Join us in protecting birds and inspiring the next generation of conservationists.Environment for the AmericasWORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY: EFTA launched in 2008 to serve as the home of this global celebration of birds, with a focus on their migrations in the Americas. Since then, we have developed connections across borders and now support over 700 programs and events from Canada to Argentina and the Caribbean. Our collaborations extend around the world, and working in partnership with the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species, the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement, and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership, our work touches almost every yway. INTERNSHIPS: Since 2010, EFTA has developed skill-building experiences for underrepresented early career professionals. In partnership with federal and other non-prot organizations, we provide meaningful experiences that may lead to careers in conservation, research, science communications, and more. Today, we guide and mentor as many as 200 participants each year who work on national forests, at national parks, and on other public lands. RESEARCH: We are dedicated to protecting birds and are striving to uncover some of the causes of bird population declines, with a focus on western migratory hummingbirds. We are also learning how to better use technology to explore the habitats bird use and how we can better manage them. Excitingly, our eorts now extend to tracking the Monarch buttery’s migratory journey from Texas to Minnesota, marking our rst venture into non-avian species conservation.EDUCATION & OUTREACH: Every year we create new education materials, oer virtual and in-person trainings and workshops, and present our work at conferences, meetings, and public events. Our monthly Bird Book Club shares the writings of authors who are passionate about birds, conservation, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Locally and virtually, our programs connect people to birds through festivals, events, and other community programs. Help support our work across the Americas. Your membership fee entitles you to our quarterly newsletter, Call Notes, discounts in our shop, and invitations to in-person and virtual events. An annual membership is just $40! 3migratorybirdday.orgWorld Migratory Bird DayWorld Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) celebrates and brings attention to one of the most important and spectacular events around the globe, bird migration. Environment for the Americas coordinates WMBD across the Americas, and it is celebrated in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean at protected areas, refuges, parks, museums, schools, zoos, and more. More than 700 events and programs hosted annually introduce the public to migratory birds and ways to conserve them.Protect Insects, Protect BirdsEach year, World Migratory Bird Day highlights a critical conservation issue impacting migratory birds. This year, we turn our attention to insects, and, for the rst time, the annual poster includes animals other than birds under the slogan Protect Insects, Protect Birds. If you aren’t a “bug lover,” we hope that this theme will improve your relationship with them. From their larval stages to ying adults, insects provide an essential source of nutrition and energy for many migratory birds. Hummingbirds depend on insects in their diets as adults, and as food for growing nestlings. Other species, such as Cli Swallows, survive solely on insects, capturing them in aerial feats. American Kestrels capture insects on the ground and in the air, in addition to foraging for small mammals. Insects that live in water are a favorite of Wood Ducks, and shorebirds hunt for insect larvae in the sand. Some migratory birds may time their journeys in synchrony with the presence of insects, seeking the insects found in the foliage of trees and other plants to help them refuel along the way. The loss and disturbance of insect populations at breeding sites and along migration routes threaten bird survival and condition. Insect populations are declining for many reasons, including loss of habitat, the impacts of light pollution, and the use of chemicals at home, in our communities, and on crops. Simultaneously, birds such as hummingbirds, American Kestrels, and certain swallows, reliant on insects, are also declining, possibly linked to the diminishing availability of their food source.Photo by Linda Tanner, creativecommons.orgAmerican Kestrel, a 2024 focal species, is a small falcon whose diet includes insects, such as grasshoppers. Its populations are declining, and researchers are concerned that parallel declines in insect populations are part of the problem.

4migratorybirdday.orgWhen is WMBD?World Migratory Bird Day is not just a day. It’s a year-long celebration! Birds migrate at dierent times in dierent regions, and this campaign is designed to reect that. Although the traditional dates are the second Saturdays of May and October (May 11 and October 12 in 2024), we encourage you to host your event when it best suits you and when participants are most likely to see birds. How to Protect Insects for BirdsCreate bug-friendly spaces by transforming lawns into natural bug homes. Insects prefer plants that are native to your area and need cover to survive. These plants are accustomed to the local weather and provide a good habitat for bugs.Don’t rake! Create a thriving ecosystem for insects and birds by leaving leaves in your garden or yard. The leaf litter acts as a natural shelter, food source, and breeding ground for various insect species. The decaying leaves also attract insects that are essential for insectivorous birds’ diets, promoting biodiversity and ecological balance. By refraining from raking leaves, you contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for both insects and birds.Reduce the use of pesticides that harm benecial insects. Instead, explore alternative methods to deter unwanted insects without resorting to harmful chemicals. Plant owers and herbs with natural pest-repellent properties. Use feeders and birdhouses to bring in birds that will help control garden pests. Consider utilizing organic fertilizers, essential oils, and biodegradable ingredients as ecient and environmentally friendly insecticides.Turn o extra lights at night because too much light can be bad for insects. Bugs are attracted to lights, and it can tire them out or expose them to other animals. Reduce the amount of light, and shield bulbs.Keep water clean by using eco-friendly soaps and cleaners. Some cleaning products and salts can be harmful to insects if they get into the water. Appreciate insects for the good things they do, like pollinating plants and being part of the food chain. Share positive pictures and stories about bugs with your family and neighbors and on social media to help others learn their importance.Teach your friends and family about the signicance of insects, especially kids. Support programs that educate people about insects and speak up for conservation in your community. Make sure rules about lawns and pesticides protect insects and get involved locally to support decisions that protect natural habitats, insects, and other wildlife.2024 Artist: Anna RoseAnna is a dedicated artist with a deep connection to wildlife. Her talent has been recognized with the Susan K. Black Foundation Scholarship three times. Anna pursued graduate studies at Ohio State University, where her research centered on the nesting ecology of warblers and thrushes, integrating her enthusiasm for both art and science. She was selected as the WMBD artist because of her ability to beautifully illustrate both birds and insects.Anna has an impressive list of accolades, from winning scholarships to being named Student Artist of the Year by the American Birding Association. She has also designed logos for the Ohio Bluebird Society and won rst place in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
