Carole Robertson Memorial Day2023-2024 North Texas Chapter Program Handbook 16
Jack and Jill DayNorth Texas Chapter celebrated Jack in Jill Day with our chapter’sannual campout weekend at Twin Coves Park and Campground inFlower Mound, TX. From September 15-17, 2023. In the spirit of Jackand Jill Day which began in 1948 under the direction of Dorothy Wrightour first National President we chose to honor the concept of a familyround-up time with a chapter cookout. We enjoyed bonding with ourchapter families as we created a wonderful campout experience for thechildren and adults. For those who choose not to participate in theovernight camping experience, we hosted a cookout on Saturday,September 16th, that was packed with fun-filled activities. The NTCcelebrated JNJ Day and Carole Robertson in a collective event. All age groups participated in activities allowing them to meet all 5thrusts and several focus areas during the JNJ Day/Carole Robertson Day festivities. We were alsoable to cover 2 leadership modules and one financial module.JNJ Thrusts and Modules covered for JNJ Day - 2023 ThrustsCivic – The children conducted a band-aid collection drive to donate to Pedia Place. They alsoparticipated in an on-site community service project assembling teen hygiene bags that were donated toPedia Place in Lewisville, TX. Additionally, the children addressed several important legislative acts as apart of the Carole Robertson tribute (i.e. Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Crown Act and others).Social – Our annual JNJ campout, a weekend of bonding and fellowship, provided a family environmentthat encouraged healthy social interactions. We had an informal “fireside chat”, Chili dogs with ChiliPeppers, which our Chili Pepper age group hosted a dinner and conversations with the children aboutwhat is happening in their lives and how we can best use our JNJ family as a supportive entity. The CaroleRobertson Day tribute also focused on public speaking opportunities for the children of NTC.Recreational – The JNJ Day cookout provided lots of recreational activities like kickball, Gaga ball,Rocket Launch, other school yard games in addition to line dancing. Once the darkness of nighttime setin, the chapter also participated in an organized night hike through Twin Cove Park guided by a local GirlScout leader, Amy Wentworth-Kotara.Cultural – The tribute in honor Carole Robertson aimed to educate the chapter on her life, the CivilRights movement, and the fight for the rights of African Americans. For the JNJ Day Cookout, wepatronized black own businesses as vendors, and extended a platform to them to speak with the chapterentrepreneurship and philanthropic giving. The children of NTC interviewed the vendors as well to createan interactive experience.Education – The children of NTC participated in activities to satisfy 2 leadership modules and onefinancial literacy module during JNJ Day 2023. They learned about public speaking and actively engagedin an opportunity through speaking roles for the Carole Robertson tribute that was performed for theentire chapter and guests. During the night hike, the children learned about nature, the importance ofknowing your surroundings and how to use their senses to navigate in the wilderness through aneducational guided nature hike. The Girl Scout leader also taught a condensed outdoor safety and first aidcourse to the children.Health – As the guided nature hike has afforded our children to meet other thrusts like education andrecreation, it also satisfied the health thrust as the children participated in a condensed first aid andoutdoor safety course. Additionally, the physical activity of the hike itself will satisfy this thrust as itpromotes a healthy active lifestyle. 2023-2024 North Texas Chapter Program Handbook 17
