ANDREW joined Home Start’s Family Visitation Program in Summer 2024; he hadn’t had a relationship with his six-year-old daughter, Kayla, since she was an infant. He had decided it was time to step up and be a good father, but he was not sure how. With support from his Home Start Family Visit Coach, Andrew began learning how to rebuild trust and connect with his daughter. On recent morning, Kayla arrived to the supervised visit visibly upset and refused to leave the car. Instead of shutting down, Andrew put his new skills into action—speaking gently, rubbing her back, and o ering comfort without pushing. Kayla resisted, but Andrew patiently o ered options and validated her feelings. Eventually, she agreed to start the visit with a walk.Soon, a race around the parking lot turned into laughter, smiles, and connection. Andrew adapted to Kayla’s cues, encouraging her step by step with support from his Visit Coach. By the end of their visit, Kayla was sitting on her dad’s lap, asking questions, giving hugs, and saying “I love you” back to a father she was only just beginning to know. With each coached interaction, Andrew is becoming the safe, engaged parent his daughter deserves.Andrew is a client in Home Start’s Family Visitation Program6 | Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report

SANDY and her 5-year-old son, Brandon, received assistance from Home Start’s East County Housing Team this past winter. After months of living in their car they were able to transition from homelessness to hope by moving into a home of their own! Our team ensured the moment was special: waiting in the entryway was a brand-new tricycle, just for Brandon. It was more than a toy — it was a symbol of a fresh start. The very next day, when our Housing Manager, Rorie, visited, Brandon ran up beaming with excitement. Tugging at her pant leg, he exclaimed, “Guess what? We have nature here at my house!” For Brandon, even a small yard with a tree and a few plants felt like a world of wonder—a place where he and his mom could feel safe, grounded, and free.Because of your generous support, families like Sandy and Brandon’s are not only nding shelter, but a true sense of home and healing. Your donations help provide more than housing — they bring dignity, joy, and a future lled with possibility.Sandy is a client of Home Start’s Rapid Rehousing Programwww.home-start.org | 9

SAM was referred to Home Start’s Behavioral Health Services at four years old because he was experiencing deep trauma. After witnessing domestic violence and abuse in his home, Sam was su ering from intense separation anxiety, frequent nightmares, and inappropriate behaviors for his age. His mother, desperate to help her son heal, reached out for support.Home Start connected the family with a therapist trained in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), a proven, evidence-based approach to strengthening parent-child relationships and reducing behavioral issues. During weekly coaching sessions, Sam’s mother learned PRIDE skills—Praise, Refl ection, Imitation, Description, and Enjoyment—empowering her to connect with Sam through structured, positive interactions. As the therapy progressed into its next phase, focused on communication and consistent discipline strategies, Sam began to thrive. His mother reports that he now follows directions, acts out less at home, and no longer clings to her with fear when being dropped o at preschool. Most encouragingly, his nightmares have stopped.Sam and his mother are building a safer, more secure future together. I’m an MA graduate whose life circumstances led me to ask for government assistance. Due to the stigmatism associated with seeking government help, I did not want to apply for any relief, even when I was struggling a lot. I’m hardworking AND I have a degree, so I could not fathom not being able to ‘make it on my own.’ However, after many months of stress and tears, I visited Home Start, and after verifying my income and talking to them about my situation, they helped me apply for Cal-Fresh. Throughout the process, they made me feel like a human, and not a failure for seeking assistance. They guided me throughout the process, and they made me feel less alone and more optimistic. — Alejandra18 | Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report1,244+individuals received outreach and education regarding CalFresh552individual renewals and new enrollments were completedCALFRESH PROGRAMOur CalFreshprogram provides bene ts enrollment assistance for students, individuals & families to access healthy, nutritious food.“
