2022 Vintage Report2022 Vintage GuidePage 3The Essence of the 2022 Vintage2022 is a pure, high-quality vintage that produced intensely colored, attractively aromatic, enticing, youthful Pinot Noirs. Furthermore, theirstructured yet balanced acid and tannic backbones position these winesfor graceful aging. This vintage captivates with the same playful allure asits 2021 predecessor. Still, it boasts an added layer of depth and a robustsaline mineral structure that will require 5-10 years to fully reveal itspotential. These wines have a heightened concentration, their complexitytightly coiled at present, poised to unfold and relax in the coming months.Anticipate an effusive expression, potentially even more profound incomplexity than the heralded 2021s.The 2022 Chardonnays are spectacular examples of varietal and regionalexpression. They have a noble reductive mineral saline quality andsucculent natural acidity levels that frame and add structure to lovelycitrus fruit, floral aromas, and flavors. These wines will be delicious whenyoung and long-lived in the cellar.by Josh Bergström, Owner and Director of WinemakingA Unique Chapter in the Bergström StoryDrawing on my experience crafting 27 vintages in the Willamette Valley, this vintage stands unequivocally unique, seamlessly melding the bestelements of 2021's playfulness, 2019's acidity, 2017's salinity, and 2005'spower. I eagerly anticipate the unfolding of this vintage over time, and Iam firmly convinced that these wines will bring joy for many years. It isone of those serendipitous vintages where the growing season playedperfectly into our winemaking style.
Nature's Test: Navigating ChallengesThe 2022 growing season brought its own set of challenges, though inreflection, when has Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay notfaced adversity in the past 60 vintages? April 2022 marked a historicevent as Oregon endured its latest-ever spring frost. The frost affectedthe north valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which, having alreadyundergone bud break, displayed fragile green leafy tissue ready to grow. This unexpected frost led to a significant reduction of over 50% in ouroverall Chardonnay production potential. Initial estimates hinted at apotential 23-50% reduction in Pinot Noir. The spring frosts placed thegrowing season behind schedule by as many days as it takes the vines torecover from that event and regrow new secondary and tertiary buds. Our estimate placed this setback at upwards of 3+ weeks.2022 Vintage Report2022 Vintage GuidePage 5Thank you for being so supportive. Enjoy!- Josh BergströmA Smooth Course to a Triumphant HarvestEstimating a late October start to our 2022 harvest, skepticism lingeredregarding whether the historically fragile fall Oregonian weather couldmuster the strength to ripen such a late crop. We put all anxiety to restas we entered an exceptionally hot and sunny summer, gracefullyfollowed by an unusually warmer and drier September and October. Withgreat relief and thankfulness, we observed the fruit in every vineyardripening to levels we would not have dreamed of in April. Frost years in Oregon are rare, but they have stood as testaments tothis region's resilience, as each of those years still produced a greatvintage of wine. In a frost year, the only casualty is quantity, not quality. The 2022s are pinnacles of exceptionally high-quality Bergström,Willamette Valley, and Oregon wines, ranking among the top vintages inthe past decade. However, the impact on production is profound.Allocations will be tight, and those swift to act will be the fortunate fewto savor the rewards of this outstanding yet limited vintage.

We believe strongly in the power and promise of Oregon Chardonnay. SigridChardonnay is an homage to our Swedish grandmother whose spirit, grace, andstrength inspired three generations of Bergström children. After harvesting each of our estate vineyards by hand, we ferment the fruit separately in small Frenchoak barrels, where it undergoes full malolactic fermentation and aging sur lie for 18 months. Only then do we select the finest of these barrels for our SigridChardonnay. In a bottle of Sigrid, you will find the layered textures, mineralstructure, fresh citrus and stone-fruit flavors and floral aromas we hope will inspire you to continue following the Oregon renaissance of this noble white grape.Winemaker Tasting NotesThe Queen of Chardonnays, from our oldest and finest vines in the WillametteValley. Our 17th vintage of Sigrid Chardonnay has exotic aromas of freshly struckflint, Opal apples, honied graham, tarragon, white jasmine, buttered brioche, andvanilla bean. The birthplace of Bergström Wines. Reminiscent of a terracotta, scorched earthamphitheater, this bowl-shaped estate vineyard is ideally situated in America’smost famous appellation for cool-climate Pinot Noir. Facing due south, theBergström Vineyard is bathed in the warm sunlight of Oregon’s summer days andis also protected from the cool oceanic winds that come through the Van Duzercoastal wind gap to the southwest. The Bergström Vineyard has optimum ripeningpotential and gives our winery its most powerful yet elegant expressions of PinotNoir and Chardonnay.Winemaker Tasting NotesVivid red cherry in color. The nose speaks of a great terroir, unlike any of itsneighbors, with a salty sanguine note, dried beef, grilled meats over a wood fire,iron-ore, cherry candies, red roses, violets, savory dried and fresh herbs, redcherries, dark raspberries, ripe Hood strawberries, chutney, pomegranate, andbacon. The mouthfeel is exciting as it is at once pleasing to drink now and alsohas a spectrum of fruit, aroma, and minerals just waiting to unfurl for years tocome. Lovely succulent natural acidity, stem brings savoriness, bright, fresh, deliciously ripe red and dark red fruits on the palate. This wine isexplosively delicious right now. With time, this will be an absolute stunner. The first Ribbon Ridge AVA estate that we were honored to add to our portfolio. This magnificent 16-acre marine-sedimentary shallow sandy soil terroir is ownedby the Hill family and farmed by Bergström Wines in partnership since itsinception. Winemaker Tasting NotesIn color, a dark ruby red. The nose boasts a flamboyant, perfumed, fruity, floral, and mineral bouquet. The aromatic profile is delicious and colorful without eventasting the wine, generously spiced with five Chinese spices, black licorice, andwild fennel. There is also an immensely appealing and salivating beef broth or veal demi-glace/meaty mushroom note. This wine is full of blueberry and dark cane berry flavors and is silky with a suave oak influence and spices from the vineyard. It has a lovely long finish with sweet fruit concentration. It is one of the finest Silice Vineyard expressions we have captured in the past 22 years. The French word for “Silica,” the shiny quartz in sand, Silice has the deepestsandy soils of any of our estate vineyards. This 18-acre vineyard sprawls over fourdifferent rolling sandy hillsides in the Chehalem Mountains AVA and mostprobably is a 60 million-year-old sand dune or beach.
