The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. Itcelebrates over 75 years as a premier women’s volunteer service organization with a long traditionof promoting and engaging in educational, civic and inter-cultural activities that enrich the lives ofmembers of the Black community at large. The cornerstone of our service is our five programmingfacets — Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, International Trends andServices, and Health and Human Services. Through our facets, we implement programs andinitiatives that address the most critical needs of underserved communities. Annually, we impactthe lives of more than 3 million people at home and abroad.The Links, Incorporated's strength lies in its more than 17,000 members in 299 chapters locatedin 42 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and the UnitedKingdom.THE LINKS, INCORPORATEDTHE LINKS FOUNDATION, INCORPORATEDThe Links Foundation, Incorporated, the philanthropic arm of The Links, Incorporated, has mademore than $27 million in charitable contributions since its founding. The Foundation is a non-profitcorporation operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning ofSection 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, as amended. The Links Foundation, Incorporated has awarded six $1 million grants, the most recent being in2022 to the Obama Presidential Center. Other million-dollar grantees include: the St. JudeChildren’s Research Hospital; the Smithsonian National Museum of African American Culture andHistory in Washington, D.C.; the United Negro College Fund; the NAACP Legal Defense andEducational Fund, Inc.; and, the National Civil Rights Museum.The New Orleans (LA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, sponsored by the Houston Chapter, waschartered on November 23, 1957. The New Orleans (LA) Chapter was the first chapter of The Links,Incorporated in the state of Louisiana. The chapter is a part of the Southern Area of The Links,Incorporated, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina,South Carolina and the Bahamas. The chapter sponsored the Baton Rouge (LA) Chapter in 1964. The New Orleans (LA) Chapter has been recognized for its programming. Of note, for over 30years, The New Orleans (LA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has hosted the local rounds of theScripps National Spelling Bee. The goal of the spelling bee is to encourage students in grades 5ththrough 8th to challenge themselves to master the fundamentals of vocabulary and spelling. Thetop spellers from our region compete for one spot at the national bee in Washington, D.C.In 2021, the local rounds of the spelling bee were hosted virtually by The New Orleans (LA)Chapter of The Links. Incorporated. Zaila Avant-garde of Louisiana was the winner of Louisiana’slocal round of the bee. On July 8, 2021, Zaila Avant-garde became the 2021 Scripps NationalSpelling Bee Champion. She was the first African-American winner of the Bee and the first everLouisiana winner. During the 2017 Southern Area Conference, the chapter was recognized for Best Practices in theSouthern Area for its Civic Engagement and Awareness Program. Also, the chapter's annual HBCUArt Showcase, in partnership with the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, has been garneredaccolades for programming best practices. The New Orleans (LA) Chapter continues to innovate its programming and expand its reach intothe community by providing much needed educational opportunities and additional support for the greater New Orleans metropolitan area.
