4 Bingo! Use a projector to show the bingo sheet in the boxes. Students from two teams make a word with a blend sound. The faster one can throw a sticky ball to the bingo sheet. The first team that finishes connecting lines wins. (3x3 -> 1 line, 4x4 -> 3 lines, 5x5-> 5 lines) projector, Bingo sheet file, sticky ball Go To the Goal! Separate kids into teams. Draw a path on the whiteboard. Use a magnet to represent their team. Each block will have a blend sound or a sign on it. If they walk to a block with a blend sound, they need to give me a word (a sentence) by using that sound. You can be creative and put some different things in the blocks to make the game more fun or more difficult (depends on your class’s level). The one who get to the end first will be the winner. X Paper Scissors Stone Practice some blending vowel words with students first (Ex. way, rain, cane…). Two people play at a time. Teacher shows them the blending sounds cards (ex. “ai”), students play paper scissors stone by saying “ai ai ai” instead of saying “paper scissors stone”. The winner of the game has an advantage of saying a word with “ai” sound first. If the winner cannot say the word within dive seconds, the loser can answer. Whoever answers correctly gets a point for the team. blends sound cards Digraph Witch's Spell Students make a big circle and Teacher stands in the middle. Teacher says a word with a digraph sound and points to a student to spell it with a letter. The next student that is pointed by teacher spells the next letter and so on. Each student can only say a letter. If anyone spells it wrong or more than one letter or helps other people, he or she is out. (To make sure everyone feels comfortable at the game, teacher can let students practice spelling the same word one by one for several times before the game starts.) X Hop Through the Path! 2.0 Separate students into two teams. Set up the yoga mat as a long path. Put the flashcards on the path randomly. The teacher will assign a digraph sound. Students will need to hop through the path by hopping on the right sound’s words only. They also need to read the words out while hopping on them. The teacher needs to tell them how many words they need to find. They need to find all the words of that sound. The teacher will set up the timer and see which team can finish in a shorter time. yoga dot, digraph sound cards, digraph words cards

5 Word Hunt 1.0 Prepare some boxes and put balls inside. Each ball has words on it. Teachers call out a word and students need to go and find it from one of the boxes. If you found it, you need to run back to your team before the other team tags you. The team who got the most balls win. Teachers can add some empty balls to make it harder. boxes, balls with words on, Digraph boxes Put different digraph labels on each box, a dash in front of the sound means the special sound comes at the end of the word, a dash after the sound means the special sound comes at the beginning of the word. Each team get a pile of picture cards, set the timer for one minute. The cards put in the right boxes get one point, put in the wrong boxes minus one point. The team gets higher point is a winner. boxes, digraph sounds cards, digraph words cards Roll a Sound! - Students need to: reads the word correctly (yay!) reads the blend correctly but changes the middle vowel sound. makes up a new word entirely snail poster with blends words Back to Back Teacher makes the digraph flashcards. Students are separated into two or three teams. Each team sends one student. Standing back to back and each of them will hold one different card first. Quickly turn back together and say the word which is held by another person. Completing faster will get the point. The team which has more points in the end will be the winner. digraph words cards, Apple Tree Separate into two teams. Teacher will draw a super big apple tree on the whiteboard and then stick every phonics flashcards on the tree. Teacher will draw an apple or some apples at the back of some phonics flashcards. Also, draw a worm or some worms at the back of some phonics flashcards. The worms can be more than the apples. Then assign a student in each team to the front then paper, scissors, stone to see which one goes first. They can choose the flashcard they want. Then, they should say the sound and also make a word. Then open the back of the flashcard to see if it is an apple or a worm. If the flashcard is the apple, then they can get one point. If the flashcard is the worm, then no point. The game is over until there is no more flashcards on the whiteboard. In the end, see which team get the most points will be the winner. diagraph sound cards

6 Sight Words Connect Four Divided into 2 team, red and blue sitting at 2 side of in 2 line. Teachers draw a 4x4 table on the whiteboard, give them a whiteboard marker and play the music, when the music stop, only the person who holding the marker can stand up and said a sight word and spell it nicely can get 1 point. After that they can quickly go to the whiteboard and write down one sight word in the table. The team that can connect 4 words in the table can bring 4 points for their team. The team that has more points will be the winner. X Picky Eater Separate students in to 2 teams. When it’s their team’s turn, they assign one person as a picky eater. Picky eater can set up the rules, like picky eater only eat 3 letters words or only eat the words begin with a, etc. Give both teams a little whiteboard. Set up the timer for 1 min, they can write down as many as they can. DSW cards Guess the Word! Make 2 or 3 teams. Each team has a person who tries to show the sight words by using hand gestures or acting out. Every team has one minute to see how many words they can guess right. You can put a frisbee on top of their head to make it more difficult. If the frisbee falls their time stops and they get whatever points they have. DSW cards, frisbees Connect Four Put the sight word cards on the floor and before they put the coin on the card, they need to say the word and make a sentence and who connect 4 cards win. DSW cards, coins Beat Quizlet! -play the sight word set on flashcards on auto play -students need to say the word all together before Quizlet does -see how many points they beat Quizlet. Q-Pads Hidden Words 2 Students will find all the hidden pictures and say the words then circle them → Write down the words to get points. X Occupy Use yoga dots to make a path on the floor and put sight words cards beside each yoga dot. Separate the class into two teams, stand in line at two ends of the path. The first kid from both teams start to walk along the path at the same time. When they walk, they have to say all the words beside the yoga dots they step on. When two kids meet, do Paper Scissors Stone. Winner keeps going, loser goes back to the team and line up again, and the second one from the loser team starts to go. The first team that sends all the kid to the other side wins. yoga dots, DSW cards,

1 Phonics Game List - Advanced Content Props 20 Vowels / Vowels Song Find the Twins! Teacher says a vowel sound from 20 vowels words and students need to write down the words with same sound on the whiteboard. 20 vowel words cards – 1 set Story Writing Relay Each group of students get a piece of scrap paper. Send a leader to draw a word card from the teacher. Each student takes turns to make a sentence from the word they get. (Teachers can decide how many words / sentences they need to make, so the story will be short or long.) 20 vowel words cards – 1 set, scrap paper, Body Twister Separate the class into two teams and put 20 vowel flashcards on the floor. When team A is playing, team B can assign which body part they want team A to put on certain flashcards, and team B need to make a sentence with the word they assign. 20 vowel words cards Listen Carefully Separate the class into four teams, four kids in a team, and every kid lines up by team. First kid of all teams gets a sentence from teacher and writes it down on paper. Then they whisper the sentence to the second kid, and the second kid also writes it down on paper. The game goes on with this routine and the fourth kid needs to show teacher the sentence. The team which has complete sentence wins. Teacher Team A 1 2 3 4 Team B 1 2 3 4 Team C 1 2 3 4 Team D 1 2 3 4 paper / small whiteboards Make a Story Teachers will make some numbers 1~16. Each kid draws a number. Every student needs to think of a sentence that have a word in twenty vowels. Teachers and students figure out a story together. X Short Vowels Show and Spell! Teacher chooses a student to stand at front and whisper a short vowel word to his/her ear. The student needs to sign the words with ASL. And other students (in teams) need to quickly spell it with Bananagrams and then make a sentence. X Line-up Game Give them random words to try to line them up according to the short—long vowels way. Teachers need to prep students first. Example: Bat -> Egg -> trick -> Toss -> luck. You can even try with students’ names! X

2 Find Your Words 3 (find - say – sort) Draw five columns (a, e, i, o, u) on the whiteboard. Put many vowel words cards in a box. When teacher says a word, kids find the card from the box, put it in the correct column according to the vowel, and make a sentence with the word. The sentences kid make need to relate to the previous sentence, so in the end there will be a story. X Roll the Dice! Teacher makes a dice with short vowels (we can tape the card on the dice). Separate the class into 2 teams and make 2 lines. Each student take turn to roll the dice, say the word they get, and make a sentence with that word. They can write the word & sentence on the whiteboard and get 1 point for their team. (Teacher can prepare worksheet for them to write down the words & sentences they have made and tape the worksheet in their books). dice, short vowel words cards, worksheet Solitaire! Using short vowels’ words to play solitaire, the team who cannot think of any word is the loser. Ex. Apple→ elephant →top→pin→nut…. X Match the Vowel Sound Teacher puts many picture cards on the floor, face down. Students take turns to find two items that have matching vowel sound. If they find the same vowel sound ca rds, they can keep the cards, whoever has the most pairs wins. EX. Pot and Mop both have ‘o’ sound, so they are a pair. short vowel picture cards Long Vowels Human Bananagrams Each student will get some different letter cards (one or two vowels and some consonants). When they hear a long vowel word, they need to quickly find some people to spell the word with the letter cards they have. When they choose the letter they want to use, they can put the cards on their forehead. 26 letters cards – several sets

3 Phonic Board game 1.Teacher writes 12 long vowel words on circle cards, and 12 long vowels on pentagonal cards. 2. Put the circle cards on the table, face down, and surround them with pentagonal cards. 3.Put two chess pieces on the pentagonal cards, they should be in diagonal position. 4.If the chess piece is on “ie”, the team needs to guess which circle card has “ie” on it and turn one card over to check if they get it. 5.If they are correct, they may move to the next pentagonal card; if they are wrong, put the circle card back and stay where they are. 6.The team who catches up another team first will be the winner. 12 circle cards – with long vowel words, 12 pentagonal cards – with long vowel sounds, chess pieces Guess the Word! LV1. Separate the class into two teams. One kid from each team gets a word card from teacher and describe it in English to let other teammates guess in 3 mins (one by one). If they get it, they can keep the card, and the team with the most cards win. LV2. Separate the class into two teams. One kid from each team be the guesser, the other teammates get a word card from teacher and describe it one by one to let the guesser guess. If the guesser gets it, they can keep the card, and the team with the most cards wins. long vowel words cards Choose the One You Like Teacher thinks of 25 different questions and fill in the squares, students can choose the point they wa nt but they need to answer the question correctly to get points. ppt slides with 25 questions Draw a Word! Separate the class into teams, each team stand in a line. Teacher will show the first person a word, other people need to turn around and they cannot see the word. After teacher shows the word, the first person can start to draw then show it to the second person. The second person only has 20 seconds to remember the drawing, and then the second person needs to try to draw the same as the first person and pass to the third person until the last one. And the last person needs to guess the word and make a sentence. long vowel words cards, small whiteboards

4 Blends Read My Lips LV.1 Teacher provides some blending sound words on the whiteboard and then ask student to read teacher’s lips. The fastest team to make a sentence will be the winner. LV.2 Teacher will read 2~3 words silently and they need to come up with a tongue twister sentences. X Jumble Mania Provide students with some blends, vowels, ending sounds. Students work in teams, try to create as many words as they can. For each round, one student from each team runs up and writes a word on the whiteboard at a time. Which team has more words wins. After that, they can choose 10 words to create a story. X I’m an Actor/Actress! The first student draws the words on a small whiteboard and passes to the second student. The second student sees the picture and acts it out to the next student. The third student uses clay to show the word. The fourth student sees the clay, he/she writes the answer on the big whiteboard. The first team that finishes and gets the right answer is the winner. small whiteboards, clay Go to the Goal! X ClassDojo Assignment Teacher creates an assignment (ex. ey) on Class ClassDojo. When teacher says blending vowel words, students write down some sentences and draw a picture related to the sentences on the Q-pad. Teacher reviews all the posts with class at the end. Q-Pads Digraph Highlight! Students are separated into 4 groups. Teacher gives each group a short article (e.g., CC stories, MTH...). Each time, teacher says a word with digraph and students highlight it. After highlighting 5~6 words, each group makes one sentence out of the highlighted words and write down on the whiteboard. Teacher checks and reviews the answers (meaningful and grammatical) with the whole class. Article with digraph words, from CC stories or MTH

5 100! Prepare some dice with digraph sounds on it. Separate in to two teams. They take turn to roll the dice. After they roll the dice, they will need to make a word by using that digraph sound in 10 seconds. They need to tell us how to spell the word. Each letter counts as one point. The team who gets to 100 first will be the winner. To make it more difficult, they need to let the score be exactly 100. If it is more than 100, you count backward. (ex. If they had 98 points already, the word they spell has 5 letters. their score will be 97.) For the dice, we can either make the digraph sound dice by ourselves or just tape flashcards on the regular dice dice, digraph sound cards, Hunt Them Down! Make two teams in the soccer area. Tape some blends/ diagraphs on one end of the soccer area (boxes or goals), and students need to hunt the words down according to the mission you gave them. Example: How many Cl blend words are at the end? Students need to go find all the cl words and give teacher the numbers (A: There are 5 words!) blends / diagraph words cards Sticky Ball Separate the class into two teams, one person from the team throw the sticky ball on the whiteboard, and need to write down a word to the corresponding diagraph. Students in the team take turn to throw a ball. See which team can get higher point in three minutes is a winner. sticky ball Ninja Race Ninja phonics game poster Spin the Wheel! Teacher writes all the digraphs on the wheel. One student comes to the front once. Spinning the wheel and using the digraph to make a word. Writing the word on the whiteboard. After all students finish, they need to use the words to make a story together. spinner Read Your Teacher’s Mind Separate into two or three teams. Each team can get a small whiteboard. Teacher will say a sound and also the number of letters. Like, “ph” “five letters”. Then each team will write a word on the small whiteboard and they also need to guess what teacher will write. If they can guess the right letter, one letter can get one point. But the letters of phonics won’t count. If they can use the word that they wrote to make a sentence, they can get the point. If they can use the small whiteboards

Page 68

6 word that teacher wrote to make a sentence also can get the point. In the end, see which team get the most points is the winner. Sight Words I Got You Students separated in 2 team, Red & Blue, make 2 lines and let everybody sit back-to-back, each student have a number in their line (Ex: Red 1, Red 2... vs Blue 1, Blue 2) Each student hold a flashcard on their head. They must remember their color and number. When teacher call the color and number (Ex: Red 1 and Blue 4), only "Red 1" and "Blue 4" student can turn and facing each other. The faster one that can say and spell the other team's flashcard can get 1 point, make a sentence with that word can get 1 more point for their team. Teacher can change their card after calling their number. DSW cards Shopping List Separate kids into 2 teams. Teacher will show them the list (on the list there are 12 DSW words), give them (each team sent out2~3 people) 15 secs to remember the words. When time is up, they need to sing any NWE song. Then, they can go get the words. Both teams can interrupt each other, like shouting the wrong & right answer to confuse others. When they get the words back, they need to put them in order. Depend on how many correct answers they get to give them points. DSW cards Who’s the Fastest? Split the sight words into four decks. Each team gets two decks. Each team randomly chooses two cards from the decks and quickly run to the whiteboard and write down a sentence which contains two of the sight words / run to the whiteboard, hit the buzzer, and say the sentence. DSW cards Story Time Teacher will hide the sight words cards around the classroom and airport. Separate kids into 4 teams, give them 2 minutes to find the cards. And they use the cards that they find to make a story, but they only have 5 minutes to think about the story. After that tell the story to everyone and each team will give them points. The team has highest point get a small price. DSW cards What's Next? -put all the sight word flash card in a box -Every student gets a chance to draw a flashcard out from the box and make a sentence. -The next person needs to make a sentence that can continue the story. DSW cards, box

7 Hidden Words 3 Students will find all the hidden pictures and say the words then circle them → Write down the words to get points. After that, choose 5 words to write a story related to the theme picture. DSW cards Storyteller Separate the class into several teams. Each team draws five sight words from teacher and uses those five words to make a story. Later on, they have to read or act out the story they write, and other teams have to guess what are the sight words that team got and write down the words on small whiteboards. DSW cards
