Photo: Michael KinseyWELCOME TO OUR 2024–2025 SEASON: I frequently find myself staring in awe at our beautiful facilities, our state-of-the-art theatre, and expansive administrative oces. This awe is mixed with thoughts of my humble beginnings, including WBTT’s nomadic existence, performing shows in venues including an industrial park and the den of the Sarasota Arts Center. My purpose for founding Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe was to create a theatre that would celebrate, nurture and spotlight people of color. In the early 1990s, as an actor who performed at several noted local venues, I seldom saw this kind of representation. We are thrilled to present our 25th anniversary season this year. We open the season with Soul Crooners Solid Gold Edition. Soul Crooners has been a landmark production for me, celebrating a critical part of my journey when, in our 10th year, I contemplated dissolving the company because of our ongoing struggles and lack of widespread community support. My mentor and good friend Howard Millman encouraged me to continue, so I rolled up my sleeves and created this all-male revue, which saved and sustained our company’s future. Even during the pandemic, the Soul Crooners brought the company back to life outdoors, on the porch of our theater building. Following the Crooners, we present one of our holiday favorites, A Motown Christmas. Next, I am excited to produce one of the most powerful dramas by playwright August Wilson, Fences. We follow that with another crowd-favorite musical, Clarke Peters’ Five Guys Named Moe, set to the amazing music of Louis Jordan and others. Rounding out our season is a new, exciting tap dance musical revue called Syncopated Avenue, developed by myself, Broadway star Lamont Brown, and my brother, Michael Jacobs.I want to thank our wonderful patrons, subscribers, donors, and benefactors for embracing our “miracle theatre” and believing in my dream. Many of you have watched our entire history in this community as it evolved and have celebrated and applauded us along the way. You are a significant part of our success and this season’s celebration. I am grateful for every ticket you purchased, every event you have attended, every seat you have filled, and every accolade you have given me and our WBTT community. On behalf of our entire WBTT family, thank you.Starting WBTT, my calling, has changed me as a person, increased my faith in what is possible, and opened my understanding of how I could truly light up my corner of the world. Our amazing Executive Director Julie Leach, our hardworking WBTT sta and I have been honored to be able to shine our light, along with the talented artists of WBTT, these past 25 years. Thank you, Sarasota and surrounding areas, for believing in me and my “miracle theatre.” I look forward to seeing you at the theater!NATE JACOBS Founder and Artistic DirectorI am overjoyed —even somewhat overwhelmed—to see how far we have come in these 25 years of our journey. We kick o our 2024–2025 season with the much-anticipated Soul Crooners Solid Gold Edition featuring WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs along with WBTT favorite crooners Christopher Eisenberg, Michael Mendez, Raleigh Mosely II, Leon Pitts II, Sheldon Rhoden and Earley Dean. Soul Crooners Solid Gold Edition is a new updated celebration of the popular music of male artists like the O’Jays, Earth Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, The Commodores and more! Your favorite WBTT artists sing the music that ushered in the 1970s new era of soul and croon out rich harmonies with energized choreography that will have you singing, clapping and fighting with yourself to stay in your seat. We know the urge to get up and dance can be overwhelming during this show! The Soul Crooners show has been a staple on the WBTT playlist since 2009 when it was CO-SPONSORScreated by WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs as a mainstage production and has been loved and highly requested ever since. Soul Crooners, in its many iterations, has sold out the National, now International, Black Theatre Festival every time it’s been performed there—including this past summer. What started out as a musical revue has become a sing-along, dance in your seats lovefest featuring songs such as “Let’s Groove,” “Use Ta Be My Girl,” “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” and “Got To Give It Up.” Of course, we couldn’t leave out the ballads of that time period including “Love TKO,” “A House Is Not A Home,” and “Easy.” This show has been performed outside, in theatres, auditoriums and parks to critical acclaim. We are proud to present Soul Crooners Solid Gold Edition during our 25th Anniversary season and we hope you enjoy it as much as previous attendees have!PRESENTING SPONSORSALI & GLORIA BAHAJSARAH & KEN GOLDBLATTLEADING SPONSORSKitty & John CranorThe ExchangeNancy & Tom FlanaganDr. Phil & Suzan GaynesBernice Giscombe Gulf Coast Community FoundationRob Heeren & Steven KaltMichele Hooper & Lemuel SeabrookVictor Kaufman & Ann RaineyPatricia KordisNeil & Carole PhillipsCheryl Anderson & Mike SpringerMarty & Barbara BowlingBruce & Elaine BurtonCommunity Foundation of Sarasota CountyCynthia DavisMike & Karen GardinerEd Keon & Pat KennellyDonna Koman & Maria BeckVirginia LiptonBarbara & Larry Newman in Memory of Alan E. Irvin, Sr. & Sarah IrvinIn warm, sunny Florida we create our own traditions to look forward to every year. Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe’s annual tradition is to present a holiday show as our Christmas card to the community.Who doesn’t love to listen to holiday music at this special time of the year? This will be our fourth time presenting A Motown Christmas and our first time producing it in our new theatre! This festive revue is for lovers of the holidays and Motown music! Written and conceived by WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs, it showcases the classic Motown sound and oers a soulful twist to many traditional Christmas carols.Since most of Motown’s favorite performers—the Supremes, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations—have released Christmas records, there’s plenty of material to choose from. We present a bit of everything—time-honored holiday tunes and contemporary, upbeat and danceable numbers. All have one thing in common—they focus on the importance of being with friends and family during this festive season.“The word Motown instantly incites joy, fun, and anticipation for a unique sound of music which has authentically woven itself into American music and around the world,” said Jacobs. “A Motown Christmas is a holiday treat that ushers you into the spirit of the season with songs from the ocial Christmas recordings of the Motown artists and the popular R&B hits that the world has come to know. Don’t miss this spectacular holiday experience.”This holiday show also includes holiday favorites like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells”— with a Motown vibe. As a little holiday extra, we’ve included some Motown songs that are not, strictly speaking, Christmas related, but we don’t hear anyone complaining. The show takes us to an avenue where all things flourish with rhythm, style, and class. This innovative musical uses dance as a universal language and features an exciting repertoire of unique arrangements on popular jazz tunes by iconic composers such as Irving Berlin and features music including Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Mean A Thing’ and Eubie Blake’s “I’m Just Full Of Jazz.” The show was written by Michael Jacobs and also oers new songs arranged by Nate Jacobs, Lamont Brown, Louis Danowsky and other collaborators.WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs was inspired to create this show when he saw Lamont Brown, performing some incredible tap dance routines in the Broadway show After Midnight a few years ago. He was very impressed with Lamont’s star power and spoke with him briefly after the show regarding working together. Last year they spoke again and decided they would collaborate on a show and Syncopated Avenue was born. Jacobs, Brown, Danowsky and others collaborated in developmental workshops locally and in New York City over the summer and fall—creating a sense of excitement for all involved as the show was built.
