We support survivors of theatrocities of the 1986-2006 Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency, refugees fromSouth Sudan, and survivors of gender-based violence. We support individuals of allages and genders, with priorities on the welfare of girls and women in our holisticinterventions. As THRIVEGulu we believe that meaningful existence is more thanmere survival and that the invisible wounds of psychological trauma deservehealing. And we believe that functionality and productivity can only flourish when anindividual and her community are more-than-surviving.Our VisionTHRIVEGulu assists communities in post-conflict northern Uganda to heal from thetraumatic effects of war, sexual exploitation, extreme poverty, and the resulting lossof opportunities.Our MissionOur vision for Northern Uganda is one in which all people are treated with dignity,live in safety, and have the chance to contribute to the good of the community.Our PeopleTHRIVE is proud to have women-led operations in Gulu, topped with our Director of10 years, Alal Single Dora. She leads a team of thirty professional counselors;gender-based violence, literacy, finance, and empowerment specialists; andadministrative support staff—all native Ugandans. Our international affiliate isheaded by women also, with the Executive Director Mah-Séré Keita who lives inMali, and an Operations & Development Director based in the US.2About Us

We provide:Members of one of our Youth Dance+Therapy groups Children in the Palabek Refugee Settlement participatein a group play therapy session. The children were outof school for two years due to COVID-19 and thesesessions provided a necessary opportunity to process andplay... for both their mental & physical health.Refugee situations are characterized byemergency survival needs, requiringurgent humanitarian assistance. This isthe case in the Palabek RefugeeSettlement in Lamwo District innorthern Uganda. Palabek currentlyhouses more than 60,000 SouthSudanese refugees. Eighty percent arewomen and children.In response to the trauma suffered byforcible displacement, THRIVEGuluprovides its MHPSS services to therefugees and the Ugandans who residein the host community. We recentlybegan using the GirlShine curriculumwith young women, many who aresingle moms, aged 15–21, to educateabout personal empowerment.

Two girls who are evidently thrilled to receive their ownnew book bags for their return to school. THRIVEsupports young parents to return to school with school fees,supplies, and group & individual counseling.Christine, celebrating upon receiving her certificate ofcompletion of the THRIVE Literacy Program in 2018.She is now a Literacy Facilitator, teaching others howto read. Like many of our programs's graduates,Christine wants a library to enable her to share books& knowledge with others in her community.With the understanding that literacy isvital to economic opportunity andindividual autonomy, THRIVE has beenproviding literacy programs within itsempowerment groups for ten years.Over this time, we have had hundredsof adults gain basic literacy in bothEnglish and their native Acholi. A fewyears ago, we expanded our programand had a group of young people helpdevelop and produce a new literacymanual to target youth who were out ofschool. It is time to do more.This year, we will break ground on anew Library & Resource Center in Guluand create a new multi-generationalmanual to bring the power of books tothe families we serve.

Key Program Achievements in 2022The foundation of our empowerment programminghas been providing Empowerment Groups for morethan ten years. Within these groups, members of acommunity are able to decide how they want tolead, and THRIVEGulu facilitates. As you can seebelow, some Empowerment Groups are specificallyfor youth or adults, but most are mixed. At right, you see a new graduate of theGirlShine program, where young women learn life skillsand are empowered to make informed decisions. Wefacilitate Zero-Tolerance Village Alliances, where men& boys are also educated in identifying and preventingviolence. We also provide direct services to survivors ofGBV to receive medical treatment & coordinate withpolice, and we provide counseling to her & her family. Having a baby as a teenager too often results in dropping out of school. We help youngmoms & dads by paying school fees, running support groups, and ensuring they finishprimary school. In 2022, we were able to provide for 285 teens to return to school.6

MOBILE MENTAL HEALTH CLINICSINCOME GENERATION & BUILDING RESILIENCEKey Program Achievements in 2022When the community can't come to us, we go to thecommunity! Our counselors host clinics to screenfor mental health needs, and we always bring alongpublic health workers, who provide vaccinations,medications, and other healthcare.With support from district health departments ofAmuru and Nwoya, THRIVE GULU was able toconduct seven integrated mental health mobileclinics in 2022. We reached 38 children withmental health drugs and other psychiatric servicesin addition to the dozens of community memberswho were seen by other health-care providers.While THRIVEGulu has provided facilitation ofIncome-generating activities through its VSLAs formore than 10 years, we recently have joined aproject that focuses on skill-building and improvingthe personal and economic resilience of womenand youth. Within this program, there are manyoptions... at left you see women who have beenlearning about building their own tailoringbusinesses. Others have expanded their retail andproduce businesses. Twelve VSLA groups arereceiving education in financial literacy.APPROACHESCommunity Empowerment; Communities lead in what they want and TG facilitates. Ourslogan; Nothing About Us Without Us.We cherish partnerships with local leaders, government officials and other developmentpartners in our project locations. Our work is guided by standard global guidelines and tools for the respective sectors weare contributing to.: The IASC guidelines for MHPSS; The SPHERE standards forHumanitarian operations; IASC GBV guidelines and other global tools.7
