For many who step through the gates of Camp Ondessonk, the experience is transformative. But for Peggy Hausmann, Camp Ondessonkhas been a lifelong journey - a place that shaped her childhood, became a cherished second home, and continues to be a source of joy andpurpose through her unwavering volunteerism. A Connection Rooted in Adventure Peggy’s journey with Camp Ondessonk began, fittingly, with a childhood desire for adventure. “I havealways been sort of a tomboy,” she recalls. “The idea of camping out was always appealing to me.” Her first exposure to Camp came througha neighbor who shared stories of her own summer at Ondessonk, sparking a curiosity that never faded. Although she had to delay her firstvisit due to a tonsillectomy, Peggy’s excitement only grew. When she finally arrived, she packed her belongings in her mother’s collegesuitcase and her uncle’s old seabag - unconventional gear that foreshadowed the resourcefulness and adaptability she would bring to heryears of volunteering. Peggy Hausmann: A Lifelong Dedication to Camp Ondessonk A Moment That Defines the Spirit of Volunteering Among the many momentsthat define her time at Camp, one in particular stands out. A few summersago, she was approached by a senior camper who wanted to learn anadvanced eight-braid double spiral stitch. When she saw his hand - missingthree middle fingers - she hesitated but never backed down from thechallenge. “I told him I was willing to try, and if he worked with me, I wouldwork with him,” she recalls. Together, they found a way. “When he leftHandicrafts, he was no different than any other crafter, working on his projectas he walked down the path. That Friday night, he found me in the Dining Hallso I could do the finishing stitch. I was so proud of him. I will never forgetteaching him.” The Gift of Volunteering For Peggy, volunteering at Camp Ondessonk is notjust about service, it’s about belonging. “I think it’s impossible to figure outwho gets the better end of the bargain,” she reflects. “Perhaps it’s neither menor the administration, but the campers who get the best part.” Her advice to those considering volunteering. “If you love camping in general or Camp Ondessonk in particular, pack your bags and getyour application in. It’s an experience you will never forget and one that will make you smile whenever you remember it.” And if she had todescribe Camp in just one word? “Paradise,” she says without hesitation. “It was a place God made for man and woman to live and behappy. That’s how I feel when I’m at Camp.” For Peggy Hausmann, Camp Ondessonk is more than a place - it’s a calling, a community, and a lifelong love. And through her unwaveringdedication, she continues to shape its legacy, one camper, one craft, and one tradition at a time. If you had todescribe Camp injust one word?“Paradise.” Creating Lasting Impact Beyond her daily contributions, Peggy has left an indelible mark on Camp Ondessonk’s culture. She is a guardianof tradition, reminding new generations of staff and campers of Camp’s rich history. “I lecture staff at Handicrafts when they refer to theGolden Arrowhead as the ‘GA,’” she explains. “I try to tell them that by shortening it, they take away from the value of the award.” Her beliefin the power of Camp traditions is rooted in her own experiences. She fondly recalls friendships that have stood the test of time, includinga 60-year bond with Lucia (Juenger) Hodges, her former unit leader. “Friends like that are hard to find,” she says. “Camp will always be ourconnection.” A Lifelong Passion for Giving Back Over the years, Peggy has wor n many hats at CampOndessonk, always stepping up where needed. Her early volunteering days found herworking in Handicrafts, a natural fit for someone who cherishes the art of boondoggle. Yet,her willingness to support Camp in any capacity became evident as she took onresponsibilities such as supervising shower houses, assisting with volunteer coordination, and even helping manage COVID-19 testing for volunteers. “I was known to do almostanything in a pinch,” she laughs. “They even asked me to take the 10:00 pm to midnight unitshift because they needed someone over 19. I never actually had to do it, but they knew Iwould if needed.” Despite the variety of roles she has played, teaching boondoggle remainsher favorite. “I have done this for so long that I know I say the same words over and over toteach any given stitch,” she says. “I sometimes think I am nuts for saying them, but I love theresults and the smiles.”

Camp Ondessonk was a beloved story for Justine Braskich long before itbecame a lived experience. Her father, Jim Huskey, was born in East St. Louis in1940. As a teenager he helped clear the original entrance road to Camp, layingthe foundation for something truly special. Though Justine grew up north ofChicago and never attended as a camper herself, the stories from cousins whodid, left an indelible impression - Camp Ondessonk was a special place.  Justine tucked those Camp stories away in the back of her mind as she grewuntil years later after she became a mother of three. When her oldest, Molly, was 12, the memory was reawakened by a conversation at church. Anotherfamily spoke of Camp with the same wonder Justine remembered from hercousins, “Their oldest was planning on working at Camp and their otherchildren’s description mirrored the magical camp experience that I imaginedinto existence in my mind.” Just like that, Camp Ondessonk was back on theBraskich family’s radar.  Molly’s first summer in 2017 came with uncertainty: sweltering temperatures, long distance from home, and no contact for a week. But when Justine returnedto pick her up and saw her daughter in tears, she feared the worst. “When wearrived to pick Molly up, she was in Le Coeur with a bunch of girls and as sheturned, I could see she was crying. My initial thought was that she hated it and Iwas so sad and I felt guilty that I dropped my kid here and left for a week.”Justine remembers, “Turns out, she was crying because she didn’t want to leave. She had found her magic. She had found her people. She left Camp knowingwhat a full heart really felt like and wanting that feeling to last forever.”  That first week sparked a lasting bond. Molly became a Lodge member the nextsummer and is now a Senior Lodge Official and part of the summer staff, continuing her Ondessonk journey. Her brothers, Luke and Xavier, followedeagerly in her footsteps, beginning as mini campers and now participating instaff and leadership programs. This summer, Luke joins the full summer staff, and Xavier will attend traditional camp and take part in the two-weekOndessonk Wisdom in Leadership (OWL) program.  While Molly’s path brought the Braskich family to Camp, it was the Fall LodgeReunion in 2018 that connected Justine to Camp. Hoping to stay nearby whileMolly enjoyed the reunion with her friends, Justine discovered Stable Round Up,a volunteer weekend held at the same time, and never looked back. “That’swhere my personal journey with Camp really started,” she says. “Volunteering atStable Round Up was rewarding and invigorating. It met every single one of mylofty expectations! I fell in love with all of it.” Rooted in Faith: How the Braskich Family Found Their Place at Camp Ondessonk “Turns out, she was cryingbecause she didn’t want to leave. She had found her magic. She hadfound her people. She left Campknowing what a full heart reallyfelt like and wanting that feelingto last forever.” Since 2018, the Braskichs have been a regular presence at volunteer weekends, supporting Camp both through hands-on work andfinancial gifts. From building pasture fences with fellow volunteers to navigating surprise encounters with snakes during a cold shower,Justine has collected stories as rich and lasting as the Camp legacy itself.  The Braskich family’s connection to Camp has shaped their values and way of life. “If we hadn’t sent Molly to Camp O, I don’t think ourfamily would have been motivated to find nature in other spaces as much as we do,” Justine shares. Together, they’ve traveled tonational parks, deepened their love for conservation, and made space in their lives for faith, stillness, and service.

“Camp has shaped our hearts and been a touchstone of every summer for all of us,” Justineshared. “The memories made are significant and will last a lifetime. My kids have had leadershipopportunities that have helped them grow and has clearly shaped them as people. They have allgrown in their faith and confidence as a result of Camp.” Justine sees Camp Ondessonk as more than a place, it’s a transformational experience thatbuilds confidence, faith, and resilience in young people. “Camp gives kids ALL the aspects ofgrowing up that they truly need now more than ever before,” she says. “Low-stakes risk-taking,being in nature, real-time peer interaction. ALL of these things are so vital to developing intohappy, healthy adults.”  What sets Camp Ondessonk apart, in her view, is its foundation of faith and genuine community.“It is different from other camps because it has been built entirely on faith. God has provideddonors, volunteers, materials and the fact that He built Camp using our hands is what makes itspecial,” she says. “You can feel His presence there.” “It is different from other camps because it has been built entirely on faith. God hasprovided donors, volunteers, materials and the fact that He built Camp using our handsis what makes it special,” she says. “You can feel His presence there.” Looking to the future, Justine hopes Camp continues to hold tight to its identity: sacred, rustic, a place for growth and connection.  Thanks to the Braskich family and others like them, Camp Ondessonk continues to thrive not just as a Summer Camp, but as apowerful force for good, generation after generation. continued ....Rooted in Faith: How the Braskich Family Found Their Place at Camp Ondessonk Ranger Mike’s contributions can be seen all over Camp Ondessonk. Fromfixing water lines and electrical systems to cutting hay and clearing trees;he built, repaired, and enhanced the Camp experience from the groundup. His final project, the Pete Korte Lodge, is a fitting capstone. It is astunning new staff duplex that reflects Mike’s commitment to excellenceand will house future generations of Camp leaders.On April 13, Mike’s family and the Camp Community celebrated his legacywith a retirement party held in the Dining Hall. The celebration drewhundreds of well-wishers—friends, staff, campers, volunteers—whogathered to honor Mike’s lifetime of service.End of an Era: Honoring Mike Jennings' 30-Year Legacyat Camp Ondessonk After three decades of dedication, craftsmanship, and quiet leadership, Mike retired inApril 2024 from his role as Camp Ranger and Director of Maintenance. Mike Jennings wasmore than a skilled builder and tireless worker, he was a teacher, mentor, counselor, andfriend. For campers, volunteers, and staff alike, he was the steadfast presence you couldcount on quietly ensuring safety, solving problems, and cheering others on without askingfor recognition. Each summer, thousands of children run through the forests, climb rock walls, sing around campfires, and discover the wonder of CampOndessonk. For one single mother of two, those experiences became a reality not because of her circumstances but because of yourgenerosity, your faith in Camp's mission, and your belief in the potential of every child."They stand taller now. They believe in themselves." to the Camp OndessonkScholarship Fund. PLEASEPLEASE DONATEDONATE I felt a flicker of hope. Iapplied with a prayer anda lot of faith, and when wewere accepted, I criedtears of joy. It felt like agift I never could've giventhem on my own." A Camp Scholarship & the Gift of Growth: How One Mother's Prayer Became a Life-Changing Summer She first heard about Camp Ondessonk through a friend at church who had sent her kids andcouldn't stop talking about the experience. At the time, this mom was simply trying to findsomething meaningful for her children—a summer opportunity that was more than justpassing the time. "When I learned about the scholarship program," she says, "I felt a flicker ofhope. I applied with a prayer and a lot of faith, and when we were accepted, I cried tears of joy.It felt like a gift I never could've given them on my own." That gift became so much more than a week in the woods. Her children came home from Camp not just sun-kissed and tired buttransformed—more responsible, confident, and resilient. Her oldest began making his own lunches without being asked. Once painfullyshy, her youngest started leading school projects and guiding her family out of the woods on a hike, proudly saying, "I learned this atCamp Ondessonk!" For this family, the Camp Ondessonk Scholarship Fund provided more than financial assistance, it opened the door to self-discovery,leadership, peace in nature, and a new family tradition rooted in joy and growth. "As soon as the school year ends, we start gettingready shopping for bug spray and water shoes, writing notes to tuck into their bags," she shared. "And when they come home, theybring a little of that Camp Magic back with them." Her message to those who make this magic possible is simple but powerful:"Please know thatyou're not just sending a kid to Camp. You're giving a child the chance to grow, to believe inthemselves, and to discover what they're capable of. You're supporting families like mine inways you may never fully realize." Camp Ondessonk exists to build character, confidence, and community through the joy ofoutdoor adventure. For many children, that journey begins with your help. When you give tothe Camp Scholarship Fund, you're not just making summer dreams come true, you'reshaping young lives for years to come. Because every child deservesthe chance to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

The Pete Korte Lodge has turned into a welcoming home forCamp’s full-time staff. After more than five years of planning, raising funds, creating architectural drawings, clearing the site, pouring footings and floor, framing, roofing, insulation, drywall,HVAC, plumbing, electrical, painting, and finally furniture, rugs, and appliances, the duplex is now home to five appreciative staffmembers. After an Open House and Dedication of the home November 2,2024, when members of Pete’s family, volunteers who worked onthe building, staff, and Camp friends were on hand, the OutdoorEducation Team began moving into the duplex. “After a long hardday, having a place like the Pete Korte Lodge to step away fromCamp to recharge in a beautiful space is a great gift,” LathanBower comments. Dom Vanderiet expresses the intrinsic value of living in the newhome. He states, “I love waking up at Camp with pastures to oneside and forest to the other - it sets the tone for the whole day.Pete Korte Lodge is more than housing; it’s a great place thathelps us recharge so we can give our best to the campers.” “Our House, is a very, very, very fine house...”PETE KORTE LODGE THANK YOU to all of our generous donors andvolunteers who have made this home areality!Because of the common space (living, dining, and kitchen) on eachside of the duplex, staff enjoying their new home can collaboratemuch easier on projects, but they also can have fun together. EllieRoth explains, “Having a place to grow in community with the entireOutdoor Education team has been incredible. Living all in one spacehas really helped us to grow closer.” After so many years of dreaming about new staff housing, thereality is even better than the dream. It is a place that iscomfortable, safe, and appealing. Full-time staff work very hard tomeet the mission of Camp Ondessonk day in and day out. Thishome allows Camp to attract and retain excellent staff who makethe Ondessonk experience one that is second to none. SamLenhard sums it up nicely, “Having a dedicated, comfortable spacelike Pete Korte Lodge makes such a difference. It allows us to focuson what we’re here to do, connect kids to nature.” Members of Pete Korte’s family attended the Open House and Dedication onNovember 2, 2024 with volunteers and donors who made the builing a reality.
