World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is a global campaign that raises awareness about migratory birds’ incredible journeys. Founded in 1993 as International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), now known as World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), this event was established at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. In 2007, it found its home at Environment for the Americas (EFTA), a non-profit organization dedicated to bird conservation. EFTA has evolved IMBD with annual conservation themes covering topics like habitats, climate change, and protective laws. In 2018, IMBD merged with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), and the Flyway Partnership between East Asia and Australasia (EAAFP), creating WMBD to amplify bird conservation worldwide. Each year, artists from around the world submit their work to be carefully considered by a panel of reviewers, and one artist is selected. WMBD 2023 artist was Augusto Silva.Born in Bilwi, on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, Augusto Silva is known for his colorful murals depicting various parts of Nicaragua. He holds a degree in plastic arts from the National School of Arts in Managua and a degree in Cultural Sciences from the Universidad Centroamericana. His work is inspired largely by the landscape, environment, and people of the Caribbean Sea. His work also includes; scientific illustration, mainly of birds, and illustrations for childrens books.Un elemento central del Día Mundial de las Aves Migratorias es la obra de arte que refleja nuestro tema anual de conservación.
