Our Pastoral Care Our inclusive ethos is based on high aspirations support and respect for all Pastoral Care In St Pius X College we pride ourselves on the quality of our care for all pupils We believe that a caring and happy environment is essential for pupils to succeed We therefore place great emphasis on our pastoral care provision in order to foster positive relationships and community spirit We promote healthy lifestyles emotional well being and positive attitudes in all our pupils as well as fostering an environment where diversity is valued Our aim is to ensure that the college supports and equips all pupils with the life skills they need to make responsible choices and achieve their full potential We have a specific pastoral care structure which provides guidance and support to all pupils Each member of the team has an important role in supporting pupils and meeting with parents In addition a number of external agencies help to provide counselling services The pastoral care of pupils is s upported by a well planned pastoral programme which examines physical spiritual health and emotional needs and issues of concerns deemed relevant to our pupils lives Rewarding and recognising achievements are also very important and carry considerable weight in St Pius X College as they raise pupil self esteem and promote selfconfidence I was scared and anxious at the start but I settled very quickly with the help of my form teacher Mrs McCormack Rosie Ballylifford PS 4 St Pius X College Magherafelt Code of Conduct Effective teaching and learning can only take place when attitudes and behaviours are positive In St Pius X College we strive to establish a positive ethos where all pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility Our Code of Conduct is based on the simple requirements of courtesy and mutual respect both on and off the school grounds The college is committed to creating an environment which is orderly respectful and conducive to teaching and learning Our Code of Conduct clearly sets out our expectations and has a structured system of rewards and sanctions which promotes high standards of work and behaviour We therefore seek the support of all pupils and parents guardians for the implementation of the Code of Conduct by asking them to sign a positive behaviour contract which can be found in every Pupil Homework Diary Anti bullying Our college ethos is that bullying is completely unacceptable The use of group work peer support schemes selfdiscipline and praise are used to support our anti bullying culture The following policies and structures are available on our college website and are designed to minimise risks Safeguarding Child Protection Anti Bullying E Safety Pastoral Care Positive Behaviour Management and the college Code of Conduct

Our Pupil Participation We believe that pupils flourish when they are given the opportunity to lead and to mentor Student Council Pupils take an active part in decision making in the college through the elected Student Council Their opinions are frequently sought across a range of areas including teaching and learning extra curricular activities and pupil welfare The Council gives a voice to the pupil population and an opportunity for the pupils to discuss pertinent issues with staff and to influence policy The Council then forwards proposals to the Senior Leadership Team The aims of the School Council are to improve communication between pupils and staff to ensure St Pius X College promotes a healthy environment in which we learn in partnership to ensure that pupils views are acknowledged and where appropriate acted upon to provide pupils with the framework for engaging in active citizenship to make the school a more harmonious place to learn Senior Mentors In St Pius X College two senior mentors have been assigned to Year 8 classes to help them with the transition from primary to secondary school The mentor is a senior school pupil who has expressed an interest in helping the younger pupils They help to make pupils feel welcome and at ease The mentors help out in form class and encourage the pupils to join extra curricular activities at break and lunch time They answer questions the pupils might have about any aspect of school life Individual pupil mentors are employed where appropriate The pupils respond well to having mentors and relationships between pupils and mentors are positive Issues addressed can range from managing school work to how to make new friends Investors in Pupils Raising standards through pupil voice and pupil participation in school St Pius X College has been successfully awarded the Investors in Pupils charter mark The Investors in Pupils award provides a quality framework within which schools and educational settings develop embed and enhance pupil voice and participation strategies 8 St Pius X College Magherafelt St Pius X College has always ensured that our children and young people are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own education and behaviour and it was gratifying to have this validated through receipt of the Investors in Pupil s award which has recognised us as A really outstanding learning community in action

Our School Production My Fair Lady My Fair Lady In November 2019 the corridors of St Pius X College were filled with the harmonies and melodies of My Fair Lady We staged seven performances with sell out shows My Fair Lady by Lerner and Loewe is set in the early 1900s the show is a classic of musical theatre Demanding both musically and dramatically our students met and exceeded this as evidenced by reviewers magnificent a triumph and outstanding Over one hundred pupils were involved in the production in all aspects including acting singing front of house backstage marketing and advertising to name but a few It was an enriching experience for our pupils to work with professionals from the performing arts industry which made this a unique learning event More importantly the pupils made new friendships grew in confidence and made forever memories Our school musicals allow the college to come together as a family Staff giving so freely of their expertise and time our pupils participating and parents supporting It also connects us to the business community which gave so generously in sponsorship The phenomenal success of My Fair Lady is testament to the wonderful collaborative relationships nurtured by the college We can t wait until the next one 10 St Pius X College Magherafelt

Our Year 8 Pupils We recognise that transition plays a key part in the future happiness and success of our pupils In St Pius X College we aim to ensure that each new Year 8 pupil experiences a smooth transition from primary school We are totally committed to supporting pupils throughout this process Some of the key steps in our transition programme are outlined below In June prior to arrival in St Pius X College Mrs Moore Head of Year 8 and Mrs Corr SENCO visit our feeder primary schools to meet with the transferring pupils and their teachers They are provided with comprehensive information on each pupil s academic progress and any relevant pastoral issues An Induction Day is held at the beginning of June for all parents guardians and transferring pupils where they will receive important information and be introduced to the Year 8 Pastoral Team Pupils participate in a range of practical activities to help them get to know other transferring pupils In July Primary 6 and 7 pupils are invited to attend our Summer Scheme with current Year 8 pupils to help get to know one another meet some members of staff and familiarise themselves with the school At the end of August the year 8 pupils start school one day before other Year groups return In September we have a range of induction activities planned to help pupils settle in such as Young Enterprise Your School Your Business Our Year 13 mentors assigned to the Year 8 classes have a significant role to play in these events These senior pupils also meet the Year 8 pupils at break time lunch time and during PSHE class In October of Year 8 parents guardians are invited to attend our Year 8 Mass and meet the form teachers In Term 1 we have a trip for Year 8 pupils to promote friendship building 12 St Pius X College Magherafelt

Our Focus on Individual Needs We provide guidance and support to pupils in order to overcome the barriers to learning We liaise closely with parents staff from the pupil s previous school and outside professional agencies in order to enable us to acquire the relevant information This helps build an accurate picture of our pupils and enables us to support pupils in the most appropriate way All our incoming Year 8 pupils sit CAT4 GL Assessment Tests which enables us to identify the pupil s strengths and difficulties Pupils who are recognised as having literacy or numeracy difficulties are not set apart from the mainstream of everyday college life but begin work within the level suited to their ability follow the curriculum at a level differentiated to ensure their learning are offered extra in class support through a team of Learning Support Assistants where appropriate pupils are set individual targets through our individual learning or behavioural plans This is monitored and reviewed in partnership with parents staff and the pupils work in a happy nurturing and secure environment which promotes effective learning talents and achievements of pupils are identified and recognised All pupils identified as having academic physical and emotional needs receive support from relevant external agencies A close liaison is maintained between parents staff and external agencies The SENCO in communication with the Head of Year 8 Key Stage 3 Co ordinator and Pastoral Vice Principal oversees and monitors such pupils We also ensure that all staff are provided with continued professional development to ensure that the needs of all pupils are best met St Pius X College Magherafelt 17

Our Catholic Ethos As a Catholic school we promote values of excellence and respect at all times Religious Education Religious Education is given priority in the curriculum One of our aims is to give pupils the experience of a Catholic education As a consequence at the beginning of each college year a Mass is celebrated for incoming Year 8 pupils and their parents and for the whole college community The Religious Education Programme meets with the approval of the Armagh Diocesan Adviser and satisfies all the requirements laid down in the NI Core RE Syllabus The programme is about faith building and gives opportunities for pupils to develop their relationship with God and with each other through the use of scripture doctrine prayer and reflection on their own experiences We are fortunate to have a college oratory which facilitates regular class Mass private and community prayer confessions and meditation and worship The religious programme is further enhanced by daily assemblies class liturgies and regular visits from members of Religious Orders There are so many opportunities in this school On Mondays and Tuesdays we can go to the Oratory for the Novena at lunch time Caitlin Derrychrin PS 18 St Pius X College Magherafelt

Our Careers Guidance We empower pupils to make effective decisions about their future Careers Education The aim of Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance CEIAG in the college is to help pupils develop their knowledge understanding skills and experience of opportunities to manage their career development and make relevant informed choices to ensure successful transition into education training or employment and to become lifelong learners The overall objective of effective CEIAG provision within the college is to enable pupils to become effective career decision makers empowered to manage their own career development successfully and with due respect and care for their own needs those of others and of their wider communities There are 3 main aims needed to realise this objective Aim 1 Self Awareness and Development Aim 2 Career Exploration Aim 3 Career Management Formal careers guidance begins in Y ear 10 when pupils select their subjects for GCSE In Year 11 all pupils undergo preparation for work experience In Year 12 all pupils complete work experience and mock interviews in order to improve interview skills and enhance career prospects In Years 13 and 14 pupils undertake a programme which focuses on selfdevelopment career exploration career management and the online UCAS Apply System Throughout the programme pupils are involved in careers guidance interviews more focused work placements mock interviews university visits and talks from visiting speakers Careers advisers from the Careers Service for Northern Ireland come to the college on a regular basis and participate in the delivery of the programme throughout all Key Stages 26 St Pius X College Magherafelt

Our Sporting Experiences We promote sporting and physical activity opportunities for our pupils Sporting Aims The overall goal of physical education and sport is to promote the physical health and social and psychological development of all pupils The PE curriculum and programmes for sport games and competitions aim to make pupils aware of the benefits in terms of healthy life styles and physical well being develop sports skills develop an awareness of team work develop self discipline We have excellent sporting facilities including Sports Hall Fitness Suite Gymnasium There are so many opportunities and clubs for us to get involved in and to enjoy such as camogie and football Anna New Row PS Outside playing facilities include Full Size Gaelic Pitch All Weather Playing Surface Practice Pitch Table Tennis Tables Football Pitch Basketball Courts 32 St Pius X College Magherafelt There are also two tennis courts and hard court play areas around the college These are supplemented by the use of the local swimming pool leisure centre and sports arena Sporting activities are provided through the PE programme and after college activities Formal PE classes are provided for each teaching group For those pupils who wish to participate in further sporting activities time is allocated after school to coach sport and prepare teams We promote physical activities throughout the school day Pupils have ample opportunities to participate in games before class and during break and lunchtime

Our College Information Classification St Pius X College Magherafelt is a co educational 11 18 Catholic Maintained College Education Authority EA The college is situated in the EA North Eastern Region but pupils from the Southern Region are also enrolled Information for parents published by the Education Authority is available from County Hall Ballymena Admissions Criteria The EA North Eastern Region supplies a copy of its booklet Transfer Information and Admission Criteria for Post Primary Schools A Guide for Parents on their website Details of the college s Admissions Policy are contained in this publication and on our college website College Closings The college operates statutory closings as set out by DENI Details of all closings are published through college documentation and in the Pupil Homework Diary Parents guardians are asked to support us in observing these arrangements Class Organisation In Key Stage 3 pupils are organised into bands according to their attainment in standardised English and Mathematics tests Pupils with specific educational needs are placed in smaller classes where additional support for their learning is provided In Years 11 to 14 pupils are organised into classes according to subject choices 36 St Pius X College Magherafelt The College Day The college operates a ten day timetable The day begins at 8 55 am and ends at 3 30 pm Details of the structure are in the Pupil Homework Diary Parent Teacher Meetings The college provides an opportunity for parents guardians of all year groups to meet with subject form teacher to discuss progress If parents guardians wish to contact teachers at other times they are welcome to do so and should request an appointment College Fund The vast majority of parents have been very generous with voluntary subscriptions to the College Fund which covers ongoing miscellaneous expenses For the academic year 2021 2022 a contribution of 50 for the first child 30 for the second child and 20 for the third child is requested There is a maximum of 100 per family Inspection Obtainment of Documents A parent guardian may obtain a copy of a relevant document on written request giving one week s notice
