Since starting, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with and buildrapport with a number of our guests, allowing me to betterunderstand their needs and the myriad reasons why our pantryis so needed in this community. I’ve met with a number ofcommunity members and organization leaders who’vededicated time and valuable resources to HFO. And, I’ve hadconversations with volunteers and community groups who arededicated to fighting food insecurity. These conversations andthe opportunity to dig in to the HFO network have been crucialin providing needed context as we think about how we cangrow HFO in to an organization that ensures we’re servingthose in need to the best of our ability.By the time you read this, we will have gone through our firststrategic planning process and landed on key 1-3-5 year goalswhich will keeping us mission driven as we move into 2025 andbeyond. We know that the work we do here at Hunger FightersOregon will need to adapt and evolve to meet the rising needof those in our community. We will continue to work to meetthat need and we look forward to growing as an organizationwith the support of amazing community members like you.Thank you,The HFO Team: Jackie, Simone, and MarleaFirst and foremost, Ihave to thank to theHFO family and the LakeOswego community forall of the support I’vereceived since startingin April, 2024. Firstup was assembling and delivering 100emergency food boxes for ACCparticipants. Next, we created a newpantry shop day for seniors in thecommunity. HOW WE WORKHunger Fighters Oregon is able fulfill its mission thanks to generous donorsand community members like you! Your financial and food donationscombined allow us to curate a food pantry that meets our guests needs whilealso providing items that they might not have access to otherwise!Financial donations help us keep the pantry lights on and our pantry staffed. They also play a critical role in keeping our shelves stocked with the food andhousehold essentials that our guests have come to expect from us. When werun low on stock, we are able to purchase needed items with these funds. Thisapproach is a unique aspect of our pantry that sets us a part from others.Food donations come to us in a few ways—we receive anonymous, in-kind fooddonations to our onsite donation bin 24/7 and we receive large donationsthrough food an supply drives hosted by local groups and organizations. Wework with community partners, like the Friends of Luscher Farms HarvestHelpers, to receive regular on-going donations of specific food items.Gleaned food help us keep our shelves appealing to our guests! Through ourfood rescue program (aka gleaning) we are able to provide our guests withfresh, nutritious, and diverse food options. These items are something that ourguests regularly rave about and come to look forward to. Thank you to ourlocal gleaning partners at Gleaner of Clackamas County, New Seasons,Zupans, and Grocery Outlet. What does it mean to be “No Barriers”?No barriers means that anyone can access our pantry—no questionsasked. Many families are susceptible to misfortune. A car accident, anillness, or a layoff can drastically change a family’s budget. That’swhere we come in. It can take weeks or months for people in thesesituations to access governmental support, so we can be a quickand painless way to keep food on the table while they sort out theirsituation.Whether a person is chronically unemployed, a recent immigranttrying to navigate a new life, disabled, or temporarily in need, wewant to be known as a trusted and reliable source of relief in thiscommunity.

VISITING THE PANTRYOur guests can “shop” our pantrytwice per month, perusing ouraisles and selecting the items theyneed most. When guests visit thepantry, they are checked-in by ourfriendly volunteers, they then waittheir turn to shop. All new guests fillout an intake form which we use tocollect household, demographic, and other information that we usefor reporting and tracking. All of our food, hygiene, andhousehold supplies have amaximum amount that can betaken by each guest based on theirhousehold size. This amountchanges day to day based onsupply. Our maximums allow us tomake sure that we are able to servethe most people possible. At Hunger Fighters Oregon, our volunteersare critical to the work we do. HFO startedas a volunteer-run program and ourvolunteers continue to play a crucial rolein our day to day operations. We provide various entry points for ourvolunteers, making sure we are meetingthem where they are and giving themmeaningful opportunities to show theirsupport of our organization. Whether theyare a high school student fulfillingcommunity service hours, a family lookingto do something together, individualslooking to make a difference in theircommunity. , we can find a spot for anyoneto in our pantry! We do expect our volunteers to show and treat our guests with therespect and dignity they deserve. Food insecurity is a stigmatized issue inour community—no judgement and no bias, that’s all we ask of ourvolunteers and staff!
