Brookview Community CenterBrookview Community Center is the culmination of a two-year public task force visioning and predesign effort by the City of Golden Valley assisted by HGA’s team. Envisioned as a central gathering place for the community, the building will replace the existing building to right-size and expand current program spaces, and provide a welcoming destination for residents. Golf operations, as well as Parks and Recreation program spaces, include seniors gathering, multipurpose classrooms, indoor kids’ play area, offi ces, golf pro shop, bar and grill restaurant, and full banquet facilities with catering support. The new facility takes advantage of the Brookview Golf Course site by creating new exterior spaces for lawn bowling, golf, seniors, dining and public gathering.Award* Commendation for Excellence in Design for Integration - AIA MN Honor Award
St. Louis Park-Westwood Hills Nature CenterThe Westwood Hills Nature Center (WHNC) is a 160-acre nature park featuring prairie, forest and marsh areas, with trails and an educational center. HGA’s site design expands an existing specimen prairie, creates an outdoor classroom space on the site of the old building, and provides expanded parking for visitors to the new facility. The building forms an experiential and informational threshold to the site. Dropbox - Headquarters Tenant ImprovementWhen approaching its new headquarters expansion, Dropbox set aspirational goals, seeking a workplace that would “unleash creative energy” for a diverse workforce and foster connection, curiosity, and creativity. Their new workplace under construction re-solves those aspirational goals with inspirational design features that allow Dropbox to fl ex, meld, and shape interior spaces as they expand to nearly 4,200 team members over the next several years, continuously re-imagining how they do business and how they support a productive, healthy workstyle.Awards* FAB Interior Design Award, Large Offi ce - IIDA Northland* Honor Award, Work - Large - IIDA Northern California Chapter
Macalester College - Janet Wallace Fine Arts CenterBeginning with an arts master plan in 2005, HGA collaborated with Macalester College to transform their campus arts precinct with a multi-phased approach starting with the music and visual arts buildings and concluding with the theatre building. The planning emphasized the evaluation and analysis of existing structures and leveraging existing assets to maximize value. Phase III addresses the needs of the Theatre and Dance De-partments and builds upon the work of phases I and II through the development of a custom metal façade that alludes to the movement and theatricality of theatrical per-formance.Award* Merit Award (Architecture Category) - USITT (Association for Performing Arts & Entertainment Professionals)** Awards won in previous years not included
St. Paul Academy & Summit School - Hugh Schilling Math & Science CenterThe new Hugh K. Schilling Math and Science Center—a state-of-the-art science, math, computer science and engineering facility—will comprise 36,000 SF of classroom, lab-oratory and collaborative space dedicated to the future of STEM learning. Designed to support SPA’s Harkness-based pedagogy, the Schilling Center is organized around suites of formal and informal learning spaces and two design labs. The Hugh K. Schilling Math and Science Center is the fi rst and signature piece of a comprehensive, multi-year inte-rior renovation that re-envisions SPA’s entire Upper School, including classrooms, study spaces, library, digital humanities lab, faculty offi ces and student commons.Award* Award of Merit - IES Illumination Awards
Tri-Faith - Countryside Community ChurchHGA led a robust community engagement process that built consensus and enthusi-asm for the Countryside Community Church—part of the Tri-Faith Initiative that unites a church, synagogue and mosque. The congregation of Countryside Community Church envisioned an intimate, welcoming worship environment with an emphasis on multiple forms of musical expression and spoken word. The Client wanted the experience to ap-peal to the senses and feel connected to the natural features of the larger site. Lighting design is an integral part of architectural expression and this project is an example of value added by HGA’s lighting consulting work. Walker Art Center - Vineland Entrance PavilionThe new 5,000-square-foot, mostly glass pavilion is designed to be a social space. There is a café that faces the Sculpture Garden and a wall for large-scale mural projects fea-turing iconic rotating artwork. There are skylights that pierce the ceiling, and a bronze facade with the word Walker cut out of it. The design adds windows in areas of the cine-ma lobby that were blocked by the outside steps. The entry will be a more dynamic and fl exible entrance, becoming a visitor welcome and orientation space to serve the Walk-er’s cinema audiences and also a space to welcome school and tour groups.Award* AIA Architecture Award - AIA** Awards won in previous years not included
City of MN/Duluth Energy Systems - Steam to HW ConversionDuluth Energy Systems is a city-owned steam plant providing heating service to over 160 buildings in downtown Duluth and the Canal Park area. Three years ago, Ever-Green Energy and the City of Duluth began transforming a major portion of the energy system, replacing 16 blocks of aged steam pipe with new hot water infrastructure to improve effi ciency, water conservation, and performance. Carris Health - Redwood Falls Replacement HospitalTo make this project viable, the local community-owned hospital entered into a new partnership with an established rural healthcare provider, and their vision is to reinvent rural healthcare in Minnesota to ensure access and support thriving communities. We led community engagement sessions that both informed all aspects of design and the reimagination of their brand. By guiding the client through the selection of the site and innovative healthcare space planning with experiential design and interior materiality, we provided a holistic approach that laid the foundation for a successful project.Award* FAB Interior Design Award, Healthcare - IIDA Northland
CenterPoint Energy - Downtown Minneapolis Offi ce RenovationCenterPoint Energy retained HGA to design a new regional headquarters offi ce in th heart of downtown Minneapolis. This project transitioned the utility company from leas-ing space in a large class A tower to being the owner and primary tenant of a former department store. It consolidates executives, regulatory, marketing, fi nance, support functions, a call center, and training staff in one location.Award* Adaptive Re-Use Award - International Facility Manager Association (IFMA)
City of Manitowish Waters - Fire StationThe Manitowish Waters Fire Company is one of the last Fire Companies left in the state of Wisconsin. This new fi re station replaces the Town’s obsolete and outdated facility. The exterior of the building is clad in custom precast panels that create random vertical shadows reminiscent of the shade and silhouettes found in a Northwoods forest - jux-taposed by a striking acid green, steel canopy. A fi re engine, ATV’s, boats and ambu-lance are housed in the buildings four drivethrough apparatus bays. The 10,300 square foot station also includes offi ces, a training area, kitchen, fi tness center, bathrooms, and showers.Award*Excellence in Design for Economy and Change - AIA MN Honor Award
Confi dential Client-Corporate HeadquartersLocated within the downtown central business district, the new corporate center for a Fortune 500 fi nancial services organization refl ects the company’s commitment to not only Minneapolis, but also a strengthened connection between the Minneapolis down-town core and the growing Elliot Park and East Town neighborhoods. The building an-chors the vision for a proposed full block redevelopment that also includes a pocket park, two levels of below grade parking and a shared center court drive.Award* Top Projects of 2020 - Finance and Commerce
GSA - Arthur J. Altmeyer ModernizationLocated on the Social Security Administration Woodlawn Campus, the Arthur J. Altmeyer building serves as the primary offi ces for Senior Social Security Administration person-nel. The building was originally constructed in 1959 and includes 10 occupied stories with mechanical systems for much of the campus housed in the basement and a two-story penthouse on the roof. The team of HGA and Snow Kreilich Architects collaborated for this complex overhaul currently in construction. The design includes removal of the build-ing’s exterior cladding, interior fi nishes and systems.Award* 1st Place Commercial Existing- ASHRAE Technology Awards
GSA - Derby Line VT Land Port of EntryLocated in the Village of Derby Line, Vermont, The Derby Line I-91 LPOE replaces an un-dersized and outdated port with an up-to-date and expanded facility. The building’s design is inspired by Vermont’s natural resources--stone and wood--and vernacular ar-chitecture, and informed by CBP operations, and GSA Design Excellence standards. It represents an integrated design approach that addresses operational concerns, sus-tainability requirements and architectural aspirations. The building’s “gateway” massing simultaneously addresses directed viewsheds and clear circulation fl ow for security pur-poses as well as the building’s rural Vermont context and its identity as a United States Land Port of Entry. TractorWorks-Management Offi ceIn this unique opportunity to renovate, we looked at the building’s natural resources as our inspiration; timber and stone columns, brick walls, wood fl oors and ceilings. The beauty of these elements were restored and refi nished. In addition, new features were added including a new roof deck off the seventh fl oor, and renovated skyway entry fi n-ishes. HGA was later asked to design a new management offi ce and conference suite for the building. Drawing upon similar concepts of warehouse-style materials, complement-ed with modern technology and branding, this new project strengthens the building’s image and provides state-of-the-art amenities to attract and maintain tenants, includ-ing a fi tness center, work lounges, and wellness rooms.Award* Midwest Regional TOBY Award, Historical Category - Building Owners and Managers Association
Samuel Oschin Cancer Center at Cedars SinaiThe relocated and remodeled Samuel Oschin Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai added 45,000-square-feet with 41 exam rooms and 53 infusion bays in two infusion areas—for short and long-term care—in a healing-focused atmosphere that harnesses natural light and emphasizes patient comfort while promoting effi ciency through a neighborhood concept. By reinforcing connection and familiarity with patients, care team, and the healthcare environment, the project creates communities of care that reduce stress and reduce treatment durations and travel distances for improved effi ciency. The new elevat-ed location provides new teaming spaces, access to nature and natural light to support collaboration and well-being.Award* Award of Merit - IES Illumination Award
Express Bike ShopOver its 25-year operation, the Express Bike Shop in St. Paul, which is part of Keystone Community Services, has refurbished and resold over 35,000 bicycles and employed 400 low-income teens to apprentice for 200 hours each. HGA’s primary mission was to elevate the design of the existing site and store to both give it more visibility in the community and provide a better working experience for employees and apprentices. HGA aimed to create a better shopping experience, in order to attract more customers to increase sales and fund the apprentice program. Our approach was to simplify and create a co-hesive space with a strong identity, clarifi ed palette, and bold graphics. Award* Social Impact Award - IIDA
