404In the fall of 2015, I sat in a room of POPCS moms sharing our stories. My daughter, Cameron, had just enrolled at POPCS as a sophomore, and as ev-eryone shared how long they had been here (many 10-plus years), my only thought was, “How in the world am I going to become part of this community of people who have been here so long?” It was the last time that thought would enter my head. Eight years later and with two POPCS alumni, I see how the POPCS motto of “Welcomed, Known, Connect-ed, Prepared” applied not just to my children, but to me as well. I was welcomed by everyone and imme-diately connected to numerous volunteer opportu-nities. I have formed what will almost certainly be life-long friendships with people who have been my village. And clearly, God was preparing me, a person with no real fundraising experience, to step into my current role. What a wonderful experience it has been to watch God at work in my family. Now, the goal of making sure that POPCS can continue to welcome, connect, know, and prepare more students and families inspires me to come to work every day. God is definitely at work at POPCS. On the heels of building the Eagle Success Center and a second SmartLab, revamping our gym, and laying new turf, we logged another record-setting year in fundrais-ing, with the POPCS community giving more than $2.5 million. In addition, with the help of the EaglE Fund Cabinet, family participation in the EaglE Fund rose from 85% in 2021-2022 to 92%. Even more exciting is the fact that it feels safe to say that we have accomplished our dream of being a school with a strong culture of philanthropy. Donors give to the school generously and without restrictions, trusting in our leadership to decide where the money should be spent. The results of this culture speak for them-selves. We have updated bathrooms and flooring, re-vamped athletic facilities, bought a new 55-passen-ger bus, and built a new playground, two SmartLabs, and a center for students with learning dierences. As amazing as this is, I am even more excited about our future. With giving now firmly established as part of our culture, there is no telling what God has planned for our school and our campus.Dear Team Blue,,By the time this report is published, we will be gear-ing up to share this year’s planned projects and to launch the last year of the Forward in Faith cam-paign (the EaglE Fund will continue as our annual fund). While achieving our fundraising goal is always rewarding, I love this time of year because it reminds me of when I was a newcomer and arms the les-sons God was teaching me. My favorite lesson is that God always has big plans for us, plans to prosper us, to give us hope, and to give us a future. I can’t wait to see what He has planned for this year. I hope you share that excitement!I pray that God blesses you and your family this year through this wonderful school that I am blessed to call home.In Him,Krista BatesDirector of Advancement
505any people have a legacy of giving in their family tree. Not everyone knows where it started. But for sisters Marla and Sonya Lehmann, the answer is clear. “When each of our grandparents died, their wills contained language stating that all their material possessions were gifts from God and that they wanted their heirs to share those gifts through giving,” says Sonya. This theme was reinforced when the Leh-mann family met weekly to discuss finances and their father, August, would ask what they were doing with their tithe from the money they earned. Even though Marla and Sonya knew giving was something you should do, hearing it first from their grandparents and then their own parents reinforced the importance of using God’s gifts to give back. Their giving was further influenced by their mom, Jean, who suggested they include a Christian component in their giving. Why We GiveMSonja and Marla Lehmann with their neices, Grace (Class of 2023), Kate (Grade 12) and Claire (Grade 9) Pritchett.
606Fast forward to 2017. All three of Sonya and Marla’s nieces, Grace, Kate, and Claire Pritchett, were attending POPCS, and Jean, who spent 25 years as a teacher sharing the love of Jesus, was already supporting the POPCS EaglE Fund. “Our parents were the first to go to college in our fam-ily and really believed in Christian education. Plus, we attended a Christian school. So, giving to POPCS made sense to us,” says Marla. Their decision to support POPCS was armed by the love and care the school community showed their nieces when Jean passed away the following year. Sonya states, “We realize that not every child is lucky enough to get that love and care, so we want to do our part to see that the opportunity to attend POPCS is extended to other families.” The desire to give back, a concept engrained in the sisters by their family, led them to establish the August and Jean Lehmann Endowment at POPCS in the fall of 2022. The income from the endowment will benefit the POPCS Variable Tuition program and provide additional support for teachers. “It is a way to give back beyond our own lifetimes,” says Marla. Sonya adds, “It feels like something our parents would approve of. I know my mom would love it.” When talking about giving, Sonya and Marla use the word “fun.” When asked why giving is fun, they shared a story about a recent interaction with a teacher. Their niece, Kate, is the “artsy” one in the family, excelling in drama. Last year, she took an Engineering class with teacher Phil Seris. Kate wanted to share what she had done with her aunts. Mr. Seris stayed after a school event to open the classroom. Sonya shares, “While we were talking, you could see how excited Mr. Seris was to see Kate try something new and excel at it. Kate can’t take engineering this year, but Mr. Seris is going to continue to work with her on her projects outside of class time. Now, Kate wants to be an engineer because of her time with Mr. Seris.” Marla continues, “While giving makes us feel good and honors our parents, witnessing how a teacher helped Kate discover a passion and nurture her makes the act of giving fun. It also allows you to imagine all the possibilities for other children who will now get that opportunity.” A family legacy that benefits others and brings joy. What could be better than that? “We realize that not every child is lucky enough to get that love and care, so we want to do our part to see that the opportunity to attend POPCS is extended to other families.”—Sonya LehmannMarla, Sonja, and their neices pose for a picture with mom/grandmother, Jean Lehmann.

Isn’t tuition enough?Tuition covers mission-critical expenses, such as salaries, curriculum, and other essential operating costs. While tuition covers 100% of these costs, charitable giving allows us to enhance our programs, invest in individuals, and transform our current facilities into more relevant and exible spaces for students to learn, meet, and compete, providing an even better educational experience than what tuition alone can provide.WHAT is the POPCS EaglE Fund/Forward in Faith Campaign? The EaglE Fund is the name of the POPCS annual fund. It is a yearly appeal for unrestricted donations to enhance educational and extracurricular programming. Last year, in addition to the EaglE Fund, POPCS kicked off the Forward in Faith capital campaign. By contrast to an annual fund, a capital campaign runs for a dened period of time to raise money for large projects. Working together, the EaglE Fund and the Forward in Faith campaign, collectively referred to as the Comprehensive Campaign, will raise funds to transform current facilities into new spaces for students to learn, meet, and compete, while allowing the school to continue investing in programs, faculty education and appreciation, and tuition assistance.HOW does the comprehensive campaign work?Any member of the POPCS community may make a gift to the EaglE Fund and/or Forward in Faith campaign at any time!

27As we wrap up the 2022-2023 school year—a year in which we celebrated many accomplish-ments “As One” community—I am overwhelmed by how the Lord continues to work through, and bless, POPCS.Our school year theme from 1 John 1:7 focused our eorts on “walking in the light”—following Jesus and striving to glorify Him in all we do—to have fellowship with one another as forgiven and redeemed children of God. This year certainly showed that this focus made us a strong Christ-centered community and that God was at work here!During the year, we were blessed in so many ways, including:• 2 state championships for varsity men’s soccer and the Eaglettes drill team.• A successful year in our fine arts program, including state-level theatre, choir, and drumline recognitions.• A first-time ‘Blue Banner’ win for our RoboPOP robotics team.• Multiple academic competition winners at both the Middle and Lower School levels. • Daily serving our littlest Eagles in both the ELC and Preschool. • Most importantly – witnessing the work of the Holy Spirit in 8 student baptisms!Additionally, our faculty and sta continued to walk in the light, ensuring every student was Welcomed, Known, Connected, and Prepared, through their leadership in and out of the class-room, getting to know each student’s personali-ty, strengths, and challenges, setting them up for success, and guaranteeing they received God’s word every single day.As we look forward to the 2023-2024 school year, I am excited to see how God plans to con-tinue to advance His mission here. Our new stu-dent enrollment and re-enrollment numbers are at the highest we’ve seen in years, and we are excited to be adding additional sections to our Preschool and Lower School grade levels, giv-ing us a bright future and the chance to share the Gospel with many more Eagle students and their families. Our most significant change will come as we welcome Mr. Corey Moss as our new Associ-ate Head of School. Mr. Moss, in partnership with our principals and directors, will evalu-ate and improve our student experience. This will allow me to focus more on the Advance-ment portion of my position, as your continued generosity allows us to fulfill the goals of our strategic plan and the EaglE Fund/Forward in Faith campaign.I give thanks for the fellowship we share in Jesus and the gifts and talents that you each bring to our community. God bless your summer! Go Eagles!Dr. Jeremy Lowe Head of SchoolEagle Family,27
28s POPCS strives to expand and improve the educational experience of its students, the school has frequently turned to look among its existing POPCS community first to find gifted educators with valuable experience in the school system. The recent hiring of a new Associate Head of School, Corey Moss, exemplifies this strategy. With over 20 years of professional involvement in schools, Mr. Moss’ passion for strong Christian education has only grown throughout the years. For the last 21 years, he has served as a teacher, principal, and head of school at St. Paul Thorndale and Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas. During this time, he has cultivated impressive campus communities by recruiting an amazing team of educators to foster growth. Mr. Moss has also overseen the process of diversifying learn-ing opportunities with a customizable education framework, including options for foreign languages, advanced academ-ics, creative skills, and more. In addition to these accomplish-ments, he has overseen upgrades in school security measures and significantly increased enrollment and advancement. In the fall of 2022, Corey Moss and his wife, Melanie, en-rolled their children, Cohen (Grade 11), Libby (Grade 10), and Micah (Grade 8), in POPCS. Less than a year later, POPCS Head of School, Dr. Jeremy Lowe, approached Mr. Moss about a job opening. After seeing how his kids thrived in the POPCS program, and feeling that this was the path God had laid for him, Mr. Moss joined the team at POPCS. When asked what led him to make the de-cision, he credits POPCS’ “in-credible learning community” and the school’s kind and wel-coming families, as well as the strength of the sta body. Most MEET ASSOCIATE HEAD OF SCHOOL COREY MOSSof all, as Mr. Moss anticipates the uncertainty of stepping into this new role, he maintains faith that God will guide his steps and decisions for His sole purpose. His constant prayer is that he will maintain a servant’s heart as he does his best to support the mission of the school. In addition to his commitment to Christ-centered edu-cation and ministry, Mr. Moss’ work ethos includes a strong focus on child development. This is due to evidence demon-strating that supporting early development can significant-ly influence the course of a child’s life. By utilizing methods that help children grow in their values and character, Mr. Moss believes that education can play a part in instilling resilience and an emphasis on service that he sees as ex-tremely important for later in life. “I believe in the ability and importance of schools to foster emotional intelligence and a growth mindset that focuses on the strengths of indi-viduals, fostering grit and building a tool kit that will propel kids into successful futures,” shares Mr. Moss. It’s clear that Mr. Moss has developed strengths and values that enable him to build others up through his in-teractions. Describing himself as highly relational, he en-joys teamwork and “building a happy community” through collaboration. “I feel that it’s important to be strategic and intentional in communication and setting goals,” he says. More importantly, he does his best to remain positive and energetic as he navigates challenges and achievements alike. In addition to these remarkable qualities, Head of School Dr. Jeremy Lowe observes, “Mr. Moss brings over 20 years of Christian teaching and leadership experience to this position. He enjoys knowing students, families, and teachers and serving them through Christ-centered edu-cation. He communicates easily and has a great sense of humor. He is passionate about leading teams through rela-tionships and people-connecting, which allows him to build learning communities that are focused on Christ-following and committed to excellence.” With his dedication to hard work and resilience, Mr. Moss will bring fresh inspiration to the educational community at POPCS, and we simply couldn’t be luckier to have him on our team. 29he concept for the POPCS Eagle Suc-cess Center (ESC) was developed out of an identified need to expand the Academic Support Program (ASP) that serves the growing population of students with learning dierenc-es. POPCS built the ESC space in the summer of 2022, which houses the ASP and the lower school gifted and talented program, and hired Kelly Mor-ris as Director of the Eagle Success Center. Kelly was “all in” from the beginning. When talking about the ESC, Kelly notes that, “Many schools are not prepared to adequately address learning disparities, so Prince of Peace is unique in its willingness to create a solution that works for neu-rodiverse students.” Thanks to a dedicated “can do” atti-tude from the POPCS administration, including Dr. Jeremy Lowe, Betsy Graham, and Ashley Ashcraft, the program for students with learning dierences has grown to serve more students every year since its creation. The ESC’s emotional core is oriented toward celebrating dierences in the same manner that Jesus did, by “loving people who are dierent from us and bringing them in from the fringe,” remarks Kelly. This perspective pushes POPCS to be a mirror of God’s church and to reflect the many dif-ferent ways leaders can serve others. Kelly strongly believes that POPCS should help students to uniquely thrive by in-tentionally pouring into their cups. The work taking place at the ESC celebrates neurodiversity and learning dierenc-es in students while providing support that can help them achieve in school and life. The focus is not just academics but rather the whole child, as evidenced by the observations of one ASP middle school parent. “The middle school ASP pro-gram not only provided appropriate academic support and accountability, but also prioritized really knowing him as a person and tapping into his strengths,” she maintains. The ESC is characterized by a focus on individualized education, an approach that many private schools are nota-bly not yet prepared to provide. Even with the obstacles and challenges, Kelly is proud that POPCS is willing to choose what’s “right and beautiful” and to lean on God’s grace when things get dicult. The brave choice to meet the complex needs of a subsection of students communicates that ev-eryone is distinctly valuable, in our school and to God. For kids with learning dierences specifically, school can be a challenging experience of misunderstanding and being mis-understood. In the ESC, teachers strive to overcome these misunderstandings. Kelly knows that with the help of our exceptional POPCS sta, we can help kids understand and grow into their individual learning styles. Led by caring and experienced educators including Melinda Smith, Kar-in Rogers, and Kelsi Walker, the goal is for the program to propel students from discouragement in classroom settings into enthusiastic and out-of-the box learning. As one upper school ASP student reflected, “The first thing Mrs. Rogers said to me when I found out I had ADHD was ‘God gave you an amazing brain that just works dierently.’ All of a sudden, TEagle Success Center
30I felt special and unique, and it was ex-citing.”Programming provided in the ESC functions to support students by meeting them where they are, working mostly in small groups, and filling in unique gaps experienced by students. In the lower school, the program in-cludes small group remediation, where diagnostic testing is utilized to create a learning profile that then guides ed-ucation plans. This strategy focuses on targeted needs for individuals and is supplemented with evidence-based, small-group English Language Arts and math instruction for kids with learning dierences. In upper school and middle school, the strategy shifts a bit to include an academic support class, executive function growth, as well as time management and organi-zation skills. In addition, the center is staed with dyslexia therapist, Vicki Littleton, and speech therapist, Ni-cole Rossen, who provide regular and frequent sessions to students. As the parent of one student in the program shared, “The middle school ASP not only provided appropriate academic support and accountability, but also prioritized really knowing him as a person and tapping into his strengths.”Kelly’s work with the ESC is cen-tered around her personal and profes-sional passion for neurodiverse kids. She holds a strong conviction that we are all made in God’s image and loves teaching kids about God’s craftsman-ship by helping them learn about the unique ways that He has created their brains, each of them a “fearfully and wonderfully made” design. She holds two degrees in the field of education, as well as several decades of experience teaching and working with special ed-ucation programs. At Preston Hollow Presbyterian School, Kelly fell in love with the process of co-creating learn-ing success with neurodiverse children. Later, as a mother to two special kids with learning dierences, God allowed Kelly to apply the skills of empathy, patience, and acceptance with her chil-dren. While Kelly notes that this expe-rience was emotionally challenging, she is grateful for the chance to lean into her values of celebrating diversity and supporting kids where they are. She is grateful for the POPCS educational ex-perience, where her own children have been able to receive the support that they need to achieve their goals. In her time at POPCS, Kelly has con-ducted widespread evaluations to set strategic goals for the upcoming year. The program is now planning for an “es-sentials track” in the upper school that will utilize dierent strategies and pac-ing to meet the needs of neurodiverse students. The ESC also started a Gifted and Talented Program led by Jeni Stu-art that allows qualifying students to be taught at a pace that is more natural to their learning style. In the upcoming years, Kelly hopes that the program will gain more facility space while strategi-cally utilizing technology to meet learn-ing goals. She also envisions the “essen-tials track” expanding to cover more subjects for students. Kelly’s bravery, commitment, and expertise in both the professional and personal realms mark her as an in-credible asset to POPCS and the ESC, but she recognizes that this process of expansion has been a collective eort in the truest sense. “With so many in-credible educators on board, the ESC has been able to support a significant number of students, and the hope is that the capacity of the ESC will grow even further in the upcoming years,” she explains. By continuing to invest in early evidence-based intervention, the ESC, under Kelly’s direction, aims to consistently find ways to serve our kids better. Parents and grandparents of ASP students are seeing the dierence it is making for their students. Reflecting on what makes the ESC exceptional, one grandmother of an ASP student shares:“Of all the things we appreciate about POPCS, the ESC is at the top of the list! When we enrolled our two grandchildren, we knew that there would be challenges for them academically. We were drawn to POPCS because we knew accommo-dations would be oered accord-ing to their needs. What we didn’t know was how very tailored those accommodations would prove to be. From help with executive func-tion to specific learning dierences such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, Melinda Smith and Karin Rogers have a great ability to see the ‘whole child’ in planning accommodations according to strengths and weak-nesses. With the addition of Kelly Morris, we have seen the program become more intentional and fo-cused with opportunities such as the “essentials track” for middle school math. As we go into the next season of life with middle and upper school-ers, we have confidence that their academic needs will be met and they will continue to thrive.”We couldn’t agree more.
31hen Mark and Jennifer Campbell enrolled their son Walker (Class of 2023) in POPCS, they looked for ways for him to connect. When they heard about the robotics program, Mark thought it sounded great for Walker but didn’t feel he himself could get involved in some-thing new. Nevertheless, when Mark was asked after the informational meeting to be the lower school assistant coach, he agreed, knowing the team needed him. The next year, he signed up to help with a team for Holden (Class of 2018), his older son. With no training or experience, Mark had to learn everything from scratch just like the kids. But a decade later, he is still going as a central volunteer with the program. When asked about his time mentoring in the POPCS robotics program, Mark says, “It’s a lot of work and a lot of fun.” During his ten-ure, Mark has helped students learn about en-gineering and technology related to creating robots. His support for the unique passions of students in the program has propelled gradu-ates into incredible careers at notable scientific institutions such as NASA. He also understands the value of this program, not only in furthering scientific knowledge, but as an important so-cial outlet for students to connect and discov-er themselves. Referring to the relationships built with students in the program, Mark states plainly, “You can’t manufacture that.”Mark honestly admits he is not an engineer, but he didn’t let that stop him from becoming a valuable part of the POPCS robotics team. He had a strong interest in engineering since his youth when his grandmother would give him alarm clocks to dismantle and put back together. Since joining the team, Mark’s technical knowledge has developed greatly throughout the years, and he now describes robotics as his “niche” within the school. He sees his time in the program as a large part of his own education and ex-presses gratitude to the POPCS community for this important ex-perience in his life. Even after 10 years of hands-on experience, Mark continues to describe himself as a fellow learner with the students. He re-calls a moment when a student proposed a simple solution that not even the adults in the room had thought of. He goodhearted-ly reflected, “Yeah, the kids just get it.” With his servant’s heart, he often prefers to follow the students’ lead. This approach has created a genuinely egalitarian learning en-vironment in the program.Ultimately, Mark says being a part of the pro-gram has been life-changing. He sees the chal-lenges as clear opportunities for learning, as he gets to witness the “aha” moments of elation and excitement when a student figures some-thing out. Mark’s ability to be present with stu-dents, in moments of success and failure alike, highlights his consistency and determination to uplift those around him. Mark’s grateful heart allows him to serve his community with true dedication. When discuss-ing the experience of receiving this award, Mark can’t help but highlight the people with whom he shares the credit, including his wife, Jennifer, for allowing him to be a stay-at-home dad and volun-teer. Mark expresses appreciation for the sta and the tight-knit community they’ve built by sharing a story about one teacher’s eorts to welcome him and his son into the school. He adds, “Many mem-bers of the robotics team contribute to make the program what it is today.” As for himself, he just hopes to “leave things better than he found them.” Being chosen to receive this award recognizes his incredible success in doing exactly that. RAY FRICKE’S LEGACY LIVES ON IN THE GOOD SHEPHERD AWARDGiven to those whose commitment, service, achievements, involvement, and passion for POPCS have made a generational impact on our community, the Ray Fricke Good Shepherd Award is presented each spring at commencement. The award was instituted in 2013 when it was presented to Ray’s wife, Marlene Fricke, in his honor. Ray Fricke served as principal of POPCS from 1991-1998 and is remembered for his servant heart and lasting dedication to our school.WMark CampbellImpacting Through InnovationKrystal, Micah, Keesha, and TyieshaWalker, Jennifer, Mark, and Holden Campbell
32Some would call Keesha Koehler’s move to POPCS the result of divine intervention. But Keesha describes it as being born out of her faith in God’s divine timing. She had been bringing her kids to VBS at Prince of Peace Lu-theran Church for a few years when she decided to enroll her youngest at POPCS. One day, as Keesha sat in her car outside the school, she prayed that God would help her understand what her next career step was. Listening to God’s voice, she decided to reach out to POPCS and see what role might be available for her. She contacted Brenda Porter, a leader in the lower school, who told her that they had been praying for someone to fill a position in the infant In education, the apple has a long history of being associated with knowledge and appreciation. In days past, students would often show appreciation for their teachers by gifting them an apple. In the same way, the POPCS Apple Award is presented to faculty members who consistently exceed the expectations of peers, families, and administration each day as they perform their jobs.Apple Award recipients are committed to the mission of POPCS, demonstrate a strong faith in Jesus Christ, and have a servant’s heart for all those with whom they meet. These faculty members embody the rallying cry that all students should feel Wel-comed, Known, Connected, and Prepared at POPCS. This year’s recipients of the Apple Award are Early Learning Center (ELC) Director, Keesha Koehler, and up-per school English teacher, Sharla Schimelpfenig.KeeshaKoehlerKrystal, Micah, Keesha, and Tyiesharoom. Keesha took the job, and just a month after she started at POPCS, she was amazed to learn that her previous place of employment had closed. This “faith first, details later” per-spective is apparent in everything Kee-sha does at our school. She quotes Mat-thew 6:33—“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”—as her guiding principle in the work she does. To Keesha, spiritual guidance is just as valuable as the academic prepa-ration she gives to kids. “Some of my most important moments have been seeing the Lord lead families to church after getting involved with the ELC program,” she says.By trusting God’s plan, Keesha has been able to grow with the ELC to first become a leader in the infant and preschool rooms, and now, the current director of the whole pro-gram. As a leader, Keesha knows that exuding God’s grace is the most im-portant aspect of building communi-ty. The spaces that Keesha leads are filled with the “no strings attached” unconditional love that flows from God through her. Stating, “I cannot do it without God,” Keesha attributes her immense impact to her Savior. It’s this commitment to Christ and all those around her that makes Keesha the ideal Apple Award recipient.SharlaSchimelpfenigIn her upper school English classes, Dr. Sharla Schimelpfenig (aection-ately referred to as Dr. S by students) utilizes characters and stories from lit-erature to point back to the Christian faith. 33In the 22 years he has been a part of POPCS, Chad Henke has occupied too many roles to count, including athletic di-rector, principal, teacher, and coach. What-ever job he is performing, Chad believes that having a servant’s heart means open-ing yourself up to wherever God may lead you and being enthusiastically willing to assist wherever help is needed. His work focuses on “putting others before himself” and in doing so, Chad consistently demon-strates the essence of the Servant Leader award.Chad and his wife, Heidi, began work-ing at POPCS in 2000, becoming part of the team whose goal was to expand the school’s athletic programming to Grades 9 - 12. In this uncharted territory, they quickly learned to trust God’s plan for the school. During this time, Chad also be-came involved with the creation of a new athletic program, which he has poured into ever since. Even as he demonstrated faith in whatever role he stepped into, Chad’s passion for athletics has persisted over the years. With his colleague and friend, Alex Peña, he has worked to make the program an enriching and character-building expe-rience. He believes that sports can teach kids valuable lessons about “being a team player, respecting your teammates and op-ponents, and being humble and gracious in moments of success and failure.”Chad and his family were initially drawn in by the tight-knit community that POPCS provided. To him, the ex-perience felt less like a traditional school dynamic and more like a home, a senti-ment that became even more solidified as his kids started school at POPCS. Chad loves the unique perspective of seeing his kids grow through their connections with Christian educators and lifelong friends. He is comforted as a parent by the sense of closeness at POPCS, which means that kids “aren’t just a number.” This unique support our school provides is thanks to faithful team players who exemplify ser-vant leadership like Chad Henke.Chad HenkeServant Leader AwardThe POPCS Servant Leader Award recognizes a sta member who person-ifies the very essence of Christian leadership. Their unwavering commit-ment to leading by example has inspired countless individuals and fostered the Welcomed, Known, Connected, and Prepared culture at POPCS. They demonstrate faithful humility, integrity, and compassion in all they do, con-sistently going above and beyond their role to uplift and support others.Kaley, Payton, Karli, Heidi, Gunner, and Chad HenkeDr. S has been a wonderful inuence on my girls. Her toughness and love for them was more than my husband and I could ever ask for. We appreciate her for her Christian character and for being a servant of Jesus. We were truly blessed to have her in our daughters’ lives.”—POPCS Faculty MemberS finds it eortless to make connec-tions to the biblical worldview that she holds. Her teaching philosophy is guid-ed by Romans 12:2, which says “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” She fondly recalls feed-back from one student, who stated that he would be a better person and family member because of the lessons extracted from one of her classes. Dr. S is known for the strong college preparation she provides to her stu-dents, many of whom have returned to POPCS to thank her for the knowl-edge and skills she imparted to them. With experience teaching at both high school and college levels, Dr. S chal-lenges and equips students for their futures. Even so, she knows that the most important thing is that students feel valued, regardless of their perfor-mance in her class. For her, “the grade does not determine how I feel about them.” The continual respect that flows through Dr. S’s work mirrors how God provides unconditional love for us even at our worst. When asked what her favorite thing about working at POPCS has been, Dr. S replies that it has been “seeing the students’ growth firsthand.” She has been grateful to work in a school where everyone’s needs are addressed, and nobody is left behind. Even though the literary content can be challeng-ing, Dr. S is rewarded by students’ trust that their knowledge will grow in her classroom setting. Her compassion, wisdom, and commitment to learning allow Dr. S to propel students to their fullest potential, and her commitment to excellence and her heart for her stu-dents leave POPCS a better place. Chad is one of the most servant-hearted individuals I know. After 22 years here, he still consistently pours everything he has into POPCS. He completely understands ministry, always going above and beyond in whatever is asked of him. Whether driving buses, moving elds, opening and closing facilities every weekend, or shopping for school events, he serves humbly and somehow manages to elevate everyone around him.”—POPCS Faculty Member““33
his past spring, the Lord decided it was time for Tammy Lawson to come home. Earlier in the evening of the night the beloved POPCS teacher, mom, and friend went to be with the Lord, she had done what she loved most— serving others through her church’s ministry at an event for special needs families. Tammy loved using her time and energy to pour into others. The many recipients of her ser-vice included students, colleagues, family, and the innumer-able plants in her garden. On measuring the size of Tam-my’s ministry and impact, her daughter, Joanna, says, “We will only know the true impact when we get to heaven.”Tammy’s journey at Prince of Peace started when she and her husband, Fred, decided to move their children, Jo-anna (Class of 2006) and Jon (Class of 2013), to a school where they could learn about the Bible and be encouraged by other believers. Tammy began teaching in the preschool but would later move on to teach elementary and middle school computer classes, eventually landing in the front oce of the upper school as oce manager. Tammy’s in-fluence at our school spanned all ages, and her hard work and impact on her students later inspired Joanna to also become a teacher at POPCS in the fine arts department. While Tammy was initially uncertain about working in the same area as Joanna, Joanna saw clearly how working with Tammy became a huge blessing that created a daily routine of quality time over lunch. In each of her roles, Tammy was known for her quick, sarcastic wit and deep rapport with her students. She was a speaker of truth, especially truth that others might shy away from, and especially with students she felt needed In Memory of Tammy LawsonTa little truth, a trait that ultimately endeared her to upper school students. Tammy fostered connection and built re-lationships with students on the fringe that allowed her to support them in making the best possible life decisions. She was motivated and organized and put an emphasis on her own continued learning. Yet, her passion for educating was just one way that Tammy influenced the lives of those around her.In addition to being an incredible educator, Tammy was an avid prayer warrior who fought for the spiritual well- being of all of those around her. Tammy diligently journaled her conversations with the Lord, where she specifically named individuals and prayed for the exact struggles they were facing. It was in this same journal that she would also write down messages and words of wisdom from God that she would bravely share with people whenever she got the chance. Throughout her life, Tammy started prayer groups at her church, led Bible studies, and ministered to countless individuals. Her boldness and priority in leading a Godly life inspired the Prince of Peace community to faith every day. Tammy’s absence will leave a huge hole in the fabric of POPCS. Co-worker and friend, Diane Petersen, says, “Tam-my was a beautiful person. From our time teaching together in preschool and for so many years in lower school, she was a Christ-centered, servant-hearted, woman of prayer. She had a passion for education and learning, always working for the best for her students. I learned a lot working alongside her. Her sense of humor and adventurous spirit always brought much joy along the way. Like so many, I was blessed greatly by her, and I move faith forward in her memory.” Moving for-ward is exactly what Tammy did but those touched by her will always have wonderful memories of her and a special place in their hearts for this amazing, fun, quick-witted ser-vant of God.Jonathan Lawson and his wife, Maddie, Tammy, Fred, Joanna, and Michael Lawson34
