Message from HarbourCats General Manager We are extremely excited to see all the Victoria Mariners teams on field this season representing our city and some of the best high school level athletes in the South Island The athletes and coaching staffs have been very patient through this pandemic in a very tough time and I know first hand how hard everyone has been working physically and mentally to prepare for the 2022 season Our organizations the Victoria HarbourCats and Victoria Golden Tide have been watching and communicating with Mariners coaching staffs to recruit and sign our local talent to the Golden Tide for our inaugural season and the HarbourCats 2022 West Coast League campaign We are excited to look forward to getting back on the field after the HarbourCats missed the 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic but the programs will be back and we sense that baseball fans and the community are very excited to see the return at Wilson s Group Stadium at RAP Victoria should be proud of all the great baseball that happens in our area and that includes HarbourCats fans being the best in the WCL helping Victoria lead the league in attendance since 2014 with an exciting atmosphere and outstanding baseball Three of our players were at the MLB level in 2021 Nick Pivetta Red Sox Alex DeGoti Astros and Andrew Vaughn White Sox and another dozen are close to that magical call to the big leagues I encourage all the athletes in the Mariners organization to continue the hard work they are putting in The future is looking very bright for a lot of players and we have been watching and following closely Best of luck in 2022 we look forward to seeing you around the ballpark Curtis Pelletier General Manager Victoria HarbourCats WCL Chicago Cubs Associate Scout Go Mariners website website

Mariners out there making Victoria proud Dominic Hambley Drafted by MLB Cubs Fynn Chester Cal State Fullerton Josh Walker Sacramento State Mason Camberlain Weyburn Beavers current Mariner Sam Shaw in Team Canada Colours Jason Willow U C Santa Barbara

Page 33

Dominic Hambley Chasing the Dream Scouting report 3 05 19 Dominic is a big frame 6 foot 2 205 pound strong dual player that showcased pop at the plate and a heavy fastball on the mound Toeing the rubber at the Inside Pitch Winter Showcase in North Vancouver last week Dominic showcased a heavy FB at 86 87 with a good developing CB in the 69 70 range CH is a third pitch trying to get a feel for At the plate as a RHH Dominic had the 5th highest exit velo 97mph at the event that featured players two years older With a small stride and short compact swing there is plenty of pop left in the bat to tap into As Dominic continues to add size to his frame and develops his young skill set he will be an entertaining top prospect to follow coming out of British Columbia in 2021 6 10 20 Hambley has burst onto the scene this year thanks to a fastball that he s ran up to 93 mph consistently sitting at 91 92 A big body at 6 foot 2 and 225 pounds the Victoria Mariners product tends to get wild at times but there s no ignoring the pure arm strength he possesses His breaking ball had one of the best spin rates at Inside Performance in February showing a lot of potential to be a plus offering in the future if he can learn how to command it Hambley is one of the top uncommitted arms in the 2021 class and will also be a close follow for next year s draft 2 02 21 Dominic Hambley a British Columbia native is the only representative for Canada and first player to represent BC at the Super 60 Hambley 6 foot 3 230 pounds is a hard throwing RHP that has been up to 95mph and the best secondary weapon is a curveball that has shape and spin with depth and downward action The Oregon State commit has been bumping up his mph and has shown a stronger commitment to his physique this offseason through improved movement and as a result the command has improved and allowed him to attack the zone more frequently The large framed Hambley has tons of room to polish his stuff and sharpen the secondary and leaving him towards one of the top prospects coming out of Canada in 2021 Hambley s career path next year could start out in extended spring training and possibly head to Myrtle Beach in June The more conservative route would be for him to start off an extended spring training and then pitch in Mesa next summer It would be quite a jump in level and competition for him to start off next April at Low A in Myrtle Beach It s all going to depend upon the work he puts in this winter From what I hear he s not afraid of getting sweaty to improve As for next year there are two things to take into consideration One it s just how much work he puts in this offseason to improve his arsenal and two just exactly how quickly he adapts against hitters from all over with a variety of abilities He has gotten in a couple of fall instructs game so far I would not put too much weight into how he does against mostly A ball players Hard throwing RHP that has been up to 95mph and the best secondary weapon is a curveball that has shape and spin with depth and downward action The Oregon State commit has been bumping up his mph and has shown a stronger commitment to his physique this off season through improved movement and as a result the command has improved and allowed him to attack the zone more frequently The large framed Hambley has tons of room to polish his stuff and sharpen the secondary and leaving him towards one of the top prospects coming out of Canada in 2021 Drafted by the Cubs in the 18 round of the 2021 MLB Draft

Sam Shaw on National Team Roster Victoria Mariner s infielder Sam Shaw is starting his third season with the Premier team as he heads into grade 11 at Lambrick Park Secondary School The past several months have been a blur of activity for the boy who was introduced to organized baseball at Beacon Hill Little League at age 5 Last season he won MVP and Top Hitter awards for the Mariners as well as committing to Xavier University in Cincinnati an NCAA Division 1 school in the Big East Conference After talking to numerous programs throughout much of the U S he chose Xavier for many reasons including his rapport with Head Coach Billy O Connor the baseball and educational opportunities as well as a good scholarship offer After narrowly not qualifying for the Best of the West tournament in the fall in Kamloops with the Mariners Shaw got the call that he was hoping to receive Junior National Team Head Coach Greg Hamilton invited him to the Fall Instructional Camp in Dunedin Florida playing and training at the spring training facilities of the Toronto Blue Jays He was then picked up by the Langley Blaze Brewers Scout Team and played in the Arizona Fall Classic and then followed that up with a week competing against many of the top 2022 draft year players in the prestigious Perfect Game World Championship in Jupiter Florida where he saw action against teams from Texas Arkansas Florida and Virginia advancing deep in the tournament In Dunedin Shaw played second base with fellow Victorian and Eagle player Tyrus Hall at shortstop and fellow Xavier commit and North Shore Twin Jakob Poturnak at third base After this busy fall schedule things finally slowed down so that Shaw could catch up on his school and work hard at building his strength and speed in the gym and the track He was also lucky to get some atbats facing former Victoria Mariner and Chicago Cubs MLB player Dom Hambley while doing his off season training with the Lambrick Park Baseball Academy at the indoor turf at the Oak Bay Rec Centre under the watchful eye of his long time hitting coach Mitch Davidoff He also continued off season skill training with the Mariners at the Batters Box in Central Saanich and the Island Training Centre with Mariner s coaches Brad Weinmeyer Mike Chewpoy and Jay Longpre The spring started early where the 5 10 175 pound left handed batter again joined the Langley Blaze on their annual Pro Scout Tour in Arizona Here Shaw played MLB teams from the Seattle Mariners San Diego Padres Chicago Cubs as well as Junior College perennial stand outs Yavipai College and Central Arizona College and several others In these games the prospects played in front of often dozens of MLB scouts with their radar guns laptops and other devices working overtime In one game the batters faced a Seattle Mariners minor pro player throwing 101 MPH In this highly competitive environment Shaw played second base shortstop and left field and managed to hit 375 with three extra base hits including a memorable home run deep over the right field fence vs Arizona Christian College After a couple of weeks to recover and catch his breath Shaw will join Eagle s Hall once again to head to Florida for the Junior National Spring Training Camp in Florida which will likely lead to another busy spring summer and fall of baseball playing on at least three different teams Shaw is grateful for the support of his family coaches teammates teachers and friends as he aims to see where the game of baseball takes him
