She is a former U.S. Naval Ocer and also worked in Washington D.C. until she retired. She had never painted until she moved to Olympia, when during the rainiest winter on record, she took a Watercolor 101 Painting class at a local high school. “I just wanted to get out of the house”, she recalls. The rest is history. In the right circumstances, CFLT can help landowners acquire compensation for permanently removing development rights from their farm property and for accepting a permanent farming requirement on the land. The Community Farm Land Trust works with the owner to steward the farmland. The 2024 Fresh From the Farm Guide signies the end of our long drippy winter and the start to a new spring season of possibilities. When you see the guide popping up in libraries, markets, and local businesses, we hope that you share in our excitement! We are always working to improve our publication. Thanks to our Farmer Sponsor, Puget Sound Energy, we were able to oer all our farmers free listings this year! The goal of this partnership was to lift economic barriers that farmers face; whether they are starting a new business or they have large equipment expenses looming, removing the cost of listings is one small thing we can do. Shining a light on our farmers' voices was also a priority this year. Every farm spotlight in the guide has been written by our farmers/ranchers. Enjoy the histories, stories, and successes of some of the hardest working people in our region. We can all learn from their experiences on the farm. This year, we connected with the Olympia Art League and South Sound Urban Sketchers to help bring vibrancy to our cover. We had a lot of great art submissions and hope to continue our partnership with these talented artists. If you are a farmer that would like to connect or host local artists on the farm, please contact Jeanine@communityfarmlandtrust.org. Don’t miss the most recent agricultural census data released by USDA. You can nd these new stats with Dug as you turn the pages. We are pleased to highlight the Farm to Food Pantry program this year on pages 26-27. Learn more about how farmers are bridging the gap to our local food banks and supplying more fresh, nutrient-dense food to lower income individuals and families. There are many opportunities to give generously to our mission of preserving farmland throughout the year; join our board, become a volunteer, or contribute nancially. Mark your calendars and get involved with CFLT events this year. For a list of our 2024 events, see page 7. In the meantime, grab a guide, support your local farmers, visit regional farmers markets, and join us in celebrating our abundant local food system! AgWest Farm Credit is an agricultural lending cooperative with more than a century of experience serving farmers and ranchers throughout the West. From the smallest operations to the largest – and everything in between – we champion agriculture by providing consistent, reliable credit and nancial services. As a trusted resource, we share our knowledge and nancial acumen to help producers build strong, thriving businesses that last generations. Helping young, beginning, and small (YBS) producers is an integral part of AgWest’s cooperative mission. We know starting and growing a business can feel overwhelming sometimes. That’s why we oer specialized nancing and educational support through our AgVision TM program. This program is specically designed for producers with at least one of the following characteristics: • 35 years of age or younger• 10 years or less experience in agriculture• Annual gross farm production of less than $350,000The AgVision program provides nancing for real estate purchases, operating expenses, equipment, livestock purchases and more with: Grounded by tradition. Inspired by possibility.• Flexible loan underwriting standards• Competitive interest rates• Reduced or waived fees• Down payment assistance and start-up capital options• Knowledgeable sta focused exclusively on nancing agricultureWe also help YBS producers develop strong nancial and business management skills through educational benets and resources to help them build business plans, prepare nancial statements, and plan for farm business succession. Through our RateWiseTM program, YBS producers can earn interest rate reductions on an AgWest loan or operating line of credit by enhancing their management and production skills. It’s simple. RateWise credits are earned by participating in educational programs oered by: • AgWest’s Business Management Center• University and industry groups• Other learning resources to improve management and production skillsYBS producers are eligible to submit a request for an interest rate reduction once enough credits have been accumulated. And rate reductions increase with the number of credits earned. The RateWise program is available to YBS producers who are not yet AgWest customers but are interested in future nancing with us. As a customer-owned cooperative, AgWest prots are returned to eligible customer-members as cash patronage dividends, which signicantly reduces their total borrowing costs. The AgWest Board of Directors’ objective is to pay cash patronage annually at 1.25% of a customer’s eligible average daily loan balance. So hypothetically, if a farmer secures a loan at 7% interest, the net cost would be 5.75% after factoring in the 1.25% patronage dividend. This is a unique benet we’re extremely proud to oer our customer-members.Our stewardship programs include robust scholarship opportunities, grants for new producers, and for non-prot organizations that are serving those in rural communities. AgWest employees are equally committed to our communities by investing thousands of volunteer hours each year. Giving back to the people and organizations that help our communities thrive is a core value at AgWest. Just as farmers and ranchers have been entrusted as stewards of the land, AgWest has the same responsibility – to enhance the rural communities where we live, work, and play. For more information scan the QR code or visit AgWestFC.comSponsor SpotlightAgWest Farm CreditPhoto courtesy of Red Dog Farm Photo courtesy of Wild Hare Organic Farm Photo courtesy of Viva Farms102024 Fresh From The Farm GuideProtecting Farmland ForeverCommunity Farm Land Trust

Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food-insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Food insecurity may reect a household’s need to make trade-os between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.Food Insecurity & Farm to Food PantryIt’s estimated 197,845 people (31% of our state’s food insecure population) are above the poverty thresholds of SNAP, WIC, & other nutrition programs, thus DON’T qualify for food assistance.8.5% of Washington State is food insecure. That is 638,210 people.Food Insecurity denition and data is from: feedingamerica.org, and map.feedingamerica .org/county/2020/overall/washingtoncommunityfarmlandtrust.orgOnly 13% of WA residents meet the recommended daily intake of fruit* and only 11% meet their daily vegetable* intake. What is Food What is Food Insecurity?Insecurity? The Farm to Food pantry (F2FP) initiative helps bridge the gap between hunger relief agencies and farmers through relationship building and direct farm purchasing. The initiative is one strategy WSDA employs to increase lower-income individuals' access to nutritious and fresh local produce, while providing an economic lifeline that can help small to midsize farmers thrive. (F2FP Annual Report, 2020)"We have no other source of fresh produce for those customers who rely heavily on our food bank." — Feedback from a local food pantry. Whether they are purchasing our vegetables through their Farm to Food Pantry Program or distributing our donations, we can count on them to help share nourishing food with our community."— Angie, Helsing Junction FarmThurston County Food Bank (TCFB) is proud to have partnered with the WSDA's Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP) since 2021, helping us to meet clients needs for produce while supporting our local farming community. Produce tends to be one of the items our pantries are most short on and at the same time, is highly valued by TCFB clients. F2FP funding has allowed us to increase product availability for our clients where it matters most; more fresh produce, produce availability in the o-season, and culturally-signicant food for clients. F2FP funding also allows us to prioritize supporting BIPOC, Veteran, LGBTQ+, Disabled, and Women-led farms. Our rst farm purchases were made from farms that we have partnered with for our Gleaning Program, allowing us to return the support they have given TCFB through donated produce over the years. Now, we have seventeen farm partners across Thurston, Lewis, Mason, Kitsap, King, and Skagit County. TCFB is able to support the farms through purchasing food and in turn, the farms support us through increased donations and gleaning opportunities. If you are a farmer who is interested in selling or donating produce to TCFB, please contact Mackenzie McCall at MackenzieM@tcfg.org.17% of income to the farmer came from F2FP contracts. *“We get to try veggies (what we call “freshies”) we've never tried before! Grays Harbor County Farm SpotlightMonte and I, Loni Hooper, began selling at Pike Place Market and other farmers markets over 35 years ago. We wanted to live closer to the coast on a level piece of land that was easily accessible to the public for selling our plants and owers. In early 1998, we bought our property located between Aberdeen and Westport on Highway 105 and started Lily Lane Farm selling bulbs, plants, and owers from a roadside stand. Each year we slowly developed the land to expand our operation and our oerings. The focus was on diversifying the varieties of daylilies we grew and increasing the amount of other perennials, vegetables, bouquets, and U-Pick owers. We currently have over 300 varieties of daylilies and believe it is the widest selection of daylilies of any commercial grower in Washington. A few years ago, Monte started hybridizing daylilies. Each year he introduces some of his own varieties which have included 'Westport Sunset', 'Rued Eggplant', and 'Ruby Gemstone'. Even though our main business has been growing and selling daylilies and cut owers, I have always loved providing and selling fresh produce. Growing on the coast certainly has its challenges. After much trial and error (and crop failures!), I have been able to nd varieties of vegetables and fruits that grow well here. Over the past 20 years living and growing on the coast, we’ve learned so many tips and tricks that it was time to share them. In the spring of 2023, I began teaching workshops on how to grow a successful garden on the Washington coast. In my workshops I provide seeds and starts of the varieties that are easy to grow and that tolerate coastal climates. With the revival of victory gardens, interest in sustainable living and growing your own food increased. My goal is to teach about how to have a vegetable garden that is less frustrating, more successful, and provides family and friends with quality, chemical-free, and nutritious food. We use organic methods, 2024 Fresh From The Farm Guidecommunityfarmlandtrust.orgSee farm listing #6.Photos courtesy of Lily Lane Farmdepend on several types of owers and plants to attract pollinators, and intercrop plant varieties to handle pest control. Our goal is to cultivate a wide variety of plants that serve dierent purposes, including edible plants, owers for bouquets, pollinator-friendly species, and those that improve soil health (like nitrogen-xing plants or cover crops). We take great pride in the fact that we only sell what we grow. We do not buy from out-of-the-area wholesalers or resell owers grown by others. With the support of our customers and mostly word-of-mouth advertising, we have gradually grown from a roadside stand to having a shop for the hundreds of daylilies, perennials, U-pick owers we grow, and produce from our vegetable and fruit gardens. Many of our customers bring us vases and their recyclable containers, thereby keeping our costs and waste to a minimum. This allows us to continue to provide great products at an aordable price.Lily Lane FarmBy Loni Hoopercommunityfarmlandtrust.org34

Coee Creek was founded in 2009 as a collaborative community and education-based farm with a focus on food justice, specialty poultry, pastured pork and lamb, and seasonal veggies. Mokey Skinner believes that “growing farmers'' is every bit as important as growing delicious and nutritious food. They have hosted volunteers from Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), oer regular hours for volunteers, workshops, and skill sharing for over 13 years. People are invited to get dirty and experience the challenges and joys of farming rst hand while tending to their relationships with nature. Connecting people to land-based life skills can vary greatly from day to day and from season to season. Coee Creek consistently serves the local community with high quality eggs, meat, and vegetables in unique ways that are easily tailored to suit cultural and personal needs. Thanks to WSDA’s Local Food Infrastructure Grant, Coee Creek is home to a state of the art poultry processing facility. Their team is available for hire by small farms and homesteaders who don’t have the equipment or the experience to harvest at home. By sharing this resource, Coee Creek is able to incrementally update and upgrade the facility, expand sales channels, and reach more customers with lovingly and naturally grown meat and poultry.Pastured turkeys sold out once again in November 2023. Mokey recommends that deposits be placed to reserve bird(s) before July 2024, when they start the brooding process. Bulk broiler chickens and Pekin ducks are available two to four times a year to ll your freezer seasonally and always have a beautiful bird on hand to roast or grill. Bulk pork and lamb shares are available each fall. Meat shares are available monthly all year. Coee Creek egg subscriptions are one way for customers to commit to farm fresh and local. Riverbird FarmRiverbird Farm specializes in pasture-raised poultry. Our farming practices are grounded in deep respect for the animals we raise, the land we steward, and the community we serve. We are a small, first-generation farm in Shelton, WA, established in 2021 by Henry Schmidt, Jo Perez, Will Smythe, and Maia Erickson. We currently offer our products through a seasonal CSA program, regional home delivery, Olympia and Tacoma farmers markets, and partnerships with local restaurants. Our goal is to provide the highest quality food to our community. A core practice of our farming is rotational pasture management. Our birds are raised in open-bottom field enclosures which we move around the pasture by hand every single day, making sure the birds get onto fresh ground each morning. This approach is labor-intensive but we choose to farm this way because it ensures that our flock is healthy and active. It is also vital to the health of our pasture since the daily moves help distribute the flock’s impact evenly around the field. In addition to what they forage outside, we supply our birds with a freshly milled, Washington-grown feed mix that is corn-free, soy-free, and not genetically modified. Ultimately, we raise our birds on pasture so that they have access to fresh air, real grass, dirt, grubs, and other insects — the way we think it should be. Riverbird Farm is unique because we offer our poultry for sale fresh in addition to frozen throughout our season. We do this by processing and packing every week from May to October. This is also labor-intensive, but it ensures an extra level of quality that we are proud to provide to our customers. As a team of four, we are each involved in every aspect of raising our birds — from nurturing day-old chicks, to daily chores, to processing and packaging. Our commitment to quality is reflected through our hands-on involvement in every aspect of our farm process, ensuring that we bring all of our Mason County Farm Spotlight2024 Fresh From The Farm Guidecommunity farmlandtrust.orgPhotos courtesy of Riverbird FarmSee farm listing #39.Lynch Creek FarmU-PICK DAHLIA FIELD We will be open from early August to October while dahlias are inbloom. “I believe in the future of agriculture with a faith born not of words, but of deeds.” This quote from the Future Farmers of America (FFA ) creed speaks to the essence of Tracking Y Ranch, our family, our commitment to agriculture, and our customers. We are a true rst-generation cattle ranch headquartered just south of Tumwater. It ocially started in 2015. Following years of managing and working on ranches in multiple states, we received a call in 2015 to purchase a cattle herd from a longtime friend, whose family property had been sold and would be removed from agriculture use. Taking a leap of faith, we quickly dedicated our goals and vision around raising beef for local purchase through the use of Prescribed Conservation Grazing.*Today we manage and graze over 525 leased acres in Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, and Lewis Counties. We operate a cow-calf** to nish operation with the majority of our cattle being owned throughout the entire production process. As customer demand has outpaced our cow herd, we purchase the remainder of our cattle from family-owned operations in the greater Thurston County area, to ensure the safest, best tasting beef for our customers. None of our cattle receive hormones to increase growth, and all our cattle stay on pasture throughout their entire lives (never going to a feedlot) to ensure they are raised as we believe they were intended. We oer both grass fed/grass nished beef (who never are given any grain their entire lives), as well as grass fed/grain nished beef (who are supplemented with locally sourced grain for the last 60 days prior to harvest). All of our grazing is done on leased pastures, with two-thirds of our properties having conservation easements or working towards it. The majority of our operation is focused on “Prescribed Conservation Grazing." *This means customizing the grazing season and number of animals per acre, targeting specic species of weeds/grasses through grazing, and ensuring our herd is rotated approximately every three days. We are able to use grazing as a tool to manage endangered/threatened species and plants such as the Oregon Spotted Frog, Mazama Thurston County Farm Spotlight2024 Fresh From The Farm GuideTracking Y RanchTracking Y RanchSee farm listing #105. 360-352-7707 • TrackingYRanch@gmail.com @trackingyranch • @Tracking Y RanchTracking RanchGrass or Grain Finished Local Quality Grass Fed BeefPocket Gopher, and Camas. Threats of wildre are reduced and we are helping to control invasive species like Rattail Fescue and Reed Canary Grass. When purchasing beef directly from family owned and operated businesses like our own, you purchase responsibly raised beef, provide safe food for your family, and support the conservation work we do. Customers report that knowing where their beef comes from, how it was raised, and the amazing taste of locally raised beef, and ensuring agriculture stays viable in our communities, is what it is all about. It's our goal to one day own our own property, but with development and the loss of agricultural land in the By The Yancy Family** "A cow-calf to nish operation, means that we own the majority of our cattle throughout the entire production process, which allows us to know how they're raised, what they've eaten, and even any medications they have needed." — Jake Yancygreater Thurston County area, as well as nationwide, the uphill battle is real.
