BASKETBALL COACHES 2023 24 Greg Zuffelato Varsity Head Coach With a coaching tenure spanning over 25 years Coach Greg Zu elato brings a wealth of experience and a passion for player development to the Santa Barbara High School boys basketball program Greg has left an indelible mark on every team he has coached from youth leagues to college level competition Greg s coaching journey began at Santa Ynez High School where he served as the head coach from 1997 to 2000 During his tenure he led the team to its first CIF playo game in over a decade showcasing his ability to foster success and resilience His commitment to the game and his players caught the attention of Cal Poly where he served as an assistant coach for the men s basketball team in 2000 and 2001 Returning to the high school ranks Greg took the helm at Caruthers High in the Central Valley from 2004 to 2008 In his inaugural season he guided the team to a flawless 14 0 league record and propelled them to the CIF Central Section semifinals This success highlighted his strategic acumen and leadership skills laying the foundation for a culture of excellence Greg s deep understanding of the game is rooted in his collegiate playing days He played at Fresno Pacific University under the tutelage of the legendary John Moore who later became the head coach at Westmont College Later in his college career Greg transferred to Fresno State where he played for Ron Adams currently an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors Basketball is more than a game for the Zu elato family it s a way of life Greg s father Bob boasts a coaching career spanning over 50 years with three decades in the NBA His brother Scott serves as the Vice President of Philanthropy for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame The family connection extends to his wife Kim who is an assistant coach at Santa Barbara High and his daughter Emma a CIF title winner in indoor volleyball now excelling in beach volleyball at Cal Poly His son Luke is a junior on the Santa Barbara High basketball team and is one of the most prolific scores in school history In addition to his role at Santa Barbara High School he is also a founding member of Santa Barbara House of House which in the 501 c 3 under which the club basketball program Hustle Hoops is run Greg is the Program Director and coaches in the club program The program involves over 200 families during the club basketball season Greg s impact at Santa Barbara High extends beyond the basketball court As an assistant varsity coach and a member of the Career Tech Ed Sports Medicine Pathway he is deeply invested in the holistic development of his students Former Santa Barbara Principal Elise Simmons emphasizes Greg s commitment to education and coaching Coach Zu elato is an educator and coach who cares deeply about his students both o and on the court As the head coach of the Santa Barbara High School boys basketball program Coach Greg Zu elato is honored to be part of the school s storied tradition His coaching philosophy centers on the development and growth of players not only as athletes but as individuals With an exceptional group of players and a tradition second to none Coach Zu elato is poised to lead the Dons to new heights on the court and in the classroom The legacy continues and the Santa Barbara community eagerly anticipates the next chapter under Coach Zu elato s guidance 4
BASKETBALL COACHES 2023 24 Chris Hangtin Varsity ASSISTANT Coach Coach Hantgin has been coaching in Santa Barbara since 1994 10 years as Boys Varsity Head Coach at SMHS 5 years as Boys Varsity Head Coach at SBHS and 5 years as Girls Varsity Head Coach at SM He has also been on sta at the prestigious Snow Valley Basketball School every summer since 2004 Most recently he served as Assistant Men s Basketball Coach at Saddleback CC Mission Viejo CA 2020 23 He is married to long time San Marcos Head Track Coach Marilyn Hantgin and is father to son Thomas 24 and daughter Taylor 22 Jonny Wilson Varsity ASSISTANT Coach Coach Wilson played high school basketball at Calabasas High School following his family s move to LA Under Coach Russel White s guidance he had a 38 point 14 rebound game during the CIF playo s led scoring at the Ventura County All Star game and was asked to play in the San Fernando Valley of the Stars game Recruited to Westmont College Wilson under Coach John Moore mastered the Princeton o ense secured a starting role and was voted captain in his senior year despite two years on the IR His leadership propelled the Warriors to the National Championship Tournament earning him the NAIA National Champions of Character Award Recognized twice as the Most Inspirational Player at Westmont Wilson stayed close to the game and transitioned his leadership from the court to the corporate telecom world as one of the first employees at DHD com There he spearheaded the international business growth sector all over the globe helping secure the INC 500 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America recognition four times and currently serves as a VP Partner Most importantly he is married to his wife Alexis of 15 years with three children Zoe 9 Julian James 5 and Lincoln 18 months Juan Villarruel Varsity ASSISTANT Coach Juan a Santa Barbara native grew up with a passion for basketball leading him to be a successful member of the San Marcos High School Boys Varsity team After graduating he translated his passion for playing into a local coaching career He has excelled as a skills coach and has been part of the coaching sta for Santa Barbara High School winning back to back League Championships 2018 2019 2019 2020 Juan has coached for several local AAU programs and is currently a member of the coaching sta for Santa Barbara Hustle Hoops a local club organization In the o season he spends time training closely with NBA Euroleague and NCAA Division I players Tyler Shyrock JV HEAD Coach Tyler has coached at the youth and high school levels in some capacity for over 22 years He began coaching youth sports at the age of 18 and immediately knew it was something he wanted to do in the future Tyler is also a NSCA CPT trainer which allows him to coach and educate others regarding their personal health and fitness needs Tyler is currently the head JV coach as well as an assistant varsity coach at Santa Barbara High School He also coaches for Hustle Hoops Basketball Club and is a founding member of the Santa Barbara House of Hustle A 501C3 is devoted to helping the youth of our community to reach their full potential socially physically and mentally Tyler is a Project Engineer at Weddle Industries in Goleta He is married to Dons former head softball coach and Santa Barbara High graduate Tori and has 2 children Tobin 17 boys varsity point guard and Tessa 15 Dons Track Field He is also a parent guardian for Julian Espinoza 5
BASKETBALL COACHES 2023 24 Rich Begert JV HEAD Coach Coach Rich Begert is a retired tech executive and started volunteer coaching 10 years ago 6 years at Bellevue Christian High School in WA and for the last 4 years as asst JV coach at SBHS Rich has been married to Leslie for 40 years and they have two adult sons Taylor is married with 2 grandkids in Santa Monica and Blake who has special needs and autism lives in WA Jimmy Owens JV Assistant Coach Coach Jimmy grew up in Santa Barbara He played on the San Marcos HS basketball team and continued his basketball career at San Jose City College He has been working with youth basketball for nearly a decade here in town and helps run the SB School of Skills basketball camps held throughout the year He is currently coaching with the Hustle Hoops Program and continues to inspire and support his players on and o the court Pat Davis Frosh Soph Head Coach Coach Davis has been coaching for over 35 years As a teen he worked for John Wooden Jerry West Rick Barry as well as Michael Jordan and he is currently working for the Los Angeles Lakers for 23 years He started coaching high school in 1987 at Hueneme High School Bishop Diego Santa Barbara High Saint Bonaventure and now back at Santa Barbara High for a second stint Coach Davis has also coached professionally for 7 tours in China Coach Davis is married to Susan Houlihan Davis who has been the head trainer at SBCC for almost 30 years Coach Davis has two children Kirstyn Freeman Davis and a son Stephen Davis a former SB Dons player currently playing at Cal Lutheran University Nathan Ridgell Frosh Soph AssT Coach Coach Ridgell has coached and trained athletes for over 12 years A proud native of Santa Barbara Coach Ridgell is actively involved in the community an entrepreneur a board member of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table and a former collegiate athlete in football and track at SBCC and UCSB Nathan and Andrea his wife of 23 years are proud parents of Kaden Kashton and Izara 6
