicine in the UK. The programme consists of 1-1mentoring, application support, interviewpreparation, soft skills webinars and academicsupracurricular webinars.thThis programme has beenextremely helpful, theonline sessions taught me alot and helped me build acompetitive medicineapplication. So much helpwas offered thoughout thetimeline of my application,from getting support todevelop my personalstatement to helping medevelop my interview skills,from my mentor as well asthe wider Melanin Medicsteam. Envision Research14The Envision Research Summer School is a hybrid summerprogramme for black young people aged 16-17, aimed atbuilding their skills and confidence to successfully pursuecareers in medicine and engage in scientific research. Theprogramme consisted of a 3-day virtual group researchproject, and an immersive experience at the University ofCambridge and Cambridge Institute for MedicalResearch. Participants worked with their team toresearch and understand healthinequalities that disproportionally affectthe black community such as prostatecancer, breast cancer, sickle cell diseaseand more. They then developed aninitiative to address the inequality. Theywere supported by experienced mentorsand connected with experts in the field.They will develop skills in research,problem-solving, and public speaking. I learned that you canengage in research during medical school. I learned thatthere are many more options after medical school, notjust specialising. EnrichmentWe delivered the 4 Cohort of the Enrichment Programmeto 33 participants. The Enrichment Programme is amentoring programme designed for final year medicalstudents of Black African and Caribbean heritage studyingMedicine in the UK. The programme aims to help Black finalyear medical students navigate their last year of medicalschool and help them thrive in the next phase of their life asdoctors. Attendees gained unparalleledinsights into successful medical school applications andinterview techniques through engaging workshops andinsightful talks led by our dedicated team and inspiringspeakers. This immersive experience equipped aspiring medicswith the knowledge and confidence needed tonavigate the competitive application process. This energetic evening broughttogether hundreds of Black healthcare professionalsand organisations, marking a significant moment forcross-continental connection. Melanin Medicsproudly shared our impactful work, connecting withtalented Black medical students and doctors, hearingtheir inspiring stories, and exchanging ideas forcommunity upliftment. Partnerships& Funding32Melanin Medics' ability to drive significant change andempower Black medical talent is profoundly amplified byour partners and funders. In 2024, we strengthened keycollaborations and diversified our income, ensuring thesustained delivery and growth of our vital programmes.We are incredibly grateful for major grant funding from the National Citizen Service (NCS)and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), which directly supportedour Envision Med and Envision Research Summer School programmes.Our strategic partnerships also brought invaluable in-kind contributions. St Catharine'sCollege, University of Cambridge, generously provided venue space for our EnvisionResearch Summer School's in-person day, the General Medical Council supported ourAspiring Medics Conference and the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England)supported our SurgIn Finale: The Surgeons Sit Down event with essential venue space.Beyond institutional support, the unwavering commitment of our community isfundamental. Our "7 for 7" campaign successfully engaged new donors. We alsogenerated income through our impactful Allyship & Advocacy workshops and ticketsales for our events.

33StakeholderEngagementMelanin Medics is deeply committed to driving systemicchange within the medical profession through targetedadvocacy and strategic stakeholder engagement. Ouradvocacy efforts focus on critical areas: widening access tomedical careers for aspiring Black students, supporting thecareer progression of Black medical students and doctors intraining, championing anti-racism in both undergraduateand postgraduate medical education, and actively workingto tackle health inequalities in medical practice.To amplify this advocacy, we actively engage with a diverse range of stakeholders. In2024, our engagement methods included event partnerships, speaking engagements,participation in advisory groups and stakeholder panels, campaign collaborations, andprogramme partnerships. We presented our work and contributed to virtual discussions,leveraging every opportunity to advance our mission.We forged crucial connections with key organisations such as: NHS Practitioner Health,General Medical Council, Royal Colleges (RCS England, RCS Edinburgh, RCOG), NHSEngland, Medical Schools Council, and DHSC. We also collaborated with academicinstitutions like NIHR and St Catharine's College Cambridge on Envision Research. Wealso partnered with Black Health Connect, and HEAL for Black People, alongsideprofessional bodies like the BMJ and BMA. These collaborations are essential, allowingus to influence policy, share best practices, and collectively work towards a trulyequitable and representative medical profession for the benefit of all.
