2 The Country Day SchoolNEARLY TWO YEARS into COVID, we never would have guessed that our lives would still not have returned to what we previously deemed as “normal.” And that we would be providing closure to the 2020-2021 academic year with fi ve in-person outdoor mini-graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021, rather than one, so that each homeroom could remain as a cohort joined only by parents, then livestreaming the six hour production for all other family members. The mental health and wellbeing of our students has remained more critical than ever during this time. The sudden and unexpected isolation students experienced during the spring term of 2020 while in remote learning returned once again after a successful fi rst term in-person last fall, and we fi nished 2020-2021 evenly split between in-person and remote learning thanks to further provincial lockdowns. The extraordinary efforts of our CDS administrators, faculty and staff, never faltered in their effort to deliver an education with balance throughout year two of this pandemic. And our parents have proved to be the unsung heroes who supported their students throughout this diffi cult time. The understanding and ongoing patience you have demonstrated continues to be an enduring example of the love and dedication that we all share for your children and our students. As for our students, they have continued to amaze us through their level of vigilance and resilience shown toward this unfathomable disruption to their secondary school journey. Yet, I cannot help but think that somehow this experience is helping to shape and prepare them for future setbacks like never before. While a year later than we had hoped, we fi nally broke ground on the Building Magic campaign in June 2021, with the objective to rejuvenate our original school buildings to the benefi t of our youngest students. The goal is to fi nish this project in time for our 50th anniversary celebrations launching in September 2022 and running through June 2023.Message from the Chair of the Board Navigating Our Way Through Year Two of the PandemicThroughout all of this, CDS continues to be fortunate to have a talented and dedicated group of volunteer directors willing to lend their time and fi nancial support to help our visionary projects become reality for our students. These volunteers once again worked overtime this past year, and for that, I am immensely grateful. I would like to thank our departing Board members, Glenn Henderson and Melanie Ward, for their years of service. We also welcomed our new Board member, Jamie Wakeam, on May 4, 2021.Ongoing investments such as this continue to build on education with balance and truly fulfi ll the four pillars of our Strategic Plan. The pillars were put forth to ensure that in good and bad times we are equipped to deal with whatever is brought forward. I am pleased to report that our fi nancial stability, risk management, and governance also remain strong. On behalf of my fellow Board members, I want to once again acknowledge all who helped make this past year run so smoothly, which really is our entire community. And thank you to our Head of School, John Liggett, and his staff for their ongoing dedication in supporting, knowing and inspiring our students. Karen Adams Alumni Parent ’18 & ’20 Chair, Board of Directors“… our parents have proved to be the unsung heroes who supported their students throughout this diffi cult time.”

4 The Country Day SchoolTHE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL has always felt like a safe and welcoming place. Building Magic, our most recent fundraising campaign to help rejuvenate our Junior School, is a perfect example of our efforts to keep it so. Despite the challenges of three school years of COVID, this campaign has almost reached its $7 million goal. This refl ects the remarkable sense of community we have all worked so hard to fashion, with the Junior School renewal positioned as the ultimate nod to the important role community has played in our evolution. The project is centred around that portion of the school where it all began. After renting since opening in 1972, CDS acquired the two-room public school and the 1883 Eversley Schoolhouse at Auction in 1978. The Building Magic construction phase will see almost the entire original Junior School undergo signifi cant renovation, add eight classrooms and create a large new Entrance Hall that will see the Eversley Schoolhouse showcased fully inside the building!Construction was understandably delayed by a year as the fi rst round of COVID hit our economy. And while we broke ground in the summer of 2021, subsequent rounds of COVID have wreaked havoc in the construction industry through both supply shortages and cost escalations. Thus, keeping the project on time and on budget has remained diffi cult and time-consuming.Message from the Head of School Building Magic Breaks Ground and Raises the Roof on the Junior School“Despite the challenges of three school years of COVID, this campaign has almost reached its $7 million goal. This refl ects the remarkable sense of community we have all worked so hard to fashion, with the Junior School renewal positioned as the ultimate nod to the important role community has played in our evolution.”In the early winter months of 2022, we will see the steel structure start to rise and our crews will do their best to ready the building for the 2022/23 academic year. Regardless of the timing, the Junior School will continue to operate seamlessly in parallel with the construction. Upon completion, it will certainly be an honour to witness the Junior School Magic fi nd a new home in our rejuvenated building in the coming year!John LiggettHead of School
2021 Annual Report 5One of the many capital improvements that took place over the summer and fall was the newly installed rubber surface of our running track. We cannot wait to welcome parents, alumni and friends back to Hawksworth Field to cheer on our student-athletes sometime in the future!

Those who drive by cannot help but witness the progress that has taken place since. Amazingly, the Junior School continues to operate in parallel with the ongoing construction with minimal disturbances.Among other things, the construction team has been busy prepping our 1883 Eversley Schoolhouse for its eventual enclosure inside a spectacular new entrance hall and building and resurfac-ing a temporary new playground for our youngest learners.Stay tuned for our campaign video update later this spring celebrating the virtual Groundbreaking last fall!On these pages are featured some of our major donors to the Building Magic campaign.Campaign for the Junior School BuildingMagicCampaignBreaks Ground!

16 The Country Day SchoolAll three of Kerstin and Mark Wyndham-West’s kids are Lifers – James ’16, Alex ’17 and Amy ’19 – which means they all spent 14 years as students at The Country Day School. Kerstin taught at CDS for 23 years before “retiring” from teaching English and Drama in 2019, but is still on campus nearly every day as a Debate Coach, so it doesn’t really feel like she’s left (which for CDS is a good thing!). Among other things, she has a 14-year streak of helping to qualify at least one CDS student, and sometimes two or even three, for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, which CDS is hosting this April.Giving Back Was a Family Affair
2021 Annual Report 17at the fi nished Wyndham-West Field (formerly Centre Field) beside the Cyclone Dome. “It was a nostalgic moment for all of us, particularly our kids who remembered the fun of participating in sporting and Student Council events like Terry Fox Day, shared with their friends, past teachers and coaches, including those who have retired in recent years.”When it came to supporting the school where their children spent so many years learning and thriving, and Kerstin so many years doing what she loves – teaching and coaching – Kerstin says, “It was really a no brainer. We wanted to give back to the community that made our children’s experience so positive. It was a family affair. We were all in agreement.”All three Wyndham-West children headed east to attend Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. James studied Arts with a major in History and is now working in the fam-ily business in Ontario, and Alex studied Business Studies and is pursuing a music career. Meanwhile, Amy is cur-rently in her third year at Dalhousie studying Kinesiology. As residents of King Township and residing fi ve minutes from campus, the Wyndham-Wests look forward to returning to watch the fi rst game played on the fi nished Wyndham-West Field, likely a rugby match this spring. That will be a proud moment for all of them and an exciting time for CDS athletics as well!“Our children really enjoyed their time at CDS, including all of the opportunities in drama, music and sports, and the balance it afforded them,” says Kerstin. “Although they all played rep soccer, they specifi cally enjoyed playing sports with their school friends and being coached by their teachers. We all have very fond memories of some wonder-ful matches played on the campus over the years.”James and Alex recently accompanied their parents for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Building Magic campaign to rejuvenate the Junior School. Amy was able to join the others during her Reading Week to have a look The Wyndham-West family gathered on the renamed Centre Field last November when Amy was home for Reading Week.

2021 Annual Report 23Our two new Outdoor Education classrooms continue to be in high demand during year two of the pandemic. From French and drama classes to history and health, the ability to instruct in the fresh air without masks is appreciated by all students and faculty.
24 The Country Day SchoolI AM PLEASED to report that despite signifi cant COVID-related challenges, The Country Day School remains in a stable fi nancial position. The school continues to navigate the operational challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic well (e.g. balancing a hybrid education model of remote and in-person learning) and maintains clear and open lines of communication with the community. In December 2020, the Board of Directors unanimously approved going forward with the Junior School building project after extensive analysis, stress testing of assumptions and careful review of the school’s established fi nancial stability markers. The new Junior School wing will be 18,000 square feet and has a construction budget of just over $13 million. This project is not possible without the leadership and generosity of our major donors and the support of our entire community through annual Capital Fund donations.Risk management continues to be the focus of the Finance & Risk Committee. A signifi cant amount of time has been spent addressing the risks related to the pandemic. CDS also engaged an external fi rm to perform a security assessment audit of the school’s cyber security practices. The assessment indicated “a stable and consistent implementation of IT security practices.” The School will work on implementing the audit recommendations in the coming fi scal year to refi ne and improve its security position. For the past two school years, every effort has been made to credit parents for the cost savings related to the mandated pivots to remote learning. The remote learning rebate was calculated from cost savings in 2021 from the lunch program, education program, premises and administrative expenses. In 2020-2021 the school incurred signifi cant COVID-related expenses but did not offset these expenses against the amount of the rebate. As a not-for-profi t corporation, the school sets a break-even operating budget and this year, the net from school operations after the remote learning rebates was $54,000. This represents 0.2% of tuition revenue. Overall fund balances are at $49.3 million, consisting of $32.9 million in the Capital Fund ($28.8 million invested in capital assets and $4.1 million in externally restricted fund balances for the building project), $8.8 million in the Endowment Fund, and $7.5 million in the Operating Fund. The total excess of revenue over expenses, including fundraising and investment income, was $4,418,000 for the year ended June 30, 2021, which is driven by: the Building Magic campaign gains and donations of $2,423,000, the Endowment Fund gains and donations of $1,535,000 and new student enrolment fees and other net revenue of $460,000. I would like to thank the members of the Finance & Risk Committee for their dedication and expertise: Karen Adams, Luis Chacin, Nadia Chychrun, Glenn Henderson, Basheer Khan, Tina Mithra, Jamie Wakeam and Melanie Ward. I would like to extend a special thank you to Melanie Ward who has chaired the Investment Committee since 2017. 26 The Country Day SchoolEndowment ReportAn endowment is a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff.Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the School and its community by diversifying the student population; adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience; and helping to fund programs such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, staff development and training, and beautifi cation and green initiatives. The Country Day School also has a number of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the School’s areas of high-est priority and the Scholarship/Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specifi c area of support and directed to the School’s Endowment are added to an existing fund that sup-ports the same area. New named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years. To learn more, please contact Brent Johnston, the Executive Director of Advancement, at 905.833.1220 x269.Name Area of Support 2020 2021Alumni Legacy Fund Scholarship / Bursary $ 77,366 $ 90,343Association Bursary Endowment Fund Scholarship / Bursary $ 121,388 $ 128,976Hawksworth Endowment Fund (Association) Athletics $ 74,043 $ 78,736The Wilma West Endowment Fund (Association) Environment / Grounds $ 49,723 $ 52,831The Jim Bayler Endowment Fund Scholarship / Bursary $ 36,739 $ 39,035The Courtney T.
