SACF 2022-2023 Annual Report18With help from the William & Helen Doyle Fund, the Amigo Centre in Sturgis tailored its summer camp program to ensure a supportive environment for campers with autism. The Amigo Centre in Sturgis focuses on establishing itself as a haven where all people can encounter and connect with nature, community, and God. Outdoor activity is influential in children’s lives and can be particularly important for children with autism and other neurodivergent diagnoses. Knowing this, the Amigo Centre has developed a week of camp tailored specifically for autistic children. Since 2018, this weeklong experience has welcomed both campers with and without autism, and provides counselors who can give specialized support for those who need it. While offering the traditional camp experience, it also provides “get-away” spaces and backpacks filled with sensory aids individualized for each child. Each year the Amigo Centre welcomes repeat campers that look forward to building strong and effective relationships with other campers and volunteers. Jessica Weseman, Executive Director at the Amigo Centre, along with her staff, and two Autism Spectrum Disorder teacher consultants from the ISD facilitate orientation to train camp volunteers and provide additional support. The Amigo Centre is excited to be able to develop this program and provide a space where all children can be welcomed, known, and loved.Amigo Centre Builds Inclusive Camp Experience for Children with Autism

22The Sturgis Neighborhood Program “SNP” Sturgis Building Trades Support Fund was established to provide additional resources for the Sturgis construction trades program and its students. With support from the Foundation’s Newell A. and Grace A. Franks Fund and leadership from the Sturgis Neighborhood Program, the fund was created in 2021 following SNP’s announcement of a formal partnership with the CTE Building Trades program. This fund provides a great option for individuals and businesses looking to contribute to tradeseducation.About the SNP/Building Trades PartnershipIn 2020, Sturgis Neighborhood Program and the St. Joseph County Intermediate School District’s CTEConsortium joined forces to facilitate the improvement of community neighborhoods through the construction of single-family homes on vacant lots in Sturgis.“We want to support the trades in the community and help those students if they want that pathway to a trade as a career, whether it’s carpentry, HVAC, electrical, whatever it is, to help support them for that career path,” said Monica Smith, former executive director of SNP.The City of Sturgis also entered the partnership agreeing to identify city-owned vacant lots for potential projects. For its part, the Sturgis Area Community Foundation provides financing. Since partnering, these collective efforts have resulted in two recently constructed homes, with the third beginning construction in fall of 2023.SNP Building Trades Support Fund

Dresser Fund Windy City FundA donor-advised fund with a bequest provision, established at the community foundation, is a great solution for many donors.Donor-advised funds continue to be popular tools to help charitably-minded individuals organize their giving and support their favorite causes. Because of SACF’s deep knowledge of local community needs and the organizations addressing critical issues, a donor-advised fund established at the community foundation is an especially useful vehicle. We can help you identify causes and projects that align with your unique interests and goals for giving. If you are a current fund holder at the community foundation, or if you are considering establishing a fund, you already know that a donor-advised fund is easy to start and easy to use. Many SACF Donor-Advised Fund holders use their fund to streamline giving to their favorite charities each year. You recommend the nonprofits to receive support, and SACF takes care of all of the administrative work. A donor-advised fund is not only a convenient giving vehicle during your lifetime, but it is also flexible enough to accommodate your wishes for leaving a legacy. The community foundation can work with you to include provisions in your donor-advised fund document to name your children or other family members as successor advisors to make recommendations following your death and you can provide that certain organizations or causes receive a portion of the grants each year after your lifetime. Bequests to the community foundation help keep our institution strong to grow the philanthropy required for our area’s nonprofits to serve the community for generations to come and respond to the most critical needs at any given time–needs that are impossible to predict.

About JuliaThroughout her 20 years, Julia carried a smile on her face every day, which she shared with everyone around her to make their lives a little brighter. She always wanted everyone to be happy. She loved to laugh and joke, spend time with friends and family, and travel. Malice was not a part of her character—she loved everyone and everything! Julia marveled at this beautiful world. The oceans, lakes, rivers, beaches, and mountains. Her dreams included seeing every corner of the world and interacting with everyone she could meet. The Julia Renee Zimmerman Scholarship Fund will honor Julia’s legacy each year by awarding educational scholarships to graduating Sturgis High School seniors with a track record of community service.

Designated funds allow donors to create a source of ongoing support for the nonprots they love. Throughout their lives, Robert and Marian Hair were avid enthusiasts of Sturgis History. The Robert & Marian Hair Sturgis History Fund will continue their legacy as historians by providing annual support to the Sturgis Historical Society, an organization that both Robert and Marian were committed to as supporters and volunteers during their lives. We would not be the organization we are today without the research and books written by Mr. Hair.

Page 39

39SACF 2022-2023 Annual ReportAbout Robert and Marian HairRobert “Bob” Hair was an award-winning writer, editor and Sturgis historian who was born April 11, 1921, in Winamac, Ind. Bob was a Rector Scholar at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., graduating with distinction in 1942 with a degree in English composition and journalism. He worked briefly for United Press wire service in Indianapolis before joining the U.S. Army Signal Corps on Aug. 13, 1942, and was assigned to Camp Atterbury, Ind. He was next sent to the University of Michigan for specialized training in German language and European geography before heading to northern Europe with the 1263d Engineer Combat Battalion as the battalion intelligence sergeant. Bob was discharged from the military in 1946 as a master sergeant. He joined the Sturgis Journal in 1946 as telegraph news editor and later became managing editor. Marian (Emerson) Hair was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Her parents had moved from northern Indiana to Canada to farm, then returned to the United States when Marian was a toddler. She spent much of her childhood in Sturgis, Michigan, and in northern Indiana. She graduated from high school in Flint, Indiana, in 1939. Marian took bookkeeping and business courses and worked in offices in Sturgis. Bob and Marian married in 1949. Bob’s writing and editing career took the couple and their two children to cities in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, and Indiana. Throughout the moves, Marian drew on her business expertise to work in insurance, real estate, and church offices, as well as in a large corporate accounting department in Miami. Bob and Marian returned to Sturgis in 1988 and both were active in area historical organizations. Bob launched a quest to uncover local history, scouring old newspapers and putting out a call for residents willing to share their recollections, vintage postcards and family photographs. He wrote four books on Sturgis history. A local annual award for historian of the year is named in the couple’s honor. Marian volunteered with many organizations, including the Sturgis District Library and the First Presbyterian Church of Sturgis. She was also president of the garden club and recognized as Sturgis Citizen of the Year in 1999.“We are truly excited and thankful to be recipient of the Robert and Marian Hair Fund.“— Jackie Persing, Board President of the Sturgis Historical Society

The plaque will hang in the camp’s main lodge and reads: John Wendell Kirsch 1927-2020 A Gift From The Kirsch Family“Laborare, Ludere, Orare“ (To Work, To Play, To Pray) is the motto of St. John’s Military Academy in Wisconsin where John (Jack) W. Kirsch attended school and achieved the rank of Captain and later earned the Distinguished Service award. He was accepted to Stanford University before serving his country in the Navy in WWII. He then attended Albion College and Indiana University. A lifelong resident of the Sturgis community, he joined the Kirsch Company in 1951. In 1960, he was named President and then elected Chairman of the Board in 1965 which he led until 1981 when the company was sold. He was a member and served on the boards of many professional and fraternal affiliations such as the B.P.O.E. (Elks), Free Masons, Rotary Club, Bank One, Howe Military Academy, and Klinger Lake Country Club. He was deeply involved in the betterment of the community. Camp Fort Hill was just one of his passions as it was with his grandfather, Charles W. Kirsch, his father, John N. Kirsch, and his uncle, Guy W. Kirsch. Jack loved his schools, church, golfing, sports fishing, University of Michigan football, and most of all his bride, Genevieve (Sugar) Kirsch of over 70 years. He is remembered as a humble man of quiet generosity who always found time to give back to others and serve his community. “Laborare, Ludere, Orare“ is how he lived his life!“He is remembered as a humble man of quiet generosity who always found time to give back to others and serve his community.

The scholarship is a way for my Dad to keep helping others and specifically students from the Constantine school district.” During his life, Don Mathews called the Constantine community home for 50 years and was an avid and faithful fan of Constantine High School athletics. Beyond his enthusiasm for Falcon sports, he enjoyed fishing and was a meticulous groundskeeper. Don was also a member of Bristol Church of Nazarene, where he served on the board as a trustee. A 1965 graduate of Jefferson High School (Middlebury, IN), Don recognized that success was not dependent on earning a bachelor’s degree. He believed in the value of education but did not believe traditional college was the only education of value. Commemorating his love for Constantine, the Don Mathews Memorial Scholarship for the Trades supports Constantine High School graduates pursuing an education in the skilled trades. With its location on 228 acres of wooded hills in St. Joseph County, the camp provides a rich outdoor experience to visitors of all ages. With the help of a grant from the White Pigeon Area Community Foundation, youth in White Pigeon had the opportunity to experience one of the camp’s most popular programs this year—Summer Day Camp. Day Camp is an opportunity for children ages 7-12 to experience all Camp Fort Hill has to offer. Each camper spends one week at camp from 9AM-3PM. During this time, campers can explore miles of forest trails, swim, and canoe on Lake Tamarack, try their luck on the climbing wall and participate in a variety of organized camp activities.Funds from the White Pigeon Area Community Foundation cover the costs of busing for all White Pigeon participants and provide scholarships for those who need it.“It is important to the White Pigeon board that Camp Fort Hill’s program be accessible for all White Pigeon students and with our grant, we hope that barriers like transportation and cost of attendance are removed for those that need it,” says Eric Jones, Board President of the White Pigeon Area Community Foundation.
