Clubhouses throughout the world continue to provide life-changing support to thousands of men and women living with mental illness and are rich with recovery-oriented opportunities that help people reclaim their futures. In this report, you will see that Clubhouse International as a leading global mental health organization is also on the rise. Our global network continues to grow with new Clubhouses as well as new public and private support for our work. In 2023, our membership rose to a new high of 351 Clubhouses and we had more Clubhouses and individuals participating in our training programs than ever before. We set new records for Clubhouses achieving accreditation through our quality assurance program. Not only are we growing in size and recognition, but our Clubhouses are getting stronger and helping more people living with mental illness again this year. We also devoted a great deal of time to creating a new strategic plan. We took a hard look at ourselves and how we can accelerate growth to expand the number of people who benefit from membership in a Clubhouse community. Our new strategic plan is focused on building our capacity to increase our advocacy, training, and quality assurance programs, raise awareness and understanding about our work, and develop new partnerships with other mental health advocates. This work lays the foundation to support our long-term vision of a Clubhouse in every community. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2024, we are enthusiastic about the future. } RISING UP ENSURING QUALITY PROGRAMS Our Faculty for Clubhouse Development answered a growing demand and conducted more Accreditations in 2023 than ever before. Nearly 50% of our trained Faculty are people with the lived experience of mental illness. Clubhouse Accreditation is a comprehensive objective peer review process that ensures fidelity to the widely accepted International Standards for Clubhouse Programs ™ and demonstrates a Clubhouse’s commitment to excellence. Accredited Clubhouses continually demonstrate superior recovery-oriented outcomes for participating members. We welcomed 17 new Clubhouses into our network in 2023. Two each from France and Norway, one from Sweden, and 12 in the United States: Washington (4); Florida (2); Massachusetts (2); North Carolina; Ohio; Pennsylvania and Wyoming (1 each). The Clubhouse International network is a vast global community providing support and technical assistance that directly enhances the quality of services for individuals living with mental illness. Clubhouse International facilitates growth, innovation, and connections among member Clubhouses while working to promote and incubate new Clubhouse communities around the world. We provided extensive ongoing coaching to more than 25 developing Clubhouses and maintained communication with another 35 budding startup groups. A new pilot program funded by The Duke Endowment was launched to promote Clubhouse expansion in the Carolinas, USA. New partnerships with mental health advocates and public and private funding partners are being developed across the state of South Carolina with additional opportunities in North Carolina beginning to emerge. Across the US and around the world, we provided consultation to multiple national and state government mental health agencies interested in developing Clubhouses. thanks to significant philanthropic support: a new pilot for expansion in South Carolina, USA, and a new initiative to improve employment outcomes for US Clubhouses. Both are 3-year projects. • We expanded our work with the Coalitions and Associations Committee as part of a continued effort to strengthen the Clubhouse network. • We achieved record-breaking attendance at the USA Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. • We developed a new ambitious but achievable Strategic Plan to strengthen our organization and seize the moment to accelerate Clubhouse expansion. RISING UP LEARNING TOGETHER The demand for our training programs provided via our network of 12 global Training Centers was at an all-time high. We saw more Clubhouses and individuals trained in a single year than ever before. Clubhouse International provides direct training for new Clubhouse startup groups and organizes educational conferences and seminars, and conducts multiple presentations in mental health forums every year. Our Corporate Partners program led to a generous anonymous donor sponsoring a new 3-year Employment Training Program which provides group and 1:1 educational support for member Clubhouses aimed at increasing paid employment opportunities for Clubhouse members. celebrate our 30th Anniversary in 2024, Clubhouse International made great strides in 2023 growing the awareness of the Clubhouse Model and our global network. Key to everything we do, including advocacy, is the member voice because we believe that those who are living with mental illness are their own best advocates. Clubhouse International partners with Clubhouses and Clubhouse members to be an active and vocal advocate at the local, state, regional, national and international levels for the issues and rights of people living with mental illness, including advocating for funding of Accredited Clubhouses. Some highlights from 2023 include: • Joined forces with World Federation for Mental Health and 20 Clubhouses to develop a Community WORKS World Mental Health Day campaign that celebrated the transformative power of community in the Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation; members and staff work side-by-side to support, foster and encourage recovery and to help end isolation. • Developed and disseminated our new Communications Toolkit; a valuable resource designed to support Accredited Clubhouses in developing effective communications that raise visibility and understanding of the Clubhouse Model as a key part of recovery for people living with mental illness. • Joined MTV’s Mental Health Action Day as a Founding Partner and partnered with AILAND to create our new dedicated virtual space where participants had the opportunity to access resources about the Clubhouse Model and mental illness, and to participate in discussions and interactive activities related to mental health. • Inaugurated a longitudinal research project with the University of Southern California (USC) that collected Clubhouse outcome data and developed a presentation template and marketing tool that demonstrates the comprehensive positive impact of the Clubhouse Model on mental health, community engagement, and individual well-being. • Launched a US-national advocacy campaign, Healing Minds, Powering Communities, in partnership with Fountain House and other Clubhouses and US advocacy organizations, that advocates for: community-based approaches to address mental illness (e.g., Clubhouse); increased funding for these solutions; and importantly, centers people with lived experience as active participants in that change. • Our CEO, Joel Corcoran and Mosaic Clubhouse (London, UK) member, Sarah Flanagan, presented a Master Class on the Clubhouse Model at the first-ever Recovery Mental Health Summit held in Barcelos, Portugal. • Were featured on the eighth season of PBS’s Emmy-nominated US public television program, Healthy Minds; CEO, Joel Corcoran, speaks with Dr. Borenstein, President and CEO, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, about the work of Clubhouse International providing accessible recovery opportunities for people living with mental illness around the world by integrating the Clubhouse Model into community-based systems of care. The episode explores the unique strengths of the Clubhouse Model. • Collaborated with Temple University, PA, USA to bring its Community Inclusion initiative, which seeks to increase community participation amongst young adults with serious mental illness, to Clubhouse members living in the United States. • Partnered with the National Council for Mental Well-being Virtual “Hill Day” in October, advocating for better funding for mental health services and providing solutions and strategies for maximizing advocacy efforts in the US. • Increased awareness of our working partnership with Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and shared how Clubhouses can foster their state relationships to support Clubhouses by hosting a Plenary session at the USA Clubhouse Conference that featured key officials from the state of Utah and SAMHSA Region 8.
