Brian Colón, a proud lifelong New Mexican raised in Valencia County, has dedicated his life toserving and protecting the most vulnerable members of his community. As the first in his family to earnboth an undergraduate degree in finance from New Mexico State University and a law degree fromThe University of New Mexico School of Law, Brian has built a remarkable career that spans nearly aquarter of a century. Currently, he is the Managing Partner of Singleton Schreiber’s New Mexicooffices, where his fearless leadership has driven significant growth, expanding the firm to seven officesstatewide. The firm now specializes in various legal fields, including wrongful death, personal injury,medical malpractice, environmental law, and more.Before his role at Singleton Schreiber, Brian served as the State Auditor of New Mexico, where hemade a profound impact by establishing an oversight and accountability unit to protect individuals inconservatorships. Under his leadership, the State Auditor’s Office achieved its largest recovery inhistory, securing over $13 million for seniors overcharged by insurance intermediaries.A passionate servant leader, Brian is deeply committed to his community, serving on numerous boardsand volunteering tirelessly to help New Mexico reach its full potential. Known for his dedication tomentoring young professionals, Brian’s influence is felt far and wide. After retiring, Bruce Gronseth found a new calling in supporting the NewMexico Dream Center. He became a vital part of NMDC’s operations,lending his skills as a handyman, maintenance expert, and all-aroundproblem solver. Bruce’s dedication extends to the upkeep of transitionalhousing apartments, the Eliza Jane House shelter, and the Harbour, where hisefforts have made a significant impact on the lives of human traffickingsurvivors. Bruce’s kindness and willingness to tackle any challenge have beena blessing to the clients and staff alike, embodying the spirit of service andcompassion that drives the New Mexico Dream CenterVolunteer AwardBruce GronsethDefender AwardAdam ArellanoSpecial Agent Adam Arellano, with over 20 years of experience in lawenforcement, serves with the New Mexico Department of Justice. For thepast eight years, Adam has been dedicated to investigating childexploitation, labor trafficking, and sex trafficking across New Mexico. Heis deeply involved in training law enforcement, school personnel, andcommunity members on human trafficking awareness. Adam collaborateswith federal, state, and local agencies to combat human trafficking whileensuring that survivors receive the care and support they need. Hiscommitment to a holistic approach helps bridge the gap between lawenforcement and service providers, fostering a stronger, morecompassionate response to human trafficking in our state.2024 CHAMPIONSThe mission of the Apartment Association of New Mexico (AANM) is to empower,promote, preserve, and advance the rental housing industry in New Mexicothrough innovative education, advocacy, legislation, and communication. Foundedin 1979, AANM is a private non-profit trade organization that represents over 875members and more than 70,000 rental units across the state. AANM is dedicatedto fostering professionalism and career development within the industry whileadvocating for legislative efforts that benefit property owners, investors, andresidents. Genevieve Chavez, from the Pueblo of Santa Ana, is a devoted mother of fourand grandmother of ten. Her deep love for her family fuels her commitment toher work as the Program Manager for the Education and Advocacy againstSex Trafficking (EAST) Program at First Nations Community Healthsource inAlbuquerque. With over 21 years of experience in direct client care,Genevieve has dedicated her life to serving survivors of human trafficking,domestic violence, and sexual assault. Her compassionate approach andtireless efforts to find resources for those in need have made a profounddifference in the lives of many. Genevieve also serves on the NM Murderedand Missing Indigenous People (MMIP) Task Force, NM Human TraffickingTask Force, and the Sex Trafficking Allied Response Team, contributing hervast experience and deep compassion to these critical causes.Small Miracles AwardGenevieve ChavezMiracle Award Kyle OrrIn 2021, the New Mexico Dream Center faced the challenge of expanding itstransitional housing program to better support victims and survivors of humantrafficking. Finding a landlord willing to accommodate the uniquecircumstances these clients face can be difficult. However, the Dream Centerwas fortunate to meet Kyle Orr, who, along with his family, owns severalproperties. Kyle’s willingness to provide housing for those in need, despite themany hurdles involved, has been a true blessing. His commitment to this causeexemplifies the spirit of community and compassion that is essential to the workof the New Mexico Dream Center. Without the support of dedicated individualslike Kyle Orr and his family, the Dream Center’s mission would not be possible.Toya Kaplan is the founder of “For the One,” an organization born from her ownexperiences of childhood abuse. Motivated by a desire to protect childrenfrom exploitation, Toya has dedicated herself to preventing the horrors of sextrafficking and sexual exploitation before they occur. From 2015 to 2020, sheworked directly with victims and survivors, witnessing firsthand the lifelongimpact of these crimes. In 2020, she launched the “Vulnerable No More”campaign, focused on educating and empowering children and communities tostay ahead of predators. Through free events and presentations, Toya and herteam expose the tactics used by traffickers and provide families with the toolsthey need to protect themselves.
