It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2023-2024 season of the Lively Arts. As you will see in this brochure, this will be a season of exciting events and one thatcelebrates and brings to Indiana cultures from around the world. We are excited for theopportunity to share this season with you, and we hope to welcome you to our variousperformance, gallery, and museum spaces across the campus. We are particularly pleasedalso to celebrate and welcome you to the many performances and exhibitions of ourfaculty and students, along with prominent guest artists.As we prepare for next year’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of IUP, we look forward in the near future to sharing news of the many celebrations to come. Since then, Ritterhas seen his uncompromisinginterpretations of film, writers,musicians, and politicians work theirway into the collective Americanpsyche.Never relegating himself to a singleformat, his work is seen not only innumerous national and internationalpublications, but also in Broadwayadvertising campaigns, corporate artinstallations, product packaging, andgallery exhibitions (NYC, SanFrancisco, and Pittsburgh). HK Miller & Mark Altrogge, “Thenand Now: Alumni Exhibition”October 23 - November 24Annex GalleryFree Harold K. Miller was born in 1950 andgrew up in southern New Jersey. Heattended Indiana University ofPennsylvania, earning a B.A in Art in1972 and a Masters in Printmaking andEducation in 1975. After surviving 32years in the Pennsylvania public schoolsystem, Harold retired in 2006 andbegan painting full time. Harold residesin Indiana with his wife Susan and hasbeen influenced by the work of EdwardHopper, Winslow Homer, the Wyeths(N.C and Andrew), and Sidney Laurence.Mark Altrogge graduated from IUP in1972 with a degree in Art Education, andin 1979 earned his Masters Degree inPainting from IUP as well. Influenced byVincent Van Gogh and otherexpressionists, Mark uses rich colorsand rhythmic brushwork in his oilpaintings. Mark and his wife live inIndiana. They have five children, andfour grandchildren.Jeff Jones, "Abstracts"October 23 - November 24Kipp GalleryFree Jeff Jones is a painter, curator, andprofessor who lives in SouthwesternOhio. His work is represented by GalleriUrbane, Dallas, TX; Gallery IMA, Seattle,WA; Sarah Gormley Gallery, Columbus,OH: Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, New York,NY; TW Fine Art, Brisbane, Australia; and&Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland.He received a Masters of Fine Art fromthe University of Cincinnati’s renownedCollege of Design, Art, Architecture, andPlanning and a Bachelors of Fine Artfrom the University of Tennessee atChattanooga, both in Painting andDrawing. Jeffrey is a Professor of Art atthe University of Dayton where he headsthe Painting program. Logan Dandridge “MediaConvergence in Film”January 29 - February 23Kipp Gallery Free Logan Ryland Dandridge is a time-basedartist from Richmond, Virginia.Dandridge received a B.A. in mediastudies from the University of Virginia. In2018 he completed an M.F.A. from theUniversity of Oxford. Recently, Logan’swork has been supported by GirtonCollege, Ox-Bow School of Art, VirginiaMuseum of Fine Arts, Red Bull ArtsDetroit, 1708 Gallery, Anderson RanchArts Center, and the Museo UniversitarioArte Contemporáneo in Mexico. As forthe here and now, Logan is thinkingabout what Curtis Mayfield did forD’Angelo’s harmonies, Allen Iverson’scornrow braids, and the rustedChevrolet pickup truck at his late-grandfather's home.Loring Taoka, "Repetitions inAbstraction"March 11 - April 12Kipp GalleryFree Loring Taoka graduated with an MFAfrom the University of North Texas. Loring Taoka’s work is an exploration onthe digital and the physical. Thesespaces have become inextricably linkedin theory and practice with ideas abouttruth and authenticity, the known andunknown, and perception serving as acommon thread. Through this process,Taoka looks to the ways in which he isread and identified, the ways in which heidentifies himself, and works to abstractthese notions.Loring Taoka is a visual artist utilizing avariety of approaches and techniques toexplore notions of vagueness andauthenticity. Taoka’s work questions theact of perception and what happenswhen we are presented with precise, yetambiguous information. His work hasbeen featured in numerous venues suchas Western Exhibitions (Chicago, IL), CESGallery (Los Angeles, CA), and NewAmerican Paintings.KIPP &ANNEX GALLERY

EDUCATIONALOUTREACHArtsPath is one of 14 organizations in thestate that partner with the PennsylvaniaCouncil on the Arts in providing arts-in-education services to schools, seniorcenters, and other groups where the artsare used in an educational setting. TheArtsPath service region includesArmstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, andJefferson counties. Through primarilylong-term artist residencies, public andprivate school students, IUP students,and community members work directlywith a variety of professional performingand visual artists.As the arts-in-education program of theLively Arts, the ArtsPath mission centerson promoting high-quality artsexperiences, establishing the use of artin education across all curricula as apriority, offering regional services,generating community-wide and regionalsupport, and promoting the artsclassroom teacher as integral to astudent’s complete education.Through the Lively Arts Ovations series,regional students enjoy a performanceor hands-on activities such as aworkshop, master class, or lecture-demonstration, with a professionaltouring artist.For more information: 724-357-4565 artspath-info@iup.eduiup.edu/artspathNow in its 11th year, the IUP CommunityMusic School provides the region withprivate lessons, group music instruction,and ensemble opportunities on the IUPcampus at a variety of price points.The school supports and enhancespublic and private school musiceducation and performance both locallyand regionally and includes threeperformance ensembles.
