October events started out with the Big Bend drive hosted by Bill Dorsey and Irene Camacho. Then on the 16th was track day at Harris Hill Raceway. The annual fall picnic was on the 23rd and the month nished up with the 2nd Annual Trunk-n-Treat at Boysville/Girlsville. Another Track Day was held November 20. The 2021 year ends with the annual Christmas party at the Petroleum Club in SA. See inside the Roundup for all the stories (except the Christmas party which will be in the next issue). It was a great year with many events - despite Covid still disrupting our lives. Here’s hoping 2022 will bring about more of a feeling of normalcy. The end of the year also brought about election of ofcers for 2022 - President, Jud Walford; VP, James Bricken; Secretary, Chris Royter; and Treasurer, Ignacio Fortuno. They will ofcially take over at the Christmas Party in December. We’d like to thank our out-going Secretary - Susie Bush who served on the LHR board as Secretary for four years! We appreciate all your dedication and hard work you did - and continue to give - our club! And congratulations to our new board! The board and committees are feverishly working on events for next year. I can tell you it’s going to be one FULL year of events and there will be something for everyone! If you’re interested in serving on a committee, let a board member or chairperson know. The committees are always looking to add energetic people with fresh ideas. Watch the Roundup and website calendars for updates. And for me - Another year has come and (almost) gone! I’d like to thank everyone for your stories, pictures, and support of the Roundup. I especially want to thank Robyn Barnes and Betty Campbell for being my editors and all the people that look over the draft before I send it out to the printer. It’s easy for me to get involved with the layout and it continues to be a learning experience. I couldn’t do it without all of you. In the coming year, please think about writing a story or article, submit pictures (they don’t have to be connected to a club event), make comments or suggestions, and keep reading the Roundup! Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and I look forward to getting together in the new year!!LH ROUNDUP 3

President’s Corner BY JUD WALFORD, LONGHORN REGION PRESIDENT What an amazing year! We have seen record growth in our club and, more importantly, lots of members involved in activities. New officers and chairpersons are in place and a great level of enthusiasm and excitement is evident at every event.I want to take this opportunity to thank our board members and chairpersons for their work and cooperation in making this an unprecedented year for the club in many areas. We donated a record amount of proceeds to San Antonio charities this year and in a time when it was desperately needed. We have the most number of primary members ever in our history, topping 540 members for the first time. Thanks to you all, we have exceeded prior number of attendees in many events from Fiesta Challenge to drives and rallies. All this done safely in the face of a year filled with many challenges to gatherings by the Corona Virus.I am gratified with our progress, but I know there is much to be done and many more fun things we can provide for our members. That is our goal and we have some new faces to help move things forward. I welcome Chris Royter as our new Secretary and we have a new Social Chairperson in Donna Clement. James Bricken will be adding Driving Instruction and Safety Chair to his duties as Autocross Chair and Vice President. It has been my good fortune to serve on the board the past two years with Susie Bush and I know you all will join me in thanking her for her superb service to the club for many years. Jack Merrell will be stepping down from his DE and Safety Duties as will Mike Matthews. I have learned much from both of them and treasure their contributions to our organization.I would be remiss if I did not express my sincere gratitude to Shelley Matthews for her tireless efforts in constructing our newsletter, The Roundup, her work as new member chairperson and helping with just about every event we conduct. She is my right hand and memory, and I can always count on her good help and advice.Next year promises to exceed our successes of the past. We have secured some new venues for autocross, and it should be in full swing next year. We will again have at least four Track Days with varying formats for DE. We have a new drive committee with lots of plans for 2022. Monthly meetings will be back in place the 1st Thursday of every month and the board is cooking up some new events I think you will like. All you need to do is participate.I wish you all a Joyful Holiday Season and a New Year filled with Promise and Good Will.JudLH ROUNDUP 7

ZONE 5 NOTES CHUCK BUSH, ZONE 5 REP 10 LH ROUNDUPI got back from PCA Palooza recently- and what a great event. Thanks to White River and all the other regions and volunteers that do such a great job every year. This year there were 354 cars, and 608 people from 14 States, and 24 PCA regions. If you have never been, this one is worth putting on your attendee list.Hope you all are having a great start to the Holiday season! As I reflect on my many blessings this year, I think about how lucky I am to be driving a Porsche and to belong to a club with so many tal-ented and generous people. That so many of the club events we attend are also part of a fundrais-ing effort is a real testament to your generosity. While you may be aware that Porsche owners are generous and caring, not everyone out on the road knows that. Just as Porsche hires people as brand ambassadors to represent the brand, PCA members are brand ambassadors for Porsche and the club. I am sure you have all been approached by folks asking about Porsches and our club, and what you say makes a big dif-ference in opinions. You are also an ambassador every time you drive your Porsche, representing both Porsche and the club based on how you treat people in traffic. When you are out on a drive with 20 or more of your Porsche friends, think of the impact you have on the local community as you drive through small towns and neighborhoods. If we slow down and wave, we are perceived as friendly and caring. The Porsche Club I know is full of friendly caring people. I like to think we also demonstrate that when we are out on the road.Have a great Holiday!Chuck Bush Zone 5 rep

MOTORSPORT RAMBLINGS BY JACK MERRELL With the holidays upon us, another motorsport year is coming to an end. Well, Formula One is not quite fin-ished and is proving to be moving towards a dramatic finish. IMSA finished on a high note for PORSCHE with the RSR’s placing first and second in the final race for GTLM. While not winning the final race, a PORSCHE did take second in GTD and thus secure enough points to win the class for the season. On a lesser note, we ran two successful track days this fall and in no small way, the success was due to the work efforts of Ron McAtee, Bob Jones, and Chris Roytor, all of whom came out repeatedly to work and did not run. Additionally, I appreciate the in-car instruc-tion provided by Mikel Matthews, Chuck Bush, James Bricken and Peter Fisher. If you participated in any of the track days, take a minute to thank these people that gave their time to make your day more enjoyable.Over the year I saw progress made by all our drivers as they safely explored the capabilities of their cars and improved their driving skills. I was especially happy to see how well everyone adapted to the October event in which we ran counterclockwise for the first time. All that said, improvement is still needed by many in two key areas that directly affect safety. First adherence to “driving the line” and second, FLAGS!“Driving the line” has been stressed over and over and yet drivers get sloppy in constantly driving their vehicles on the correct line. The “driving line” as defined before is that imaginary line that allows to you be the quick-est, smoothest, and safest around the track. We provide key markers for that line by placing cones on the edge of the track to denote proper turn in, apex and track out points for each corner. These points not only make the corner the widest BUT also the safest as they put the track surface outside your direction of turn thus giving room should lack of tire adhesion move the car opposite of the way you are turning. I will admit it takes discipline to constantly hit these points precisely over and over on each lap, but it does make you a quicker, smoother, and SAFER driver… and that’s what we all want to be.FLAGS. The flags displayed by the corner workers are the ONLY way we communicate with drivers, and they must be acknowledged and adhered to. They not only start and end each session but alert you to hazards that may develop on the track or mechanical issues with your car. Please take the time to commit to memory their individual meanings AND the actions required of drivers when they are displayed. If you have any ques-tions touch base with me during the off season and we will go over them. All that said, I wish everyone a very safe holiday season with families and friends and a most prosperous New Year. We are planning four track days for next year and hopefully an active autocross program if we can find a new venue. Drive safe and a most Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. After 15 years, I’m turning the reigns of the program over to the capable hands of James Bricken. It’s been a great ride watching members become better drivers and enjoy themselves.LH ROUNDUP 11

Meet the Longhorn - Chris RoyterTell us a bit about yourself/family/background? I grew up in Boulder Colorado. As a kid I did a lot of skiing, camping and fly fishing. Once I got my DL, I started tearing around the mountain roads. I gradu-ated from University of Denver with a BSBA Degree in Hotel Restaurant Management. I spent my profes-sional career directing multiple restaurant operations and concepts. Married 37 years and enjoy a great family with three daughters and three grandsons. What year did you join PCA? I joined in March 2021. Planned to join last summer when I bought my 981, but since there were no club activities, I waited. What other regions have you belonged to? This is my 1st PCA club membership. I was active in an Alfa Romeo club back in Colorado. What Porsche(s) do you/have you owned? My 1st Porsche was ’75 914 2.0L. A beautiful Ancona blue with blue plaid seat inserts. What’s your favorite Porsche memory? In ’87, the 1st IMSA race here in SA. To see Holbert, Robinson & Bell drive their 962 was incredible. The track was horrible, but back then you could wander the paddock and see the machines up close and hear team chatter. What LHR events do you enjoy most? My favorite so far was Boxstoberfest. That was my first drive on the Three Sisters. To see the great line up of Porsches on the tarmac was fun. What’s your favorite Porsche? I would say the 904 Carrera GTS. A dealership in Denver had one in the showroom. They let me sit in it and pretend. As a teenager that made a big impression on me.What non-Porsche activities do you enjoy/par-ticipate in? I enjoy golfing with friends, backyard grilling and getting outdoors. I started fly fishing again but haven’t caught a thing yet. Being goofy with the grandkids is always fun.Editor’s note: Chris is our new club Secretary for 2022. Congratulations Chris and we all look forward to working with and getting to know you!12 LH ROUNDUP

Track Day Fun! Article by Mike Matthews14 LH ROUNDUPWOW, two track days under our belt in just over one month! I enjoyed both days. I didn’t get much driving time in, but I got to help a lot of people get more familiar with their car and track. I had a blast doing it. We had a lot of first-time drivers in the two sessions, and they did a great job. In the Oct event, most drivers got to experience something new to them and that was to drive H2R (Harris Hill Raceway) CCW (counterclockwise). It was my first time (and I had to lead a group) driving CCW at H2R. I thought the flow was much better than CW. For those of you who attended I hope you had a great time. I saw a lot of smiles when people came off track. For those of you who haven’t been out to a track day event, let me give you a sample of what goes on. We arrive around 7:00 AM (early because we only rent the track for 1/2 day). People sign in (waivers) and get their cars ready for tech inspection. In addition, you will need numbers on both sides of your car, and they must be large enough to be seen so look for 7” or larger. They must be of a color which contrasts with the car color. Meaning don’t put blue numbers on a blue or black car. If you don’t have temporary numbers, please bring some painters tape so you add your numbers. The painter’s tape will not hurt your paint job.The tech inspection consists of making sure you have your numbers on the car, there are no loose

Page 15

LH ROUNDUP 15objects in the car, checking brakes, that the battery is secured properly and checking the torque on the lug nuts. We suggest that you get your brake system bled or the brake fluid changed. If you track your car a lot, you need to bleed the air out of the brake lines. We check for fluids coming out of your car. We all know that oil spills are bad for everyone. If you are driving and hit an oil spill you can spin, hit another car, wreck your car, get injured or injure someone else. But it is not only brake fluids that can cause these problems. Radiator fluid can do the same thing, just like transmission or rear-end fluids. We want you to be safe out there. If we see any fluids dripping from your car, you can fix it or not drive. If we see it happen on track, we will black flag you. The easiest way to avoid this is to get an inspection performed by a reliable source prior to the event. We had one individual who had his car inspected just before an event and found that his brake pads were too thin for track days or even driving on the road. Unfortunately, he didn’t have time to get them fixed prior to the event. So, get your car inspected weeks before the track day event. We will also check your throttle to make sure it works correctly. The newer cars have an electronic throttle, but we still check them. Older cars have a wire that goes from the pedal to the carburetor or throttle body. There is a return spring that pulls the throttle back when you get off the pedal. We will check both of those.Once we have checked the cars and you passed inspection, we will mark your car indicating you have passed tech. When all inspections are done, we will have a driver’s meetingAt the drivers meeting the event organizers will provide a safety briefing about the event. This will include discussions about the track, flags, the run groups, and safety. If you have questions, ask them at the drivers meeting. All DRIVERS must attend this meeting. Not making the meeting are grounds for disqualifying you from the event with no refund of your entry fees.Once the drivers meeting is over, the cars will line up according to their classification. The advanced drivers will be grouped together, then the intermediates, and finally the novices/new drivers. Each session will be around 20 minutes long and each group will have four or five sessions. The first session for all classes will be a lead follow session. This allows for people to get their cars and tires warmed up, get used to driving the line, and get the butterflies out of their system. The novice class will have a lead/follow for all but the last session. While on track look for the starter. This individual will be waving flags and it is your job to look at them each time you pass the starting line. Acknowledge the starter as you pass. This lets them know you have seen the flags. The flag colors and what do to for each flag will be described in the driver’s meeting. This is not a race; you will only be able to pass in two places on the track and the car in front must indicate which side of their car to pass on. If the driver does not indicate that you can pass - DO NOT PASS. The starter will be watching and will show the driver in front the blue flag to let them know they should let the driver behind pass. Most of all have fun, relax, and when you’re not racing, watch the other drivers on track. Watch where they brake, where they turn-in, track out, where they hit their apex. This can help improve your driving and ensure you get the most out of our track days.

On Saturday November 6, 19 Longhorn PCA folks and 12 cars visited the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) National Championships. This tour required a higher level of dedication since we met at Buc-ee’s in New Braunfels in the pre-dawn cold with little but coffee and brisket burritos to keep us warm. A brief drive up I-35 and the toll road led us to COTA where Hagerty hosted a car show around the reflect-ing pool between turns 15 and 19. We were early enough that Rick Elizondo and Noel Camacho got covered parking spots. From there the day grew sweeter, with warming temperatures and crisp, blue skies – Chamber of Commerce weather. What’s the big deal about going to COTA for the SVRA races and Hagerty show? Both the show and the races are spectacular, so it depends on what you like, and if you like both, that’s even better. The show featured a lot of Porsches, includ-ing those we brought from San Antonio. Besides the Porsches? Most distinctive for me was a four-door Nash Ambassador hot rod. Hot rod Fords and Chevys are beautiful, but relatively common. It took courage and vision to make a Nash Ambassador hot rod. Most personal was a 1969 Triumph GT-6, because I had one and loved that poor man’s Jag in college. My favorite story was the man with the perfect American Motors AMX that he owned since Vietnam. The “ah-hah” moment car was actually a Harley Davidson with a cable-actuated siren where the clutch handle would be on a “normal” motor-cycle. Next time I’m watching a black and white movie and the cop rides up with the siren howling, SVRA Championships at COTA22 LH ROUNDUPSan Antonio Cars & Coffee2nd Saturday of the month - 7:30-9:30amFiesta TexasSponsored by Xpel

I’ll know it was done with a swift squeeze of the left hand. And the winner was Longhorn Region’s own Jim Conrad, taking home the ribbon for the 1973-1995 class for his Orange and Yellow 914 with the orange and yellow tartan seats.SVRA racing is constant and varied with a different class of cars on the track every 30 minutes, and you can walk the pits without a Rolex or a glass of Moet & Chandon. The small-bore class is engaging because they are cars I either owned or could afford to own – MG, Triumph, Mini. This allows me the fantasy of “I could do that” knowing full well I don’t have the disposable income, disposable weekends, or kitchen passes, not to mention talent or focus, to ever pull that off. The older formula cars are interesting for their variety, in contrast to the more modern cars which look so much alike because of safety and aerodynamic rules. The little kid in me loves the big-bore muscle cars, with flames shoot-ing out of their exhaust pipes as they downshift and brake into Turn 19. If I ever run an evil empire, I also want sharks with laser beams on their heads. The best show was in Group 8. Not only could I identify with and cheer the pre-1989 Porsche 911s and 914s, but because Miguel and Rose Jimenez were friends in California with the folks running the Datsun 510s. Not only were they putting the 240Zs in their rearview mirrors, but they were also giving the 911s a reason to focus and keep up the pace. Sorry, Miguel, I was still rooting for the Porsches. And if all that isn’t enough, there is the track tour in the company of all those classic cars or following Webb up to the top of the COTA tower to take in the view. At the end of the day, it was sunburns and smiles. Mark your calendars for the first Saturday in November 2022 for the best deal at COTA.Miguel and Rose Jimenez’s CaymanRich Roy’s 914-6Donna & Ben Sutter’s Cayman Article and Photos by Mike VriesengaLH ROUNDUP 23

24 LH ROUNDUPTreffen - Kohler, WI Article and photos by Betty Campbell, Chuck & Susie BushTreffen is one of our favorite PCA events. They are always held in the most incredible places – places that we might never have visited if not for Treffen. Compared to some of the other PCA events, they are a bit pricey but well worth it! You definitely get what you pay for with Treffen! PCA limits the number of regis-trations to maintain a more inti-mate atmosphere, so prompt reg-istration is important. I mean, like IMMEDIATELY when registration opens. Some past Treffens have sold out in less than an hour!Fall Treffen 2021 was held at The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. If you are a golfer, you might remember that the Ryder Cup was at Whistling Straits in Kohler last September. The golfers and their entourages stayed at The American Club. Even if you’re not a golfer, you’re probably familiar with Kohler from plumbing fix-tures everywhere! While there, we learned that Kohler is so much more than just plumbing fixtures. The company is still family owned, operating the factory founded in 1900. The village of Kohler across the street from the factory is glimpse of an idyllic America past with wide tree lined streets, pristine humble houses and yards, water fountains on the street corners (and they function!). Even today, The Kohler Company continues to retain final author-ity over the design of home and business addi-tions, outbuildings and fences in the village to keep them within a certain aesthetic standard. The American Club was originally built as a dor-mitory for the skilled immigrant workers Kohler brought to work in the factory. For a third of their salary, they received not only room and board, but the means to learn English and study for American citizenship. Decades later, The American Club is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and has a five-star rating, but its walls still proudly display stories of the immigrants. It is truly a tribute to American patriotism. Over the years, we’ve made good friends from across the country, and Treffens have become mini reunions. Several years ago when our Longhorn members and friends Angela and Bill Fetter told us they were leaving to move to Ohio, we told them to look up our friends Hal and Linda Grossglass whom we’d met at Treffen in 2017. They all cross paths and new friendships have been forged. It truly isn’t just the cars, it’s the people! All of the gatherings provided by PCA were first class. Registration/check-in on the first evening proudly displayed the German heritage of

LH ROUNDUP 25Wisconsin with brats and an oom-pah band. The event was described as light hors d’oeuvres but we cancelled our dinner reservations – need we say more! All of the other events at the hotel were exceptional. They were well-planned and organized, food was delicious, service was excellent. PCA, the sponsor-ing regions, The American Club and all its staff did an outstanding job!Betty and Kris Campbell’s first official drive was on Thursday to Cedarburg. We started out from the staging area at Blackwolf Golf Course, passing by the Road America Race Course (which would we visit on another day) then on some of the roads that were historic race courses in the early 1950’s around Elkhart Lake. Then we followed twisty hilly roads through the Kettle Moraine. We had no idea before this trip about the ice age history of Wisconsin! (The Kettle Moraine is the area of glacial deposits piled up between the Green Bay and Wisconsin basins.) We meandered through little towns, one of which is the home of America’s initial Flag Day and near the end, passed by Wisconsin’s last remaining covered bridge. The tour ended with lunch in Cedarburg, a quaint little town founded before the Civil War. Brandywine Restaurant exceeded our expectations! They are usually closed for lunch, but warmly opened their doors to serve us an amazing lunch of melt-in-your-mouth short ribs followed by home-made ice cream.Susie and Chuck Bush’s first drive was to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Like the Campbells, we took the back roads through the incredibly scenic Kettle Moraine, and then through Fond du Lac along the shores of Lake Winnebago. Wisconsin is an interest-ing mix of beautiful scenery and industry. That indus-try is reflected in the history of experimental air-craft and aviation around the Oshkosh area, which is why the EAA museum is there. A very dynamic museum focused on experimental aircraft, it has exhibit ranging from the Wright Brothers aircraft to modern spacecraft. The museum also hosts one of the largest annual fly-ins of historic and experimen-tal aircraft, averaging over 100K visitors a day.

26 LH ROUNDUPFriday is Navigators Day Off. Usually we’d pick a tour where WE don’t have to do the driving, but one of the options was to drive Road America. Who could pass up the opportunity to drive on this famous racetrack?! Pictures can’t capture the event but it was a great one for the memory books, driving your own car two laps around the 4 mile course. We had a buffet lunch following, during which race car driver Randy Pobst shared some exciting tales! Kris and Betty’s last driving tour was on Saturday through the Kettle Moraine State Forest then on through twisty curvy roads, past beautiful dairy farms with very contented cows and gorgeous trees showing their fall colors. We ended with lunch at the Lake Street Café in Elkhart Lake. Susie and Chuck’s second drive was through the Boston Mountains and Kettle Moraine, ending up in the town of Cedarburg. Same tour Kris and Betty did on the first day. It was a very well run tour, and very enjoyable driving through all the lovely scenery.Even though there are events every day, we had time to explore a local cheese factory and an apple orchard and the golf courses. The shopkeepers were generous with free samples and we left with bags of apples and cheese of many varieties – and cheeseheads for the granddaughters! We had dinner at Whistling Straits one evening but we didn’t play golf – the course is definitely for the pros! We did play the 10-hole par 3 course with hickory clubs though! Kris likened it to playing with fireplace tools! The American Club has a beautiful greenhouse turned coffee shop, a small courtyard venue where you can get coffee, wine, pastries, snacks and ice cream -. One evening, Chuck, Susie Kris and Betty met there for a cocktail before dinner. Displayed on the counter was a beautiful 4 layer cake that looked like it was straight out of a magazine. The shop-keeper told us that Mr. Kohler had asked them to make it – he ate a piece and left the rest with them. Apparently Mr. Kohler has a sweet tooth and very good taste!
