FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2022 was the start of my term as President of Union League Boys Girls Clubs Board of Trustees and was another great year for growth in ULBGC history not only in membership but also in opportunities Shortly after I took my position as Board President we had the honor of hosting Bubba Wallace Nascar Cup Series driver Bubba Wallace visited our Pilsen Club One speaking to our Club members about making the most of the opportunities given to them He also encouraged our Club members to surround themselves with the right people propelling the messaging of Union League Boys Girls Clubs Bubba Wallace and NASCAR donated Playseat Rigs and TLC Monitors to our Club One members to get the feel for what it is like to drive for NASCAR In addition to our partnership with NASCAR we partnered with Grubhub whose associates helped to distribute Thanksgiving Dinner to families at our Barreto Club in Humboldt Park They also provided funding for daily meals at Club One and Barreto and also funded Club One s healthy habits program and sponsored three events Not only did we have the honor of partnering with Grubhub we also had dozens of volunteers who also helped distribute Thanksgiving Dinner to our Club members throughout Union League Boys Girls Clubs Our partnerships emphasize our commitment to do whatever it takes to fill gaps provide safe spaces and empower kids to achieve great futures It is with much gratitude that I thank all of you for your support in keeping our community flourishing We understand that through your continued support we can continue to bring great futures to our Club members THOMAS E PAYNE Board President 4

FROM THE PRESIDENT CEO Union League Boys Girls Clubs is committed to providing access to experiences and opportunities that positively impact the lives of children and teens regardless of socioeconomic status In 2022 the organization expanded its presence by chartering three new clubs in Chicago s Humboldt Park neighborhood West Garfield Park and Homan Square ULBGC provides safe spaces and quality programs that build essential skills and nurture the well being of kids and teens Today s Club members display remarkable resilience addressing anxiety depression and other mental health concerns all aggravated by a global pandemic Being trauma informed means understanding the impact of these traumatic experiences like discrimination or violence in schools and communities and responding in ways that provide pathways to healing We have also experienced a very exciting year with ULBGC Club members and their mentors were a part of the National Youth Advocacy Days This youth advocacy event where Club youth shared their stories with members of congress while joining an indepth training In May 2022 Chicago hosted the Boys Girls Club National Conference where executives board members and staff from across the country gathered to connect share best practices and address issues facing young people With your support you are part of the impact we are all making on Chicago s youth MARY ANN MAHON HUELS President CEO 5

3 PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS 1 ACADEMIC SUCCESS Through our Academic Success programs we are developing globally competitive graduates These programs are designed to ensure that all Club members graduate from high school on time ready for post secondary education and a 21st Century career 8

STEM Through one of our academic success programs STEM the Union League Boys Girls Clubs are committed to closing the opportunity gap in science technology engineering arts and mathematics with innovative and creative programs and activities for our Club members Afterschool and summer learning environments provide unique opportunities to advance STEM knowledge and increase interest in STEM related careers SEAPERCH SeaPerch in an innovative underwater robotics program that equips our Club members with the resources they need to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle ROV SeaPerch aims to reduce traditional barriers to participation in robotics programs and promotes opportunities to engage Club members in inquiry based learning with real world applications As an educational program SeaPerch introduces Club members to basic engineering design and science concepts As a fun hands on project SeaPerch engages Club members and fosters key 21st Century skills including critical thinking collaboration and creativity Our STEM programming soared to new heights with our SeaPerch team winning 1st Place at the SeaPerch Regional Competition at US Naval Base Great Lakes and advancing to the International Competition held over the summer at the University of Maryland 9

3 PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS 2 HEALTHY LIFESTYLES The foundation for a great future relies heavily on the lifestyles we live At Union League Boys Girls Clubs we believe in giving our youth the tools to build a healthy life from the meals they eat to the activities they partake in to the habits they form At Union League Boys Girls Clubs we re building healthy lifestyles 10

SMART MOVES SMART Moves is a program strongly focused on mental health and is a way for members to have a safe and trusting space and a sense of belonging And for other members to have a better understanding of mental health issues and build empathy for others Learn more about SMART Moves 11

3 PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS 3 GOOD CHARACTER CITIZENSHIP Through our Character Citizenship programs we are helping youth become responsible caring citizens and acquire skills to participate in the democratic process Our Club members also develop leadership skills and gain opportunities for planning decision making and contributing to the Clubs and the community 12 PASSPORT TO MANHOOD Passport to Manhood is a program that concentrates on specific aspects of manhood through highly interactive activities For most adolescent males the passage from boyhood to manhood is a challenging one since it requires them to understand and manage a variety of issues and transitions The program addresses issues that young men are facing such as ethics decision making wellness employment and careers diversity relationships and self esteem and so much more Passport to Manhood teaches and promotes responsibility reinforces positive behavior and developing character

SMART GIRLS SMART Girls is a health fitness prevention education and self esteem enhancement program for girls Female Club members need a safe setting in which they can address health and social issues unique to them and build the necessary skills to resist negative influences The program is designed to help girls develop and adopt a healthy attitude and lifestyle as well as acquire and maintain a positive self concept sound decision making skills and mentor relationships 13

YOUTH OF THE YEAR Jalissa Bowers ULBGC YOUTH OF THE YEAR WINNER Jalissa Bowers has been a part of the Barreto Family for 12 years Throughout her tenure as a member she participated in many programs including Power Hour Smart Girls Torch Club and Keystone She uses her knowledge from all of these programs and offers support to her peers and community She embodies her role as Keystone president with grace integrity and a strong sense of self Her list of hobbies is immaculate and the ones that she gravitates towards the most are volleyball knitting and embroidery she s also an avid reader that loves discovering the world through books Two of her most passionate goals are to have true inner peace and to experience a successful college career All of her academic plans and personal ambitions are leading her to a domineering career in the medical field For now she is the newest Youth Development Professional at ULBGC s Chopin site being the professional role model that is needed for the youth we serve Learn more about Youth of the Year WINE DINNER The 25th Annual Wine Dinner featuring Orin Swift and special guest Rafael Dezendegui was another successful event raising over 140 000 165 guests enjoyed a 6 course meal and wine pairing along with a live auction wine pull and paddle raise to help bring in the generous funds CREATING CHANCES IN THE 2ND CITY GALA The 45th Annual Gala was one of the most successful fundraising events raising over 470 000 A big thank you to our Gala co chairs Catherine Bernardi and Nancy Ross for their time and support dedicated to this event The guests enjoyed a silent auction raffle to win either a tennis bracelet or diamond stud earrings and supported a paddle raise to help reach the 470k We also celebrated our 3rd annual staff inspirational hero and honored Margie Cepeda Vargas highlighted here Sponsor the 2023 Gala For sponsorship opportunities contact Marina Del Cid at m delcid ulbgc org or 312 765 0405 16

CELEBRATING OUR ANNUAL STAFF INSPIRATIONAL HERO MARGIE CEPEDA VARGAS Margie Cepeda Vargas is by far one of the most dedicated staff in the organization During her 30 plus years of service she has been instrumental to our growth as a movement From her time serving as the Club One Director being involved in committees like Youth of The Year Scholarship Alumni Association Human Resources The Professional Association Administration and one of Mary Ann s go to people she has been the glue that kept us moving forward There are a few people in this world that show up everyday with the willingness to get the job done by any means necessary and Margie s character is a reflection of that 17

CAMP Transforming Adversity into Triumph Our Journey to a Successful Camp As we emerged from the COVID 19 pandemic our camp faced numerous challenges in fulfilling camp roles But we didn t let that stop us Instead we turned our lemons into lemonade and pivoted to a day camp model The camp was a resounding success with nearly 290 kids enjoying waterfront activities campfires low ropes and high ropes and hiking We even received a 2500 grant from Cabela s that allowed us to enhance our waterfront experience by adding hammocks and paddleboards Paddleboarding was a brand new sport for our camp and the kids loved it The hammocks were also a hit with kids gathering and unwinding while discussing the highlights of their day Affordable camp fees are made possible by donors like you Contact Christian Molina Godinez Residential Camp Director at c molina ulbgc org or 312 777 3222 to help send a Club kid to Camp 18

JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER Union League Boys Girls Clubs Empowering Youth through SMART Programs Since January 2014 Union League Boys Girls Clubs have partnered with the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center JTDC to help young people realize their full potential Every year we work with an average of 120 young people focusing on three SMART Programs SMART Girls Street SMART and Passport 2 Manhood Our programming is designed to give youth ownership over their activities offering options like arts crafts garden clubs and intramural sports Participation is entirely up to them Our team at the JTDC includes three staff members two of whom are social workers and four programming ambassadors who serve as positive role models for the youth As ULBGC grows the programming within the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center it continues to give our youth the ability to further cultivate lifelong skills because we believe that all youth deserve great futures 19
