CYNTHIA DOLOUGHTY President of Union League Boys & Girls Clubs BoardFor more than 100 years, Union League Boys & Girls Clubs has been unwavering in our commitment to serving the needs of Chicago’s youth. At the program level, Union League Boys & Girls Clubs is led by talented, dedicated, and compassionate youth development professionals who engage with youth ages six to 18 in Chicago’s West and South Side communities. Currently, we help to meet the after-school and summer development needs for more than 15,000 youth facing barriers to succeed in school and life. 2021 was a great year of growth in Union League Boys & Girls Clubs history. In response to not only the pandemic but also the increased need for positive youth development in Chicago’s West and South Sides, we opened seven new school-based sites (with three on the horizonfor 2022)! By offering a safe place to spend time after school, as well as providing structured and guided program time complemented with experiential learning opportunities, Union League Boys & Girls Clubs is actively enabling youth to grow into their full potential! I send a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who keep our community wonderful, united, and resilient. We know that each chapter in our history will have its own obstacles, but together, we can overcome them for our youth. FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES2

2021 was a pivotal year in our organization’s history. At the start of 2021, we hosted onsite, virtual learning support with computers, internet, and meals for our youth who attend Chicago Public Schools. Over the summer, we kept kids engaged by offering a robust day camp, with members enjoying frequent trips to our Summer Camp in Salem, Wisconsin. In the fall of 2021, as schools reopened, we played an integral role in guiding our kids back into their physical classrooms. Union League Boys & Girls Clubs (ULBGC) also expanded its services with the award of the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. The grant, approximately $1.4 million per year for the next five years, allowed us to open seven new sites throughout Chicago, in Archer Heights, Bridgeport, Back of the Yards, Humboldt Park, and Little Village. The grant award gives ULBGC the opportunity to fulfill our mission to an even greater extent throughout our community, serving over 770 more youth per year and creating 40 new jobs in the communities in which our Clubs are located. In 2022 we will expand to three additional sites!None of this would be possible without your generosity. Our Clubs make a difference in the lives of our members and communities. With your support, you empower us to continue to have the type of impact that makes us one of the strongest Boys & Girls Clubs in the country. Together, we ensure our Club doors remain open and expand our outreach to serve more of Chicago’s youth.MARY ANN MAHON HUELS President & CEOFROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO3

3:30 PM Kids arrive at the Clubs. Snack time! In 2021, ULBGC served more than 300,000 healthy meals and snacks to 15,093 youth, thanks to a critical partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.4:00 PM Power Hour. Academic Success is a critical component of our well-rounded programming at ULBGC. Power Hour, made possible in part by Ross Dress for Less, ensures each member spends a portion of their day completing homework, and we provide trained and passionate tutors and staff to assist with our members’ homework. In 2021, thanks to Comcast NBCUniversal, we were able to distribute more than 50 laptops to our members to help them complete their homework! A DAY IN THE LIFEOF OUR 15,000 YOUTH6

6:30–8:30 PMDeparture. Parents can pick up their kids knowing they were safe at the Club and have completed their homework with mentors. In fact, 89% of our members reported feeling safer at the Club compared to hanging out somewhere else! Many of our teen members rely on public transportation to get to school, the Club, or home for the day. We provide them with CTA passes free of cost to ensure there is no barrier to participating in enrichment programs at ULBGC. At ULBGC, our members can take part in a wide variety of programs that meet their academic, leadership, and health and wellness needs. Here is a glimpse at some of the programs our kids participate in on their way to building great futures.KIDS SMARTS“Kids Smarts is for members to learn about emotional safety and strangers. It focuses on good strangers vs. bad strangers in the community and understanding the dierence.”— Kailey L., age 8“IT entrepreneurship is a program where kids get to take apart laptops, desktops, and phones and put them all back together. I think it’s a great program, specifically for the workforce-development aspect of the program.” IT ENTREPRENEURSHIP— Af N., age 17“Sometimes people say “don’t judge a book by its cover,” so that means don’t judge anybody before you learn their story and when they tell you their story, don’t make fun of them because you don’t know what they went through.”BE A STAR— Jakearra M., age 97

The scholarship program was established to assist Club members who need us most in their pursuit of higher education and in making their dreams become a reality. As Union League Boys & Girls Clubs continue to serve more high-school members, we are seeing a larger number of members applying for scholarships. The need for more scholarships is greater than ever and will continue to grow as we add more high school sites. In 2021 we raised $210,600 for 57 members and alumni, which will be distributed in the 2022–2023 school year. Afif has been attending Club One for seven life-changing years and is a senior at Thomas Kelly College Prep. He has participated in a variety of Club programs, including Building Bridges Through Basketball, Speech club, Passport to Manhood, SeaPerch, and worked his way up to President of Torch Club. Afif has done it all in and out of the Club. As a Club member, he participated in a 2-week Navy SEAL youth development camp in Virginia, made numerous trips to Summer Camp in Wisconsin, and was part of a feature in an Under Armour advertisement video. While participating in Club programs, Afif found his passions of technology and basketball. He is also currently a STEM activity specialist at Club One. Anastasia Hernandez is our 2021 Staff Inspirational Hero. As Club One Director, Anastasia is doing whatever it takes to ensure youth in Pilsen have access to critical services and resources throughout the COVID-19 pandemic! As soon as schools closed in 2020-2021, Anastasia and her team kicked it into gear, providing nearly 100,000 grab and go meals for youth and their families in the Pilsen neighborhood. Anastasia led with hope and persistence as Club One opened their doors as a satellite location for Chicago Public Schools, serving as an e-learning site for youth whose parents were essential workers. From mentorship sessions to little acts of service, Anastasia has created a supportive and loving environment for youth, families, and staff during one of the most challenging periods of time for our community. Thank you, Anastasia.LEADERS IN THE MAKING GALAThe 44th Annual Gala was the most successful fundraising event ever, bringing in over a half a million dollars. The paddle raise brought in over $300k with the assistance of Club members and staff telling their stories as well as a matching gift. A big thank you to Garrett Popcorn Shops and Ghirardelli Chocolate for donating popcorn and chocolate to incorporate into our guest favors. We also introduced for the 2nd time our annual staff inspirational hero and honored Anastasia Hernandez, highlighted here. Due to Covid-19, we were unable to provide our typical summer camp experience; however, we were still able to be, as our shirts said, “Six feet apart, together at Camp.” Vans of members came with their Club Staff on field trips to Camp. We opened the low ropes course, the waterfront, and no one left Camp without getting s’mores first. Our members were still able to experience nature, get out of the city, and enjoy the quiet of Camp with a variety of arts & crafts activities, sports, and more.We celebrated breaking ground where the old office was so that we could meet the 21st century needs for campers with a new health center. Being able to design this building from the ground up also means that we can use Camp all year round! As always, Camp is a place for youth to challenge themselves, become more independent, and have a safe space to play and be kids.Affordable Camp fees are made possible by donors like you. Contact Kimberly Coady Hawkins at ka.chawkins@ulbgc.org or (312) 583-9924 to help send a Club kid to Camp.2021 WAS ALL ABOUT PROBLEM SOLVING AT CAMP.14
